The Official Magazine of the River Walk
Publisher Louis Doucette Louis@travelingblender.com Editor Paula Schechter editor@paseodelrio.com Business Manager Vicki Schroder Vicki@travelingblender.com
With literally the flip of a switch the River Walk transforms from what is already a uniquely beautiful park to a magical wonderland for the holidays. Perhaps good lighting really is everything.
Contributing Writers Ron Aaron Eisenberg Bob McCullough Carole Miller Eileen Pace Susan Yerkes
Each year, once the holiday lights are turned-on the day after Thanksgiving, the River Walk takes on a different personality. It somehow feels, transformed, ethereal, and even wintery despite our average December temperature of 50 degrees.
Advertising Sales San Antonio:
It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
Browse through gift shops, enjoy a warm beverage and a sweet treat or indulge in a cocktail and a delicious meal. Or simply stroll along the banks of the river and soak in this magical time of the year. Even Ebenezer Scrooge would have a hard time being grumpy on the River Walk. Several events organized by Paseo del Rio Association and sponsored by Ford contribute to the holiday spirit. Look for a complete list of events on page 19. From the River Walk family to you, happy holidays!

RIO Magazine
by Bob McCullough
www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com
On six special nights in December, the San Antonio River literally glows and reflects the warmth of the holiday season. More than 3,000 luminarias—Spanish for “lantern” or “lamp”—spaced 4 feet apart at the river’s edge look like footlights on a giant, undulating stage. Add a crisp temperature, perhaps a touch of mist and thousands of twinkling lights cascading downward from trees overhanging the water, and this magical, much-photographed scene from countless vantage points becomes a treasured memory of Old San Antonio. Born out of Mexican tradition, luminarias symbolically “light the way” for the Holy Family. Each “lantern” consists of a small candle placed in sand inside a white paper bag. Lighting the candle produces a pleasant glow that’s magnified tremendously when thousands of luminarias glimmer simultaneously. The concept is simple, but the execution required for the Ford Fiesta de las Luminarias on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings (December 4–6, 11–13 and 18–20) is akin to a multi-faceted military operation. The Paseo del Rio Association, which has coordinated the fiesta since the early 1970s, literally recruits a “light brigade” of volunteers to make the spectacle happen. The operation begins on Thursday when two barges laden with paper bags and sand head for Casa Rio Restaurant. There, staffers from Casa Rio, The Original Mexican Restaurant and other volunteers form an assembly line, unfolding each bag and then inserting a cup of sand into each. The barges rendezvous again at Casa Rio on Friday evening at dusk where approximately 40 additional volunteers including Boy Scouts and members of youth organizations as well as church groups add a candle to each bag of sand and carefully place the luminarias along the Paseo del Rio. One barge heads one direction; the other proceeds the opposite direction. All in all, it takes about two hours to position and light all the luminarias. However, if the weather forecast calls for rain, the Paseo del Rio Association must scrub the mission to avert a soggy mess. Then on late Sundays or early Mondays, crews from the City of San Antonio and Centro San Antonio return to collect the extinguished luminarias and properly dispose of what remains. This year’s Ford Fiesta de las Luminarias will stretch approximately 3 miles along the River Bend, heart of the River Walk, and also extend eastward toward Rivercenter Mall and the San Antonio Convention Center lagoon. It will attract throngs of visitors and residents, but with lights galore and floating entertainment such as the Ford Holiday Boat Caroling, there’ll be plenty of reasons to keep moving and take it all in. After experiencing and photographing the Paseo del Rio’s holiday splendor, it’s a good idea to head indoors to a River Walk restaurant or night spot for dinner or hot chocolate or cappuccino or an after-dinner libation. The evening’s celebration just wouldn’t be complete without food or drink. Chances are the Ford Fiesta de las Luminarias will leave participants with a warm glow inside that hopefully grows brighter and brighter and leads to a season filled with holiday delights aplenty. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com RIO Magazine 13

Had Boudro’s been serving Blackened Prime Rib, fresh Guacamole made tableside and Prickly Pear Margaritas back in 1836, the King of the Wild Frontier would have left Tennessee sooner. Loved by locals and travelers, Boudro’s is a mecca for great food on the River Walk. Frommers says ”Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Dine riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

