Omni La Mansion del Rio is an iconic structure on the River Walk. However, it didn’t start life as a hotel. In 1853 it opened its doors as St. Mary’s Academy. Then in 1934 it housed St. Mary’s University School of Law. In 1968 in reopened its doors as a luxury hotel. The public is welcome to schedule a tour of the property with the hotel concierge.

Letter from the Editor
The Official Magazine of the River Walk
Publisher Louis Doucette Louis@travelingblender.com Editor Paula Schechter editor@paseodelrio.com Splashtown is located 5 minutes from downtown San Antonio.
WATER IS A WORD THAT EVOKES BOTH SERIOUS CONVERSATION AND HAPPY TIMES IN SAN ANTONIO. On the serious side, San Antonio promotes water conservation and protecting our water sources and water quality. The River Walk partners closely with our good friends at the San Antonio River Authority who are leaders in watershed solutions. They teach us that even unintended offenses, like feeding the wildlife, can endanger the delicate ecosystem and ultimately change the water quality. Please resist the urge to feed the ducks and squirrels while visiting us. As for happy times in the water, who doesn’t love to think about a refreshing visit to Splashtown water park where you float, slide and splash the day away. Getting drenched with water on a Seaworld ride is also a popular option and you get to enjoy, up close and personal, our water loving friends. Don’t miss the chance to take a guided tour of the River Walk on Rio San Antonio Cruises during your visit. This issue of RIO Magazine is dedicated to all things water like swimming pools, lakes, tubing and the kind of watering holes where you can wet your whistle.

River Walk
Splashing
Good Time
By Susan Yerkes
The San Antonio River has been a gathering place and a sacred source of water since long before the first European settlers set foot here. Today, the River Walk is the lively center of a historic, culturally vibrant town. It’s also a great place to have fun. Especially during San Antonio’s long, hot summer, the river beckons visitors and residents alike with a variety of cool activities, from boating to paddle-boarding, hiking, biking, barge tours and more. Consider them all, and dive in! Well, don’t actually dive in. Swimming in the river is prohibited, and park rangers will ticket you before you can towel off. The classic way to navigate the river in the downtown area is by Rio San Antonio Cruises barge. When visionary architect Robert Hugman came up with his grand plan for an American Venice on the River Walk back in the ‘30s, he proposed river transit by gondola. More dependable barges soon took their place, and have been operating around the River Walk ever since. Today, Rio San Antonio’s water taxis ply the downtown river area, with 39 convenient stops, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day. For a cool dose of local color and an entertaining narrative about the city’s fascinating history, try a river barge tour – one of the most popular activities for visitors. You can even charter a river barge for a private cruise, or a group lunch or supper. Get details on river taxis and tours at riosanantonio.com. In recent years, their route has expanded along with the River Walk itself, now stretching up to the San Antonio Museum of Art on the north through an ingenious lock system. The Museum Reach, as it’s known, is a marvelous mile-and-a-third long. Beautifully landscaped banks and dozens of fantastic public art installations lead up past the lively Pearl Complex to the riverside San Antonio Museum of Art. The Museum Reach transformed the River Walk north of downtown. Now an even more ambitious project has restored an eight-mile stretch of the river south of downtown – the Mission Reach. This is the perfect place to get back to nature. The shoreline has been returned to its natural contours, now thick with native grasses and colorful wildflowers. More than 20,000

trees, including walnut, cypress and possumhaw, have been planted. It’s an amazing transition to go from the bustling downtown River Walk to this peaceful oasis, where turtles bask in the sun on wide rocks and redtailed hawks and egrets soar overhead.
It’s a bird-watcher’s paradise. You may spot egrets, owls, red-shouldered hawks, and wood ducks, along with several graceful varieties of heron. White-winged doves, Carolina wrens, Black-crested titmice, Carolina Chickadees and American robins soar and flutter over open fields and parkland along the banks. If you fancy fishing, and have a Texas fishing license, there are bluegills, channel cats, largemouth bass, sunfish and shiners in the river. If you want to bike the Mission Reach, but didn’t bring your own wheels, no worries -- San Antonio’s B-Cycle bike sharing program has convenient bike racks placed all the way along the recreational river areas, from Brackenridge Park down to the southernmost mission. See details and a map of bike rack locations at sanantonio.bcycle.com. The Mission Reach is a great place to actually get into the river, too. Paddle sports, previously banned on the river, are now exploding in popularity since the Mission Reach opened. Kayaking and canoeing, long banned in the river, are now in full swing, and stand-up paddle-boarding is also taking off. The San Antonio River Authority’s website, www.sara-tx. org/river-recreation, has a wealth of information, including maps and a list of approved vendors for renting your craft of choice. (All of them also offer paddle tours and lessons.) A day on the Mission Reach is also a great way to explore San Antonio’ celebrated Spanish Colonial missions, which, with the Alamo, comprise one of only a few UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the nation, and the only one in Texas. This trip, why not explore the San Antonio River Walk several ways? Whether you’re sitting on a barge, strolling the river bank or paddling your own canoe, you’re in for a splashing good time. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Had Boudro’s been serving Blackened Prime Rib, fresh Guacamole made tableside and Prickly Pear Margaritas back in 1836, the King of the Wild Frontier would have left Tennessee sooner. Loved by locals and travelers, Boudro’s is a mecca for great food on the River Walk. Frommers says ”Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Dine riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

