Publisher Louis Doucette Louis@travelingblender.com

Welcome to San Antonio! We hope you have come at a time when we are enjoying some rather cool weather for this time of year; otherwise, enjoy some of our Texas sun! San Antonio is a fun and unique city and full of culture and diversity. The San Antonio River Walk consists of miles of shopping, bars and restaurants. No two restaurants are the same on the San Antonio River Walk. One can actually go on a taste tour of Europe here. Walk under the tree shaded sidewalks and make a few stops along the way. Check out the UK at MadDogs, Germany at BierGarten, take a trip to Italy at Zocca, sip on sangria and Spanish fare at Las Ramblas, and if you are looking for a romantic getaway, head to Bella and taste the flavors of the Mediterranean. Maybe you are thinking you want some good ole’ Texas BBQ? We have you covered. San Antonio and the surrounding area plays home to some of the best brisket, sausage, ribs and beans around! And like the restaurants on the River Walk, no two BBQ joints are the same. There is something about a hot Texas day and BBQ that just goes together. From a classic BBQ joint like The County Line, to award winning BBQ at Two Brothers in San Antonio, to Kreuz Market; where the meat is so good it does not need sauce, to Long Tieng, with Asian infused BBQ. After all that eating, walk it off with a laid back trip to some museums. The San Antonio Museum of Art, known as SAMA to us locals, offers eye candy not only inside but also outside. It is situated on the San Antonio River Walk area known as the Museum Reach. Go explore the Briscoe Museum, one of the newest museums in San Antonio. Also, don’t forget the Witte, which is a favorite of kiddos, as well as The McNay and Blue Star. Not only are these museums beautiful, they are informative and, of course, air conditioned! Want to live like a local? Get some fresh produce at the Farmers Market’s around town. I personally love the Farmer’s Market at the Pearl on the weekend. You can buy everything from lavender soap to veggies, while snacking on items like chicken and waffles. Plus it is inspiring to see all the community support! Everyone is friendly, there are a lot of dogs, and you are bound to see some cute pups or unusual breeds. Downtown, check out La Villita and Market Square for some more shopping. Whether it’s food or fun you are looking for, San Antonio has you covered! Stay Cool!

Touring the World ON THE RIVER WALK BY: LEANDRA HERNANDEZ

San Antonio is fast becoming a foodie’s paradise with a plethora of restaurants and bars from which to choose from- east to west and north to south. Our city has been recognized for our unique cuisine, interesting drinks, trained chefs and extraordinary River Walk atmosphere.

You won’t have to go far to see men and women in kilts, get some “good English fare and a pint of lager” by stepping into a little slice of the UK at MadDog’s authentic British Pub on the River Walk. Choose to sit on the patio amongst the hustle and bustle of the River Walk crowd or step into a large covered area with an array of tables and alcoves all themed in ‘cool Britannia’. ‘God save the Queen’ and your palate by partaking in typical British “grub” of fish n’ chips, steak and ale pie, homemade beef pasties, cottage pie and bangers and mash. If all things British don’t suit your mood, other choices on the menu, aptly named of course, include The Big Ben Rib eye sandwich, The Beefeater Burger, Cornish Crab Cakes, the Prime Minister’s Special and other dishes including seafood, salads, veggie dishes and more which all in all, has something for everyone to enjoy. Get a Union Jack Margarita and ‘get on down’ in their seven nights a week entertainment program, featuring karaoke, dj’s, bands and more. The party starts and ends here.

Start your tour and say Viva! at Las Ramblas, located in Hotel Contessa where the restaurant, named for the historic tree-lined street in Barcelona, Spain boasts that they are the ‘only Spanish restaurant on the River Walk’. Priding themselves on their menu boasting thirtyfive hot and cold tapas, paella, cured meats, seafood and other Spanish delicacies, Las Ramblas also incorporates a Texas twist by offering some dishes that salute Texan’s love for burgers and ribs by adding a Spanish flair. “I spent considerable research and time creating traditional Spanish dishes with the Lone Star State in mind.” says Executive Chef Jordan Mackey. Enjoy fruity Sangria in their beautiful tiled and brightly-lit stone dining room directly opening onto an umbrella-covered patio on the River Walk and pretend you’re only seconds away from the sights and sounds of Spain.