Q: A:
How do you tell if someone is from Texas? Just give them a few minutes and they will tell you.
Texans are proud of their state, heritage and history and for good reason.
Interesting facts about Texas H The Heisman Trophy is named after John William Heisman, who was the first full time coach and athletic Director at Rice University in Houston, Texas. H Sam Houston, one of the most famous Texans, was born in Virginia and served as the governor of Tennessee before coming to Texas. After Texas won its’ independence from Mexico, he served as the first President of the Republic of Texas. Later, he served as a Senator from the State of Texas after annexation by the United States of America. He ended his political career as the Governor of the State of Texas. H The first suspension bridge in the United States was the Waco Bridge. It was built in 1870 and is still in use today as a pedestrian bridge over the Brazos River. H Texas is currently 261,797 square miles in size. This represents 7.4% of the nation’s total area. This is down from the original size, of the Republic of Texas, of 389,166 square miles. The original 13 colonies were only about 430,000 square miles. H Texas’ largest county is Brewster County which encompasses 6,208 miles. This is larger than the states of Rhode Island, Delaware and Connecticut and slightly smaller than the state of Hawaii.

Downtown
Local Holiday Traditions By Susan Yerkes
When it comes to local holiday traditions, there’s simply no place like San Antonio. Starting in December, downtown becomes an winter wonderland, minus the snow. While much of the country shivers under a blanket of cold, the Alamo City’s warm climate brings thousands of visitors to enjoy a bountiful feast of festivity, featuring colorfully diverse traditions and cultures. Throughout December, The sounds of the holidays enhance the River Walk experience, too. Each night from December 2nd through the 20th, river barges carrying musicians from more than 185 schools, churches and choral groups ply the half mile downtown stretch of the river, spreading cheer as they go. December 4th and 5th, 6 to 9pm, the “real” Santa Claus will visit the River Walk to pose for free family photo-ops. Tamales, from succulent meat and vegetable varieties to sweet dessert tamales (even chocolate ones!) are a favorite traditional food for the holidays in San Antonio. You’ll find them on the menus of many River Walk establishments. There’s a special treat in store December 5th, when the Pearl complex on the River Walk’s Museum Reach, home of the San Antonio branch of the Culinary Institute of America, holds its annual free “Tamales!” festival. More than 40 vendors will be on hand with every kind of tamale imaginable, as well as other traditional holiday foods, from churros (a deepfried, sugary Mexican pastry) to rich Mexican hot chocolate. The River Walk is also home to one of the nation’s most picturesque Chanukah celebrations December 13th marks the 17th annual Chanukah on the River!, sponsored by Chabad Lubavitch of South Texas’ Center for Jewish Life and Learning, along with community synagogues and Jewish organizations. You don’t have to be Jewish to love this festive occasion. This year, December 13th is the eighth and final night of the Jewish Festival of Lights which celebrates the victory of a small, outnumbered band of Maccabees over Greeks who occupied the Holy Land in the 2nd Century B.C., and the liberation of the Temple, where an eight-branched menorah miraculously burned for eight nights. The family fun kicks-off with a Chanukah Wonderland in the riverside La Villita area, with kosher food, a Dreidel Moonbounce, raffles, menorah making, and face-painting. Menorah River Cruises depart from the Arneson River Theater from 3 to 4 p.m. followed by a free concert by the renowned American-Israeli rock band Mosav and a traditional menorah-lighting ceremony from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. A cherished Christian tradition takes place the following Sunday, December 20th. Hundreds of San Antonians and visitors gather for the annual La Gran 32
RIO Magazine
Posada, a re-enactment of the Biblical account of Joseph and Mary’s search for lodgings in Bethlehem. The procession begins at 6 p.m. at Milam Park and concludes at San Fernando Cathedral, the historic 18th entry cathedral at the center of the city. Linger in front of the cathedral afterwards for the amazing free sound-and-light show “San Antonio: The Saga,” projected directly on the cathedral’s majestic façade at 9:30 and 10 p.m. (You can also see “The Saga”at 9, 9:30 and 10 p.m. every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday night at 9, 9:30 and 10 p.m. throughout the holidays, except for December 11th). If you’re in town for the New Year, you’re in for another special treat—New Year’s Eve is one of the liveliest nights around. A recent travel & leisure magazine poll ranked San Antonio as one of the top New Year’s destinations in the nation. Celebrate San Antonio, a massive free downtown festival and fireworks extravaganza, draws over 200,000 people downtown each year. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com
And this year there’s more excitement on the River Walk—the big annual Pep Rally for the January 2nd Valero Alamo Bowl football game that afternoon. The event brings high school and college bands, cheerleaders and head coaches to the Arneson River Theater for a rousing show of spirit, with players from both teams on river barges in front of the outdoor stage. Downtown hotels and restaurants offer a host of traditional New Year’s Eve options, from elaborate parties to quiet suppers. Whatever you choose, make sure to make your way outside in time to mingle with the crowds that fill the downtown streets for Celebrate San Antonio. Check out the free entertainment and help welcome the New Year with the massive fireworks display over HemisFair Park’s Tower of the Americas.

