AMERICA America has no kings or queens, we have no dukes or duchesses; but we do have nobility. America’s nobility are called– veterans. Their titles range from private to sergeant to general. Or—simply—GI. Our premier titles, however, are KIA, WIA and POW. Unlike other nobilities, these titles were not inherited; they were earned through their blood, sweat and tears, the holy trinity that secures our freedom. America’s nobility did not take an oath to defend a person, or a party, a king or a dictator—they took an oath to protect and defend the constitution of the United States—a set of values. And that is what veterans would like for us to honor, not just them, but the values for which they gave so much of body and soul—values such as courage, a willingness to sacrifice, service to others and to country. But what is most important, indeed vital, is that the youth of today see that we remember, that we are grateful, that service and sacrifice and courage are noble things—and that we talk about them. If love is to survive it must be expressed. The same is true of patriotism. It needs to be expressed and we do that by doing patriotic things and honoring patriots, as we do in America’s Armed Forces River Parade. We must never forget their courage and sacrifice and this Parade is the kind of remembrance that is a wonderful tradition in our country. And the fact that we remember and honor, that we are grateful, truly reflects our greatness as a nation.

CITATION
Specialist Four Santiago J. Erevia distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a radio telephone operator in Company C, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 501st Infantry, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) during search and clear mission near Tam Ky, Republic of Vietnam on May 21, 1969. After breaching an insurgent perimeter, Specialist Four Erevia was designated by his platoon leader to render first aid to several casualties, and the rest of the platoon moved forward. As he was doing so, he came under intense hostile fire from four bunkers to his left front. Although he could have taken cover with the rest of the element, he chose a retaliatory course of action. With heavy enemy fire directed at him, he moved in full view of the hostile gunners as he proceeded to crawl from one wounded man to another, gathering ammunition. Armed with two M-16 rifles and several hand grenades, he charged toward the enemy positions behind the suppressive fire of the two rifles. Under very intense fire, he continued to advance on the insurgents until he was near the first bunker. Disregarding the enemy fire, he pulled the pin from a hand grenade and advanced on the bunker, leveling suppressive fire until he could drop the grenade into the bunker, mortally wounding the insurgent and destroying the fortification. Without hesitation, he employed identical tactics as he proceeded to eliminate the next two enemy positions. With the destruction of the third bunker, Specialist Four Erevia had exhausted his supply of hand grenades. Still under intense fire from the fourth position, he courageously charged forward behind the fire emitted by his M-16 rifles. Arriving at the very edge of the bunker, he silenced the occupant within the fortification at point blank range. Through his heroic actions the lives of the wounded were saved and the members of the Company Command Post were relieved from a very precarious situation. His exemplary performance in the face of overwhelming danger was an inspiration to his entire company and contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Specialist Four Erevia’s conspicuous gallantry, extraordinary heroism, and intrepidity at the risk of his own life, above and beyond the call of duty, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

CITATION
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sp5c. Sasser distinguished himself while assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion. He was serving as a medical aidman with Company A, 3d Battalion, on a reconnaissance in force operation. His company was making an air assault when suddenly it was taken under heavy small arms, recoilless rifle, machinegun and rocket fire from well fortified enemy positions on 3 sides of the landing zone. During the first few minutes, over 30 casualties were sustained. Without hesitation, Sp5c. Sasser ran across an open rice paddy through a hail of fire to assist the wounded. After helping 1 man to safety, was painfully wounded in the left shoulder by fragments of an exploding rocket. Refusing medical attention, he ran through a barrage of rocket and automatic weapons fire to aid casualties of the initial attack and, after giving them urgently needed treatment, continued to search for other wounded. Despite two additional wounds immobilizing his legs he dragged himself through the mud toward another soldier 100 meters away. Although in agonizing pain and faint from loss of blood, Sp5c. Sasser reached the man, treated him, and proceeded on to encourage another group of soldiers to crawl 200 meters to relative safety. There he attended their wounds for 5 hours until they were evacuated. Sp5c. Sasser’s extraordinary heroism is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

