Welcome Friends! San Antonio didn’t set out to earn the nickname “Military City U.S.A.” but we sure did come by it honestly. It was a gradual process starting back in 1845 when the U.S. Army arrived in San Antonio and set up Camp Almus near the Alamo to oversee the annexation of the Republic of Texas into the United States. Years of building on this foundation from every branch of the armed services has built a strong military presence throughout our city. Today, every branch of the armed forces is represented in our city through medical facilities and monuments to training and graduation. In 1999 congress designated May as Military Appreciation month. This issue of Rio is dedicated to all the brave men and women who protect our great nation and our freedom. Throughout San Antonio you will see our collective admiration for their sacrifice through war memorials, a USO center downtown and sponsored dinners every Friday night at the Buckhorn Saloon. We are particularly proud of Yellow Ribbon Project that affords everyone, including our visitors, the opportunity to honor and express appreciation to all who serve now or in the past through the $5 purchase of a Yellow Ribbon displayed May 2-16. VFW Post 76 Serving Veterans & Community Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 76, is the oldest VFW post in Texas. Located on the northern side of downtown on Tenth Street west of Broadway, it is not only a place of gathering for local veterans, but it’s a place for serving the community. It’s also open to the public, which is unique for VFWs. By Edmond Ortiz

The house itself dates back to the early 1900s when Van Petty, a lumber dealer and real estate owner, became owner of the homestead. Petty solicited the help of Atler B. Ayers, an architect who designed the Tower Life building downtown, to design the structure. The Petty home was finished in 1904 on the northern banks of the San Antonio River. The Victorian-style house stands out with its Corinthian columns, veranda, stained glass windows and front stair landing. At one time, it featured 17 rooms, five fireplaces and two kitchens. Post members enjoy publicizing in a pamphlet and on their website the presence of two ghosts said to be roaming the grounds – one girl running up and down the stairs, and an older man moving furniture. The entrance as well as the bottom floor wood trim, window trim and windows. A porcelain pedestal sink, cedar chest and porcelain floors can be found in the women’s bathroom on the second floor.

With the passage of World War I, troops returning home sought a central gathering spot to socialize, swap war stories and help each other readjust to peacetime life locally. Among those returning WWI veterans was Olive Scott Petty, one of three sons to Van Petty. Olive Scott Petty and his brothers created Petty Geophysical Engineering Co., working out of the Petty homestead. Veterans of the Spanish-American War got together and developed a charter for VFW Post 76. The charter was issued June 26, 1917, and the organizers and other initial members would go on to meet at the Spanish Governor’s Palace downtown until 1946 when Van Petty – himself a veteran - donated full use of his mansion to the post membership. In time, the city of San Antonio formally recognized the Petty home as a historic structure. Post members acknowledged the uniqueness of

the site and opened up the facility to the public. Nowadays, veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the first Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq meet at the site for post membership meetings, events or just to relax with some refreshments. In the last 10 years, the post has expanded from 300 members to more than 1,600 with the oldest being Tomas Fajardo, a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. After retirement from service some soldiers experience trouble coping with active duty experiences. Beyond counseling, casual visits to VFW Post 76 contribute to healing of the heart and soul by sharing a beer and conversation with a friend. The post provides a feeling of safety where soldiers feel comfortable-like a home. But a range of non-veteran community members also enjoy social aspects at VFW Post 76, especially at nights and weekends when crowds are larger and music is played. Admission is free for the public. Because the post is accessible from the Riverwalk’s Museum Reach, tourists and other area residents may easily walk or ride a bike onto the grounds while the post is open. VFW Post 76 has an honor guard and ladies’ auxiliary. Certain rooms inside the mansion and adjacent former Petty carriage house may be rented out for an event, a service that is open the public. Many parts of the post pay enduring tributes. Outside the front main door lies a path of bricks engraved with the names of veterans and active duty personnel. One room is named the Mendoza room,

in memory of U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Matthew Mendoza who was killed in action June 20, 2008 in Afghanistan. Several generals and other high-ranking officers from the military’s different branches have visited the post on special occasions. The facility has received national recognition. Last summer, post Commander Albert Mireles went to St. Louis to accept the All-American Post Award from the national VFW and an All-American Post Commander Award.In addition to having formal VFW-mandated ceremonies, Post 76 members host family-friendly public events and other activities. The VFW Post 76 motto – We honor the dead by helping the living. The post puts on a children’s Easter egg hunt, a back-to-school festival in which children receive a free haircut, and a breakfast with Santa Claus where children receive a free gift and meal. Members, guests and supporting organizations donate their money or time to make these community events happen. Other events at the post, known throughout the city, include a Fiestasanctioned 10th Street River Festival, the Taco Truck Throwdown and a craft beer festival. VFW Post 76 is known for its’ peaceful surroundings and for serving the community. Membership is a brotherhood. The post is open 10AM to 12:30AM Mondays through Thursdays, and Sundays, and 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. For more information, visit www.vfwpost76ontheriverwalk.org or call 223-4581.