The Palm Philosophy: Words to Dine By
The Palm, a New York institution since 1926, became an instant Texas tradition since opening its doors in San Antonio, in 2001. And how could it not, when serving USDA Prime Steaks, fresh, succulent Nova Scotia Lobster, and heritage Italian dishes. The Palm is widely considered to be one of our cities finest Steak Houses, it is a must for visitors and locals alike. Located on Houston Street in the heart of downtown, across the street from the historic Majestic Theater, the Palm’s philosophy is simple: treat guests like family, serve great food, and always exceed expectations. Still owned and operated by members of the Bozzi and Ganzi families, The Palm continues to serve as a second home for countless patrons, thanks to the exceptional standard of hospitality established by its founders. The tradition of cartoons and caricatures featuring famous faces and local notables that began in New York in 1926 is continued in San Antonio too. Over the years, the tradition of “making the wall” has become a point of pride for customers, with thousands joining the cast of characters that line the Palm walls across the country. The value of the famous caricatures can only be measured by the laughs and memories shared at The Palm. Visiting The Palm bar is a must, where you will be greeted with a warm friendly smile by a wonderful bar staff. Enjoy their signature
house cocktail, “1926 Cocktail” touted as an award winning drink by Wine Enthusiast Magazine, a chilled concoction of Ultimat Vodka, Amaro Nonino Quintessentia, apple juice and hand-squeezed fresh lemon juice. New at The Palm this year is their $26, 3-course Power Lunch featuring filet medallions a la stone, signature side dishes and New York Cheesecake, straight from Juniors of the Bronx. Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11:30-3pm try one the classic selections of Palm Burgers & Fries for $15 or join us at Happy Hour for ½ priced Prime Bites, Sunday-Friday, 5PM – 7PM. The Palm also has Patio dining with live music every Wednesday evening. Join us at the Palm. Reservations are highly recommended, however, walk-ins are welcome. Contact us at 210-226-7256 or visit our website, www. thepalmsa.com. For private dining reservation, contact Melanie Moran at mmoran@thepalm.com.