Markets

“It is a very unique San Antonio experience,” says Jenkins. “Historic Market Square is something that preserves the history of San Antonio and presents it in a modern form. People can come shop, eat and be part of the cultural activities here.” La Villita www.lavillita.com Within the “little village” known as La Villita, you will discover a piece of San Antonio’s history. Located on the south bend of the San Antonio River, La Villita Historic Arts Village has deep roots––the site was originally an encampment for the area’s native people in the 1700’s, and by 1939 the area was preserved as a Historic Arts Village.

Whether you are seeking the freshest produce available, authentic clothing from Mexico or inspiring works produced by local artists, San Antonio’s downtown markets are brimming with treasures. Recently listed among America’s 25 best cities for shopping by Forbes, San Antonio is a bargain-hunter’s dream. But folded inside San Antonio’s downtown markets is where you will witness the city’s culture and soul come to life. Head to one of these three must-experience markets to discover an array of hidden gems. Historic Market Square www.sanantonio. gov/marketsquare Historic Market Square dates back to the 1800’s, but you will still find Mexican culture thriving in this vibrant market bursting with authentic music, food and shopping. “I like to refer to Historic Market Square as physically west of downtown with a heart that’s definitely south of the border,” says Mark Jenkins, manager. “You can indulge yourself in the traditional sights and sounds of Mexico without ever leaving downtown San Antonio.” Nearly 100 shops are speckled throughout these historic buildings which date back to 1892, when the area was known as Presidio Square, where vendors sell a diverse array of authentic Mexican items including jewelry,

www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

pottery and handmade clothing. Historic Market Square is also known for its festive events that are always free and open to the public––everything from live entertainment, folkloric dancers and cultural activities to mariachi bands, Tejano music and guitarists can be found each weekend. The Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair and Fiesta de los Reyes, the largest free fiesta event in the city, are among the annual events that always draw a crowd. “We pride ourselves on being family oriented––every weekend you can find live folkloric dancers, music and food vendors, and all of the entertainment in Market Square is always free,” says Jenkins. “We also have a very nice working artist program featuring artists who actually produce the art themselves––on site painters, jewelry makers, candle makers, sculptures.” During the summer, the shops at Historic Market Square are open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Work up an appetite shopping and then refuel at one of the two landmark restaurants located in Historic Market Square: Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery or La Margarita Restaurant and Oyster Bar. Spend the first Saturday of each month at Historic Market Square to enjoy Primer Sabado festivities that take place from noon to 6 p.m.

Today you will find an amalgam of galleries and shops contained in this cluster of buildings in the heart of downtown San Antonio. Here local and regional artists showcase their works spanning oil paintings, sculptures, water-colors, metal art, rock art, textiles, copper wares, pottery, jewelry, stained glass and folk art. “Visitors may watch craftsmen at their work such as candlemakers, jewelers, potters and more,” says Blanche Mendoza, facilities operations coordinator. “La Villita has seven art galleries, boutiques, and specialty shops from clothing, jewelry, Mexican folk art, textiles, oil and watercolor paintings.” While the one-of-a-kind, handcrafted items on offer are a big draw to La Villita Historic Arts Village, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, visitors will also find numerous festivities taking place year round. La Villita serves as the popular site for myriad special events including A Night in Old San Antonio (NIOSA), International Accordion Festival, Fiesta Noche del Rio, Dia de los Muertos and the San Antonio Coffee Festival. “La Villita has 27 arts and crafts shops and four restaurants and includes five outdoor venues for rent to the public for special occasions,” says Mendoza. Hungry shoppers can try the made-fromscratch Central and Southern Mexican specialties served at Guadalajara Grill; enjoy

