It represents, promotes and supports economic development in and around Faringdon, no matter how big or small the organisation. This month's guest speaker was Raoul Van Eijndhoven of Quidne IT who talked about how data is stored on our Computers and other electronic devices and explained the importance of good anti-virus software and regular back-ups for business continuity in the event these devices are lost, stolen or damaged.

FBBC is an informal Business Networking Club which has been attended by in excess of 250 members. It meets at 7.30 a.m. on the first working Monday of each month at the Sudbury House Hotel. There is no membership fee and no• limitations on which businesses can• attend. e-motion Electric bikes mean cycling for almost all…………

Our youngest customer is just 14 and rides his Wisper Sport across the tank tracks of Salisbury plain to school and our oldest in his nineties and uses his to get to the shops…another commutes 35 miles a day to work and back on his…Being able to maintain a constant speed of 15mph or more makes electric bikes an amazingly versatile mode of transport and well worth the investment.

What is an electric bike, ebike, pedelec..? Very simply, bicycles that are fitted with a small electric motor in one of the wheels, a battery pack, a handlebar switch for varying the speed and possibly a twist throttle (as per a motorcycle). You can ride all ebikes as you would a standard pedal cycle however when you switch it on and continue to pedal the motor comes in and propels you forwards making it much easier to pedal. It’s a bit like having a tailwind behind you at all times. So you really can forget all that strain pedaling into headwinds and the steepest of hills becomes effortless….You get the odd person who says it’s cheating but these comments are often from people who seldom get out of their cars….

With recent advances in battery technology typical distances on a single battery charge are now 30 to 50 miles, costing under 10p for a re-charge. With no insurance, road tax, mot to pay economically they also make sense. There are versions for shopping, commuting, touring, mountain biking you name it.

Waxwings (Bombycilla garrulus) This winter has witnessed large numbers of Waxwings flooding into Britain from Scandinavia, usually seen in the north of the UK and on eastern coasts, they are venturing further inland in search of food.

Large flocks of Waxwings known as “irruptions” swoop in to feed on hedgerow hawthorns, rowan berries and rosehips, 30 to 40 birds occurring in one place is most common.

Waxwings can turn up just about anywhere there are berry-bearing trees or shrubs, and that often means our town centre's and supermarket car parks.

The capacity of Waxwings to strip berry bushes bare is legendary and as a result they are constantly on the move searching for fruit – so it is worthwhile regularly checking out a local source of berries to spot them in action.

The birds, often described as dumpy, are about the size of Starlings, and have a distinctive crest.

They are buffish-brown with a black bib, black and yellow tail feathers, and yellow, black, white and red wing feathers. As well as the crest another distinctive feature is the mascara-like extension of the black bib around their eyes.

The name ‘Waxwing’ comes from the red tips to the wing feathers which resembles old-fashioned sealing wax.

Another name is ‘Silktail’, presumably because of the bright colours on their tails.

Despite their exotic almost tropical colouring, Waxwing flocks are frequently mistaken for Starlings, at least twice a week a group of around 20 or so call in just before dark into a large tree across the road, and yes’ I thought they were starlings!

Often they are indifferent to human presence, allowing us time to observe them at close range.

A good tip to entice them into your garden is to hang small pieces of chopped apple around your bird table, keep a good stock of apples though, they love them….

Last , I reflected upon one of my great loves - bubbles, being anything from Champagne and Prosecco through to a good quality Cava.

As the season of love is again upon us, I feel it only appropriate to talk bubbles once again, with a focus on Champagne.

Champagne is a sparkling wine produced in the Champagne region, north east of Paris, France. The bubbles are produced when the base wine undergoes secondary fermentation within the bottle. After bottling the wine, fermentation yeast and a small amount of sugar are added to the bottle to initiate secondary fermentation. Carbon dioxide, the byproduct of fermentation becomes dissolved within the wine, creating the bubbles.

The Champagne Appellation (regulations by which Champagne producers abide in order to label their sparkling wine Champagne) has 7 permitted grape varieties; Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, along with Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Petit Meslier and Arbane. The majority of Champagnes include a blend of the first two to three varieties listed.

Non Vintage (NV) refers to the use of the fruit (in the form of base wine) from several different years and it accounts for some 85% of Champagne produced. It is less expensive than that produced in a single vintage (single harvest).

Some more Champagne facts to win friends and influence others! Ÿ There are approximately 49 million bubbles in one bottle of Champagne (I spent 4 hours last night counting them all - not really!!) someone obviously did but was too embarrassed to own up to that one! Ÿ The pressure in a bottle of Champagne is 90 pounds per square inch, about three times of that in your car's tyre - or the same as that of a tyre on a double Decker bus! Ÿ A Champagne cork leaves the bottle at a velocity of around 38-40 mph, but can be as fast as 100 mph! Ÿ Legend has it that Marilyn Monroe once had a bath in Champagne. It supposedly took 350 bottles to fill the bath tub. (Do try this at home!). Ÿ My favourite: By the law of averages, you are more likely to be killed by a flying Champagne cork than by a poisonous spider!!

