Spring is a time for fresh beginnings! This March marks a fresh beginning for me personally as the new editor of Rio Magazine. My love for San Antonio and the River Walk is rejuvenated as I see my hometown through your eyes, the visitor. In this issue you will find all things Spring! And with so much to see and do this time of year in our beautiful city you may just have to plan a return visit. In Texas, wild flowers usher in spring. Our wild flower story on Page 47 will inspire you to take selfies in the blue bonnets and post on Facebook. Your friends and family are sure to be jealous as they endure cold weather back home. And, if you are lucky enough to be visiting the River Walk March 14 and 15 you will see it dyed eco-friendly green and renamed the “River Shannon”. Join us for the annual St Patrick’s Day Parade and festivities on March 15, Noon till 6PM. Texans from throughout San Antonio and the Hill Country partake in the annual celebration. Although the San Antonio River Walk is in bloom throughout the year, March is the perfect time to check out the fifteen miles of diversified vegetation on the River Walk. Beginning at the Museum Reach, passing through the Downtown stretch and winding up at Mission Reach, each area has its own special identity ranging from natural habitat vegetation along the Museum Reach to sophisticated urban planting downtown to the replacement of historical grasses and wild flowers along the Mission Reach. According to archaeological evidence, human habitation along the San Antonio River has been traced back 10,000 years which means the vegetation along the river has a history dating back to the Spanish mission development along the river in the 1700s which focused on native vegetation and edible crops.

Overseen by the San Antonio River Authority, more than 70,000 plant species mark the roughly three mile path from the San Antonio Art Museum to the locks/dam located 12

at Brooklyn Avenue, heading toward the Downtown River Walk. Plants are selected in this is area for their beauty, hardiness and wildlife appeal. Adding interest to the floral beauty of the area is a colony of 10,000 Mexican Free-tailed bats under the I-35 bridge which make its early evening appearance from April to October and a series of interactive art installations along the way. If you take the River Taxi, you can start at the Art Museum and hop off at Pearl, a complex of outstanding restaurants, unique retail shops and the San Antonio branch of the famed Culinary Institute of America. The taxi also stops at VFW Post 76, the oldest in Texas or any of the River Walk hotels and restaurants in the Downtown area. It’s a 24-hour pass to hop on and off the barge and enjoy the River Walk to the fullest.
DOWNTOWN
Managed by the City of San Antonio Operations, the bustling Downtown River Walk features urban style plantings with hanging baskets, giant containers, pockets of brilliant annuals and magnificent cypress trees. Springtime is a burst of color on the Walk with vibrant flowers in full bloom. Approximately 85,000 annuals and perennials are planted www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com
each year. The strip features a variety of restaurants and shops and adds a bit of urban bustle to the inspirational Museum and Mission Walks. A hodge podge garden approach is taken rather than the formal and natural gardens in the other areas of the River Walk. No two areas are alike and there is a lot of history in our approach to the gardens. We don’t have a big budget so we follow the River Walk’s original planner, Robert Harvey Harold Hugman and use plants that are hardy, colorful and easy to maintain. Plantings are changed four times a year and to keep a new look.
MISSION REACH
Following the River from Downtown through the King William area, just minutes from Downtown, the Mission Reach River Walk rambles more than eight miles and is accessible by foot, bike, or canoe/paddle boat (which can be rented). Unlike the Museum and Downtown landscapes, the Mission River Walk presents a look at the past with historical native plants, grasses and trees that could have been there when members of a Spanish expedition celebrated mass on the River banks with Franciscan priest Damien Massanet who renamed the River San Antonio in honor of St. Anthony.
According to San Antonio River Authority’s map/brochure, the ecosystems restoration process along the Mission River Walk is being accomplished by sowing over 10,000 pounds of seed to re-produce 60 native grasses and wildflower species. Breathtaking fields of bluebonnets, Texas’ state flower, will bloom each spring. More than 23,000 trees and shrubs are also being planted to reflect the entire area’s vegetation history covering more than 334 acres. Plants have been added to attract butterflies and a wide variety of birds. The River Walk is a mecca for bird watchers who can spot many species just blocks from Downtown. Currently, artists are creating original natural looking raised terminals at each of the missions for birdwatchers to further enjoy the experience. The first has been completed at Mission Conception. Waxy O’Connor’s is more than it appears from the narrow pathways alongside the Riverwalk. Inside this cozy restaurant and bar, patrons will find an authentic Irish craftsmanship in the details of the pub. Many of the features of the pub were in-fact, made in County Monaghan, Ireland, and then carefully crated and shipped over to Galveston, Texas where it was then trucked and transported to the Riverwalk. The great effort and attention to detail is certainly reflected in the pub itself. Details such as the rich mahogany back bar, the rustic yet warm wooden furniture, lighting fixtures, and Irish artwork will allure visitors inside to enjoy the charming atmosphere.
Nestled in North Central San Antonio, The Irish Pub is a favorite among locals to grab their favorite pint. This dive bar has ample seating, both tables and wooden booths. You won’t find menus at this hotspot but the drink specials give the bar a competitive edge among surrounding watering holes. Although on most nights patrons are more like to hear rap or rock beats than Irish jigs blaring from the corner jukebox, the pool table and pinball machine invite the thirsty to settle in for the night. $
Just underneath the Hilton Palacio Del Rio, at the River Walk level, lies an Irish lair of food and fun. This seemingly quaint restaurant is home to several talented pianists and Irish atmosphere. The musical entertainment creates a friendly pub environment. Durty Nelly’s opened it’s doors over 40 years ago on the Riverwalk after the general manager of the Hilton Palacio del Rio was inspired from a trip to Ireland. This pub is a replica of the original Durty Nelly’s in Ireland which has been open over 390 years as part of the Bunratty Castle in Limerick, Clare Country.