Marvelous Markets: continued the simple elegance and continental cuisine at Fig Tree Restaurant; duck into La Villita Cafe for sandwiches and salads, or gather with friends over eclectic appetizers and prime steaks at Little Rhein Steak House. Pearl Farmers Market www.atpearl.com Sitting in front the historic Brewhouse situated along the banks of the San Antonio River, Pearl Farmers Market transforms into a vibrant culinary gathering place bringing the freshest seasonal produce and farm-fresh goods to the heart of the city each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This producers-only farmers market brings 40 local vendors located within the 150 mile radius of San Antonio along with their fresh, seasonal products that they either planted, raised or harvested themselves every Saturday–– rain or shine. This free event supports local farmers while providing a centralized spot for locals and visitors to bring home fresh, seasonal ingredients to cook, eat and enjoy with their family and friends. But they’ll find more than just fruits and veggies at Pearl Farmers Market. Also on offer: locally-raised chicken, lamb, beef, pork and goat; eggs from happy hens; local olive oils and lavender products; bakeries; chocolatiers and local cheese makers who produce goat cheeses like feta and chèvre and dairy favorites such as fresh mozzarella and cheddar. “Pearl Farmers Market has become a platform for connecting local farmers with their consumers,” says Tatum Evans, manager of the Pearl Farmers Market. “We have farmers from Moulton, Odom, Pleasanton and Seguin––all around San Antonio. I think people in general are becoming more food conscious––where it comes from where it is grown. There was a need to have a place to get local produce, meats, eggs and regional artisanal foods.” For the past five years, Pearl Farmers Market has become the go-to spot for those seeking seasonal farm-fresh produce, meats, eggs and local products. Whatever is growing at the time is what’s on offer Pearl Farmers Market––in early summer, look out for vine-ripe tomatoes, peppers, blackberries, peaches, zucchini, summer squash, eggplant and herbs. When hunger strikes, indulge in readily available deliciousness like breakfast crepes and pork belly sandwiches, or tacos washed down with a cold beer or refreshing sangria from the Culinary Institute of America’s on-site outdoor kitchen. “It is really a fun way to spend a Saturday,” says Evans. “Since it is at the Brewery, you’ll find shopping, live music and restaurants right on the river. Families come out with their strollers and their dogs, grab a cup of coffee and fill their bags. It is really fun, has a great energy, and it is all surrounding fresh food.”

AZTEC ON THE RIO

by M. Nicole

Synonymous with good times is live music, and the Aztec Theater and Lounge offers the best of both on the San Antonio River Walk. Originally a movie theatre, the Aztec has been a River Walk icon since it was built in 1926. One of the most elaborate theaters of its time, the Aztec’s Meso-American architecture and combination of reproduced authentic columns, reliefs, artifacts and modern details spill into all aspects of the venue—from the majestic lobby and mezzanine, to the famous theatre and balcony. Throughout the decades, the Aztec was home to countless movie premieres and events, but succumbed to neglect and decay in the earlier 1980’s. By 1984, the theater was closed, and seemed destined for demotion. Luckily, the San Antonio Conservation Society came to the rescue in 1988, and by 1992 had successfully lobbied to have it listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located in the heart of downtown at the corner of Commerce St. and St. Mary’s St., the Aztec Theatre is one of the Alamo City’s most cherished architectural and historical landmarks. A must-see destination for visitors and locals alike, the Aztec is now San Antonio’s premier multi-use entertainment venue, special events space, performing arts center, live music venue, retail space and more! In September of 2013, PHH Entertainment Ventures LLC signed a long-term lease to turn the Aztec into a multi-purpose 32 RIO Magazine

