Letter from the Editor

The Official Magazine of the River Walk

Murphy’s St. Patrick’s Day River Parade & Festival, March 12 & 13, Noon till 6pm at the Arneson River Theatre and throughout the River Walk.

“May the saddest day of your future be no worse than your happiest day on the River Walk” – Irish saying (slightly modified)

While our friends on the east coast emerge from harsh winter weather, those of us who are fortunate to visit or live in San Antonio are basking in 75 degree afternoon weather. San Antonio is the perfect spring break destination not just because of our idyllic weather, but because of all the wonderful sights, sounds, tastes and activities. Regardless of your age, interests or pocket book we can entertain you. World-class music and theatre? Check. Museums? Check. Shopping? Check. Nature? Check. Nightlife? Check. Great food? Check. Farmer’s Markets? Check. Art scene? Check. Amusement parks? Check. This issue of RIO Magazine is packed with all kinds of great ideas to make your spring break vacation awesome. From amazing limestone caverns and thrilling amusement parks to a plethora of cultural activities downtown. Please check out my personal Top 10 list of kid-friendly things to do on page 36. Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day on the River Walk is a tradition that goes back to 1968 when the Harp & Shamrock Society of Texas partnered with the Paseo del Rio Association to bring authentic Irish entertainment and a parade to the river. That tradition continues along with the dyeing of the river green at 2pm each day of the festival. P.S. Friendly request - please do NOT feed the wildlife on the River Walk. It upsets their delicate ecosystem.

River Walk

Kid Friendly Spots

Enjoy a Brown Cow at Charlie Wants a Burger.

lk a W r e iv R e h t n o

By Claudia Alarcon

The River Walk is a fun place for the whole family, with lots of things to do, see, and explore. Despite its reputation as the margarita capital of the planet, it is home to many family-friendly restaurants where kiddos are treated like VIPs. From special menu items to activities and birthday party packets, there are plenty places to visit throughout the day. If you’re looking for a casual, uniquely San Antonio spot with an Old World vibe, look no further than Schilo’s. This affordable family-friendly deli set in an old mercantile store has been serving authentic German cuisine since 1917, and is one of the oldest continually operated restaurants in the State of Texas. Generations of San Antonians cherish fond memories of playing in the old telephone booth and staring in awe at a room full of taxidermy animals reminiscent of the Buckhorn Saloon. If you are looking for a homestyle breakfast with pancakes for the kids, Schilo’s does not disappoint. And their famous homemade root beer is popular with people of all ages, from 5 to 95. If you are in the mood for south-of-the-border fare, Casa Rio has one of the most recognizable atmospheres on the River Walk, with its patio filled with tables under colorful umbrellas. And did we mention the mariachis? Casa Rio is the oldest restaurant on the River Walk, and is definitely the place to go for those aforementioned margaritas and a good meal at a good value. For the kids, they offer house-made, non-alcoholic beverages that are better alternatives to your everyday soda, including watermelon agua fresca, a refreshing drink made with fresh watermelon, and horchata, a traditional Latin American drink made with rice, vanilla, and cinnamon. For sports fans seeking a place to catch the game while keeping the kids fed and entertained, check out Charlie Wants a Burger. The family-friendly sports bar serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week, from 7:30 a.m. until late night. The idea behind this two-story, modern industrial concept is that the whole family can find something they like on the menu, and they can dine while catching major sports events on 11 big screen TVs.  Charlie’s Little Leaguer’s menu for children 12 and under features mini burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, All-American hot dogs, and chicken fingers, all served with hand-cut fried potatoes. They are also famous for their thick homemade shakes. For grown-ups, the sports bar features adult shakes spiked with a variety of liquors, as well as an extensive craft beer menu with local and regional selections.

