FELIZ NAVIDAD! I love living in San Antonio, but in December, I consider it a privilege. This city doesn’t just celebrate the holidays, it wraps its’ arms around it and gives everyone a big yuletide hug.

BUSINESS MANAGER

As someone who has visited every state in our great nation, I can honestly say the holiday light displays in San Antonio are the most widespread I’ve ever seen. From humble homes and storefronts to universities and the River Walk, this town goes all-out to provide seasonal glam.

ADVERTISING SALES

Celebrating the holidays is not limited to decor--it runs much deeper, and in far more meaningful ways. The outpouring of charity from individuals and businesses is heart-warming. From toy drives and community meals for those in need, to locals opening their homes, and dinner tables, to service men and women stationed here.

Holiday Flavors of the River Walk By Johnnie De La Garza

Omni La Mansion del Rio- holiday drink

10 RIO Magazine

thesanantonioriverwalk.com

On any given day, the San Antonio River Walk is buzzing with activity. After all, it’s the number one tourist destination in Texas. But during the holidays the usual buzz is amplified with blaring levels of excitement thanks to the magical transformation provided by Christmas lights adorning every tree, river boat and patio. Lights combine with the time-honored upbeat staccato of strolling mariachis and holiday carolers riding the river. Visitors feel transported into a wonderland. The holiday food offerings compliment the festive feeling. Holiday dinners and buffets will be offered at many restaurants lining the river. Elaborate offerings of turkey and ham with all the trimmings plus the addition of local chef specials. But patrons need not look far to glimpse some rare, unexpected culinary finds in many of these restaurants all month. An example of holiday gastronomy at its finest is at Las Canarias, tucked inside the Omni La Mansion del Rio. Chef Woods offers both a Christmas brunch from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. that includes a classic breakfast station, carving station with roasted duck and glazed ham, numerous sides and desserts plus a Christmas dinner from 4:00-8:00 p.m. starting with a beautiful cheese and charcuterie assortment, moving to salads, seafood, mixed carved meats with fresh, inviting sides. The sweet endings include classic pumpkin pie and a more modern egg nog milk shake shooter. Dressed in holiday splendor, this AAA Four-Diamond fine dining eatery will linger in your memory. The Rivers Edge Café + Patio Bar, located in the Hilton Palacio del Rio, is located in the heart of the holiday River Walk activity. The patio offers excellent views of river parades and crowd-watching while inside guests will find sanctuary in a quiet, elegant setting. The menu here features South Texas inspired cuisine with a mixture of BBQ, Mexican food and steaks. Chef Bocanegra has a special menu planned for Christmas Day with all the customary dishes. In addition, he will have a limited menu selection available. A guest favorite available all month is the fried chicken & grits. Marinated in buttermilk, the chicken breast comes out tender and juicy. Sitting atop a bed of fresh cheddar grits and topped with bacon jam, this is a true southern dish. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Bella on the River offers Southern European, aka Mediterranean fare, amidst an old world Spanish Bistro decor. Chef Fletcher incorporates fresh ingredients into his creative menu letting them take center stage. Many recipes are so popular they have stayed on the menu since the day Bella opened 5 years ago. The eggplant Josephine is called an appetizer, but can pass for an entrée. In addition to the succulent fried eggplant are layers of gulf shrimp and mozzarella cheese in diablo and hollandaise sauce. The Seafood Paella has been a crowd pleaser as well with fresh shrimp, clams and mussels sharing the plate with Spanish chorizo, chicken and roasted vegetables in a hearty saffron infused broth. Anyone with a sweet tooth absolutely must try Virginia’s pistachio cake which combines pistachios, caramel and chocolate for one glorious mouthful. Bella on the River won’t be open on Christmas Day, so be sure you stop in before or after, to indulge. Another option for your River Walk holiday dining is Zocca, inspired by its namesake, a small village in Northern Italy. A place where life is slower and family and friends are everything. Where food is robust and vibrant, meant to be savored slowly with a glass of wine. Conversations linger here on this quieter Bella on the Riverleg of the river. Dining al fresco on the patio eggplant Josephine is the norm while inside seating is open to the outdoors on most days. Zocca Cuisine d’Italia will offer a 5-course sit down dinner Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The New Year’s Eve dinner also includes party favors and the traditional 12 grapes of good luck at midnight. Christmas Day will be an all-day buffet that morphs from breakfast to lunch, then dinner. Selections include traditional turkey, local delights and Italian pastas. You will find some of Chef Foresman’s rustic dishes available any given day. Dishes like pumpkin filled ravioli with roasted pear in a gorgonzola cream sauce or Zocca lasagna with roasted sweet potato, spinach and spicy Italian sausage. Be sure to try the amazing caramel apple pizza or the delicious, artfully displayed plum crostata for dessert. RIO Magazine