May 16 (5pm-6, Tops In Blue Concert/ 6-7pm Parade, Arneson Theatre) America’s Armed Forces Military Parade This parade is dedicated to the men and women of the Armed Forces; past, present and future. 26 patriotically-decorated floats carrying all 5 branches of military personnel ranging from enlisted to a general. Patriotic music is played from the floats and on stage to serenade the floats throughout the 2 1/2 mile downtown area of the River Walk including the Arneson Theatre. This is one of the largest Parades held on the River Walk. It is televised live locally and syndicated in 26 markets throughout the United Sates including the Pentagon Channel. The 2015 Grand Marshall’s are 3 Medal of Honor recipients General Patrick Brady, Sgt. Santiago Erevia, Sgt. Clarence Sasser. The primary parade sponsors are Budweiser and Silver Eagle Distributor’s. H San Antonio is known as “Military City USA”. It has had a military presence for nearly 300 years and is home one of the Nation’s largest populations of active and retired military personnel. H The Republic of Texas had its own standing army called the Army of the Republic of Texas. When Texas became part of the United States in 1845 it was merged with the US Army. H San Antonio National Cemetery is the oldest national cemetery in Texas. It is the final resting place for thousands of military veterans among them 281 Buffalo Soldiers. H The first military flight in the United States took place in San Antonio, Texas in 1910 at Fort Sam Houston and lasted just 7 ½ minutes. H Charles Lindbergh, best known for his solo flight around the world in 1927, attributed his success to the flight training he received at the same airfield here in San Antonio. H The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, originally known as the Municipal Auditorium was built as a monument to honor the soldiers killed during World War 1. There is also a sculpture located on the property dedicated to the mothers of the soldiers who served during the war. H Robert O’Malley, a San Antonian, is the first Marine Corp living recipient of the Medal of Honor awarded for his service during the Vietnam War. H

Only a few of the millions of visitors to the Paseo del Rio realize the existence of a vital military “outpost” less than 100 paces from the San Antonio River. Tucked away on the ground level of the Riverbend Parking Garage next to Casa Rio restaurant, the USO of San Antonio annually provides a home away from home for approximately 35,000 members of the armed forces including active-duty personnel, reservists and national guardsmen, and their families. The 5,000-square-foot retreat that’s “like a big living room” exists to “lift the spirits of America’s troops,” says Kristy Walston, USO director. Since “Military City USA” is an important training location, many USO patrons are young enlistees who’ve never been far from home. They appreciate the USO’s homey atmosphere that includes comfortable seating for reading or just relaxing, multiple TVs, videogaming rooms, pool tables, a snack bar, a movie-theater room and a children’s area. Other amenities include free wireless Internet and computer access as well as faxing and printing capabilities. One of the most popular attractions is the “battle station,” with eight Xbox 360s interconnected for competitive electronic gamers. Saturday Samplers, the USO’s most-popular activity, occurs at lunchtime every Saturday as nearby restaurants – Rio Rio Cantina, Rita’s on the River and China Garden – feed hungry patrons with something other than chow-hall fare at no charge. Walston, who also oversees a USO facility in Terminal B at San Antonio International Airport, points with particular pride to United Through Reading, which enables a service member to be recorded on DVD reading a book to his or her child, then mailing the book and DVD to the child and family back home. USO (United Service Organizations) originated in 1941 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt approached a half-dozen national charitable groups and tasked them with providing emotional support for the growing number of troops preparing to fight in World War II. “A lot of people associate the USO with road shows headlined by Bob Hope and other stars,” Walston notes, “but they don’t realize how the scope of USO has grown through the years.” San Antonio’s USO, which receives no federal government funding, relies on the United Way, the City of San Antonio and generous corporate, individual and organizational donors to remain open 365 days a year. Four full-time staff members and 165 dedicated volunteers help USO accomplish its local mission. “We’re here because each member of the military we serve has a unique story,” Walston says. “We feel honored to support each one of them because of the sacrifices they’re making for our nation.”

