Resilience: the ability to recover from setbacks, adapt well to change, and keep going in the face of adversity. What better describes the response of our community coming out of the pandemic? Certainly, each of us, as well as our neighbors, our partners, our families - have all been affected by the pandemic in some way, but the effect it’s had on us is not as important as how we’ve each responded to it. Operationally, Fiesta is no different. We’re bouncing back, as individuals, as organizations, as a community and as Fiesta - VIVA FIESTA!
President’s Welcome I often get asked if we will have a normal Fiesta in 2022, but normal is defined differently now too. My response is that, in general, it may take a few years before Fiesta is considered “normal” again. The staff and volunteers are doing everything we can to ensure that Fiesta 2022 is as safe and as ‘normal’ as possible, and that in itself is demonstrative of just how resilient we are as a community. We have an incredibly rare opportunity to reset, reinvest and reimagine what Fiesta can mean to this community - the largest cultural festival in the country! In that regard, I challenge each of you to visit an event during Fiesta 2022 that you and your family have not visited in the past. If you’re a parade goer, try stopping by Post 76 and visiting the oldest VFW post in Texas. If you love the Taste of New Orleans, check out Market Square and Fiesta de los Reyes. Carnival goers, stop by the Southwest School of Art for their Fiesta Arts Fair - the kids’ll love it! Fiesta has so much to offer our already diverse community, and it gives us such an incredible opportunity to share that diversity with each other across our city. As the first military retiree to become Fiesta Commission President, I want to sincerely thank you for the confidence placed in me in putting us back on a path towards normalcy. I’m not a San Antonio native, but when the military would send me here for training while on active duty, I’d marvel at the sights and sounds of this spectacular event. Prior to retirement, I knew San Antonio was where I wanted to live and I knew Fiesta was something I wanted to be a part of. When I asked how I could get involved in the community and potentially make a difference, the response was a resounding “Join the Fiesta Commission!” And so I did and I’ve treasured every single moment of it. Thank you to the thousands of volunteers, the staff at the Commission, the Executive Committee, the Board of Directors, the Participating Member Organizations, the membership, and the community business and government leaders who work together every year to make Fiesta possible. We may not change the world, but together we may be able to change someone’s world.
Viva Fiesta!

Ricky Williamson Ricky’s inspiration for his poster design titled, RESILIENCE: I love Fiesta San Antonio, and it has been such a huge part of my family's tradition, most of my life, by marching in a band during one of the parades, attending one of the festive events or being a Fiesta Poster artist. Through the years, there are many symbols that have engrained their way into my mind that remind me of Fiesta and our beloved city San Antonio. The background of my poster is a blue Mexican Blanket. This has significance to me, as this was the blanket my mother gave me when I went away to college at BYU IDAHO. On cold nights, it was a warm comforting reminder of my home, my family, and especially, my mother, who raised us with love and a stern chancla that only a Mexican Mom can throw on target every time. God Bless you momma . . . I dedicate this artwork to you! The foreground dancers, of course, are iconic for representing, not only San Antonio, but many of the festivities and events of Fiesta. The beautiful colors of the dresses and elegance of the Folklorico dancers bring back many memories of my youth and attending the various performances during Fiesta and its celebrations. The shape, surrounding the dancers, frames the San Antonio skyline, as well as the river behind them. The shape is based on Mission San Jose's La Ventana De Rosa (The Rose Window), which is one of the most symbolic shapes in our grand city, representing our faith and hope. The window was sculpted in 1775 and is considered one of the finest examples of baroque architecture in North America. And, of course, it rests here in our fair city...San Antonio. The theme of 2022 Fiesta is RESILIENCE. I represented this theme with a beautiful Phoenix Bird rising above the city from the ashes of the previous years, as we faced survival during this worldwide pandemic and together have resiliently risen above its trials with faith, hope and joy.