In Search of The Perfect Gift SEGUIN
By Eileen Pace
When the San Antonio River Walk is all dressed up for the holidays, its thousands of twinkling lights can really get you in the mood for gift giving. Lucky for you, shopping abounds, gifts waiting to be carefully chosen, wrapped and packed for the return trip home to loved ones. And one of the best thing about shopping in San Antonio is that there’s something for everyone and in all price ranges. One of the first stops along the River Walk is Hard Rock Cafe. True collectors know each Hard Rock location gets its own city-themed snow-globe pin during the holidays, and treasure-hunters start looking for them early, because the designs are only made once. In fact, Hard Rock pin collecting is so popular, a recent pin event in San Antonio brought collectors from as far away as Germany. A limited-edition holiday pin for San Antonio shows the river, architecture and colorful cafe umbrellas seen along the River Walk. Hard Rock San Antonio second pin with a fairy design is designed by one of its employees that’s sure to be popular among treasure-hunters. You’ll find great stocking stuffers at the Five and Dime General Store, which stocks plenty of small and large gift items and souvenirs. If the grandkids are hoping for a T-shirt from San Antonio, you’ll find plenty here. Five and Dime also carries an array of whimsical Christmas ornaments during the holidays. If you see the world through an artist’s lens, or simply appreciate finelycrafted artisan merchandise, make a trip to the San Antonio Museum of Art located a few blocks north of downtown. The gift shop features
merchandise from visiting exhibits and their permanent collection.
Items that portray the infusion of Mexican culture in San Antonio represent some of the biggest collections at SAMA – and the most popular. The Latin American collection is heavily focused on folk art. A line from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico called Cielito Lindo features whimsical altars bedazzled with virgens and santos. You’ll also find beautiful sterling silver artisan jewelry from William Spratling, an architect who in the 1920s revived the silver smithing industry in Taxco, Mexico. Cuff links, bracelets, women’s cuffs and tabletop accessories are offered. UNESCO designation for the San Antonio Missions inspired a line of sterling silver pendants for each mission designed by San Antonio’s own Sadovsky Jewelers. SAMA carries a line of laser-cut pendants of the city grid. A tiny map of the center of downtown, the pendant features the San Antonio River running through it.
Located downtown in a sunny room on the first floor of a former 1907 elementary school, artist Debra Benditz welcomes visitors by appointment. Awash with light from tall, north-facing windows, the studio features a cozy showroom area where potential clients can browse samples of Bendtiz’ work and take a mini-tour of her latest projects.

Sights &Sounds of the Season
The sights and sounds of the holidays resound this holiday season; from children’s choirs to professional ballet, the city is filled with the joy and spirit that make the holidays feel, well, like a holiday! By Ron Aaron Eisenberg
The Children’s Chorus of San Antonio’s perform Frost & Fire in the Tobin Center’s H-E-B Performance Hall, December 6. The program is CCSA’s celebration of the arrival of winter bringing together its Training, Advanced, and Neighborhood ensembles on stage at the Tobin. In all, some 180 singers from age 8 to 22 will perform. The concert will include works by Hassler, Elgar, Gwyneth Walker, Sarah Quartel, and Vince Guaraldi (A Charlie Brown Christmas). The concert will also cover all of the seasonal highlights. Guest conductor is Emily Ellsworth (Anima, Chicago). Prices start at just $8. childrenschorussa. org A one-of-a-kind performance takes place December 12 in the Empire Theater when Youth Orchestras San Antonio, YOSA, will send 20 string players to back up Deer Vibes in an album release for the experimental orchestral indie rock band. YOSA Musical Director Troy Peters will conduct with YOSA alumnus Darian Thomas doing orchestrations for this show. Michael Carrillo is lead singer and songwriter for Deer Vibes, around whom the whole project revolves. Tickets sold on tickmaster.com. where? The San Antonio Symphony concert December 19 & 21 will invite adults and children to sing along during the Symphony’s holiday concert. Conductor Akiko Fujimoto will lead the musicians in songs from Disney’s Frozen to tunes from White Christmas. It will take place in the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.
A family favorite also comes to the Tobin beginning December 21 through the 24th. The beloved TV classic RUDOLPH THE REDNOSED REINDEER is on stage with all of the favorite characters from the TV special. It’s an adventure that teaches us that what makes you different can be what makes you special. The musical show is based on the animated television special “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Go to TobinCenter.org The Nutcracker Ballet is always a holiday highlight. This year Ballet San Antonio, the famed Moscow Ballet and the Mejia Ballet International all will present different performances of the Nutcracker: December 4-13 at the Tobin Center, December 18 – 21 at Lila Cockrell Theater and December 27 – 28 at the Majestic Theater. Mannheim Steamroller’s annual jingle-bell filled tour comes to the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, TX, for one date only on December 26. A new production by the Trans Siberian Orchestra will play the AT&T Center on December 19. The story is about a runaway girl who takes refuge in an abandoned theater on Christmas Eve, and meets the Ghosts of Christmas, and learning her own worth in the meantime. This was the band’s first made-for-television film back in 1999, and now they are bringing it on tour as a live concert, for the very first time!