TH E R E PU L IC OF TE X A S Food Worth Fighting For, since 1975 In 1836 Texas won its independence from Mexico to become the independent country The Republic of Texas. One of the major battles of this fight for independence was fought at The Alamo here in San Antonio. The siege on the Alamo lasted 13 days, after the Alamo fell on March 6th, 1836, the Texians used the battle cry “Remember the Alamo” to rally their citizens and defeat the Mexican Army. Texas gained its independence from Mexico a few months later. It is the embodiment of this history that inspired the present day The Republic of Texas Restaurant, which is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year.

The restaurant which originally opened in July 1975 as The Royal Street Crossing Restaurant was only the fourth River Walk restaurant to open after Hemisfair in 1968. In January 1990, the restaurant was reopened as it is currently known, The Republic of Texas Restaurant, Inc. With the reopening the owners envisioned a restaurant that would embody the history and culture of the original Texians. This love of history, country and culture is evident throughout the restaurant including the building in which it resides. The limestone walls of The Republic of Texas Restaurant, Inc. are 24-30 inch thick limestone blocks used from the outer walls of the Alamo. The walls are decorated with historical artifacts, photos and even Republic of Texas currency. The Republic of Texas Restaurant, Inc. now cooks up our famous Texican Cuisine food in what was once the office of Robert H.H. Hugmann, commonly referred to as the “Father of the River Walk”. It was his vision that led to the development of the modern day River Walk. Our diverse menu is based upon the foods that the Texians would traditionally eat along with a few modern day twists and updates. In the spirit of the original Texians we like to say it is “Food Worth Fighting For”.

A tour of downtown San Antonio’s memorials to our military heroes can take us from the birth of Texas to the middle of the 20th century. While history is written in human sacrifice, its memory is preserved in stone and bronze. Beginnings with the Battle of the Alamo, and continuing through the Vietnam War, follow the sacrifice and the heroism of our local heroes in sculptural form. Alamo Cenotaph: While touring Alamo Plaza, site of the Battle of the Alamo, take a moment to look up – at 60 feet of grey marble towering over the Plaza. The Alamo Cenotaph is dedicated to the defenders of the Alamo. It’s an empty tomb, as the bodies of the slain were burned. The Texas Centennial Commission erected the Cenotaph in 1939 to celebrate our state’s 100th birthday. Figures depicting some of the defenders, including James Bowie, James B. Bonham, William B. Travis, and David Crockett were designed and executed by Italian sculptor Pompeo Coppini.

The Tobin Cultural Arts Center for the Performing Arts grew out of a San Antonio’s Municipal Auditorium – dedicated in 1926 as a memorial to those who died in WWI. The white marble War Mothers Memorial honoring the mothers whose sons who fought in World War I was erected at the corner of the arena in 1938 by the San Antonio Chapter No. 2 of American War Mothers. A recently completed major renovation transformed the Auditorium into the spectacular Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. It is named after patron of the arts Robert Tobin, whose father, Edgar, was a WWI flying ace. Today, veterans and their heroism are honored in many ways in the Center’s immediate vicinity. The Medal of Honor River Portal is our city’s newest war memorial. Located between the Museum Reach of the River Walk and the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and unveiled in July, 2014, the Portal