RIO Magazine

At first glance it would appear that Zocca, the Italian eatery at the Westin Riverwalk, may be “too fancy” for children. Located on the most tranquil part of the River Walk, the upscale restaurant has a romantic vibe and a sunny patio perfect for a quiet brunch or drinks during happy hour. But it turns out Zocca rolls out the red carpet for the little ones, offering tasty, healthy menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Kids can enjoy treats like blueberry and banana pancake lollipops served with low-fat yogurt, fruit and syrup; spaghetti and meatballs tossed in olive oil or tomato sauce; and crispy chicken fingers with ranch or BBQ sauce for dipping, with a side of carrots and celery sticks. They can even join in the happy hour fun with a Shirley Temple or Roy Rogers. But perhaps the biggest hit on the menu with kids and adults alike is the chocolate pizza, a very unique item created by one of the Zocca chefs that combines white and dark chocolate on a crispy crust drizzled with caramel.

We can’t talk about family-friendly restaurants on the River Walk without mentioning the popular Rainforest Café. The national giant is known for its atmosphere that recreates a tropical rainforest with waterfalls, lush vegetation, and zany creature characters. The menu here is filled with American classics such as pastas, burgers, seafood, steaks and chicken. Kids age 10 and under can choose items from the kids’ menu such as dinosaur-shaped nuggets, popcorn shrimp, and St. Louis-style BBQ ribs, with sides like apple sauce, steamed vegetables or fresh fruit. They also include items from the Kids LiveWell program, verified by the National Restaurant Association and Healthy Dining to meet specific nutritional criteria established by leading health organizations’ scientific guidelines. A popular option for dessert, the chocolatey Sparkling Volcano is sure to wow the whole table. And who doesn’t love ice cream? Take a break from all the action and dip into Ben & Jerry’s for a scoop, sundae, or shake with your favorite flavors from their ample selection. What a sweet way to end your fun-filled, family adventure on the River Walk!

La Villita, south of the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, was originally settled nearly 300 years ago as one of the city’s first neighborhoods. In 1939, La Villita Historic Arts Village was established and the neighborhood was adapted into a center for teaching regional arts and crafts and to serve as an artists market. Today, nearly 30 shops and galleries offer distinct handcrafted items by artists from San Antonio and surrounding areas. You’ll find paintings, folk art, textiles, sculptures, copper wares, jewelry, and more. Plus, in the midst of these tree-lined walkways and plazas, enjoy a savory culinary experience at the area restaurants with options ranging from traditional Mexican flavors to steakhouse favorites.

Seeking a fun outdoor activity or just something new to try while in town? Then don’t leave San Antonio before doing a Segway tour at SegCity. It’s a great way to sight-see, not to mention the exhilarating sensation of gliding effortlessly throughout downtown San Antonio! Within minutes you’ll operate it like a pro because the Segway is extremely easy to use and is designed to mimic walking. It’s particularly good for those who are, shall we say, “balance challenged.”Segways are self-balancing once powered on, so relax this vacation and let its 5 gyroscopic sensors do all the work for you! An additional advantage of a Segway tour is how much ground you’ll cover in a short time. First time visitors to San Antonio often say their tour helped them get familiarized with the area and find sites to explore. Before embarking on a tour, guests receive a brief demo from their guide, then each rider is trained individually until comfortable operating a Segway. There is no prior experience necessary to drive a Segway and return riders will admit, it doesn’t take long to pick up Segway skills. While most people riding with SegCity are tourists, they also cater to locals looking to entertain out of town guests, birthday celebrations, anniversaries, and even do lots of corporate team building activities. 28

RIO Magazine

SegCity’s longest and most popular route, the Ultimate Tour, covers sites such as the Alamo, the San Fernando Cathedral, and La Villita. The highlight is a scenic ride along the southern River Walk banks, followed by the breathtaking Victorian era homes of the historic King William District. Other options include a ghost tour, a breakfast tour, a private tour and more. For a safe, personal experience, SegCity limits tour group sizees so you won’t feel lost in the crowd. Reservations are recommended to guarantee your spot. Segways are fairly addicting so if you are roadtripping throughout Texas, be sure and check out SegCity’s other locations in Austin, Galveston and Corpus Christi for more Segway adventures. If after taking a tour you realize you simply need a Segway or two in your life, SegCity is also an authorized dealer. They sell both new and used Segways, accessories and even off-road versions of the two-wheeler.