I utilized many colors of confetti, which to me, represents everything festive and happy about many of our traditions here in San Antonio, but especially our most grand celebration, Fiesta. Finally, the LOGO and font style I made for the wording of Fiesta needed to symbolize our culture and be something that could stand on its own. I wanted it to be more than just a simple font. It needed to stand as a piece of artwork on its own and still beautifully capture the feel of Fiesta in San Antonio. Thank you to the Fiesta® San Antonio Commission for selecting my poster for the 2022 Official Poster. This is truly a privilege to me and my family. Viva Fiesta San Antonio! Mayor’s Greeting Welcome to Fiesta 2022! I am happy to celebrate Fiesta 2022 alongside all San Antonians and visitors! First celebrated in 1891, the Fiesta parade has morphed into an annual festival that unifies residents in celebration of community spirit. Considered one of our most beloved traditions, Fiesta was created to honor the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. This historic commemoration continues to this day and highlights San Antonio’s rich and diverse cultural history. The Party with a Purpose features thousands of volunteers, has an economic impact of more than $340 million, and includes events sponsored by our local nonprofits and military organizations. Funds raised through these events enrich our city throughout the year, helping worthwhile causes ranging from scholarships to mentoring to programs for senior citizens. The philanthropic element of Fiesta is vitally important to our city as it showcases our efforts to make our community and help our neighbors. San Antonio is more ready than ever for the excitement and celebration that Fiesta 2022 will bring. As we gather to embrace all of Fiesta’s well-known traditions, I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy food tastings, musical performances, carnivals, parades, and family events meant for locals and visitors alike. Fiesta is an important part of our city’s fabric and has attracted regional, national, and international attention. Just like the River Walk and the Alamo, so does Fiesta unify us all for a common purpose – that of leading with compassion while having fun. The City of San Antonio is honored to partner with the Fiesta Commission year after year to be a part of one of the most special events of the year.
Viva Fiesta! Viva San Antonio!

Military Commander Welcome Letter Viva Fiesta, Military City, USA! Every year, the citizens of San Antonio and surrounding communities come together to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo and Battle of San Jacinto. From its humble beginning in 1891 when festive horse-drawn carriages circled Alamo Plaza and participants pelted each other with blossoms, today’s Fiesta San Antonio has grown into an 11day celebration of diverse heritage, cultures and traditions. Training has been a central part of the military mission in San Antonio since the community donated 90 acres of land to construct the historic Quadrangle at Fort Sam Houston in 1870. From basic military training, to medical, technical, cyber, and flying training, hundreds of thousands of men and women who wear our nation’s uniform have come through San Antonio on their journey of serving our nation. As we celebrate the 131st birthday of Fiesta, 2022 also marks two significant milestones for Airmen. This year we celebrate the Air Force’s 75th anniversary as an independent military service and Air Education and Training Command’s 80th anniversary of recruiting, training, and educating exceptional Airmen who provide airpower for America anytime, anywhere. Dawna and I are honored to be part of this year’s Fiesta activities and witness the renewed spirit and resiliency of “Military City, USA” during these unprecedented times. On behalf of more than 140,000 active-duty military, government civilians, veterans and their families who call San Antonio home, I would like to thank you for your friendship and unwavering support of our service members in San Antonio and their families, and for making all who serve here a part of this vibrant community. Together we embrace the spirit of Fiesta, bigger and better than ever!
Viva San Antonio! Viva Fiesta!

Together Again BY BOB MCCULLOUGH

WWW.FIESTASANANTONIO.ORG | FIESTA SAN ANTONIO 2022
If Fiesta San Antonio wanted a theme song for 2022, an appropriate selection might be the timeless, heartstrings-tugging, country-western tune “Together Again.”
“My tears have stopped falling,” the upbeat lyrics proclaim. “The long, lonely nights…are now at an end.” That’s surely how scores of Fiesta-aficionados must feel after the pandemic forced cancellation of the city-wide celebration in 2020 and resulted in a scaled-down version in June 2021. But traditional Fiesta in almost all its fun and frivolity is back for a 11-day run, March 31 through April 10. And the president of the Fiesta Commission, which coordinates and oversees the festivities, couldn’t be happier because of Fiesta’s critical role in the community. “Fiesta is all about supporting non-profits in our city,” says U. S. Army COL (Ret) Jon Fristoe. “It’s a party with a purpose – more than 100 events that promote the art, heritage, culture and spirit of San Antonio. Fiesta’s economic impact of almost $350 million supports over a hundred non-profits and helps fill a void that the city’s budget could not possibly achieve.” The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted that economic infusion to non-profits, so Fristoe eagerly looks forward to Fiesta’s comeback as an economic generator for doing good in the community. Aside from the dollars generated, he’s excited about the intangibles that Fiesta is famous for such as fun, inclusion and unity. Fristoe points with pride to the dedication and determination of Fiesta PMOs (Participating Member Organizations) to return to normalcy. All are focused on heeding the latest COVID-19 guidance of health officials to safeguard participants, spectators and volunteers. “We’ve survived adversity as individuals and PMOs,” Fristoe says, “and we’re coming back strong and resilient. Signs of renewed vitality are everywhere. For example, the vibrant colors of Fiesta poster entries and the creative designs of Fiesta medals convey positive and popular subjects such as cascarones, piñatas, Fiesta royalty and revered local landmarks such as the Alamo and the Tower of the Americas. It’s as if Fiesta is like the phoenix, an immortal bird associated with Greek mythology that regenerates or is born again.”