pays homage to Medal of Honor recipients with connections to San Antonio. Seven granite pylons with brass plaques line a walkway connecting the Museum Reach of the San Antonio River Walk to the Tobin Center. The plaques list the names of 32 Medal of Honor recipients who were born, raised, enlisted or retired here. Former Mayor Phil Hardberger who served as a B-47 bomber pilot, generated the idea and Bexar County earmarked $8 million in venue tax funding for the monument. Later, funding was tied to the Tobin renovation. The idea was to keep within the spirit of honoring the heroism of local military service members. Soldiers honored at the site range from privates to generals and even President Theodore Roosevelt (San Juan Hill, 1898). From George Kitchen (Indian Campaigns1874) to 10 soldiers of the Vietnam War, along with General Douglas MacArthur (WWII, 1942), and his father, Arthur McArthur, Jr. (Civil War, 1863), all were honored with our nation’s highest award for heroism and gallantry. Veterans Memorial Plaza is 0.7 mile from River Center Mall via E. Commerce St. and Navarro St. or Bowie St. to 4th St. The Medal of Honor River Portal can be reached from the River Walk Museum Reach as well as from the main entrance area of the Tobin Center. Just south of Tobin Center’s main entrance, bounded by Auditorium Circle, Jefferson St., and E. Martin St. lies Veterans Memorial Plaza. Within the small park two monuments pay homage to veterans of the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. February 1986: The City of San Antonio and Vietnam Veterans Memorial of San Antonio, Inc. entered into a contract for the design and construction of Veterans Memorial Plaza which was funded through charitable donations from the general public. Fund raising efforts were organized by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial of San Antonio, Inc. organization. The Korean Memorial, directly across Auditorium Circle from Tobin’s main entrance, stands the 1994 Korean War Memorial, Night Watch, by sculptor, Jonas Perkins It represents a snow-covered foxhole, surmounted by two infantrymen, visible from the shoulders up, bundled against the cold. A plaque bears the legend, ““C” Company

members killed in action, and the names of men from San Antonio who lost their lives in the Korean conflict: Richard Alvarado, Cesar Bensoni, Otis Haynes, John Howell, Edwin Kruciak, Humberto Regalado and Dionisio Tristan. Near the Korean War Memorial is the 1995 50th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge plaque. “Hill 881 South,” the Vietnam Veterans Memorial sits a few yards away. Ten feet tall and weighing more than 10 tons, it’s believed to be the largest sculpture of its type in the United States. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial of San Antonio, Inc., a non-profit corporation chartered in the state of Texas by John D. Baines and Maj. Bill C. Stensland, commissioned Austin Deuel to create the memorial. On April 30, 1967, the dramatic sight of radioman Donald Hassock helping an injured soldier inspired Deuel to draw the picture that 19 years later would become the model for San Antonio’s memorial. November 9th 1986: A crowd estimated at 10,000 veterans, family members, active-duty military personnel and citizens, from as far away as New York and California, attended the dedication ceremony. General William C. Westmoreland, commanding general of all forces in Vietnam (1964-1968), was the keynote speaker. 141st Infantry Regiment Monument Overlooking the River Walk, at the intersection of S. Alamo St. and Market St., stands a shield-shaped granite monument to the 141st “Alamo” regiment of the 36th Infantry Division. The 141 proudly proclaims itself “The Oldest Militia Unit in Texas,” dating to the Texas Revolution of 1836. On September 9, 1943, in the second year of WWII, the Western Allies launched their first amphibious assault on mainland Europe. Among the American soldiers in the U.S. Army’s 36th Infantry (Texas Division) landing under fire on a beach south of Salerno, Italy, was 21-year-old Alfred Dietrick, of the 141. Dietrick, a native of San Antonio, designed the monument and in 1991 the monument was placed. Now 93, Dietrick still attends yearly ceremonies at the site of the monument to commemorate the Salerno landing.

Field”, in honor of Lt George E. M. Kelly. Kelly was the first military pilot killed in a plane crash on May 11, 1911. It served as a flying training base and evolved from training to a substantial aircraft depot maintenance hub until 2001. Ground was broken for the construction of Brooks Field honoring Cadet Sidney J. Brooks, a San Antonio native who died in a plane crash at Kelly. Serving for many years as a flying training base, by the late 1950s it became the focal point for Air Force aerospace medical research.

Local Military Bases locked, loaded & full of historical ammo By Carole Miller

Throughout the past three centuries San Antonio has been occupied by one army or another from the Conquistadors to the Texas Rangers to both Confederate and Union troops. The Alamo City served as the recruiting and training grounds for Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders and is the birthplace of military aviation with the first flight taking place right here at Ft. Sam Houston. Today, San Antonio is home to Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) which includes three separate installations: Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base and Randolph Air Force Base. With all this military tradition comes the responsibility to remember the men and women who gave their lives for the freedom we so often take for granted. San Antonio has three museums located on our military bases that are free and open to the public: The United States Air Force Security Forces Museum and The Airman Heritage Museum located at Lackland Air Base and the Army Medical Department Museum located at Ft. Sam Houston. United States Air Force Security Forces Museum The USAF Security Forces Museum is the only establishment in the world dedicated to honoring the history of first responders, military law enforcement, the Air Force police force and special security programs such as training working and bomb-sniffing dogs. It was established in 1979 to honor all active duty, reserve and retired Air Force Security Police. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