Alamo re-enactors

Downtown San Antonio has always been a popular playground for residents and visitors from around the world. It’s known for its rich cultural diversity and laid-back, family-friendly vibe. So it’s no surprise that finding fun and fascinating activities for youngsters, toddlers to teens, downtown in the heart of the Alamo City is so easy you might say, it’s child’s play. The University of Texas – San Antonio’s Institute of Texan Cultures, is a venerable anchor for central downtown’s HemisFair Park. It provides a whirlwind world tour through the many colorful national and ethnic groups that have settled in Texas, from prehistoric to modern times. A lot more than six flags have flown in this state. You’ll find Native American, African, Italian, English, Irish, Scottish, Japanese, German, Lebanese, Dutch, Czech, Spanish, Greek, Wendish and, even more cultures represented in this dazzling, and fun, display of diversity. The Institute, an affiliate of the Smithsonian, showcases these groups’ myriad of lifestyles and folkways with imaginative exhibits, films and multi-media geared to all ages. Get preteens pumped for a visit with the online games in the “Just For Kids” section of the Institute’s web site, TexanCultures.com.

Nighttime fun at Yanaguana Gardens Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum

Institute of Texan Cultures

A wilder side of Texan culture is on tap at the Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum in the commercial heart of downtown on E. Houston Street. Don’t let the “Saloon” in the name fool you – there’s plenty of fun for young buckaroos at this utterly unique establishment, boasting a collection of Western artifacts and oddities, from a 78,000 year-old prehistoric Irish elk and the famous 78-point buck to a stuffed “chupacabra” of Mexican folk tale fame. The Texas Ranger Museum, a more recent addition, showcases the Wild West side of Texas. The Buckhorn’s big, casual dining room also makes a great pit stop when it’s time for the kids to kick back with a frosty root beer and a burger in quite literally, the wildest surroundings in town. The Alamo, of course is a must. The lush gardens and historic displays make a pleasant place to stroll. Early March is an even more special time to be there, when Alamo buffs and living history re-enactors come out in even greater force than

usual to mark the siege and fall of the Alamo in 1836. Next door in the Shops at Rivercenter, the Rivercenter IMAX Theater’s full-length feature, “Alamo- The Price of Freedom” is a fun way to learn the history of the Alamo. For something completely different, take the kids across the street for some light amusement- located on the opposite side of Alamo Plaza. In the foyer of Ripley’ Believe It or Not! you’ll find a giant animatronic T-Rex. From within, experience the thrills of a fast ride in a snowstorm at Ripley’s 4-D Moving Theater. Just down the street the Ripley’s Haunted Adventure and Mirror Maze offer even more entertaining distraction. The fanciful Children’s Land of Make-Believe in Louis Tussaud’s Wax Museum is a breathtaking experience. Get everybody’s blood moving with a short stroll up Alamo Street to HemisFair Park’s brand-new Yanaguana Gardens playground, named for the tribe that settled by the San Antonio River thousands of years ago. Take a picnic and sit back – or lie back on the amazing mosaic panther -while the youngsters gallop around on every kind of imaginative invention conceivable, from climbing ropes and slides to swings and swiveling things. Even at night the gardens are fun, when colorful lighting illuminates the playscape, and families pose for photos in imaginative dreamscape cutouts. The best bedtime story in town plays four nights a week in historic Main Plaza, where Mexican General Santa Anna is said to have flown the red flag of “No Quarter” from his headquarters near historic San Fernando Cathedral. Now, the old stone plaza with new fountains and landscaping, draws throngs of visitors to sit at the picnic tables or their own blankets to enjoy the free, cutting-edge sound and light show San Antonio, the Saga. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

The “Mexican street food” concept stemmed from her roots as a lifelong San Antonian, “We’re using as many local companies with quality products as we possibly can, with really fresh vegetables and fruits. I love our food menu, but the bar menu is where I get to have even more fun with a wild menu of cocktails infused with fresh fruits, juices and fruit-infused liquors to reflect what is in season.” One of the restaurant’s most popular drinks is her creation, the Cucumber Mojito, with cucumber infused Tito’s Vodka, raw sugar, mint, lime juice and club soda.

