Letter from the Editor

The Official Magazine of the River Walk Miranda Puente Yoga taught at Alta Vista Skateshop.

Publisher Louis Doucette Louis@travelingblender.com

“ON THE GLOBAL SCALE OF OBESITY, OUR GREAT NATION SITS DEAD LAST.” (NOTICE I USED THE WORD “SIT,” WHICH BURNS FEWER CALORIES THAN STANDING.) And in 2014 San Antonio held the unflattering title of second fattest city in America. It’s no wonder, with our decadent array of deliciously naughty food! But that’s changing. In the last two years we’ve dropped to eighth place. We’re moving down the scale in the right direction.

Editor Paula Schechter editor@paseodelrio.com Business Manager Vicki Schroder Vicki@travelingblender.com

Public programs such as Siclovia and BCycle have taken off around town. More bike lanes are appearing, and more bikers are getting out and using them. Yoga classes are popping up in new places, from outdoor yoga at the Tobin Center for Performing Arts to indoor sessions at the downtown Alta Vista Skate shop.

Contributing Writers Bob McCullough Michele McMurry Carole Miller Eric Moreno Susan Yerkes

This issue of RIO Magazine is packed with stories that inspire movement. Take a walk, a run or a bike ride along the River Walk. Nearby bowling, golfing and walking tours abound. Thrillseekers will gravitate towards zip lining or exploring ancient caverns.

Advertising Sales San Antonio:

Of course, the other half of the get-fit equation is healthy eating. Vibrant restaurants serving fresh, nutritious and tantalizing dishes from many culinary cultures are sprouting up throughout the city. Check out a few of them in my Top 10 list of Healthy Places to Eat on page 35. Today, San Antonio is gaining ground when it comes to fitness, and losing pounds in the process. That’s cause for celebration. I’d never suggest we ban margaritas or Mexican food. My personal style is: “Indulge-Repent-Replenish-Repeat.” But part of living well is living long and healthy, and becoming a fitter city is cause for celebration.

River Walk

The Prettiest Little Work-Out in Texas By Susan Yerkes

When you think of the San Antonio River Walk, what images come to mind? A tree-lined oasis filled with restaurants, boutiques and night spots below the bustling city street? A sunny river barge ride? A cool margarita and a plate of spicy Mexican food?

If you like exercising with a group, check out River City Run San Antonio’s 5k running tours of downtown’s coolest attractions. The tours are easy runs, with 14 stops along the way, and last 1-2 hours. They start out every Saturday and Sunday morning at 8 a.m. from the plaza in front of the Alamo. The company also offers private guided runs 7 days a week.

It’s all of those, but a perfect place for healthy exercise? That may come as a surprise.

Photo by Bob Howen. Courtesy of VisitSA.com

In the past few years the River Walk has widened and lengthened to the north and south, opening up new opportunities for beautiful urban rambles and all kinds of hiking, biking, boating and other outdoor recreation to get your heart pumping as fast as a flamenco dancer’s feet.

www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Today’s full River Walk is one of the greatest linear parks in the nation, with 15 miles of continuous trail, connecting to more than 2,000 acres of urban parkland. The upper reaches start in the city’s beautiful old “central park’ -- Brackenridge Park -on the north, and continue through the art-filled, lushly landscaped Museum Reach. It seamlessly evolves into the most famous area, the Downtown River Walk in the historic heart of downtown with the hotels, restaurants and shopping. From there, the Mission Reach winds another 10-plus miles to the south, with portals to each of the four magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site Spanish missions along the way. You can chart your walk, run or bike trip by a series of mile markers every 1/10th of a mile along the trail. The “zero marker” is smack in the center of downtown, in front of the Drury Inn on the sidewalk across from San Fernando Cathedral, which when built in 1738, was the center of town. This is fitness in a beautiful setting like no other. Tailor your route and the level of exercise to your own pace, from a casual ramble along the Museum Reach to a hearty half-day hiking trip of the Mission Reach, with wide, rolling trails, native landscaping and flocks of waterfowl. Many hikers and joggers make imaginative use of the picnic tables and benches along the way for yoga sessions, stretching or exercising in place. You can get intense interval training in on stairs that connect the River Walk to street level around Mission Concepcion and at VFW Boulevard.