CITATION
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Maj. Brady distinguished himself while serving in the Republic of Vietnam commanding a UH-1H ambulance helicopter, volunteered to rescue wounded men from a site in enemy held territory which was reported to be heavily defended and to be blanketed by fog. To reach the site he descended through heavy fog and smoke and hovered slowly along a valley trail, turning his ship sideward to blow away the fog with the backwash from his rotor blades. Despite the unchallenged, close-range enemy fire, he found the dangerously small site, where he successfully landed and evacuated 2 badly wounded South Vietnamese soldiers. He was then called to another area completely covered by dense fog where American casualties lay only 50 meters from the enemy. Two aircraft had previously been shot down and others had made unsuccessful attempts to reach this site earlier in the day. With unmatched skill and extraordinary courage, Maj. Brady made 4 flights to this embattled landing zone and successfully rescued all the wounded. On his third mission of the day Maj. Brady once again landed at a site surrounded by the enemy. The friendly ground force, pinned down by enemy fire, had been unable to reach and secure the landing zone. Although his aircraft had been badly damaged and his controls partially shot away during his initial entry into this area, he returned minutes later and rescued the remaining injured. Shortly thereafter, obtaining a replacement aircraft, Maj. Brady was requested to land in an enemy minefield where a platoon of American soldiers was trapped. A mine detonated near his helicopter, wounding 2 crewmembers and damaging his ship. In spite of this, he managed to fly 6 severely injured patients to medical aid. Throughout that day Maj. Brady utilized 3 helicopters to evacuate a total of 51 seriously wounded men, many of whom would have perished without prompt medical treatment. Maj. Brady’s bravery was in the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.

It can range from lending assistance with wheelchairs to get veterans outside for some fresh air to experiencing a weekend at camp. Some are provided phone cards and large print bibles. From coast to coast, Salvation Army programs recognize the sacrifices our veterans have made for their country.

Soldiers’ Angels sponsored by KABB/WOAI/CW35
Soldier’s Angels provides aid and comfort to the men and women in all branches of the service and their families. Thousands of “Angel” volunteers assist veterans, wounded, deployed personnel and their families in a variety of unique and effective ways. “May no soldier go unloved,” encapsulates their motivation. To date, our volunteers have sent hundreds of thousands of care packages and millions of letters to deployed service members. Over 25,000 soldiers have received First Response Backpacks. Over 6,000 severely-wounded have received voice-controlled adaptive laptops. Formed in 2003, Soldiers’ Angels is a nonprofit organization.
24 The Paseo Del Rio Association Music by Black Market Club The Paseo del Rio Association is proud to honor the veterans who serve our country through the production of the 4th annual America’s Armed Forces River Parade. Formed in 1968, the Paseo del Rio Association is a nonprofit membership association dedicated to promote, protect and preserve the San Antonio River Walk. The association accomplishes this through the production of 24 annual events and the publication of RIO Magazine, the official magazine of the San Antonio River Walk. Keep informed about YOUR River Walk through www.TheSanAntonioRiverWalk.com and like us on Facebook- San Antonio River Walk.
25 Silver Eagle Distributors/Budweiser Music by Tuff Change Band Silver Eagle, the nation’s largest Anheuser-Busch distributor, is committed to supporting the Armed Forces. As a large company in “Military City, USA,” Silver Eagle supports over 40 military organizations that give back to those who serve or have served and their families through scholarships, medical support, and memorials. In 2014, Silver Eagle provided two $5,000 scholarships to children of military men and women who have been killed or disabled in service to our country through the Folds of Honor Foundation. Silver Eagle contributes $15,000 annually to Project MEND for their Veterans program to provide durable medical equipment and assistive technologies medically necessary for rehabilitation and recovery.