It wouldn’t be a holiday celebration without some holiday libations. For this you must stop by the oldest bar on the river walk, the one and only Esquire Tavern. Known for having the longest wooden bar top in Texas, 100-feet in length, this tavern has been in business since 1933. There is always a party happening here with just about every type of cocktail imaginable. Expect hearty grub to keep your belly happy too. Upstairs you’ll find some good happy hour specials MondayFriday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. or descend to a new level and enter Downstairs. Here you find a quiet riverside lounge in a relaxed yet classy setting. Light bites accompany premier cocktails like the two-month aged Eggnog served from Dec 19th through the week of Christmas. Try the Champurrado Complicado, a spiked version of this popular Mexican hot chocolate made with masa, coco and a 5-rum blend.

Family-Style Celebrating

For many moms and dads, the approach of the holiday season (read: school’s out for several weeks IN A ROW) can be panic attack-inducing. Turns out, celebrating as a family and creating traditions is not just an awesome country song. It’s also a really good idea, according to the experts. Instead of focusing on showering your kids with presents, give them the gift of a memorable holiday season (plus a little present—after all, you’re not the Grinch). By Carole Miller

Go on a family date night Get all dressed up and introduce your kids to the wonderful world of the performing arts—live music, theater and dance. Snap a few family photos. This holiday season, the Magik Children’s Theatre, San Antonio’s premier professional family theatre, is producing live stage versions of two classic favorites. “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” tells the tale of Amos the mouse and his friend Emily as they attempt to save Christmas from an evil ex-elf who wants to sell the naughty and nice lists to a department store. And discover the real meaning of Christmas along with Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the “Peanuts” gang as “A Charlie Brown Christmas” comes to life on the Empire Theatre stage.

Nutcracker, courtesy of The Tobin Center of the Performing Arts

Young musicians will delight as the San Antonio Symphony performs the score from “Home Alone” live along with the movie at the Majestic Theatre. Or join visitors from around the world in impromptu sing-a-longs during Holiday Boat Caroling on the River Walk. Viewing is free to the public and goes through December 18. For all the tiny dancers out there, Christmas just isn’t magical without a night at the ballet watching the Nutcracker come to life, defeat the evil Mouse King, and whisk everyone away to a magical kingdom populated by dolls. Both the San Antonio Ballet and the Moscow Ballet perform this classic throughout December.

Check out the lights together There’s no other time of year when everything is so exciting, beautiful and brightly-lit. Start a holiday tradition with the family to get out and “see the light.” Grab the kids, toss ‘em in the car and check it out for yourselves. There are literal festivals of light as well as several “drive-thru” locations in town so you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your minivan to enjoy a show. The Holiday Magic Festival of Lights East Meets West at Retama Park has lights, lights and more lights in addition to music and dance performances from all over Asia and the United States, a Texas snow blizzard, carnival rides, street foods from the East and West, intricate Asian arts and crafts, Santa Claus and giant Christmas trees. Or just take a stroll down the River Walk and check out all the luminarias, the traditional Mexican Christmas lanterns consisting of a candle set in sand inside a small paper bag, at Fiesta de las Luminarias on the River Walk through December 18. Visit Elf Acres, a spectacular 21-acre Christmas light drive-thru experience featuring thousands of lights, animated displays and festive music played on the Elf Acres radio station. Elf Acres is located in northwest San Antonio on Grosenbacher Road. And a million twinkling lights illuminate the night sky at the University of the Incarnate Word’s Light the Way, a free walking or driving experience on Broadway (just north of downtown). And at Don Strange Ranch’s Christmas Light Fest, there are two miles of holiday lights, hayrides under the stars and shopping at Santa’s Village.