Walking, jogging or running are great ways to see the sights, but biking is another popular option. You’ll find San Antonio B-cycle’s ride-sharing bike racks at dozens of points along the River Walk and the downtown area, and the $12 day-pass gets you 24 hours of two-wheeling fun on a sturdy 10-speed bike with a roomy basket for your water bottle and snack. Looking for something different in a bike? San Antonio Bike Tours offers 2-6 hour tours or custom excursions on their recumbent three-wheel trikes, a perfect solution for folks who might not be comfortable on a 10-speed bike, or who just want a different kind of action. Blue Star Bicycles, in the Blue Star complex by the King William district, rents regular bikes as well as power-assist motorized bicycles for those who want to add a little “oomph” to their pedaling power. If you’re in town Sept. 25, you’re in for a twowheeling treat. Bring your bike or rent one and join the day-long festivities at Siclovia, a city-wide celebration of movement sponsored by the YMCA that draws thousands of folks on foot, bike or trike to the open-air party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dozens of streets are closed off so that young and old can participate. There are free exercise classes, bike clinics, food trucks and music to enjoy. Water sports are a great workout option in the summer heat, and the Mission Reach offers great ways to enjoy the River Walk from the river itself. Canoe, kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals are available at different sites along the river, and the vendors approved by the San Antonio River Authority also offer various group trips and lessons. (The stand-up paddleboard vendor, SUPSATX, also offers yoga sessions.) Today’s River Walk offers a 15-mile-long smorgasboard of opportunities to pair a workout at your own pace with a day or an hour of fantastic sightseeing in some of San Antonio’s most picturesque spots. And at the end of the day, there’s a great relaxing meal and a cold beer waiting in the shade of a downtown River Walk café. Tonight, you deserve dessert!

La Villita, south of the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, was originally settled nearly 300 years ago as one of the city’s first neighborhoods. In 1939, La Villita Historic Arts Village was established and the neighborhood was adapted into a center for teaching regional arts and crafts and to serve as an artists market. Today, nearly 30 shops and galleries offer distinct handcrafted items by artists from San Antonio and surrounding areas. You’ll find paintings, folk art, textiles, sculptures, copper wares, jewelry, and more. Plus, in the midst of these tree-lined walkways and plazas, enjoy a savory culinary experience at the area restaurants with options ranging from traditional Mexican flavors to steakhouse favorites.

“Go Outside & Play”

Mom says,

By Carole Miller

Photo courtesy of Tobin Center for the Performing Arts

Photo courtesy of Texas Pack & Paddle

Turns out mothers really do know what’s best when they told us go outside and play!

“If everyone else jumped in the river would you do it, too?” In the case of kayaking on the San Antonio River, the answer would have to be a really, sarcastic, “Yes, Mom, I would!”

In September, San Antonio has average high temperatures in the upper 70s and lows in the upper 50s, making this month the ideal time to listen to your mother. Of course, every mom instinctively knows the Vitamin D provided by exposure to the sun strengthens your immune system and makes your bones grow stronger. It also releases endorphins, which can raise your mood and keep it stable. And now that you’re a grownup, big shot, going outside to play will give you a more varied workout. If it’s been a while since you listened to (or called) your mother, here’s what she would say: “If everyone else jumped in the river would you do it, too?” In the case of kayaking on the San Antonio River, the answer would have to be a really, sarcastic, “Yes, Mom, I would!” The Mission Reach section of the San Antonio River is on the southern end of downtown. It is open from sunrise ‘til sunset and offers eight miles of paddling trails. There are several kayak rental companies that offer shuttle trips, group tours led by certified instructors, hourly rentals, tandem kayaks that seat up to two adults and one child, classes for beginners and even mobile kayak rentals where they will bring the kayaks to you at any city park. In addition to working your biceps, triceps, shoulders and upper back, kayaking is a great cardiovascular workout. It’s a low-impact exercise so there is much less risk of wear-andtear on joints and tissues and it burns up to 450 calories per hour. Or you can go ride a bike. If you can’t get to your bike past the Christmas decorations or couldn’t get it on the plane as a carry on — no problem! You can rent one from a BCycle station. They are located all over downtown. And don’t worry if it’s been a while, it’s just like riding a . . . well . . . you know.