A sampling of Fiesta events underscores resilience as the focus for 2022.
Battle of Flowers Parade – Friday, April 8 (Vanguard – 8:55 am; parade – 9:30 am), 2.5-mile route beginning at San Antonio College on Main Avenue and ending at St. Mary’s and Commerce streets downtown.
Fiesta Flambeau Parade – Saturday, April 9 (Vanguard – 7 pm; parade – 7:30 pm), similar to route of Battle of Flowers Parade The Battle of Flowers Parade, which ultimately mushroomed into the city-wide Fiesta festivities, began in 1891 to honor the heroes of Texas Revolution battles at the Alamo, San Jacinto and Goliad. It’s the nation’s second-oldest and largest day parade, says parade chair Melissa Branch, and the oldest run completely by women volunteers. “We were just six weeks away from presenting the 2020 parade when the country went into lockdown,” Branch remembers. “We were forced to dismantle our floats and decorations and invest in protective equipment to extend the shelf life of many of our props. We reimbursed patrons who had purchased tickets and basically

shuttered everything. What most people don’t realize is that over 70 percent of our parade participants are high school students. When the schools went into virtual learning mode, that guaranteed the parade would remain sidelined.” However, the pandemic precipitated a partnership between Fiesta’s two biggest parades. In March 2021, social media showed Mardi Gras krewes in New Orleans decorating porches with replicas of floats, so Fiesta Flambeau officials contacted the Battle of Flowers Association to ascertain interest in partnering and producing a city-wide Porch Parade with the theme of “Takin’ It to Your Street,” according to Linda Skop, Fiesta Flambeau public relations director. “The Porch Parade would bring the two organizations together for collaboration for the first time in the history of Fiesta,” she says. “Both were intent on bringing the joy and spirit of Fiesta virtually and safely.” Fiesta TV sponsor KSAT-12 agreed to publicize the parade, and generous merchants donated prizes for winners in residential, business and school categories.

Night in Old San Antonio (NIOSA) – Tuesday, April 5, through Friday, April 8 – 5:30-10:30 pm, La Villita NIOSA, a mixture of multi-cultural food, entertainment and fun, is the top fundraiser for the Conservation Society of San Antonio, says Jana Foreman, NIOSA chair. The colorful four-evening event funds the Society’s preservation of historic properties as well as education programs. NIOSA 2020 was cancelled, and NIOSA in June 2021 was downsized to enable social distancing. “Many of our booths were moved or eliminated,” she explains, “and we implemented new serving procedures to limit direct contact with guests and provided our volunteers with rules for sanitizing and serving food and drinks. To stay safe in 2022, we will comply with the City’s suggestions and mandates.”
Fiesta de los Nińos – Saturday, April 2, 10 am to 6 pm, San Antonio Museum of Science and Technology at Port San Antonio, 102 Mabry Fiesta de los Nińos transforms the museum grounds at Port San Antonio into a family-friendly Fiesta environment where guests can enjoy rides, games, entertainment and food, plus STEM activities. Instead of an in-person event in 2021, a virtual ¡Esports Fiesta! tournament brought together 10 esports clubs from Texas universities in a competition for scholarship money, says Stephanie Garcia, business development specialist. This year, Port San Antonio is working with partner ASM Global to stage the biggest festival yet. It will include musical entertainment, esports competitions and STEM activity booths.
United Way Kids’ Festival – Saturday, April 9, 11 am to 2 pm, Copernicus Park, 5003 Lord Road Sponsored by the Texas Cavaliers, this free event for children and their families offers music, games and community resources focused on early childhood development. The pandemic necessitated a drive-through celebration last year, says Katherine Pipoly, the United Way ‘s Ready Children vice president, “but we plan to transition back to an in-person event, hosted outside with ample room to socially distance partner organizations as well as families.”

Praise Dance Celebration – Sunday, April 10, 4 pm to 6 pm, Carver Cultural Center, 226 N. Hackberry The celebration originated in 2002 as a free community event to share and celebrate artistic forms of liturgical dance, according to Cheryl Palmer, PMO commissioner for Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Because the pandemic forced cancellation of the 2021 celebration, ATO enlisted the aid of a videographer, the Fiesta Commission and past dance group performers to present a virtual celebration. “Controlling the numbers of performers and patrons by following COVID-19 protocols is key to an in-person event in 2022,” Palmer adds.
Palo Alto College PACfest – Thursday, April 7, Noon to 10 pm, Palo Alto College “PACfest began in 1988 to raise funds for Palo Alto College student organizations,” says Leticia De La Rosa, director of community collaborations. “It has remained a beacon of hope for our students and the Southside community. It’s one of the largest official Fiesta San Antonio events south of Highway 90.” After a pause because of the pandemic, family-friendly PACfest 2022 looks to attract 10,000 members of the community with food, games, music, a social media “alley” and the Fiesta Grilldown, a carne asada contest.
FREDSTOCK – Friday, April 8, 2 pm to 10 pm, Longwith Radio, Television and Film Building parking lot, San Antonio College (SAC), 121 W. Courtland Place In 2010, General Manager Donnie Meals of the college’s KSYM radio station conceptualized FREDSTOCK – named in memory of