Museums are FUN! If you think a museum is a place where you can “look but don’t touch,” think again. There are several hands-on, interactive exhibits aimed at kids to help them learn without even realizing it (like sneaking veggies into a casserole or smoothie). The DoSeum becomes a holiday haven with Winter Wonderland, a festive celebration throughout December featuring light, bright, wintery workshops and activities. And experience the traveling holiday exhibit, Holiday Light Exploration, a beautiful kingdom of lights where kids can explore the creation of light, colors, shadows and reflections. At the Witte Museum, take a break from the holiday stress and take an action-packed adventure to the wildest places on Earth at the National Geographic presents Earth Explorers interactive exhibit. You and your family can plunge into polar regions, dive into oceans, soar over savannas, trek through rainforests, climb mountains, spelunk through caves and basically experience the trip of a lifetime without ever leaving Texas. San Antonio’s festivals illuminate the city yearround, but during the holiday season it shines brightest of all.

Faith and Festivals:

Holiday Traditions By Susan Yerkes From the magnificent Spanish missions, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, to the bustling banks of the River Walk, colorful celebrations of different faiths and traditions abound. December is an ideal time to visit the city’s San Fernando Cathedral and the missions, where the pageantry of the Christmas season unfolds in masses and ritual. Some of the most memorable events mark the start of the Catholic Church’s winter feast days. At 2:00 p.m. on the afternoon of December 4, hundreds of matachines, ritual dancers swathed in bells and bright feather costumes, will gather at Mission Concepción to perform a drumming, dancing pilgrimage around the church grounds and park to the nearby San Antonio River. There they honor the watery source of life. Then the procession returns to the mission to express their dancing devotion to portraits of the Immaculate Conception and the Virgin of Guadalupe. The mission church only seats 125, but crowds of religious and secular spectators watch from the grounds, the park and at the riverside. The magnificently restored San Fernando Cathedral celebrates the Virgin of Guadalupe’s feast day on December 11 with La Serenata, a free evening of traditional and contemporary music and dance performed by local artists from 10:00 p.m. to midnight, followed by a midnight bilingual Mass. 18 RIO Magazine

Mary and Joseph lead the Grand Posada through downtown San Antonio.

Another traditional Christmas celebration is La Posadas (Spanish for “the inns”) – a candlelit processions led by parishioners representing Joseph and Mary as they journeyed to Bethlehem for the birth of the baby Jesus. All are welcome to join in the processions. Each mission, an active parish, hosts a Posada through surrounding neighborhood streets. Mission Concepción’s starts at 6:30 p.m. on December 16, while Mission San Jose, known as the “Queen of the Missions,” has a nightly at 7:00p.m. December 16-23. Almost every neighborhood in San Antonio, from the humblest to the wealthiest, goes all out with Christmas lights and decorations. As you walk in La Posada, you’ll get a tour complete with special, homey sights and sounds you won’t find at other times of the year. Don’t forget your camera! And La Gran Posada, San Fernando’s traditional procession downtown, will start at Milam Park and wind through the heart of the city starting at 6:30 p.m. December 18. Christmas Eve on the River Walk is a beloved tradition for many San Antonians and visitors, and San Fernando’s 11:00 p.m. Christmas Eve service is a beautiful way to welcome Christmas Day.

The River Walk, too, rings with caroling throughout the season. Paseo Del Rio’s Ford Holiday Boat Caroling, fills the air with the sounds of joyful voices singing Christmas music, as barges filled with carolers from the throughout the area float along the downtown section of the river. The event begins at 6:15 p.m. nightly through December 18. RIO Magazine

Left: Chanukah on the River; Below: San Fernando Cathedral.

Local theater companies celebrate the holidays with special performances, too. Playhouse San Antonio, housed in a beautiful old Greek Revival-style theater near downtown, offers a poignant and beautiful musical evening with All is Calm:The Christmas Eve Truce of 1914, running December 2 through 18. A special double feature show on December 17 includes “A Marcsmen Christmas,” with the Marcsmen, the city’s top male acapella group, serenading the season. One of the season’s most traditional folk plays is La Pastorela (the shepherds’ play), a very loosely scripted drama with widely varying scripts and characters, involving shepherds on their way to Bethlehem on Christmas Eve, angels, devils the holy family and a wildly fluctuating cast, depending on where it’s presented. You never know what to expect, but you can expect a wild night at Teatro Audaz’s show, La Pastorela de