Healthy Tips

If there is not enough magnesium to do this job, both insulin and glucose become elevated. The excess glucose gets stored as fat and contributes to obesity. Magnesium can neutralize the effects of stress and reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) signals in the body that shutdown the metabolism and make weight loss almost impossible.

TIP: Magnesium improves digestion, reduces the effects of stress on your body and eliminates constipation.

What is the importance of zinc? – There are lots of benefits of taking zinc, from improved performance and strength to lowering cholesterol and inflammation. Symptoms of low zinc can be cravings for salty or sweet foods. Additional zinc in the diet is believed to help control appetite and aid weight loss. Low zinc levels may even impair your ability to exercise, an important part of any weight loss program.

TIP: Zinc reduces unhealthy food cravings.

Does vitamin D3 make a difference? – Yes it does: An adequate level of vitamin D is known to help with blood sugar regulation, increase insulin production and reduce insulin resistance. Several studies suggest there is a link between low levels of vitamin D and basic cognitive functions and depression, which is important when mood affects your ability to stick to a weight loss plan. With the right amounts of vitamin D you will be more likely to be in the mood for exercise. Your body also needs vitamin D for leptin production which is the hormone that tells your brain that you’re full.

If you feel full you are less likely to overeat.

TIP: Vitamin D3 improves your blood sugar regulation What do probiotics do? - Good quality probiotics play an important part in gut health. They directly affect nutrient absorption and lower chronic inflammation. If your gut is unhealthy, you will be more susceptible to stress and anxiety, which can lead to the release of stress hormones, such as cortisol. Studies have shown that stressful events trigger cortisol and lead to the onset of chronic gastrointestinal disturbances. Stomach problems and elevated cortisol directly affect insulin health and lead to belly fat gain. Taking a probiotic can lower cortisol levels because it improves gut flora that affects the brain. There is an established link between stress, mood disorders, brain function and gastrointestinal disease.

A true survivor of several mass extinctions, they are still going strong around the world today. •So far we have identified 4,500 species and expect there are many more yet to be discovered. Some species are truly remarkable reproducers. A single female German Cockroach can live for 6 months and produce around 20,000 offspring in that time.

•Now I do not want to frighten you here, so let us put everything in proportion. Less than 30 species world wide are considered pests to man so remember, that actually leaves a huge number who aren't, in fact only 4 imported species are classified as a problem in the UK. •Around the world literally billions of cockroaches are busy recycling organic waste right now and some are even pollinators. They keep a massive amount of individual ecosystems healthy and are a hugely important source of food for loads of other vertebrate and invertebrate species.

Historically cockroaches were ground up into a powder or boiled as a tea then offered as 'cure all' medicines. Today instead, •you can pick up a tasty protein snack of fried cockroach in countries such as Cambodia. Contrary to popular myth, they can not survive a nuclear impact but they can tolerate a massively high level of radiation. Some can survive without eating for up to 6 weeks, some can even hold their breath for 40 minutes living a semi-aquatic life and yes, they can survive for over 1 whole week after being decapitated! They are fast too, •a sprint of 80cms per second has even been recorded.

My Animals and Other Family

Clare Balding Clare Balding’s prize winning autobiography covers the first twenty or so years of her life. It describes her growing up surrounded by dogs, horses and an eccentric family. Each chapter is named after an animal that was significant to her and her family at that particular time in her life.

To use her own words: “I had spent most of my childhood thinking I was a dog and I suspect I had aged in dog years. By the time that I was ten I had discovered the pain of unbearable loss. I had felt joy and jealousy. Most important of all I knew how to love and let myself be loved. All these things I learnt through animals. Horses and dogs were my family and my friends. This is their story as much as it is mine.”

Her school life was fun at times, traumatic and surprising at other times. She relates the difficulties of fitting in and choosing friends, making mistakes and putting things right again. A few surprises for the reader here, and a few chuckles.

Clare’s father was a very successful race horse trainer until his retirement, and as a result she grew up to be an outstanding horsewoman. At the age of two she is pictured on top of the Grand National winner Mill Reef. She eventually became a top amateur jockey herself, winning many races.

Clare Balding has been a familiar name to most of us for some years and is in fact often now referred to as a National Treasure. This, in my opinion, is thanks to her hard work, enthusiasm and the ability to entertain as well as commentate. She has been a presenter on radio and on many television programs. Her commentaries on the recent London Olympics were excellent and have made her a household name – they were enjoyable and informative whichever sport she was covering. She co-invented the Mobot, and who will ever forget seeing her introduce Bert to the nation – Unbelievable!!!!

My Animals and Other Family is funny, frank, surprising and interesting. The reader does not need to be horsey or be a dog lover to enjoy this memoir; it is simply a pleasure to read.

I am sure there is much more to be told and I hope Clare follows up with a continuation very soon.

