EXPLORE SAFELY I don’t know about you, but I’m exhausted from nearly six months of staying home.

I am so ready to explore - safely and with my immediate family only. I vow to wear my face mask, use hand sanitizer, and maintain respectful and appropriate social distance.

After editing the August issue, I absolutely must get out and do some of the wonderful activities mentioned. I can’t wait to go to a drive-in movie again. The last time I was, I saw Jaws—when it was first released! Also high on my list is to sit outdoors on a River Walk patio while sipping a margarita and listening to Mariachi music. I regularly walk the Museum Reach section of the River Walk, but now I want to rent a bike and ride the Mission Reach. An afternoon art gallery jaunt followed by a visit to a wine bar sounds heavenly too.

When it comes to the topic of wine, opinions run the gamut, but Ernest Hemmingway said it best while, no doubt, mulling over a bottle.

“Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.”

HIGH STREET WINE CO. If you’re looking for an establishment where you, too, can wax poetically on the finer points of wine or are just embarking on a journey to discover the charms imbued in fermented grapes, here are a few bars and restaurants ripe for your patronage.

However, if you find yourself a bit peckish, they also serve an assortment of cheese boards, charcuterie, and conservas. Unlike a restaurant where the wine is an accompaniment to food, at High Street, the food offerings compliment the wine. Sound like your kind of heaven?

BOILER HOUSE TEXAS GRILL & WINE GARDEN Also located at the Pearl, steps away from the River Walk, is the tried-and-true Boiler House Texas Grill & Wine Garden. Known largely for their chef-driven menu and impressive wine walls, Boiler House is a wonderful choice for a special celebration, be it a first date, birthday dinner, or a night without the kids.

There are few more impressive cuts of meat than their 32-ounce Tomahawk bone-in ribeye slathered in herbed butter, best eaten with a big bold red, such as the Inglenook Cabernet.

With a sultry ambiance, it’s a good place to settle in for a hearty meal and several glasses of wine. For a more casual outing, you 14 RIO Magazine

can dine outside on their picnic tables with housemade hummus and shrimp skewers, which they recommend pairing with a glass of Newton unfiltered chardonnay.

Next, take it up a notch for the ultimate fine wining and dining experience at one of San Antonio’s premier classic steakhouses, where they serve prime Akaushi beef, phenomenal seafood, and have one of the oldest, most elegant bars in the city.

Little Death

For a night to remember, start with a glass of wine in their old-world bar, accompanied by live jazz music on Friday or Saturday nights. To be fair, their preprohibition craft cocktails are also excellent, made with fresh-squeezed juices and an impressive list of spirits. It’s worth noting that the bar is still feeling the positive effects from when the renowned mixologist Sasha Petrosky trained the staff. Many have gone on to open up their bars since then.

After a few drinks, dinner is a delight in the sophisticated dining room. Whether you decide on the Chateaubriand, Rack of Colorado Spring Lamb, or Australian Cold Water Lobster Tail, the staff is trained to guide you to a perfect wine pairing, and that includes Texas Wines, including a few varietals from Bending Branch Winery.

LITTLE DEATH For an after-dinner excursion (or anytime after 1 pm, seven days a week), Little Death is a neighborhood favorite wine bar and shop just north of downtown along N. St. Mary’s Street. If you blink, you might pass it by, but you would kick yourself for doing so.

Restaurateur Chad Carey is the mastermind behind this little gem where natural and French wines reign supreme. The natural wine movement started in France, where grapes are grown with sustainable agricultural practices and minimal intervention, as well as entirely without additives.

In this way, without manipulation, the true flavors of the grapes can sing. “Some people argue it’s a return to how wine was made 100 years ago,” said Carey.

They recently launched Poptails with a Purpose, where a portion of poptails and poptail packages will go to benefit a local nonprofit. The best way to enjoy this special treat is on their patio overlooking the river, where you can watch your cares melt away as fast as your poptail.

Everyone knows the early bird catches the worm, but early risers in San Antonio also know they’re the first ones to catch all the fun.

On summer mornings, when the city is cool and quiet, it’s the best time for birds of a feather to flock together and scout out fun family adventures.

How do we know? A little bird told us. Actually, a few small birds and several big ones hunted and pecked out the best places for mom and pop to take their chicks on August mornings:

Ducklings Pato, Lalo, and Henry say, get your ducks in a row and go kayaking. These baby ducks cut a beautiful ripple in the San Antonio River in Southtown’s King William District near the Guenther Street Bridge when making a V formation behind their mother, Gloria. The ducklings love to watch kids kayak with their parents on this shady, quiet stretch of the river. This flat-water spot is easy for first-timers to navigate. Lalo quacks that Kayak rentals open at 9 a.m. at the Mission Adventure Tours trailer next to the San Antonio River Authority on East Guenther Street, where everyone will get a life vest, paddles, and kayaks. Parents accompany kids age 15 and younger, and toddlers two and older float with their parents in a tandem kayak. It’s not a guided tour, so families are free to float on their own alongside the ducks.