Last year, the Courtland Music Business Association, SAC’s music business club, produced Virtual FREDSTOCK 2021 and simulcasted it in April and June, says Dr. Ruben C. Rodriguez, Music Business Program coordinator. “FREDSTOCK 2022 will be back on campus,” he adds. “It will be the traditional outdoor festival scenario with safety precautions such as hand sanitizer and PPE available for FREDHEADS.”

Fiesta Family Blues Festival – Friday, April 8, Noon to 4 pm (Family Fun Time), 6 to 11 pm (Blues Concert), The Espee Pavilion, 1174 E. Commerce “We (the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum) saw there was not a program centered around blues music, nor was there a Fiesta event on the Eastside other than the Queen of Soul pageant,” says Deborah Omowale Jarmon, museum CEO/director. “Hence, the birth of the Blues Festival in 2019.” The Festival is a way to highlight the museum’s mission to collect, preserve and share the African American cultural heritage of the San Antonio region, she explains. Festival highlights include food and craft vendors, children’s games and plenty of live music from local and national acts.
Pińatas in the Barrio – Saturday, April 2, Noon to 10 pm, Plaza Guadalupe, 1327 Guadalupe St. Presented by non-profit AUEDA (Action United for Entertainers and Diverse Artists), Pińatas in the Barrio began in 1997 when Rick Uriegas and his sister, Margo, were asked to create an annual event that Westside seniors on limited incomes would enjoy. It included the crowning of a senior-citizen King and Queen of the Barrio to complement other Fiesta royalty. “In 2021, our event did not take place, but we kept the faith and kept in contact with our volunteers, vendors, artists and donors,” event coordinator Uriegas says. So, the hope for 2022 is a return to a safe, fun event that offers live entertainment and food and that raises funds for AUEDA to help those in the artistic and entertainment community needing assistance.

Fiesta de los Spurs Run – Saturday, April 9, 6 pm, along the Fiesta Flambeau Parade route “Our run is new to the Fiesta calendar,” says Julie McCarty, manager of Spurs Give. “In 2020, when the world shut down, so did our plans for our first-ever Spurs Give event during Fiesta to get the community excited about fitness. We can’t wait to get families out and inspire them to be active in a fun way.” McCarty also says that the Fiesta del los Spurs Run seeks to raise money for the mission of non-profit Spurs Give to provide financial aid to worthwhile community programs. “We are looking forward to bringing people together for a good cause and a fun event,” she adds. “All in all, Fiesta gives families an opportunity to get away from the troubles of the day,” Fiesta Commission President Fristoe says. “It brings our diverse community together, even if for only 11 days. It allows people to forget, to interact, to embrace, to share, to laugh. That’s certainly a positive, beneficial way for our city to rebound from the pandemic.”

Training had literally been the first order of business on 1 August 1907 when the Army established the Aeronautical Division of the Signal Corps. The original detachment had but three personnel, two enlisted personnel and an officer—Capt Charles Deforest Chandler, Corp Edward War, and PFC Joseph E. Barrett. They had been ordered to New York City to begin study in the maintenance and repair of balloons and dirigibles a month before the division activated under the tutelage of Leo Stevens and his balloon factory technicians. The balloon factory in New York City was really the first technical school. The complexity of the air mission has always necessitated comprehensive training due to the dangerous nature of our mission and the gravity penalty paid on every flight. The small nature of America’s Air Force had allowed for mostly contractor-provided training until World War I when the need for pilots and mechanics outstripped the irregular methods of training used to that point. Vast numbers of air bases were built, such as Kelly Field in San Antonio to produce pilots and mechanics to fight in the First World War. Final training was accomplished overseas for most pilots availing the experience and materiel of allies. After the war, the numbers and support of the Air Service ebbed and its size and requirements ebbed. It was literally a country club air force in the inter-war period and the Air Service newsletters are replete with golfing and polo exploits along with the very real dangers of flying in the early days of aviation. By the 1930s, a single basic flying training base-Randolph