San Antonio, set for 7:00 p.m. on December 17 and 18 at San Antonio College’s McCreless Theatre. San Antonio’s multi-cultural heritage is home to several celebrations for Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. This year, Chanukah is December 24-January 1, but San Antonio’s oldest Jewish congregation, Temple Beth El, kicks the celebration off early, December 15 with a special Light Up the Night Chanukah Party, an elegant evening of dining and dancing in the beautiful old synagogue building. Tickets are limited, so reservations are a must. There’s free Chanukah fun for all on December 28, when Chabad Lubavitch of South Texas puts on its 19th annual Chanukah on the River, one of the coolest celebrations of the season. The fun starts at 4:00 p.m. at the Arneson River Theater, with a Menorah Game Show and boat parade of menorah-bearing river barges. (An $8 ticket

buys you a hot dog sack supper, traditional jelly doughnut and a barge ride). At 5:00 p.m. there’s a free concert featuring Israeli Grammy-winner Soul Farm, and a giant menorah is lit in the spirit of the season.

While you’re on the Riverwalk, La Villita Historic Arts Village is the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat, enjoy a performance at the Arnesan River Theater, and shop the many stores and galleries in the heart of downtown. Don’t miss the Bird and Pear pop up shop for handmade Milagros necklaces and super cool upcycled items created with Mexican textiles. Equinox Gallery showcases jewelry and other metalsmithing wonders, and you’ll want to check out Casa Manos Alegres for classic Mexican Folk Art. For a truly unexpected shopping experience, check out the beautiful St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, located just a few steps from the RiverWalk and Alamo. The gift shop is open on Saturdays and Sundays, and offers a large selection of religious and spiritual items from all over the world, including rosaries, statues, medals, prayer cards, books, children’s giftware, and keepsake gifts carefully chosen by the church’s parishioners. And tourists especially will not want to miss Market Square at Christmastime. Dozens of shops offer souvenirs and memorabilia and the Christmas décor at Mi Tierra provides a perfect backdrop for holiday photos (Don’t forget to stock up on traditional Mexican baked goods at the front counter!) If you are shopping for the ultimate fashion symbol of Texas, look no further than Paris Hatters. This familyowned business has been a downtown institution since 1917, and while it’s the perfect place to find a perfectly fitted cowboy hat, they also offer custom shaping and fitting of fedoras, top hats, and Bermuda hats. A beautiful variety of Lucchese boots and handcrafted leather bags rounds out their collection of goods, and there’s a good chance the owners will personally help you make the best selection. For those who want to find national brands like H&M and Macy’s, The Shops at Rivercenter delivers a good combination of famous brands and local flavor right on the Riverwalk. So do yourself a big favor this holiday season, hope in a river taxi, and actually enjoy your shopping experience. Angela Rabke is a San Antonio native, mom of three, marketing professional, and freelance writer. She loves exploring downtown and finally has a good excuse for shopping. 24 RIO Magazine

A TASTE OF SAN ANTONIO CULTURE

As the calendar turns December 1, many San Antonians are a good two months in on the annual making of tamales.

La Tamalada Photo courtesy of: The Witte Museum

Just as 5000 B.C. women pre-made the nutritious, portable meal for Aztec, Mayan and Incan warriors to sustain them on their journeys, modern-day aficionados begin as early as fall, churning out dozens and dozens in advance of holiday celebrations. Some accounts claim that the Aztecs also offered tamales to their conquerors, and so such goodwill lives on today through gift-giving at holiday time. During the late 19th to early 20th centuries, charming “Chili Queens” served tamales and other Mexican American delicacies to visiting writers such as Stephan Crane, author of “Red Badge of Courage,” and short story author William Sidney Porter (O. Henry), from dusk until dawn at various San Antonio plazas. Tamales are then, as told, part of South Texas vernacular. Those sadly unfamiliar with the packets of warm, steamy goodness, should also know that tamales are much more than a holiday dish (or, during other times of the year, an afterthought on a combination plate.) The tamal symbolizes Latino culture, its journey and history.

thesanantonioriverwalk.com

differ between Latin American cultures, with the ingredients varying just as much. In Mexico, for instance, the variance is evidenced even between towns and villages. In “Oaxaca al Gusto,” Mexican cuisine legend and author Diana Kennedy writes about 16 unique recipes from the state of Oaxaca alone. Corn, domesticated from teozintle, originated here, and when transformed into masa, it becomes the essence of the tamal that then gains character and flavor from a smattering of chiles local to each region.

The seventh annual Tamales! Holiday Festival celebrates the cultural food icon on December 3 at the Historic Pearl, when some forty restauranteurs will showcase the tamal in its vast variations. In its sixth year, the family friendly festival centers around San Antonio’s tradition with tamales, culture and music.