All you have to do is walk up to any BCycle station and let the directions guide you step-by-step to pay with a credit card and select a bike. Or you can sign up for a membership online at sanantonio.bcycle.com and pay by the day, month or year. And since biking burns between 550-650 calories per hour, you can enjoy a guilt-free, post-ride Margarita. Both Brackenridge and Hemisfair parks have beautiful bike trails to explore or you can enjoy your own, personal sightseeing tour of downtown. Be sure and wear your helmet and get home in time for dinner! For a more social spin on outdoor fitness, Fitness on the Plaza at the Tobin Center is a fun monthly event sponsored by University Health System. Every month there is a different theme such as Yoga for Families, Shockwave Cross Fitness or Joyride on the Plaza. On Sunday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m., EnergyX Fitness, San Antonio’s first rowing studio, will lead a high-energy, super strength and endurance system workout full of body weight movements combined with unconventional methods. And it’s free so you’ve got nothing to lose (except maybe love handles). Or you can literally get some “old school” exercise at one of the many downtown parks including Crockett, Hemisfair, La Villita, and Brackenridge (just north of downtown). Roosevelt Park has a swimming pool and Madison Square has a dog park so you can bring your best friend. Perhaps you would like to combine dinner, romance and light exercise with bench style swings overlooking the River Walk at the The Luxury restaurant located downtown on Jones street. A popular date place for “swingers.”

Turn fitness into child’s play on the playground by doing some pull-ups on the monkey bars, park bench push-ups or see-saw crunches. Heck, just hop on a swing and get those legs pumping. It’s probably not as easy as you remember. Use your imagination to come up with new exercises and work out all new muscles or just run around, turn cartwheels and feel like a kid again. You will end up using muscles you haven’t used in years. Or, if you happen to have an actual child, bring them with you! Any mother will tell you chasing children around the park is a workout all its own. Plus, the Surgeon General says playground equipment gets children moving and having fun at the same time. Slides provide climbing exercise for the legs, bars exercise arms and shoulders, jungle gyms strengthen arms, legs and shoulders and all the equipment together encourages children to run from one piece to another, giving them a healthy dose of cardiovascular, hearthealthy exercise. https://sanantonio.bcycle.com

Great Right Out of the Gate! NECTAR WINE BAR AND ALE HOUSE

Nectar Wine Bar and Ale House is a classic wine bar. The same style as you will find throughout the rest of the world but is unique to San Antonio. Specializing in great wine at a low price, Nectar also offers a sumptuous meat and cheese menu. The menu features not only incredible meats and cheeses but also a wide variety of food from nibbles to meal, such as pizza made with pita bread, Shrimp stacked on top of a small salad and served on toast points, and almond encrusted brie served hot out of the oven and drizzled with Amarena cherries. The interior is eclectic-chic. Bright blue and pink chairs pair with accent tables made from 100-year old barn doors. Stunning crystal chandeliers hang next to industrial spiral rimmed HVAC tubes. Walls are adorned with an ever-changing art. People clad in shorts and suits feel comfortable side by side. The whole contrasting vibe just works at Nectar. Nectar is always the place to go for a great time. San Antonio