There is a humbling Hall of Honor honoring those who have fallen in the line of duty and inspiring exhibits for those awarded the Air Force Cross, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star for Valor and Airman’s Medal. Other fascinating exhibits include: Air Police 1947-1966, Security Police in South East Asia 1967-1973, Security Police in the 1970s and Presidential Protection. During World War II, the Army Air Corps realized the need for a force to protect the air base while aviators and their crews were out bombing the German countryside. When the Nazi blitzkrieg threatened the Allied war effort by sending paratroops and airborne forces to capture or destroy American air bases, the USAF Security Forces were born. Security Forces have a law enforcement side to them, but their real purpose is to serve and protect those who serve and protect. If the Alamo defenders had a security force, Santa Anna’s men would have never breached that wall. Unfortunately for Colonel Travis, hindsight is 20/20. Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) Lackland JBSA is located about 13 miles due west of the Alamo via Hwy 90. That’s a 20 to 30 minute drive (depending on traffic) or just about a day by horseback. Both the USAF Security Forces Museum and the Airman Heritage Museum are free and open to the public. In order to enter JBSA locations, visitors are required to have a valid form of identification and to have a sponsor with a valid DoD ID card. Families of basic training graduates have clearance and there is a graduation every week on Friday so the museum is open longer on Thursday nights to accommodate visiting families of basic trainees. The newest exhibit, currently on display, is dedicated to the Tuskegee Airmen, a brave group of African-American men and women who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. The exhibit, the first of its kind in the Air Force, depicts their hard work, sacrifice and dogged determination while blazing a trail for racial equality. The official grand opening takes place at the museum on May 28 at 10 a.m. and the public is invited to join the celebration. The Airman Heritage Museum includes several dozen historical USAF military aircraft as well as collections from the World War I and World War II air maintenance shop, USAF basic training dorms, Women in the Air Force (WAF), pre-flight and the Lackland USAF Shooting Team collection. The transition to a more fun experience, however, has already begun. “Most museums are static. Our museum will be more like Disney with an Air Force flavor,” explains Rudolph Purificato, Air Education and Training Command Curator. “We are currently creating a more interactive, techsavvy experience including rotating, national exhibits, computer technology where kids can see themselves age into an airman, holograms, simulators and many hands-on exhibits that will entertain and excite millennials, young airmen and their children.” The new museum will be the only museum in the country dedicated to enlisted heritage, the largest field museum in the Air Force and will showcase all Air Force specialties and career fields. Army Medical Department Museum The Army Medical Department Museum (AMEDD), located at Ft. Sam Houston, is currently undergoing a facelift and is scheduled to re-open in June 2015. Affectionately referred to as “Fort Sam” by the locals, this Army post is the birthplace of military aviation and the home of Army medicine. The AMEDD Museum will trace the rich history of this U.S. Army post from 1845 to the present.

These attractions will satisfy even the most avid historians

The National Museum of the Pacific War is the only one in the U.S. solely dedicated to telling the story of WWII in the Pacific.

Military history buffs take note. You definitely will want to get out of San Antonio. It’s the only way to see the National Museum of the Pacific War — the only museum in the country solely dedicated to telling the story of WWII in the Pacific. It’s located in Fredericksburg, which is also home to the Hangar Hotel with its WWII era atmosphere and décor that’s guaranteed to give guests more than just another hotel stay. Don’t want to leave San Antonio? Well just a short drive from downtown, the Texas Air Museum offers unique aircraft and artifacts, also from the WWII era.

The complex also hosts battery reenactments called living history programs throughout the year where beach invasions, special effects and flamethrowers become just another part of the museum experience. The next living history program is slated for Memorial Day weekend.

National Museum of the Pacific War Located about 70 miles northwest of San Antonio in the quaint and charming town of Fredericksburg, this six-acre complex is home to not one but three military museums. The Nimitz Museum is the original facility and is housed in the old Steamboat Hotel, the childhood home of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. This museum chronicles the life of Admiral Nimitz — from his years as a boy growing up in the hotel to his impressive naval career as commander-in-chief of the U.S. Pacific Forces in WWII.