entertainment and event facility. Inside the theatre, the group constructed a tiered platform structure and imported a stateof-the-art sound system from Germany to create San Antonio’s ultimate concert experience. “On the concert side, we saw that San Antonio was lacking a mid-sized music venue that would regularly book nationally touring acts,” explained Cliff Puchalski, Director of Public Relations, Media Services. “With the Aztec holding around 1,800 people, we have been able to book some bands have traditionally passed San Antonio by because the city hasn’t had a venue that held 1,000 - 2,000.” Aztec is currently booking acts in a wide variety of music genres from rock, country, blues and beyond. “Our goal for the Aztec is to not only be a destination for the folks in south Texas; we also want the artists themselves to love playing here and want to come back,” said Puchalski. “We removed the seating on the theatre floor and replaced it with a tiered riser system that really allows you to get up close and personal with the performers.” On Friday and Saturday nights (as well as before and after all concerts), the Aztec’s lobby and mezzanine area is transformed into Aztec Lounge. The size and grandeur of the theater are unmatched by any other venue in town. The ground floor reaches

two stories high and the mezzanine wraps around the lounge, overlooking the lower level and dance floor. The Aztec Lounge has four bars total, two in the theatre and two on the mezzanine level. To set the mood, DJs spin the hottest Top 40 hits and an array of electronic dance music that includes hiphop, dubstep and mash-ups. From 1926 when it was a movie theater and showed the biggest blockbusters of the day, to its re-birth as a multi-purpose music venue that now plays host to some of the biggest names in music, the Aztec has an amazing story to tell. “You really get the feeling the city of San Antonio appreciates that the theatre is open again, and that there is a new option -with a storied past- for entertainment on the river walk,” explained Puchalski. “We are excited that we’re part of writing the next chapter for the venue, and really cannot wait to see what the future has in store for this great theatre.” For a list of upcoming concerts and events, visit theaztectheatre.com . Space for corporate events, birthday parties, graduations or other private parties is available. For more information, call Kim Circeo, Director of Private Events at 210.812.4355 ext. 1007.

Museum hopping is a great way to spend your day in or near Downtown San Antonio. A few are downtown centro and others are nearby off Broadway. Most of them are located in buildings emanating with history. For a $15 barge taxi pass (good for 24 hours), you can cruise the River, experience the “dam drop” and wind up at the San Antonio Museum of Art (200 West Jones street), and understand why it is one of the best museums in the country. Spend a few hours in art heaven (it’s free on Tuesdays after 4 pm) and enjoy not only the inspiring exhibits but the original historic Lone Star Brewery building which now houses galleries featuring SEGUIN Latin American, Asian, Egyptian, Roman, Greek and treasured European art. For current expo information: www. samuseum.org. Taxi back down the River to Pearl Complex for a plethora of eatery choices, many manned by the American Institute of Culinary Arts (on site) graduates. Then cruise back downtown to the recently opened Briscoe Western Art Museum, neighboring the Hilton Palacio del Rio on the River (200 E. Market Street). Named for late Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe and his wife, Janie, it is housed in San Antonio’s first public library, a 1930s art deco building later occupied by the Herzberg Circus Museum. Vacant for many years, the Briscoe Campus opened in 2013 including the historic Museum building, Jack Guenther Pavilion and the adjacent McNutt Courtyard and Sculpture Garden on the River covering over an acre of downtown space. The museum features exhibits of American Western art, history and movement with Riverside pavilion. www.briscoemuseum.com Just a few blocks away, 306 E. Houston Street is San Antonio’s Children’s Museum next to the Historic Kress building. Kids Play to Learn and Adults Learn to Play is reflected in the hands-on experiences including Power Ball Hall, the HEB Kids’ Market and a

