“I can’t think of anything better than being surrounded by American patriots.” GRAND MARSHAL

Loretta Swit

We are honored to have Loretta Swit as the 2017 Grand Marshal of the sixth annual Armed Forces River Parade. Ms. Swit is riding on a float depicting the fictional M*A*S*H 4077 camp. The theme song from the longrunning series will be played from the float throughout the parade route.

Ms. Swit is renowned for her starring role in the acclaimed television series, M*A*S*H, as Major Margaret ‘Hot Lips’ Houlihan for which she won two Emmy Awards and worldwide notoriety. Swit starred in all 11 seasons of M*A*S*H, from 1972 to 1983. She appeared in 245 of the 256 episodes. What many fans may not know about the multitalented thespian is that she has been an artist from age six and a true champion of the animal kingdom. As a watercolorist and award-winning animal activist, her new book, SwitHeart chronicles her artwork and documents her animal portraits along with descriptive anecdotes about each and her extensive philanthropic work. SwitHeart includes 65 full-color paintings and drawings, as well as 22 photographs. Proceeds from the book will be donated to charities and programs that are as dedicated, as Ms. Swit, to ending animal suffering and cruelty.

1 M*A*S*H

Swit played the sexy, extremely capable head nurse Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the television series M*A*S*H, a drama/comedy set in an American mobile army hospital during the Korean War. Swit appeared in all 11 seasons of the show, from 1972 to 1983. She appeared in 245 of the 256 episodes. Her character in the show reflected a perception of Koreans. At the beginning of the series she was blindly patriotic but softened her attitude towards the Koreans in and around the camp over time. Her portrayal of Major Houlihan was dignified and always professional when depicting her role as a nurse. She personified the trailblazing female soldier during the Korean War in a male dominated camp.

Fort Sam Houston is the home for five senior Army commands: United States Army North (Fifth Army); United States Army Medical Command; United States Army Installation Management Command; United States Army South; and the United States Army Mission and Installation Contracting Command.