The St. Patrick’s Day celebration will showcase bits of traditional Irish culture with Irish dancers performing jigs and inviting guests to join. Guests can also enjoy live music from the San Antonio Firefighters as they perform Celtic tunes on the bagpipes. Riverboat Rides You have two great options for cruising the river: River tours with informative guides who provide the city’s rich history or river taxis to take you from point A to point B via the city’s most inviting waterway. Double-Decker Buses Enjoy a 360-degree view from your perch atop an open-roof bus while touring many of San Antonio’s major landmarks. Oaks course at TPC San Antonio Oaks course at TPC San Antonio is the obvious choice for best in the area. That being said, move up a set of tees. Like many of the premier TPC courses, this was built by Greg Norman with tour players in mind. And thus, you will need your A-game to feel good about your score. The slope rating (148) is four more than the Ocean Course at Kiawah, which has hosted a major championship and a Ryder Cup and is widely regarded as one of the toughest tests in the world of golf. Conditioning at Oaks is always good. And so is the service and setting.
Resort Course at Westin LaCantera Like other great courses in the area, the Resort Course at Westin LaCantera had a run at hosting the Valero Texas Open (1995—2009). I’m always a fan of Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish designs, and this one doesn’t disappoint. Like the neighboring Palmer Course, there won’t be many flat lies, but there will be plenty of spots for great golf pictures. I consider this course fun, and after playing it once, you’ll want to go back.

Especially the ending, as you work your way down a tiered fairway and to a well-protected green. The views are so good they’re distracting, as you’ll get various vantage points of the Texas Hill Country.
Canyons course at TPC San Antonio Canyons course at TPC San Antonio is a rare case in which the Pete Dye design is the more user-friendly option on property. Host of the Champion’s Tour’s AT&T Championship, fairways are wider than big brother, Oaks course, and you’ll have a much easier time playing to your handicap.
Old Brack at Brackenridge Park Old Brack, or, Brackenridge Park, is one of my favorite municipal golf courses in the country and is always on my list of best value. (Green fees range from $45—$70.) A true gem, this original A.W. Tillinghast design (1915) has been restored and renovated to most of the great architect’s original intent. More of the history of the course and golf in Texas can be found at the Texas Golf Hall of Fame, which is located on site. Enjoy the walk, and because of the angles and elevated greens, the course will play a little longer than what’s listed not he scorecard.

Paddling the River Walk The San Antonio River has always been the life source of the city with original settlers building the historic missions on the banks of the river. Today, the eight-mile section of the river, which extends south of downtown from Lone Star Boulevard to Mission Espada, is called the Mission Reach. For the past few years, the city has focused its efforts in restoring the Mission Reach into a beautiful natural park full of life. One of the activities that can be enjoyed in the mission reach is kayaking, there are only three areas of the river walk where kayaking is allowed:

Kayaking through this historic area offers views of unique neighborhoods such as King William, and the artsy area around Blue Star Arts Complex. Paddle your way around our water chutes and features for some hearty exercise and view our native wildlife in a tranquil setting. Covered pavilions and picnic areas are available for a quick snack and drink stop. There are many ways to enjoy, experience and get around on our river. Whether biking, hiking or paddling - there is something for the whole family to enjoy for a great day out on The San Antonio River.