INSIDERS EXCLUSIVE:
Santa’s Favorite Hang-Outs in SA By Carole Miller
One of the Alamo City’s best-kept secrets is that St. Nicholas Claus spends most of his time in San Antonio. He has been spending his summers here for decades but, with the advent of new technology, he is now able to do most of his work by telecommuting to the North Pole. Plus, his reindeer prefer the warmer climate for their year-round training. While attending holiday pool parties and Christmas shopping wearing shorts, sometimes Santa feels a little homesick for snow and nostalgic for his old buddy Jack Frost. In a recent, exclusive interview with Rio Magazine, Santa revealed his top three favorite places around San Antonio for winter wonderland adventures. During the dog days of December, Santa loves to be out shreddin’ the gnar at Texas Ski Ranch Snow Park. The 70-acre action sports complex, the new snow park is Nick’s favorite place to go when he gets a hankerin’ to do some snow skiing, boarding or tubing. They offer lessons for Santa’s beginner friends as well as a mini pipe, rollers and banked turns for experts like Santa who like to tear it up. The Texas Snow Park hill is made of an artificial turf that is wet down and made rideable every day. It is not like actual snow—its better because it’s made in Texas. This special Lone Star concoction is designed for progression with the intention to provide the best ride experience. The hill is split in different sections, each providing a unique environment for maximum grinding, kicking and stomping. Scheduling a lesson is not required. If you have previous experience and just want some practice you can purchase a pass for anything from a couple of hours to a couple of days. And all equipment is available for rental so Santa doesn’t have to carry skis on his sleigh (or through any reindeer security checkpoints). Located in New Braunfels, it’s about a 45-minutes sleigh ride from downtown San Antonio. www.texasskiranch.com / (830) 627-2843. Another little-known fact about jolly ol’ St. Nicholas is he is quite an accomplished figure skater. And since none of the lakes around San Antonio freeze over until. . . well. . . you know. . . the jolly one likes to work on his triple “sowcow” at his favorite outdoor skating rink, Eisbahn (“ice rink” in German). He and his entire extended elf family just love ice skating on real ice in the Fredericksburg Markplatz in the scenic Texas Hill Country. Eisbahn uses special refrigeration units to keep the ice frozen even when the weather is warm outside. And with an all-day pass (including skates) for only $10, it doesn’t cost too much cold cash for an entire elf entourage. Eisbahn is sponsored by Heritage School of Fredericksburg and the volunteer participation by Heritage School families makes it possible for Eisbahn to continue to donate a portion of the proceeds to local non-profit organizations. And Santa always appreciates the spirit of giving, of course. Eisbahn is open daily all winter long. It is located about an hour’s glide from downtown San Antonio in Fredericksburg. www.skateinfred.com. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com RIO Magazine 47

During his recent exclusive, tell-all with Rio Magazine, Santa also confessed he is an expert spelunker and loves to visit Natural Bridge Caverns. “All the activity there reminds me of the North Pole and really puts me in the ho-ho-holiday spirit,” commented Claus. Christmas at the Caverns includes many special events. Caroling in the Caverns is a breathtaking, live performance of beautiful carols in the underground chambers. The Hidden Passages Tour and Journey to Bethlehem Show brings the nativity story to life inside the awe-inspiring hidden passages. Go on a fun search for Santa’s lost reindeer in the the AMAZEn’ Reindeer Roundup maze. Take a Country Christmas Hayride under the stars complete with s’mores and hot chocolate by the campfire. Tackle the 4-story obstacle course Canopy Challenge (or the kidsized challenge for kids as well as Santa’s little helpers). Or stroll through Christmas Village, featuring a musical light show, shopping, refreshments and pause for a family photo in front of the 30-foot Christmas tree. Show and attraction availability is limited. Advance online ticket purchase is strongly recommended. Natural Bridge Caverns is located about 35 minutes north of San Antonio, as the reindeer flies. Take I-35 North to the FM3009 exit and follow the signs to Natural Bridge Caverns (located at 26495 Natural Bridge Caverns Road, San Antonio 78266). Visit www.naturalbridgecaverns. com for more information and advance ticket purchase or call (210)651-6101.