dly ro The most kid-frien

By Caro

The “Broadway Reach,” a stretch of Broadway Street north of downtown, is packed with enough kid-friendly activities for an entire day of show-stopping fun bigger than its name. So start spreadin’ the news, we’re leaving today. Hop on and off the bus to explore San Antonio on a City Sightseeing Double Decker Tour bus. Magical mystery tours on these big, red buses run every day, seven days a week, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. There are several tour packages available but one of the most popular is the “Hop On, Hop Off” route where you are free to hop off and explore at any of the stops and then hop back on the next bus (double deckers arrive every 20 to 30 minutes). Grab the kids and hop off that double decker bus when it stops at The Pearl and shuffle on over to The Twig Book Shop for Wild and Wacky Twiglet Storytime. Every Friday morning at 10:30, “twiglets” of all ages join Miss Anastasia for a fantastic fable followed by creative craft time. Dance just a little farther down Broadway and discover the Do-Seum, San Antonio’s fantabulous new children’s museum. The show begins in the main entrance hall filled with tons of fun activities including an amazing musical staircase. And kids can explore six interactive galleries (Sensations Studio, Explore, Innovation Station, Spy Academy, Imagine It! and Little Town), play in the two incredible outdoor play areas, grab some healthy food in the café and find the perfect souvenir in the gift shop. The world’s first museum exhibition all about the Rubik’s Cube puzzle, “Beyond Rubik’s Cube,” arrives March 12. Whether you’re a puzzle buff, nostalgic about the Cube  and its  history or just looking for a fun and challenging way to spend a day, this exhibit is sure to steal the show. Waltz across the street from the DoSeum and take a sentimental journey back in time to Kiddie Park. Established in 1925, it’s the oldest children’s amusement park in the country and one of San Antonio’s most treasured landmarks. The pint-sized attractions include an old-fashioned Ferris wheel, famous hand-carved carousel, arcade, carnival games, pony rides and face painting. Every Wednesday features bargain pricing and every other day (except Monday and Tuesday, which is dark) is perfect way for children and adults to enjoy a nostalgic day of frolicking, old-fashioned fun.

good health through movement, healthy foods and meditation. The week of March 14-18, the Witte offers Spring Break Adventure Camps where kids can spend their mornings in the kitchen and afternoons on the range learning tricks of the trade from guest chefs and experts, exploring the container garden and presenting their very own recipes. Mamma Mia!

Hang a right at the Witte and enter the pages of your favorite childhood tales through the doors of several Storybook Houses at the beautiful San Antonio Botanical Garden. The five storybook-themed houses among the flora and fauna at the Garden (Oh! The Places You’ll Go, San Antonio & the Beanstalk, Diary of a Worm, The Little House and Sleeping Beauty) are open for little princes and princesses to explore inside and out.  Hakuna matata? Can you hear it? A new pride of lions lives just on the other side of the Witte Museum, nestled along the banks of the San Antonio River, at the San Antonio Zoo and Aquarium. More than one million visitors come to the zoo each year and experience the wonder of our amazing animal collection which includes more than 9,000 animals on 56 acres of natural landscape. The zoo’s first Annual Monarch Festival takes flight on March 4. During this event, the zoo will distribute 1,500 milkweed seeds (that’s where monarchs lay their eggs) for planting, have insect presentations and displays, crafts, games and a fanciful butterfly release at the zoo’s butterfly house. Everyone in show biz knows animals and children always steal the show so grab your Broadway babies (and toddlers and anyone young-at-heart) and you will discover that on Broadway, there’s always a little magic in the air.

Just a hop, skip and a jump north of Kiddie Park is the Witte Museum where the kids will love to explore the H-E-B Body Adventure, a full-body, interactive experience uncovering the secrets of

Fun-in-the-Sun by Bob McCullough

When winter surrenders to spring, San Antonio’s three seasonal theme parks re-emerge as fun-in-the-sun spots for guests seeking fresh air, fresh experiences and lasting memories. The River Walk, the five Spanish missions including the Alamo, the zoo, museums and other must-see attractions have long beckoned visitors from far and near. But there is just something about theme park fun that’s in a class of its own and San Antonio is fortunate to have three big ones! SeaWorld’s big splash entrance came in 1988 and ushered in a new wave of fun and more reasons to visit Destination San Antonio. Six Flags Fiesta Texas followed suit in 1992 with thrill rides galore, and ultra-accessible Morgan’s Wonderland, a park designed with special-needs individuals in mind and built for everyone’s enjoyment, made the scene in 2010. Arguably the most important word in the theme park lexicon is “new,” and all three San Antonio parks boast new attractions for 2016 that promise to satisfy guests’ neverending quests for interactive fun.

park’s new Fiesta Bay Boardwalk section, and they’ll become part of the park’s repertoire of more than 60 rides, shows and attractions.