The expansion of the Air Corps began none too soon in 1939, with World War II already on the horizon in Europe. The United States at that time lagged well behind the world’s best Air Forces, producing a mere 301 pilots in 1938 with about 22,300 personnel. Under the first expansion program, the Air Corps was targeted to grow by 3,000 aircraft and 50,000 personnel, of whom 12,000 would be pilots. But with war preparations pressing the United States in multiple theaters, the target grew much larger—up to 70,000 pilots and 300,000 technical specialists. In 1941, training was considered an important primary responsibility and was controlled by the Chief of Staff of the Air Corps (Lt Gen Hap Arnold) and delegated to the Deputy Chief of Staff to oversee and manage Maj Gen Barton K. Yount. Once war began, however, training became of such paramount importance that its

command needed to be consolidated in the field. The Flying Training Command became Army Air Forces Training Command when it was constituted 23 January 1942 in Washington. Still under command on General Yount, it would move to Fort Worth and occupy the top six floors of a multi-story art deco build owned by the Railroad Texas and Pacific Railroad. That building still stands proudly today and is the forerunner of today’s command element at JBSA-Randolph in Martin Hall and the surrounding campus. The newly formed training command had a herculean job: train from almost scratch the world’s largest and most capable Air Force as soon as humanly possible. General Yount and our predecessors knew the importance and no-fail nature of the job ahead, and quickly set about to manage and complete a vast constellation of training bases stretching from coast to coast that would exceed 400 primary bases.

At his first senior leader gathering General Arnold tasked all of his major command and NAF commanders with mission orders. For the combat commands under General Spaatz, “Prepare the specified forces for war (equipped and trained). Move and command those forces. Determine the requirements (beyond hose now specified) to defeat Germany (revise WPD-1). General Duncan and the HQ 8th Air Force to be the initial source of planning staff.. . .” To General Yount and Training Command, General Arnold was also to the point: Full command responsibility for the satisfactory accomplishment of the flying training program through the 70,000 pilot training program.” Maj Gen Walter Weaver of AAF Technical Training Command (which would be aligned under AAF Training Command within a year, was also tasked to accomplish the training of at least 300,000 technical specialists. To his training commanders, Arnold was blunt: “I know the assignment is very heavy. The means available are inadequate. And it will be done.” And with those mission type orders, the 80-year history of AETC began. There were construction projects, water shortages, weather and health challenges and always shifting programmed graduates in almost every specialty. Topping it off, the available technology and aircraft changed constantly—evolving on the fly towards highly sophisticated machines that by war’s end would include onboard radar and computer technology; jet aircraft, helicopters and nuclear weapons. When he came to San Antonio in December 1942 to give a speech to Airmen in training at the San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center—today’s Lackland AFB, Arnold knew that dark days would pass and that the Air Force was on the precipice of a transformation heretofore unseen in human history: Staggering new technology is on the way to greet Hitler and Hirohito--and we don't think that they are going to like it, either. Within a few months the enemy will feel the impact of hundreds

of planes dropping their bombs not on one or two nights a week, but every day and night in the week… When that time comes we will hit their submarines while being constructed on their slipways, at their bases, and out in the wide oceans. We will hit their transportation facilities, their industries, their munitions plants, their airplane and tank factories. Hundreds of thousands of people will have to move from ruined cities to other localities. They will realize what a true war of today means. Such is the fate that will come to both Germany and Japan. Hap Arnold made that speech in front of ten acres of air cadets, pilots and crew that would fight the coming key air battles of World War II. The photograph of the speech and arrayed Airmen made its way around the world and became the iconic photograph of Air Corps training in World War II—it vastness and its potential all neatly arrayed in rows for the nation’s enemies to see and ponder. Training Command began and continues to be defined by its vast mission. The command’s cadres has to teach and educate generations of Airmen on the doctrine, requirements and specifications the entire inventory of air and space weapons and specialties. Our legacy then and now through 80-years of “fighting through” challenges. Recruit, train educate and innovate. The assignment is very heavy. The means available are often inadequate. And it will continue to be done.