La Villita, south of the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, was originally settled nearly 300 years ago as one of the city’s first neighborhoods. In 1939, La Villita Historic Arts Village was established and the neighborhood was adapted into a center for teaching regional arts and crafts and to serve as an artists market. Today, nearly 30 shops and galleries offer distinct handcrafted items by artists from San Antonio and surrounding areas. You’ll find paintings, folk art, textiles, sculptures, copper wares, jewelry, and more. Plus, in the midst of these tree-lined walkways and plazas, enjoy a savory culinary experience at the area restaurants with options ranging from traditional Mexican flavors to steakhouse favorites.

Turns out, people like “watering holes” as much as animals, ‘cept we ain’t drink’n just the water. You may have noticed that there are more watering holes in downtown San Antonio than you can shake a swizzle stick at. So while in town, why not take in a few of the authentic local watering holes.
The Alamo City is home to so many different types of historical drinking establishments that it would be a shame not to have a high ball in old bank vault or sit in the once-private club where the original business plan for Southwest Airlines was drawn out on a napkin. Or how about savoring an exclusive barrel aged whiskey? For a truly unique experience, travel back in time and drink up some history during the Barwalk Historic Bar Tour. Begin at The Alamo and walk in the actual footsteps of local legends with Barwalk tour guide and owner Emzy King (who is literally a walking encyclopedia). Drink in some of the most historic bars in Texas in a truly unique boutique pub crawl that should not be missed. For more information or to book a tour, visit www.thebarwalk.com. So when is a bar not just a bar? When it’s a saloon, club, pub, specialty bar or sports bar… naturally. Depending on the food and drinks served, the type of customers who gather there www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com
and the activities or entertainment that takes place in the establishment, a bar by any other name still smells sweet. SALOONS conjure up images of the wild west and gunslingers. At the Buckhorn Saloon you wouldn’t be far off. Founded in 1881, it is the oldest stand-alone saloon in Texas and has a fascinating history. Owner Albert Friedrich gave a free beer to anyone who brought a rack of antlers or horns. And rattlesnake rattles were good for a shot of whiskey. Those rules, by the way, are still in effect and the local beer selection has grown considerably since 1881. CLUBS existed from 1959-1971 as a clever workaround when Texas prohibited the sale of alcohol by the drink. Clubs were formed and membership fees collected. Back in the day, free drinks could be served at the clubs to members only. One such favorite is the St. Anthony Club where Southwest Airlines was conceived on the cocktail napkin over drinks.
SPECIALTY SPIRIT BARS feature unique, high-quality spirits. Ruth’s Chris Steak House on the River Walk has an amazing wine selection, but the not-to-be-missed adult beverage is their handcrafted George Dickel Tennessee Barrel Select Whiskey that is barreled exclusively for David Duke, the owner of Ruth’s Chris. Try it in a signature Ruth’s Chris Manhattan. Perfection. Nectar Wine Bar & Ale House has been open less than a year and was voted by locals as Best Bar In San Antonio and Best Wine Bar in two different local magazines. On a national level Food & Wine, Cosmpolitan and Time magazines have all recognized this modestlysized wine bar with hundreds of wines and beers. Weekenders can enjoy a $28 Ultimate Mimosa that contains skewers of caviar, muffins, smoked salmon, fruit, cheese and half a lobster tail. The décor is simple yet elegant. People clad in shorts and suits feel comfortable side by side. The great vibe is all thanks to
husband and wife owners Rob and Rachel Stephens. The thoughtful meat and cheese selections pair well. SoHo Wine & Martini Bar, formerly a bank vault, is renowned for their handcrafted dessert cocktails like nutter-butter or crème brule martinis. PUBS are known for having a regular clientele. That definition would cover just about every place that serves alcohol in Texas, so we’ll narrow it down a bit. Pub food is referred to as “pub grub” and includes comfort dishes such as shepherd’s pie and fish and chips. For a true pub experience, raise a pint with the locals at The Esquire Tavern, Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub or MadDogs British Pub which all offer various forms of entertainment. For a Cajun twist try Pat Obrien’s with Cheers style hospitality featuring Hurricanes and Cajun cuisine as comfort food and drink. SPORTS BARS are for sports fans looking to wet their whistle while cheering on their favorite teams. Locals gather at Tex’s Sports Bar to watch the Spurs while enjoying a selection of Texas beers, margaritas and pina coladas. Charlie Wants a Burger is another wildly popular place to take in a game, have a beer and enjoy a delicious burger.