Truly a labor of love, tamales are without question timeconsuming to prepare; but that’s part of the allure. Not unlike a fellars’ fishing trip being more about camaraderie than bait, the annual tamalada − a gathering of friends and family during the holiday season to make and enjoy tamales − brings together young and old, seasoned and new relationships, to bid the closing year adieu and usher in the new. It’s a family reunion, a chance to soak up abuela lore.

Depending on its country of origin, the tamal starts with a banana leaf or corn husk, that is spread with masa (corn flour dough), topped with fillings such as chiles, shredded meat and beans, and then rolled and steamed. Techniques

Albeit, less ardent cooks have taken to ordering from local restaurants and factories, and perhaps there is argument to be made for the tradition of standing in line at one’s favorite tamalera for the holiday supply. But the true tamal experience RIO Magazine

happens when rolling up the sleeves to re-create a place and time when generations first united to feast from the land. The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center captures this authenticity during its annual La Gran Tamalada, taking place at the Guadalupe Theater on December 10. Here, the community comes together to preserve the time-honored tradition. Promoting cultural pride and lifelong learning, the event encourages adults and children to share in the hands-on process that is as much about the making as the eating. The quintessential tamalada remembers the meticulous care that goes into the operation of creating a tamal. Each member plays a role, forming a ritualistic assembly line of sorts, that is inspired by Spanish guitar, whispered prayer and positive conversation (lest bad luck ensue). The Cortez family, trailblazers of San Antonio’s Mexican food culture and proprietors of four downtown restaurants, act as narrators and storytellers at the Guadalupe tamalada. They are fitting messengers, having first served tamales in 1941 from a three-table café, now Mi Tierra Café Y Panderia. Also on December 10, the Witte Museum hosts La Tamalada workshop, kicked off by Comadre Gloria Solis, who shares her family culinary history. Participants will learn the art of making tamales, and prepare their own half dozen to enjoy on site or take home.

THE GREAT TAMALE INCIDENT As reported by the San Courtesy Antonio of The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Express-News in 1976, then Nebraskanative President Gerald Ford, in town for a visit, was given a tour of the Alamo at a reception held for him by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. While there, he noticed a plate of tamales, took one and began to eat it, shuck and all. He also took it in good humor when someone stopped him, removing the corn wrapper.

Health & Recreation

by Michele Stanush

There is nothing new about using music for a boost in health and wellbeing. An article in the Harvard Heart Letter noted that the ancient Chinese character for medicine also includes the character for music; music in ancient Greece was used to help with sleep, stress, and pain; and singing and chanting were used in Native American and African healing rituals. “In Western medicine, the connection was gradually broken when the art of medicine gave way to the science of medicine,” according to the Harvard Health Publications newsletter. “It’s slowly being restored as music therapists demonstrate the value of music for treating people with everything from Alzheimer’s disease to chronic pain and substance abuse problems.” Including music in everyday life is like “do-ityourself” music therapy. A study at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore found blood flow, and joy, increased when volunteers listened to music of their choosing.

On Monday, December 5, 7:00 p.m. enjoy a chorus of rich, ethereal voices singing traditional carols plus solstice and Christmas music from Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. The performance is by the San Antonio Chamber Choir and will be held at San Fernando Cathedral, 115 W. Main Plaza. The one-hour concert is a fundraiser for the historic cathedral, tickets can be purchased at the door or email hcfed@ sfcathedral.org. Full-length “Baltic Christmas” concerts offered the following weekend at different locations; see chamber website.

Wouldn’t it be cool if— the next time you went to the doctor—you were handed a prescription that had nothing to do with a pill? What if, instead, it read: Listen to music, beat a drum, or dance?

You can start filling your music prescription at the San Antonio River Walk, where you’ll find music dosed out by everyone from harpists to blues musicians to pianists to mariachis to high-energy DJs to highly regarded jazz artists, and more.

December happenings range from regular gigs to special holiday concerts.