bubble ranch. Their outreach will be expanded June 1, 2015 when the Do Seum (new name) opens at 2809 Broadway, near the Witte Museum. www.sakids.org Located just up the road on Broadway (3814 Broadway), The Witte, San Antonio’s first museum, opened in 1926, fulfilling a need for cultural, science, history and art education for children. It has since grown to become the most visited museum in San Antonio, catering to kids with the re-opening of the Tree House May 24 as the HEB Body Adventure with hands-on exhibits stressing health, science and welfare. It has also hosted the Human Body exhibit and the Dinosaur exhibit! Free Tuesdays after 4 pm. For current exhibits: www. wittemuseum.org With the Broadway Reach ticket you can visit San Antonio Museum of Art, Briscoe Western Art Museum, Children’s Museum and the Witte plus Breckenridge Park, San Antonio Zoo and Botanical Gardens for $44 which must be used within a sevenday period beginning with the first visit. Via Bus Route 7 (Sightseers Special) connects to all these locations. www.broadwayreach.com The McNay Museum, though a little off the beaten path at 6000 North New Braunfels near the Botanical Gardens, is well worth a visit. The 1926 24-room mansion, which housed more than 700 works of art in 1950, has had several additions, including the Stieren Center for Exhibitions in 2008, which doubled the museum’s space opening to lush sculpture gardens. www.mcnayart.org Also Downtown: Institute of Texan Culture, HemisFair Park; Centro Alameda, Market Square; Buckhorn Saloon (wild animals), 319 E. Houston; Institute of Mexican Culture, HemisFair Park. In nearby neighborhoods: San Antonio Art League Museum, 130 King William; Villa Finale Museum and Gardens 401 King William; Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum, 116 Blue Star off South Alamo.

BBQ

The Texas barbecue tradition is about more than smoke, char and spice rubs. At its heart, it’s about secrets.

By Beth Bond Here in Central Texas, closely guarded techniques and recipes define the most celebrated barbecue joints and set them apart from the rest. We don’t know how these four San Antonio-area favorites do it, but that’s OK. We just want to know what time they open for lunch.

Kreuz Market

Sure, you’ll get a cloth napkin and a real plate and a waiter at this River Walk restaurant, but the tastes are traditional, in part because the meat is slow-smoked over green oak for 18 to 20 hours. “It burns slower and a little smoother and it’s less pungent than oak, mesquite or pecan,” said Scott Ziskovsky of The County Line. “We all have our little secrets.” Naturally, he does not comment further on the matter. The sweet homemade bread served here is not to be missed. In Ziskovsky’s words, “It’s not like regular bread — it’s almost like eating cake.”

After 114 years in business, Kreuz Market still keeps its exact methods classified. The barbecue is so perfectly executed that it doesn’t need sauce. Instead, it’s made with just a rub of salt, black pepper and cayenne in proportions that remain a mystery. “I think it’s more what we don’t do,” owner Keith Schmidt said when asked to explain more than a century of smoke-tinged, sauceless success. For its first 99 years, the simple restaurant served barbecue on butcher paper with sides of pickles, onions and cheese. Today, that’s unchanged but they also added to the lineup beans, German potato salad, cole slaw, green beans and mac and cheese. For Schmidt, it’s a point of pride to serve customers the same order they’ve been getting since, say, 1965. That explains why, as he put it, “We don’t have just regular customers; we have regular families coming for generations.”

Two Bros. BBQ Market

Long Tieng

Classic Texas pit barbecue is the specialty at this spot that’s made a big name for itself since opening only six years ago. Two Bros. serves award-winning brisket, it was named to Texas Monthly’s 50 Best BBQ Joints and “The Today Show” has featured its popular cherry-glazed baby back ribs. How do they get that richly flavorful char? It starts with a secret dry rub, and time spent low-and-slow in the custom-made smoke pits takes it from there.

For a meaty cultural mash-up, try this Northeast San Antonio spot serving Texas-style brisket alongside Asian barbecue and even seafood. “You’re not going to find another place like it in Texas,” co-owner Kongsy Howard said — and she’s right. Where else will you find chopped beef and sausage listed on the menu inches away from egg rolls? Howard, who cooks at Long Tieng and owns the place with her husband, cooks chicken, baby back ribs and pork ribs with “some Asian spices,” she said. “It’s kind of like a secret, to tell you the truth.” Of course.