Fireball’s 24 riders begin facing each other, then rocket back and forward and ultimately endure six inversions and a giant 7-story loop, while another 24 riders on Hurricane Force 5 rotate clockwise and counter-clockwise at 14 revolutions per minute on a giant disc. Spinsanity, a modern adaptation of the classic Tilt-A-Whirl ride, incorporates a 90-year heritage of fast-paced, spinning excitement. Coincidentally, Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Morgan’s Wonderland share one interesting thing in common—they’re both situated in former rock quarries.

From its hilltop location on the city’s western perimeter, SeaWorld San Antonio – the largest of three SeaWorld parks from coast to coast – spotlights wonders of the sea in more than two dozen shows, exhibits and rides that entertain as well as HOURS & DETAILS: inform. MorgansWonderland.com

20 Million Years Ago By Ron Aaron Eisenberg

Jules Verne’s “A Journey to the Centre of the Earth” is a marvelously entertaining book. And it’s amazing how close Verne’s fictional account came to detailing what lies beneath the surface of the earth, even though it was written in 1864. He described a journey through a subterranean world no one had ever seen. Today there are an estimated 50,000 caves that have been discovered in the United States. Two of them can be visited just a few miles from downtown San Antonio at Natural Bridge Caverns and Cascade Caverns. Both are prime examples of limestone caves carved out by rain-water over millions and millions of years. In 1960 four local college students and amateur spelunkers (cave explorers) spotted a 60-foot limestone bridge formation on the earth’s surface. They were convinced underground passages must also exist. It was on their fourth exploration trip of the area that a cool draft of air from below was felt. Eagerly crawling through two miles of cavern passageways they emerged with astonishment at the enormity of their discovery. Today Natural Bridge Caverns features 4 distinct tours. The third-generation, familyrun business is committed to preserving the cavern’ environment while sharing them with the public. It is one of the world’s premier show caverns and one of the most popular attractions in Texas. The Discovery Tour, a half-mile of the cavern discovered by the college students, is their original tour. Over the years additional tours have been added; Hidden Passages Tour features another amazing cavern, the Lantern Tour is led by hand-held lanterns and Adventure Tours is a true spelunking experience exploring undeveloped caves.

UNDERGROUND ADVENTURES Caverns maintain a constant year-round 64 degrees. To learn more, visit:

CascadeCaverns.com

NaturalBridgeCaverns.com Visitors walk through different layer of limestone and sedimentary rock dating back to the Cretaceous period when much of Texas was covered with a warm shallow sea. 20 million years ago faults formed and cracks emerged. Water seeped in and erosion began. As water moved deeper layers collapsed and formed various levels. The final stages of collapse led to the creation of the passages visitors see now. Limestone caves feature stalactites, icicles shaped formations that hang from the ceiling, and stalagmites, similarly shaped which seemingly sprout from the floor of caverns. The appearance is other worldly, closely mimicking Verne’s version of the world below. Cascade Caverns, also a limestone cave, is situated on a piece of well-documented land ownership dating back to 1837 when land grants were given for the Declaration of Independence of Texas. In 1857 it was dubbed Hester’s Cave and local young men would sneak in and carve their initials in the large stalactite at the entrance to the cave. That 19 C. graffiti is still visible today. The natural opening of Cascade Caverns was probably not open till the last 100 years, the bottom of which has still not been touched. Indians used this cave for a safe haven. Cascade Caverns opened for visitors in 1932. Today, it features a one-hour walking tour through a half-mile of corridors and winding chambers ending up 140 feet below the surface, in a space dubbed the Cathedral Room. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com RIO Magazine 47