San Antonio has celebrated the military since the first Battle of Flowers parade in 1891 that had about 15,000 people in attendance. Since then, the event has grown and so has the representation of the military. Today, San Antonio continues its tradition that honors the historic relationship between San Antonio and the U.S. Armed Forces. “We take the title of Military City USA very seriously and look for any opportunity to strengthen the bond between the military and civilian communities of San Antonio,” said Jon Fristoe, Fiesta San Antonio Commission President.
Two 2019 Military Ambassadors fasten Fiesta Medals to their sashes. A Fiesta tradition, medals inspired by military are collected, swapped and shared by the most serious Fiesta fans.
“Since 1891, Fiesta serves as a celebration to honor the heroes of the Alamo,” said Steve Rosenauer, Fiesta San Antonio Commission Executive Director. “The Fiesta San Antonio Commission and its 100-plus participating member organizations are proud to continue recognizing and honoring our military members through the involvement of the Military Ambassador Program.” “Our Military Ambassadors represent the heroes who have fought for the freedoms we enjoy today,” said Brig. Gen. Caroline M. Miller, 502nd Air Base Wing and JBSA commander. “The communities surrounding JBSA show phenomenal support and appreciation to the men and women of the armed services, and during Fiesta, they are able to share their personal bond with the Military Ambassadors.” “These dedicated service members represent each branch of the United States military and they create a positive impact throughout the 11 days of Fiesta by sharing their talents, attending events, promoting the military, engaging with Fiesta volunteers and guests and being positive role models to exemplify why San Antonio is Military City USA!,” Rosenauer said. “As a military retiree myself, I can attest that relationship is no better demonstrated than through Fiesta’s partnership with the Military,” Fristoe said. “The Military Ambassador Program is one that acknowledges service members who represent the best in all of us: patriotism, diversity, resilience, community engagement, teamwork and inspiration. “To have the Ambassadors participate in Fiesta as we celebrate our heritage and culture is testament to them as well as to their leaders who allow them the time to do so,” Fristoe added. “We are proud to support and endorse them as the literal linkage between the civilian and military communities.”

Pandemonium is the word for Fiesta Pins and Medals. We call it Pin Pandemonium – literally mayhem, madness, uproar, bedlam, hullabaloo – and the biggest and only official Medal event during Fiesta. Presented by Monarch Trophy Studio, Pin Pandemonium at Fiesta Fiesta is where the most serious medal hoarders go to buy, trade, and give away medals. All proceeds directly benefit local non-profits and other members of Fiesta San Antonio – all committed to preserving the traditions of Fiesta and supporting efforts to preserve and evolve Fiesta for future generations.
Live Music and Fireworks and more. Fiesta Fiesta’s main stage is nonstop from beginning to end with rockin’ everything –from DJs, to the best Military rock band, and special guest artists you won’t want to miss. In between, comes the official-and-always-funbusiness of starting Fiesta 2022 – the People’s Parade through Hemisfair with official Fiesta Royalty and the nonprofits that bring us some 100 official Fiesta events, followed by the cutting of the tie and the breaking of the cascaron.

the “Six Food Republics of Texas.” From the “Piney Curtain” of East Texas, “The Acadian Coast” along the Gulf, “Hill Country” of Central Texas, “Tex-Mex” of South Texas, “Cowboy Cuisine” of the North and Northwest, and “The Green Chili Line” west of The Pecos River. **Due to construction, the Taste of the Republic will be held at The Good Kind, 1127 South St. Mary’s St.
Not all Fiesta foods come on a stick – unique recipes like paella and ceviche are served up at The Taste of the Republic, a VIP-style event within Fiesta® Fiesta.
What is Texas Cuisine? Chef Brian West, a former Culinary Institute of America, San Antonio instructor, lets us in on a little history. East Texas: Piney Curtain — Of any region of the Lone Star State, East Texas has the most Southern influence. Considered the gateway to the American South, in those beloved towns, east of the Trinity River, Southern-style comfort food is king. Think sweet potato pies, peach cobbler, and fried food. The Gulf: Acadian Coast — Influenced by the French-Canadians known as “Acadians,” the Gulf is home to Texas oysters, when at their peak, have been called “the tastiest in North America.” These large, juicy delicacies are immensely diverse in flavor and vary in taste depending on which part of the gulf they come from. Prepared simply with usually just a dash of Tabasco, Texas oysters are in high demand especially in “Oyster County” of the North East. Central Texas: Hill Country — When it comes to Texas barbecue, smoke is king. From the beef brisket of the cowboys to the smoked sausage influenced by German and Czech immigrants, Texas barbecue has evolved over time. Compared to its Southern, Carolina, and Kansas City cousins, Texas, in part, has a Mexican influence. Textbook Texan barbecue sauce starts with a tomato base and brisket is served sliced, not shredded, to preserve the fat and flavor. South Texas: Tex-Mex — Just as “traditional” Mexican food evolved from two great cultures of Spain and the natives of Ancient Mexico, Tex-Mex took its inspiration from American and Mexican traditions. Add beef to chili, cheddar cheese to enchiladas, and breakfast sausage and eggs to a tortilla and you’ve created a few of staples from its rich history.
WWW.FIESTASANANTONIO.ORG | FIESTA SAN ANTONIO 2022
“The nachos, breakfast tacos and enchiladas we love are ours alone,” West said. “No, they are not Mexican, but we have a long tradition of cooking this way for hundreds of years and it deserves to be a part of the spotlight.”
North Texas: Cowboy Cuisine — Beef is a staple in all six culinary regions of Texas, but North Texas owes its prosperity to the cattle industry. In Dallas or Fort Worth, foodies can dine in upscale restaurants enjoying juicy ribeye steaks of high-quality Texas beef. Texas has a long history of exporting its choicest beef to the Northeast and contributing to the reputations of New York’s and Boston’s top steakhouses. While few name Texas as mecca for steakhouses, the best cuts of beef are Texas grown. West Texas: The Green Chile Line — West Texas could be considered the Gateway to the Southwest. Influenced by the Native-American and Spanish culture, one boundary sets West Texas apart, and that is what West calls “The Green Chile Line.” From Adobo sauce and roasted pepper salsas to a variety of stews and more pork-centric dishes, bold flavors from chipotle and ancho chiles shine in West Texas cooking. With this history in mind, Chef West and his team are bringing a unique event to Fiesta San Antonio’s lineup that can only be experienced at Fiesta Fiesta.