Winter reds January, and February too, are funny months aren't they? There's kind of not much going on and the weather will most likely be keeping us feeling a bit miserable, in hope of signs of spring and perhaps a little sunshine. Maybe the little promise of spring bulbs peeping through the dark soil and some over winter vegetables may also be nearly ready for the taking.

Food needs to be warming and comforting too although after the indulgence of Christmas people are often thinking of being careful. But also wanting something to eat as a bit of a treat.

And with celebration dates like Valentines, lets think of something a little bit special!

I was supping some mulled wine over Christmas and I had a thought it would be lovely as a pudding, so here goes!

To make a mulled wine jelly pour a whole bottle of red wine in to a pan. Plump for a good full bodied one. Add the juice and zest from an orange, 1 cinnamon stick, 10 cloves and 200g soft light brown sugar. Split a vanilla pod, scraping out the seeds and add both to the wine too. Warm the wine then turn it off and leave to infuse for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, soak 7 leaves of gelatine in cold water until soft. Please don't ask me about powdered gelatine, I can never get on with it and don't understand it at all!!! Warm the wine up again then drop in the gelatine. It will dissolve easily but make sure you give it a little stir anyway! Cool then pour in to wine glasses and chill until set. This will be around 6 hours but is much better over night!

Whip 300ml cream, adding 50g icing sugar once thick and around 2 tbsp of your favourite liqueur then spoon on to the top of the jellies to serve.

There are thousands of expressions of malt whiskies available and they all taste different. One of the elements that has an influence is the type and quality of the barley used and, some would say, the ‘terroir’ it is grown in. This will subtly affect the production process (such as the amount of sugar available to ferment, how the esters form etc) and lead to the creation of different flavours and aromas.

For many years Golden Promise was the distillers barley of choice but varieties such as Optic are now far more widely used that, amongst other benefits, yield more spirit. Despite this, some distilleries continue to use Golden Promise as they believe that it gives more body and complexity to the spirit. Both Macallan and Glengoyne use a proportion of it to make their whisky (although the Glengoyne distillery manager would not divulge to me the exact proportion…) and Benromach distillery produced a batch of whisky made entirely from Golden Promise and, helpfully, also produced a batch made entirely from Optic barley. We stock both of these whiskies and they would make for an interesting ‘compare and contrast’ tasting.

There is also a growing movement in whisky distilling towards the use of both organic and locally grown barley.

These involve additional costs as local growing conditions can be very difficult. and organic whisky production requires stringent pre-cleaning of the equipment, but the distilleries obviously feel that the characteristics brought to the whisky make this worthwhile.

Jim McEwan of Bruichladdich speaks of the clean, pure taste of their Islay Barley 2006 (where the barley comes from a single farm on Islay), and I can certainly concur that there is a freshness to both the nose and palate that is quite delightful. Interestingly, Bruichladdich also produce an organic single malt and I find this to have a creaminess to both the nose and the mouth feel that I’ve not found in other whiskies, so again the subtle way in which the barley acts and reacts within the production process seems to be leading to a different type of spirit.

Various breeds of dogs and cats are prone to certain diseases of the heart, most of which, if detected early, can be successfully treated. Unlike skin or gastric conditions where the symptoms are easily identified at home, heart disease is not something a pet owner can easily see. Often heart problems will only be identified at your vet when the vet listens to your pet’s heart during an examination. A routine health check should always precede administration of the regular vaccination (“booster”).

This is another reason why the annual injections are very important! The symptoms you may notice at home with heart disease could include breathlessness, reduced energy, coughing or wheezing, and a swollen belly, which, if seen, may warrant a check up with the vet.

Diseases of the heart can include problems with the muscle of the heart, the valves within the heart and with the electrical conduction system that controls the way the heart beats. Some diseases are present from birth, and others can develop later in life. A vet may hear a ‘heart murmur’ in a young puppy or kitten, which could indicate an early heart defect. This is not necessarily bad news as sometimes these correct as the pet gets older. Whether detected early or late in life, your vet may want to investigate the cause of the murmur. This is to ensure that correct treatment can be initiated at the earliest opportunity. Investigations may include X-rays, blood tests, ultrasound scans of the heart and ECGs, which check the rhythm of the heart.

Many of the heart conditions can be treated with medications that help the heart work more efficiently. In very rare cases, an operation may also be needed. The medications are very similar to tablets human heart patients would take. Once diagnosed, regular checks with the vet will help ensure the treatment is successfully managing the heart condition and will allow for any appropriate changes to the medication to be made. Investigations and treatment into heart disease is covered on your pet insurance.

Obesity in pets, as much as in people, can put pressure on an otherwise healthy heart, which may lead to heart failure. Fat can build up around heart and lungs. This will cause the heart to work much harder. It is important to keep your pet’s weight at the ideal for his/her breed and age. If your pet gains too much weight, speak to your vet about how to reduce the weight safely.