Splashing
FLOATING By Eric Moreno
Summer vacations in hot destinations are perfect for making memories that warm your heart during cold winter months. Time in the water is an essential ingredient. Build your cache of winter remembrances at any of the three local water parks. Whether you prefer splashing, aimlessly floating or a high energy, thrill-seeking water ride, San Antonio has got the water park for you. Belly flops are optional. One of the city’s premiere tourist destinations, SeaWorld San Antonio is also home to its signature water park Aquatica. With nearly a dozen rides and attractions, Aquatica is truly a must-visit site for all water park enthusiasts. Highlights of Aquatica include rides such as Walhalla Waves, a unique tube ride that sends passengers rushing up the side of a zero gravity wall, Tassie’s Twisters, in which single or double riders of tubes get tossed around a bowl before launching them out a descending chute, and Stingray Falls, Aquatica’s signature ride in which passengers twist and turn through a glassed-in area in which they come face to face with stingrays and tropical fish. This is the only ride of its kind in the world. New to Aquatica is Roa’s Aviary, a 13,500 square foot aviary that contains over 100 birds of over 40 different species. Visitors can float, swim walk or wad among them in a series of pools, rivers, and grottoes. Aquatica can be visited either by itself or as part of a visit to SeaWorld. At over 30 years old, Splashtown San Antonio is the de facto “granddaddy” of area water parks. Located just 10 minutes from the River Walk, Splashtown offers a great mix of attractions for thrill seekers and more laid back visitors. The park’s signature attraction is its half-million gallon wave pool which often has “Dive In” movies on Friday nights during the summer months. Splashtown also features a lazy river that circle the park allowing
Thrill Seeking
swimmers, splashers, or those looking to casually float along and see the entire park in comfort and style. For those aforementioned thrill seekers, Splashtown has quite a few adrenaline-pumping water slides and rides to get you going. The Head Rush, the Serpentines, the Luge, and the Hydra are all breathtaking water slide rides. The “star” of the show is the aptly named Starflight. This slide allows one or two riders to ride down in enclosed, or blacked out, tubes. The riders twist, turn, and flip up the sides of the tubes until they are shot into the open. The newest member on the list of San Antonio’s water parks is easily its most unique. Morgan’s Wonderland became the world’s first theme park designed with special-needs individuals in mind. Built so anyone and everyone can enjoy it, the completely wheelchair-accessible park has over 25 attractions for visitors, including the Water Works and the Wharf. The Water Works is an ideal splash pad for families, especially those with young children. There are a number of water-related activities to play in and with, including squirting pipes, spinning water wheels, and special dams that control the water flow. The Wharf is also unique at Morgan’s Wonderland in that it not only lets visitors a chance to fire off water cannons, taking aim at special twirling targets moored out on the Wharf’s lagoon. You can also pilot remotecontrolled pirate ships or take part in the Morgan’s Wonderland’s catchand-release fishing options.