MOVE TO IMPROVE by Bob McCullough

Ninety-year-old actor-comedian-dancer Dick Van Dyke succinctly identifies his secret to fitness and longevity in the title of his recent book, Keep Moving. In San Antonio, that’s easy to do with a plethora of outdoor and indoor activities that make it easy for young and older to get fit and have fun at the same time. A fun activity available almost year-round because of San Antonio’s temperate climate is golf – without the use of an electric or gas-powered cart. For instance, the seven Alamo City Golf Trail courses scattered around the metropolitan area – Brackenridge (located 3 miles from downtown), Cedar Creek, Mission del Lago, Northern Hills, Olmos Basin, Riverside and Willow Springs – all permit golfers to walk the courses and burn more calories. Visit www.alamocitygolftrail.com for more information.

Brackenridge Municipal Golf Course

Tennis, another lifetime sport can be enjoyed at nearby McFarlin Tennis Center at 1503 San Pedro Ave. in San Pedro Park, a short distance north of downtown. McFarlin offers 22 lighted hard courts as well as a pro shop, lockers and showers. Modest rental fees apply, and reservations can be made at (210) 207-7275. A prime example is Síclovía (pronounced, sick-lowvia) where as many as 70,000 participants literally go out and play in the street.

Organized by the YMCA of Greater San Antonio, Síclovía makes a select city thoroughfare temporarily car-free for the public to enjoy a safe, fun place to walk, bike, jog, skateboard and take part in exercise classes. The next such free event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, along a 2.7-mile stretch of Broadway from Mahncke Park to Alamo Plaza. This will mark the 5th annual Síclovía, and in recognition of this milestone, the route will be known as “Birthday on Broadway.” The route includes reclovías, or stopping points, that offer water, first aid, kid-friendly activities, food trucks, music and highly popular group-exercise sessions. Síclovía information and updates can be found at www.siclovia.org. As for walking, the world-famous Paseo del Rio twisting and turning through the heart of the Alamo City, and featuring scenic pathways paralleling the San Antonio River, simply can’t be beat. The addition of the river’s Museum Reach to the north of downtown and the Mission Reach to the south now means walkers have, in essence, a 15-mile linear park for exploration and perspiration. Look for metal mile-markers embedded in the pathways to track your distance. Van Dyke sums up the importance of remaining active at any time of life: “When people ask my secret to staying youthful at an age when getting up and down from your chair on your own is considered an accomplishment, you know what I tell them? Keep moving.”

in the City

San Antonio is a walking town, and with a smartphone and comfortable footwear, one can tour the city’s historic sites, eat and drink like los reyes (the kings), and stay fit. While traversing the River Walk, why not learn about how the once-described “dirty river” evolved into the lush, sub-street-level oasis we enjoy today? The free-of-charge Historic Hugman River Walk Tour, named for architect and visionary Robert H. H. Hugman, tells the story by way of scannable quick response (QR) codes, located on bronze plaques that identify his designs of stone paving, bridges, stairways and the Arneson River Theater. Expand your reach of downtown on the Texas Star Trail tour, accessible via an interactive mobile application that sections an enormity of sites into five areas of interest showcasing historic structures, natural areas and buildings from the mid-1700s through the early 20th century. The newly enhanced application also features historic photos, allowing users a then-and-now experience. The entire tour stretches about three miles from Alamo Plaza to Hemisfair Park, but is easily paused or abbreviated. A good reason for pause is to drink up the many watering holes along the way. Some of San Antonio’s best lore lies in downtown bars. Sample them on your own, or reserve a spot on the Barwalk tour. Proprietor Emzy King guides groups through five famous and lesser-known spots, most dating back to the 1800s and early 1900s, adding history and trivia about each. Often visited on the route are the Buckhorn, Texas’ oldest stand-alone saloon, the Menger Bar, patronized by Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt and his Rough Riders, and Bar 414, tucked discretely inside the Sheraton Gunter Hotel and named for blues musician Robert Johnson who in 1936 recorded some of his best-known works in suite 414. One might also raise a glass to complimentary peanuts and first-checked-bag-free at what was once the members-only St. Anthony Club, located inside the recently renovated St. Anthony Hotel. In addition to attracting dignitaries and celebrities during its hay day, the co-founders of Southwest Airlines conceived a business plan here over drinks in 1967. Allow for about a 20-minute walk from downtown to Southtown and the enchanting King William neighborhood. There is no better way to take in its charm and some 50 points of interest than by foot. A walking tour leads pedestrians back in time to the days of prominence when mostly German merchants built stately homes near the River and center of commerce. Today, residents, some of San Antonio’s best restaurants, as well as bed and breakfasts occupy most of the homes, but a few are open to the public. The Steves Homestead, for example, has operated as a museum for more than 50 years, and the San Antonio Conservation Society conducts behind-the-scenes tours of sections not otherwise accessible. That, and Villa Finale, the final residence of preservationist Walter Nold Mathis, both embody popular styles of 19th century