It’s Spring! And what better way to celebrate the arrival of such a glorious season of blooming flowers and bright sunshine than to give your child the opportunity to spend time playing and learning (we won’t tell if you don’t) while having fun at places so wonderful the adults will enjoy themselves too! The San Antonio Aquarium is open 365 days a year in Leon Valley, just north of the River Walk. Newly opened in 2014, this familyfriendly interactive aquarium boasts that children can touch and feed almost every single animal in there! Besides marine life to interact with there are several species of birds, reptiles and amphibians as well as animatronic dinosaurs! CEO Alui Cleaver says “the aquarium was built with a ten-year old in mind and we feel that interaction is the way to teach young minds.” The facility offers the I-Guana Jump Bounce House, a bounce house of soft play items; Sharky’s Village, an imaginary play area for younger children and Jurassic Jungle, a largerthan-life dinosaur area. Beyond the multiple learning and play areas are opportunities for children to interact directly with the staff and animals in snorkeling with stingrays, octopus encounters, sleeping with sharks (overnight stays next to the aquarium windows, not in the tank!), mermaid experiences and a day in the life of the aquarium crew. Sprintime Kid-Friendly Fun continued and most of all, get in touch with the world of horticology. Very little ones, special needs, home-schooled and all children are welcomed and catered for with unique programs specifically designed with them in mind. Current March programming includes the Children’s Vegetable Garden where children ages 8-13 learn how to grow and tend their own garden with a chance to earn a certificate at completion. The Rainforest Adventure Maze is another activity launching in March where an interactive adventure awaits as the participants go on an exploratory and educational course delving into each of the four levels of the maze as they answer questions about the rainforest and its structure. Your guide to spotting spring’s wildflowers
In the Lone Star state, spring announces itself with a vivid display of wildflowers that spray roadsides and blanket wide open fields with color. As winter gives way to sunnier days and warmer temperatures, wildflower-watching and picture-taking become quintessential springtime activities. Do yourself a favor and put on those boots, grab your camera or smart phone cause this spring promises to be wild thanks to the ample rainfall throughout Central Texas during the past fall and winter months. Below are some of the best spots around to take in the blooms. Hill Country Hotspots The Hill Country explodes with breathtaking blossoms. Located less than 70 miles from the San Antonio River Walk, Wildseed Farms boasts more than 200 acres of wildflower fields and a Market Center where a variety of native wildflower seed mixes ranging in size from a quarter-pound ($9.95) to one pound ($29.50) are for sale. As one of the nation’s largest working wildflower farms, Wildseed Farms invites visitors to gaze at glorious displays of wildflowers and grab some seeds to take a piece of Texas home with them seven days a week. The Willow City Loop, the idyllic Hill Country area 90 miles from the River Walk, is considered one of the prime spring wildflower viewing areas––this scenic 13-mile road offers stunning sights of meadows and valleys cloaked in colorful blooms. Nearby State Parks Texas is home to more than 5,000 species of wildflowers and more than 90 Texas State Parks offer some of the best and safest places to view them, says Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Rob McCorkle. About 75 miles away, Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site in Stonewall is famous for its spring blooms such as Indian paintbrush and bluebonnets brimming from large, open fields. The drives leading toward Enchanted Rock Natural State Area (87 miles away) and Inks lake State Park (107 miles away) also teem with wildflowers. McCorkle says other reliable state parks for viewing abundant wildflower crops is Goliad State Park which bursts with beautiful blooms just 90 miles away from the River Walk, or a bit further (169 miles from the River Walk) is Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site which offers a diverse display of wildflowers among 293 acres of natural riverside beauty.

With fall and winter rains providing the essential jumpstart, visitors can look forward to popular showstoppers all spring long, from mid-March and April, and well into the summer months. “This season should be better than the last two or three years because we had more rain this past fall and winter,” says Dr. Mark Simmons, director of the Wildflower Center’s Ecosystem Design Group. Book it to Burnet Officially recognized by the Texas legislature as the “Bluebonnet Capital of Texas,” Burnet celebrates the blooming of the wildflowers 100 miles away from the River Walk with its 32nd annual Burnet Bluebonnet Festival bluebonnetfestival. org slated for April 10-12. Known as one of the best places in Texas for viewing wildflowers, this event has blossomed into one of the most successful small town festivals, now drawing more than 30,000 each year. Make the most of the bluebonnets when in Burnet by taking the less-than-20-mile drive toward Canyon of the Eagles, another stellar spot for wildflower viewing.
continued Follow the Wildflower Trails If you’re after spectacular wildflower displays, your best bet is to get out of the city and onto the smaller country back roads. Various self-guided wildflower trails spaghetti across the state, fringing roadsides with reds, whites, blues (and yellows, purples and pinks).