SAN ANTONIO RESIDENTS AND VISITORS ENJOY FOUR PREMIER PARADES DURING THE 11 DAYS OF FIESTA®. 1. THE TEXAS CAVALIERS RIVER PARADE, APRIL 4 Starting in 1927 the “monarch of merriment” arrived by plane, train or automobile. In 1941, the Texas Cavaliers celebrated the completion of improvements to the San Antonio River Walk with the first River Parade, where the floats really float. The King and many others have been delighting audiences along the River Walk ever since.
2. THE BATTLE OF FLOWERS® PARADE, APRIL 8 This is the “grandmother” of them all, the oldest event of Fiesta San Antonio. Ladies first paraded their flower-covered carriages around the Shrine of Texas Liberty in April 1891 to commemorate the battles of The Alamo and San Jacinto. Today the parade is the largest in the country to be managed entirely by women. More than 200 floats, bands, balloons and entertainers will march down the 2.6-mile parade route.
2
3. KING WILLIAM PARADE, APRIL 9 In 1968, the King William Association, committed to preserving the oldest historic district in the State of Texas, hosted its first King William Fair. The Fair began with neighbors building booths and cooking food in conjunction with the annual home tours where residents opened their doors to allow visitors a peek inside the grand homes along King William Street. The tradition of this fun and quirky parade attracts thousands to the King William Historic District.
3 4. THE FIESTA FLAMBEAU® PARADE, APRIL 9 In 1948, Fiesta legend Reynolds Andricks created the Fiesta Flambeau® Parade to attract more visitors to San Antonio. He scheduled it as a night parade and encouraged organizations to light up their floats. Groups of men carrying torches, or flambeaus, helped brighten the way along the parade route. Today gaily lit floats, dancers and bands make the Flambeau® Parade the nation’s largest illuminated night parade.

Did you know that every single one of the more than 100 official Fiesta® events is produced by a local nonprofit or military organization? One hundred thirty one years ago, Fiesta San Antonio began as a one-parade event with the Battle of Flowers to commemorate the heroes of The Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. Today, more than 100 local nonprofits produce over 100 events during the 11 days of Fiesta. These nonprofits raise funds for causes like scholarships, medical research, historic preservation, and special needs for children and families. Fiesta is truly the way to "Have Fun AND Give Back" as the proceeds from these events go directly back into the community. With a variety of events ranging from music and art, to fitness and food, there is an event - if not several - for YOU! We encourage everybody to attend as many events as possible, and to also add a few new events to your personal Fiesta 2022 schedule! Fiesta San Antonio would not be possible without the amazing nonprofits that are dedicated to making Fiesta San Antonio an unforgettable experience while also spreading the news about their great causes. Join us in celebrating them and making 2022 Fiesta San Antonio one for the books! VIVA FIESTA!

• The Annual Band Festival will feature choreographed music presentations by more than 30 local high school bands. • The marching bands and color guard will participate in the famous “Parade of Bands” while being judged on marching, musicality, and crowd appeal. In between the Parade of Bands, 3 feature bands will perform their winning UIL competition routines, followed by an awards ceremony. • Concluding the evening more than 5,000 students will take to the field and join in a mass band presentation performing a medley of songs, showcasing their music and color guard, to a fantastic fireworks finale. • The purpose of the Band Festival, first held in 1935, is to encourage interest in the study of music by highlighting local high school bands in a unique venue of cooperation. The Band Festival is a joint venture between the Battle of Flowers Association® and a committee of local band directors and music educators, who together create the annual music festival. • The Battle of Flowers Band Festival is known nationwide as one of the oldest and largest events of its kind dedicated to promoting and supporting the performing and visual arts among high school students.
• The Battle of Flowers® Parade honors the heroic spirit of the patriots of the Alamo, commemorates the victories of San Jacinto and Goliad and celebrates the diversity and heritage of Texas and our nation. • As the second largest day parade in the United States, the Battle of Flowers® Parade supports the educational, artistic, social and philanthropic achievements of our community’s youth. • The Battle of Flowers® parade holds the distinction of being the first celebration held in Alamo Plaza and is considered the founding event of Fiesta® San Antonio. • The parade has entertained our city every year since 1891, except during World Wars I and II as well as the Pandemic of 2020 and 2021. • This parade is the oldest parade in the nation produced entirely by volunteer women and affords non-profit organizations the opportunity to raise funds with over 45,000 parade seats sold by charities along the parade route each year. • The 2022 Parade will honor the cultural history to which this event has contributed since its inception 131 years ago with fresh floral tributes and the theme “Viva Las Flores!”