Henry insists folks paddle over to the O Henry Pedestrian Bridge. He thinks this pretty pedestrian walkway, a 138-footlong iron truss bridge on Johnson Street between South Main Avenue and King William Street, was named for him. It was

named for literary luminary William Sydney Porter, or “O. Henry,” who mentioned the bridge in some of his San Antoniobased stories. Gloria’s feathers get ruffled when people tell Henry it’s not his namesake bridge, so don’t mention that in front of the ducklings.

Downriver near Mission Espada, two tall blue herons, Harriet and Hortencia, also enjoy watch families kayak along the Mission Reach of the San Antonio River where there’s a Mission Adventure Tours rental Spot at Espada Park. They remind us to bring a water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and tennis shoes, and (like them) plan on getting wet.

Benny the Bluebird flits between the ancient chap el bell towers of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park each morning, and he tweets that he often sees bike riders make twoand three-mission tours, comprising either 8-mile or 15-mile trips.

Another popular birdwatching site is McAllister Park Blue Loop Trail, a 6.7-mile moderate-level walking path. With 10 restrooms, and playgrounds, it’s a fun place picnic tables, to take the kids and dogs. There’s a certain enchantment to summer nights when the heat of the day gives way to warm, gentle breezes. It’s a time when memories are made that last a lifetime. San Antonio is a perfect place to experience that magic. When the sun goes down, the lights flicker on until the River Walk is a glistening stream of color and laughter, and the city streets just above echo the lights and sound of people having fun. There’s plenty of fabulous nightlife, and some unique experiences that are what the locals call “puro San Antonio.”

THE SAGA The historic heart of downtown dates back to 1730 when Spanish settlers mapped out a grand cathedral fronting on a central plaza where citizens of New Spain congregated to work, play and pray. Today, the splendidly restored San Fernando, the oldest cathedral in the United States, remains a powerful draw for the faithful and fans of beautiful architecture, and the central plaza, revived and redesigned with a connection to the River Walk, is a peaceful oasis in a vibrant downtown. At night, the imposing façade of the church transforms into a canvas for San Antonio’s spectacular, free, nightly sound and light show, the San Antonio SAGA. A vibrant video projection, with a stirring soundtrack and narration, covers the 7,000 square feet of the cathedral’s front with brilliant images depicting the history and culture of San Antonio, from the time Native Americans gathered at the river’s sacred source to the high-tech present. Settle into one of the tables around the plaza or take a seat on the smooth old cobblestones for a breathtaking virtual trip through layers of time.

On the south side of the plaza, check out the grand old Romanesque Revival Bexar County Courthouse, and the splendidly restored 1800s fountain with its dazzling lighted sculpture of “Lady Justice.” And take time to spot one or all of the 30 special pavers, each representing an interesting moment in the city’s history.

CARRIAGE LIGHTS How about a magical ride in a private illuminated horse-drawn carriage? Big draft horses provide the real horsepower for the Yellow Rose & H.R.H Carriage or Lollypop Carriage companies. Each carriage is uniquely appointed and tour the heart of downtown beginning just before sunset. Summer nights are the perfect time for a cool ride, with veteran drivers pointing out places of interest as you go. The Mariachi Tradition Alive in San Antonio

What jazz is to New Orleans and the blues are to Memphis, mariachi music is to San Antonio. Decked-out in colorful, spangled Mexican charro costumes, mariachis grace restaurants playing songs by request.

Their repertoire includes sones (regional songs), polkas, waltzes, boleros (modern love ballads), rancheras (country "ranch" songs), and any popular song people want to hear. Classic Mexican stars Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, Javier Solís, along with ranchera music greats such as José Alfredo Jiménez, Antonio Aguilar and Vicente Fernández, have made mariachi the best-known style of Mexican music in the world.

Mariachi music begins with Hernán Cortés’ arrival in Mexico in 1519. The Spanish conquistadors introduced Old World baroque musical styles and instruments such as the violin, guitar, and harp. Indigenous musicians quickly mastered European musical traditions. African slaves contributed as well to the mix of musical influences that developed into various mestizo folk music traditions, including mariachi music. While the roots are rural, modern mariachi music grew after the Mexican Revolution in the 1920s, when traditional mariachis from various parts of the country began migrating to Mexico City, where Plaza Garibaldi became the mecca of mariachi music.

Mariachis attire is inspired by Mexico’s charro (cowboys) or horseman tradition. The uniform called traje de charro is a Mexican adaptation of a Spanish horseman’s riding outfit – fitted trousers, short jacket, embroidered belt, bow tie, a wide-brimmed hat, and ankle-high boots – worn by Mexico’s rural upper class. While Jalisco black and silver is considered the most formal, today’s mariachis wear many different colors. Women don similar outfits, but with 32 RIO Magazine

a full-length skirt instead of trousers, or they may wear elaborately decorated folkloric dresses.

Today, a full mariachi group consists of two trumpets, up to six violins, a vihuela (a small lute-like guitar), a nylonstring classical guitar, and a guitarrón (a large, deep-bodied acoustic bass). All members may sing. Harp, guitarra de golpe (a five-string Mexican version of a Spanish guitar), and an additional guitar and/or trumpet, are optional, with other instruments added as needed. Mariachi groups range from a few musicians to full-size, 12-piece, or more show bands.