The George H.W. Bush Gallery is the highlighted main gallery that tells the chronological story of WWII in the Pacific. It consists of 33,000 square feet of exhibit space and displays 900 artifacts and 15 macro artifacts. The complex also houses the Pacific Combat Zone, which is available through

It can take a couple of days to see all of the displays and exhibits at the museum, so the $14 tickets are good for two days giving visitors a chance to take the time to really enjoy all that the facility offers or to take a break and come back. The museum is open daily.

Hangar Hotel There’s no shortage of places to stay in Fredericksburg, but aviation and military history enthusiasts will want to hunker down at the Hangar Hotel. Designed to look like a 1940’s WWII hangar — including the rounded roof — the 50-room hotel offers more than just a unique façade. On the inside, this boutique hotel features custom carpet and tile, granite, fine woods and —in keeping with the outside façade — the furnishings and decorations are all from the WWII era. The rooms are all nonsmoking and feature king-size beds.

On the outside, large palm trees, a 10-foot tall WWII searchlight, a pin-up art billboard and landscaping all work together to promote a South Pacific atmosphere. Also, the ramp in front of the hotel has a fully flyable, 1946 North American Navion parked on it. The Hangar Hotel is right next to the runway ramp area of the Gillespie County Airport giving guests a close-up view of air traffic in the area, including landings and take offs. After a long day, guests can go to the Officer’s Club inside the hotel where amenities such as a fireplace, a grand piano, a pool table and a full bar await them. The club is open Thursday through Saturday and features live entertainment. Adjacent to the Officer’s Club is a small meeting room that can be used for birthday parties and special events. When guests are hungry, the Airport Diner keeps the 1940’s WWII spirit alive with a classic diner look that includes soda fountain stools and booths. The diner is only open for breakfast and lunch.

Texas Air Museum The Texas Air Museum’s goal is to tell the story of Texas and San Antonio’s role in the development of military air power. It also honors aviation pioneers, technical accomplishments of aviation and shines light on those who gave their lives defending this country. The museum is located at historic Stinson Field, about 15 minutes south of downtown San Antonio. Stinson Field is the second oldest continuously operating airport in the United States and the oldest one west of the Mississippi. Some of the first military aircraft flights started here and it served as San Antonio’s first municipal airport. The Texas Air Museum has been in operation since 1999 and is home to a collection of vintage aircraft from the WWII era from both the Pacific and European theaters. It also houses a wide collection of other aircraft, vehicles, weapons, uniforms and historical artifacts.

The Gillespie County Fairgrounds are adjacent to the hotel and a wide variety of events are held there throughout the year including horse racing, county fair, car shows, tractor shows and gun and knife shows.

The facility educates visitors about the history of the Stinson family, who were early aviation pioneers, and delves into why San Antonio is deemed the birthplace of American military aviation. Many aircraft from aviation’s infant years can be seen here including Katherine Stinson’s Bleriot. Stinson was one of the first women in the U.S. to obtain a pilot’s license.

Military Appreciation… River Walk Style The importance of Americans expressing appreciation to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces is not a new concept. Parades in their honor are not new either; however a river parade honoring these brave defenders of freedom is definitely unique! The Paseo del Rio Association is proud to honor the men and women who protect our freedom with the 4th annual America’s Armed Forces River Parade on Saturday, May 16, 2015. The entire day swells with PATRIOTISM.

Yellow Ribbon Project The public sponsors yellow ribbons in honor of friends and loved ones who currently serve or who have served in any branch of the armed forces. Volunteers hang the ribbons on trees along the 2 1/2 mile downtown area of the River Walk. Proceeds from each $5 ribbon sales help offset parade expenses. www.theSanAntonioRiverWalk.com Tops in Blue concert Tops In Blue will perform a free concert on the Arneson Theatre stage from 5-6pm and serenade the attendees sitting in the Arneson throughout the parade from 6-7. The Tops In Blue is a touring performance ensemble made up of active duty members of the United Stated Air Force. The group has delighted, deployed members of the Air Force since 1953 with concerts around the globe as well as performing across the country for events such as this. Medal of Honor Recipients serve as Grand Marshals This years’ parade will have three Grand Marshals. Each is a Medal of Honor recipient; Patrick Brady of New Braunfels, Santiago Erevia of San Antonio and Clarence Sasser of Rosharon, Texas. Each was awarded a Medal of Honor for heroism during the Vietnam War. We are proud to honor these men who have sacrificed so much for our freedom and our country. They are symbolic of all the brave men and women who serve.