Fiesta Teen Queen 2022 AVERY WALKER Avery Walker, a senior at Smithson Valley High School, feels so blessed to serve as The Fiesta Teen Queen 2022. Representing The Woman’s Club of San Antonio, one of the founding member organizations of the Fiesta Commission, is an incredible honor. The Woman’s Club Mission Statement, “for mutual improvement and cooperation in all charitable and educational undertakings that pertain to the greater good of humanity” goes hand in hand with Avery’s desire to help others and serve her community with kindness and grace. Fiesta is known as “the party with a purpose,” because it raises money for non-profit organizations through special events and medal sales. Avery is super excited to have the opportunity to give back once again. She is no stranger to raising funds for nonprofit organizations, as she was Smithson Valley’s 2020 candidate in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Student of the Year Campaign. The campaign was a great opportunity to share her servants heart! She learned so much about blood cancers, our community and the people in it. It was eye opening for her to meet survivors as well as patients that were currently fighting for their lives. This became much more than a seven week campaign, it is now a passion for Avery to continue helping others. Her team, “Hope for Peggy,” finished the 2020 campaign raising over $27,000 for research, education, treatments and potentially a cure for blood cancer! Avery’s extra curricular activities are very diverse! During her high school years she has danced both competitively and for her high school dance team. Avery is loving her Smithson Valley High School/Comal Independent School District Fishing Team! She was a member of the Inaugural team her sophomore year and they pulled together in their second year and were ranked #1 in the Central Texas Division. The coach was quoted saying, “Avery Walker is dominating the field”. Avery personally ranked high enough to fish in the Regional Championship at Lake Palestine in 2021. The team has their sights set on a State Championship in 2022!

2022 Miss San Antonio ELAINA MCCOULSKEY Elaina is a military ‘brat’ who had more frequent flyer miles than most adults by the time she was four! She has traveled the world with her family, gaining exposure to many different languages and cultures along the way. Elaina graduated Cum Laude from Claudia Taylor “Lady Bird” Johnson High School in San Antonio, where she participated in theatre as both an actor and techie. During her time in theatre, she found her love for special effects makeup, construction and became completely obsessed with Halloween because of their annual school haunted houses. She joined Schreiner University on an Honors scholarship where she was a cheerleader and a member of the Honor’s Society, Active Minds, and found herself consistently on the Dean’s List. However, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Elaina opted to leave Schreiner University after her sophomore year and transitioned to earning her degree online. She is now a junior at Liberty University Online and is majoring in criminal psychology. She plans on getting her PsyD and joining the FBI to interview and investigate criminals across the country. She currently works in an Emergency Room as a greeter and, as an accomplished singer and pianist, spends her time off surrounding herself with music, dance, and art projects. Elaina has competed in the Miss America System since 2017 and has won two Outstanding Teen titles, including Miss South Texas’ Outstanding Teen in 2017 and Miss Bexar County’s Outstanding Teen in 2018. As a teen titleholder, she created a social impact initiative that focused on helping military children with the struggles of changing schools and finding new friends. She mainly focused on children during her reign and attended many events, including the Fisher House Family Day, Fort Sam Houston Fair, and My Princess and Me for St. PJ’s Children’s Home. Elaina witnessed Miss San Antonio’s involvement in Fiesta San Antonio during her 2018 Teen reign, and it made her realized the importance of her community. Being the daughter of a Navy Nuclear Officer, she moved around a lot and never found a place she felt was truly her home. Distinguished Fiesta Volunteers ORDER OF THE CASCARÓN It takes more than 75,000 volunteers to make Fiesta hum. The Order of the Cascarón is our own Fiesta Hall of Honor. The award was created by the Fiesta Commission in 1992 to recognize individuals who distinguished themselves as extraordinary Fiesta volunteers. Going above and beyond the role of a normal volunteer, those selected for the Order of the Cascarón have taken that extra step for Fiesta and its participating member organizations. Below is a list of the original members and the inductees from each year after.