Take a Dip into
SAN ANTONIO HISTORY By Michele McMurry
Visit www.sanantonio.gov/parksandrec for more information about park amenities, including locations and hours of operation.
Coastal excursions and private water parks beckon rightfully this time of year, but San Antonio’s oldest public parks and pools offer swimmers a place to cool off and nab a refresher in local history. We’ve highlighted three local treasures, each bearing its own story and unique offerings.
What is now Woodlawn Lake Park evolved circuitously through the works of private interests and municipal government. The iconic reservoir with lighthouse dates back to late 19th century visionaries credited with developing a first-of-its kind residential community. Eighty-acre West End Lake, forged from the damming of Alazan Creek, surpassed its intended purpose of controlling flooding, and became as much a social attraction with a floating dance pavilion, boat rides, and outdoor movies.
The weathered plaque outside San Pedro Springs Park touts it as the second oldest public park in the nation. While the claim is disputed in history books, its relevance to Texas history is indisputable. The naturally occurring springs in the area quenched the thirst of the earliest settlers and Spanish explorers and stabled U.S. Army camels. Some accounts indicated it also set the stage for political rallies and prisoner detention during military conflict.
The stone remains of an old nearby hotel were repurposed during the mid1920s construction of Woodlawn swimming pool within the park, which was also sourced from nearby artesian wells. Families flock to today’s modernized, slide-equipped pool, in addition to other lakeside amenities including a gymnasium, trails, and casting pond.
Its use became more recreational after the Civil War, when cement was used to line the basin of an old lake bed. This exemplified a pivotal shift away from recreating in rivers and creeks, and toward public swimming pools. The largest of the City’s pools – and the only city public pool that was originally spring-fed – today holds one million gallons of municipal water. Swimming is seasonal, but you can stroll the banks with its majestic Cypress trees year-round.

Circa 1920 Roosevelt Park, like many early San Antonio gardens and parks, beautified an abandoned gravel quarry. It was doubly named Roosevelt Park and Lambert Park at different times for U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, a national forest and parkland advocate, and San Antonio Parks Commissioner Ray Lambert, a trail blazer of public swimming pools. The nearly 13-acre green space features an enclosed swimming pool with tubular slide, pavilion, and clubhouse. Although the recreational area was conceived to serve surrounding South San Antonio neighborhoods, its location just steps from the River Walk, Mission Trail, and former Lone Star Brewery make it worth the splash for everyone.

What do the American coot, crested caracara, Eastern phoebe and Nashville warbler have in common?
refuge and ultimately expressed interest in partnering with the National Audubon Society, which officially came on to the scene in 2004. Today, Audubon operates the site, while SAWS takes care of the infrastructure.
They’ve been seen hanging out at the “hotel for birds,” also known as the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, situated just a 20-minute drive south of downtown San Antonio at the edge of the rugged Brush Country that stretches all the way to the Texas-Mexico border. It not only attracts birds but also approximately 10,000 people a year who want to connect to nature through birds and their habitats.
This includes 7.5 miles of hiking (and some driving) trails, plus the combination Visitor Center/Nature Store in the historic Leeper House with its signature broad wooden porches that was relocated from the grounds of the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio. Lush vegetation and bird feeders galore surround this starting point for all Audubon Center activities. Everyone who visits receives an easy-to-follow trail map on one side of legal-sized sheet of paper and a handy checklist of birds and other wildlife that might be seen along the trails.
San Antonio’s location on the busy north-south central flyway between Canada and Central America makes the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center a prime spot for birding. The 1,200-acre natural area consists of 600-acre Mitchell Lake, 215 acres of wetlands and ponds and 385 acres of upland habitat, thus offering something for everyone in the world of birds. More than 300 bird species have been observed along with 120 types of plants, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and insects. But this seemingly unspoiled environment wasn’t always so pristine. For decades, Mitchell Lake played an integral role in San Antonio’s sewage treatment system. The passage of the Clean Water Act of 1972 halted the dumping of raw sewage into the lake and completely reversed its fortunes. A citizens’ group, the Mitchell Lake Wetlands Society, endeavored to turn the area owned by the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) into a wildlife www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com
In addition to luring outdoor enthusiasts from far and near, the Center greets hundreds of children who take advantage of educational programs during the school year. Other organized activities include guided birding tours for a nominal fee beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday mornings (and also on the fourth Saturday of the month) for up to four hours. The Mitchell Lake Audubon Center at 10570 Pleasanton Road welcomes visitors from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission fees are $5 for adults, $2 for children ages 6 to 18 and free for children age 5 and younger. Membership packages offer various benefits including free admission to two other Audubon Centers in North Texas. The latest information about Mitchell Lake Audubon Center and special events can be found at www.MitchellLake.audubon.org at (210) 628-1639. The Center exists primarily “for the birds,” but flocks of bird- and naturelovers like to migrate there, too, for enjoyable, unhurried interactions with Mother Nature. RIO Magazine 47