San Antonio is the cradle of mariachi education in Texas.

Isabel “Belle” San Miguel, known as “The Mother of Mariachi,” began the first mariachi class at Lanier High School in 1969. In 1975, she taught the first mariachi class at San Antonio College. Today, more than 2,000 schools around the country offer mariachi programs. HISTORIC MARKET SQUARE In the 1920s and 1930s, La Plaza del Zacate or Haymarket Square in San Antonio was where people went to hear popular Mexican tunes sung by the famous duo of Rocha and Martínez and the family of Lydia Mendoza. Today, this tradition continues in the same area, now known as Historic Market Square.

Mi Tierra Café opened in 1941 as a little three-table café for early risers at San Antonio’s Mercado. Today, this world-famous Mexican bakery and Tex-Mex restaurant has room for 500, and every day is Fiesta. Mariachis and Mi Tierra go together like chips and salsa.

The restaurant will even hire the musicians for you and add the cost to your bill. In the restaurant’s lobby is the Mariachi Bar, featuring El Mariachi Oro y Plata playing weekends beginning at 9 p.m. Mariachis also stroll the other La Familia Cortez restaurants and bars at Market Square – La Margarita Restaurant & Oyster Bar and Viva Villa Taqueria.

Mariachis and folkloric dancers perform on stage in the middle of the Food Court in the Farmer’s Market Building. Outdoor stages in Market Square bustle with musicians celebrating Cinco de Mayo and Día de los Muertos, among other festivities, including special weekend Fiesta-type events. Working artists offer their handiworks from stalls and carts, and local retailers sell quality Mexican artifacts, clothing, and art.

While dining in a restaurant, it’s customary to tip mariachi groups by the song when they perform for your table. The going rate is $10 per song for groups of three performers or less, four or more performers is $15.

MARIACHI RESTAURANTS In the early 1960s, Los Camperos, the bestknown mariachi group in the country, helped popularize the music among non-Hispanics. In 1969, they opened La Fonda de Los Camperos restaurant in Los Angeles, the world’s first mariachi restaurant. Many Mexican restaurants across the country followed suit, and eventually, the concept migrated to Mexico. Across San Antonio, you’ll find plenty of Mexican restaurants with strolling mariachis.

Along the San Antonio River Walk, an outdoor table at The Original Mexican Restaurant, Casa Rio, or Acenar is a good bet to attract mariachi serenades. Mariachis often show up during Happy Hour at Tex-Mex landmark Los Barrios.

MARIACHI MASS The Sunday noon Mariachi Mass at the Mission San Jose Church is a half-century-old family tradition. Sister Frances Jean Terrazas, who heard a mariachi mass for the first time in Cuernavaca, Mexico, persuaded local musicians

Jesse and Josephine Orta to present the city’s first mariachi mass on Easter Sunday 1969. The Ortas and their extended family have continued to lead the choir and mariachi group for three generations.

The 30-member Mariachi Choir at San Fernando Cathedral performs at the cathedral’s 5 p.m.

Saturday liturgical celebration, called the Mariachi Mass. While the mass is conducted in English, the choir sings hymns in either Spanish, English or both languages - accompanied by the instruments and rhythms of mariachis.

FORD MARIACHI FESTIVAL Each spring for three nights, during the city-wide Fiesta event, the River Walk comes alive with mariachi performances floating on boats. They serenade downtown visitors sitting outdoors on patios sipping cocktails and dining.

BE AMUSED This year has been a rollercoaster of emotions, so a trip to Six Flags Fiesta Texas should be a breeze. With new socially distanced policies and procedures, you can still be amused at the park and let loose for a while. Get creative with the face masks, and try a Daffy Duck bill or a Bugs Bunny snoot. It’s not ideal, but the mask is a great excuse to say you didn’t hear when your kid asked for a funnel cake - for the third time. PATRIOTIC SPIRIT This month, travelers in the ticketing area of Terminal A will behold a bold, inspiring patriotic art exhibit, including wining pieces from an Air Force art contest. Another rotating art installation in the Terminal A upper level is a large-scale photo exhibit dubbed “The Invisible

Diamond: 100 Years of Negro League Baseball.” Be sure also to look for the City of Service exhibit, featuring a collection of 33 commissioned works inspired by San Antonio’s “Military City – USA” identity.

Even the parking garages are bedecked with eye-catching local art.

Pass beneath the Paseo Walkway, a colorful moving skyline grid that responds to the position of the sun and features high-tech lights flashing to rhythmic sounds. Then don’t miss the art at the elevators.

Murals by five local artists not only remind visitors where they parked, but they also add a colorful splash of San Antonio flavor to their journey. While driving in, be sure not to miss Adelante San Antonio!

The birthplace of aviation was Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, but aviation grew up in San Antonio, and Stinson is part of its childhood.

MUSIC IN THE AIR Live music takes center stage near the food courts, as the San Antonio Airport System (SAAS) relaunched its SAT Live Stream Concert Series, Mondays through Fridays at 1 p.m. These live performances are streamed online so that armchair travelers can enjoy the music at home, too.