Our old pancakes were fine, but America deserved better. So, we reworked our recipe. Added good stuff like fresh buttermilk, real eggs, flour and a hint of vanilla. The result? Fluffier, tastier, better buttermilk pancakes. Just look at that tall stack of fluffiness. But E. Crocket don’t take ourt word for it—you decide. St.

Sir Isaac Newton’s Theory of Exercise Sir Isaac Newton once said, “What goes up, must come down.” The knighted physicist probably wasn’t thinking of exercise when he uttered this phrase, but it rings true on two levels-in the sky and below the ground. Think of it as exercise with a scientific zest!

Wimberley Zipline Adventures (a scenic one-hour drive north of downtown) not only offers its visitors the rigorous challenge of an uphill hike over rocky terrain, but it rewards them with the utter thrill of soaring through the air at incredible speeds. “Ziplining is the most exhilarating way to experience the gorgeous views of the central Texas Hill Country,” said Thomas J. Nugent, Wimberley Zipline Adventures Front Desk Manager. “You get all this while hiking, socializing, and jumping off cliff sides.” Visitors are greeted by gorgeous views of sprawling rocky terrain dotted with lush cedar, oak, and mesquite trees. Loud shrieks of excitement mixed with fear can be heard as people fly high up in the air at up to 30 miles per hour! It’s not just about the adrenaline rush. You’re in for a great workout on your ¾ mile assent over rocky terrain to the launching point for the ziplines. Ten separate routes, ranging in length from 150 to nearly 900 feet, offer pulse-pounding adventure. Each tour (hike and zipline) lasts between 1.5 to 2 hours. When Sir Newton mentioned “coming down” he may not have considered walking…180-feet below ground. Natural Bridge Caverns (only 30 minutes north of downtown) has been satiating the appetites www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

of amateur spelunkers since 1964 and offering a good aerobic workout in the process.

Wimberly ZipLine Adventures

Natural Bridge Caverns

“Natural Bridge Caverns is one of those places you have to see to believe,” said Travis Wuest, Vice President and Director of Marketing and PR for Natural Bridge Caverns. “There’s such beauty just under the surface.” Right from the start, visitors who take one of the two cavern tours (the Discovery Tour or the Hidden Passages Tour) are told that this is activity is going to be “strenuous.” As you walk the nearly halfmile tour, you travel uphill and downhill mostly on natural surfaces witnessing some of the most amazing natural beauty on the planet. The walk itself is challenging, but the culprit that gives people trouble is the atmosphere. The caverns are at a constant refreshing 70 degrees, however, the humidity is a staggering 99%! But don’t let that stop you. Seeing the majestic and intricate soda straw stalactites, flowstones, and chandeliers will make the effort well worth your time. You owe your quads and calves this workout at least once. Natural Bridge Caverns also offers an exhilarating zipline experience with a manmade steel structure from which to climb and launch.