Grammy-award winner Joe Posada—and his signature saxophone - have been performing at Landry’s Seafood Restaurant on the River Walk, 517 N. Presa, for years. Posada also plays other venues, but his band is at Landry’s most Fridays and Saturdays 6:00 p.m. to at least 11:00 p.m. No cover. Best known for fusing jazz and Tejano in unique ways, Posada and his band are eclectic and can play anything from Frank Sinatra to Bruno Mars. There’s a dance floor so you can swirl and sway and shimmy. Part II of this music/health conversation is about studies that suggest dancing, singing, and making one’s own music all have their own sets of

health and healing benefits. Again, even if you venture no farther than downtown, there’s plenty of above, including karaoke and sing-a-longs. Even if you don’t know how to dance, just let the music move you. Big picture, probably no place in San Antonio better understands—and celebrates—the “lifelong participatory” musical arts than Urban-15, a non-profit arts organization founded 40 years ago. Their cool headquarters are in a converted church at 2500 S. Presa St., just 5-10 minutes south of downtown. Urban 15 hosts so many events—for all ages; on-site and off—it’s impossible to condense. So check out their website or call for a tour: 210-736-1500. Urban-15 is also one of the places for drum experiences. : MUSIC We don’t have to be rocket scientists to know that music can soothe, invigorate, and motivate. But how does music impact us from a medical perspective? Researchers—including neuroscientists—have been exploring that very subject. Two of the ideas under study: music helps the brain make connection between nerve cells and our brains and nervous systems are hard-wired to respond to rhythm and repetition. Variables include type of music and individual tastes, but studies suggest music may help: 3 Decrease pain 3 Improve immune functioning 3 Aid in memory 3 Reduce stress and anxiety 3 Speed up workout recovery 3 Reduce symptoms of depression 3 Improve quality of sleep 3 Provide relief to heart attack and stroke victims

DO YOU BELIEVE IN

Magic?

This is the question San Antonio’s Event Show Management hopes to answer when they bring Holiday Magic: Festival of Lights to Retama Park in Selma this holiday season.

Festival of Lights is a multi-cultural celebration of the holidays, featuring over 30 giant illuminated displays with an “East Meets West” theme. These displays feature Chinese lanterns, but the term “lanterns” can be deceiving. When you think of a Chinese lantern, most people would envision the paper lanterns they’ve seen in the movies or in photographs. But picture this...the lanterns on display at Festival of Lights could be a 30-foot tall and 50-foot long dragons, or a display featuring dozens and dozens of illuminated sharks, fish, rays, jellyfish and other creatures found under the sea. It could be a group of a dozen panda bears surrounded by colorful flowers, or an illuminated statue of our own Statue of Liberty, holding her torch for all to find their way. This is what Holiday Magic: Festival of Lights, brings to the greater San Antonio area starting in December. “Festival of Lights is an event like no one has ever seen in San Antonio. You’ll see breathtaking, colorful, themed displays. Plus millions of holiday lights, street foods from around the world, and performances from Chinese acrobats and musicians,” says Steve Pichichero, founder of Event Show Management, producers of the festival. “There has never been an event thesanantonioriverwalk.com

quite like this in the U.S., so we are so proud to bring this to our home town.” Festival of Lights is a multi-cultural event, but also a celebration of everything we all love about the holiday season. It will feature a 36-foot tall Christmas tree, with a lighting ceremony held nightly that includes music and spectacular pyro-technics. The holiday celebration continues with a display of literally millions of sparkling lights. Santa Claus is on-hand nightly through December 24th, with no extra fee to bring your camera and take photos with your kids. There is a snow fall experience for children of all ages, and even real reindeer on select nights. “Each night features a parade – the type of parade you’ve seen on TV in a celebration of Asian cultures. Plus fireworks, and a big New Year’s Eve celebration,” states Mr. Pichichero. “This is a must-see event for all of Central Texas!” Another special feature at Festival of Lights is a huge carnival on-site, including a ferris wheel, rides for the kids and fullscale carnival spectacular thrill rides. The carnival is included with admission to the festival, which is a first-of-its-kind in the San Antonio area, making the event a huge value for attendees.

Historic Arts Village S H O P S

G A L L ER IES

R ESTAU R AN T S

La Villita, south of the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, was originally settled nearly 300 years ago as one of the city’s first neighborhoods. In 1939, La Villita Historic Arts Village was established and the neighborhood was adapted into a center for teaching regional arts and crafts and to serve as an artists market. Today, nearly 30 shops and galleries offer distinct handcrafted items by artists from San Antonio and surrounding areas. You’ll find paintings, folk art, textiles, sculptures, copper wares, jewelry, and more. Plus, in the midst of these tree-lined walkways and plazas, enjoy a savory culinary experience at the area restaurants with options ranging from traditional Mexican flavors to steakhouse favorites.
