Branch Out from The Virtual Classroom At Loudoun Attractions In 2019, when Dan Kasabian and Amy Stuart opened Summit Ropes—the largest indoor ropes course in the U.S.—it was about more than giving their clients a fun, strenuous, physical adventure.

Modeled after Zion National Park, their Sterling facility has 120 obstacles in all, with kids having to scale high ladders and make split second decisions on which directions to go. While it’s excellent physical fitness, it also teaches teamwork, perseverance, responsibility and problem solving, Kasabian said. In other words—a learning experience.

“We have four boys and they were spending a lot of time on screens in a structured environment,” Kasabian said. “Structured school classroom, structured sports … we wanted to give them something unstructured, but also something that would be fun and make them responsible.”

For 20 years Great Country Farms in Bluemont has been offering students learning experiences that range from how honeybees pollinate plants to the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly. The farm is currently offering a sunflower picking program where kids bring their own clippers and make a bouquet.

Back in eastern Loudoun, the Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum is developing a free weekly after school “enrichment program”–instructor led classes that will take place between stations inside the museum and on the grounds that will focus on either Loudoun farming history or modern-day farming.

Or, take the classroom to the kitchen with a bake and make pizza kit from Wild Wood Pizza, located in the Village at Leesburg. The package comes with two dough balls and individual mini containers with various toppings.

“Your kids will get out of the house, you’ll get a much-needed break and you will all learn something,” said Kasabian, who opened Summit Ropes again in August after months of lockdown. “As a parent, health and safety come first and we disinfect regularly, but children also 4

Sipping & Learning Downtown at Echelon Wine Bar

Henkle couldn’t figure out why A imee Leesburg’s bustling downtown in the

heart of Loudoun’s wine country didn’t have a dedicated wine bar.

“There was no wine in Leesburg—it’s all beer,” Henkle said. “Leesburg to me is the gateway to DC’s wine country. ... There are 45 wineries in Loudoun County, and most people have to come through Leesburg to get to these areas.”

Henkle and her husband, Todd, the owners of The Vineyards & Winery at Lost Creek north of Leesburg, decided to fix that. The couple opened Echelon Wine Bar on King Street earlier this summer, a showcase for Lost Creek wines and cool grower-produced bottles from all over the world. The wine bar is located in a portion of the basement of the building that used to be home to the Leesburg Antique Emporium.

The Henkles got the project rolling two years ago and initially explored the idea of an in-town tasting room for their Loudoun-made wines— inspired by practices from the West Coast.

“If you go to California or Oregon, the vineyards are out in the countryside, so to get in front of more people, they’ll do tasting rooms in the more urban areas,” Henkle said. “We’ve been watching Leesburg really starting to flourish.”

The concept evolved into a full-on wine bar with 100 bottles from across the world and more than 30 wines by the glass. Echelon also features wine-friendly small plate dishes from Chef Landon Barnes, who also runs the culinary operations at Lost Creek.

For Aimee, Echelon’s wine director, the decision to move away from a Lost Creek tasting room grew from a sense of exploration and a desire to showcase Loudoun wines in the context of great wines from across the country and world.

“What I really like to talk about and teach with is what our wines look like in the context of the world,” she said. “When you can showcase these great local wines right alongside that French rosé, or right alongside something fun like a Spanish Albarino, it’s very eye opening for people I think and that’s what makes it a lot of fun.”

Henkle has carefully curated Echelon’s wine list with a focus on independent winemakers around the globe.

“We wanted producers that were like us, like Lost Creek. Small, focused on sustainable farming, natural winemaking techniques, that are family owned, boutique,” Henkle said. “There are so many opportunities to find neat wines you wouldn’t have heard of or tried.”

The Henkles also wanted to create a space where consumers could learn about wine and where the region’s growing cadre of wine professionals and wine educators can get training without going into DC. Echelon already has a range of fun consumer-oriented sessions on the calendar and will also offer official Wine & Spirit Education Trust classes for wine pros, filling a big need for local training, Henkle said.

“We’re finding on the winery side that we have a lot more sophisticated wine drinkers coming out to our tasting rooms,” Henkle said. “By adding certification courses for our staff, it really does elevate the entire experience as a whole for anybody who’s coming out to the tasting rooms.”

Opening a wine bar during a global pandemic hasn’t been without bumps, Henkle said, but as Northern Virginia moves through Phase Three reopening, the word is getting out. Echelon was initially slated to open in early April, but COVIDrelated restrictions pushed the opening back to late June. The wine bar has been operating indoors only with reduced seating capacity. But Henkle said Leesburg’s plans to close down their block of King Street on Friday and Saturday evenings through late October will allow them to add some outdoor seating.

Aimee and Todd Henkle are both engineers with a long history in the tech sector. But a passion for wine has always been part of their lives together. The couple, who have been married for 22 years, connected over a shared passion for wine and took their honeymoon to the wine mecca of Bordeaux, France in 1998.

As Todd Henkle shifted gears from engineering to winemaking with some hardcore, on-the-job training, the couple hired a consultant for their first three vintages. Todd hit a home run with his first solo vintage in 2015: the Lost Creek 2015 Reserve Chardonnay earned Best in Class honors at the 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

The Henkles have also put a big emphasis on vineyard management over the past eight years, focusing on high-quality fruit and sustainable growing practices.

“We’re very focused on our vineyard quality.

We’re very focused on sustainability,” Aimee Henkle said. “We really believe that the vineyard is where the wine is made, and in the cellar we’re just kind of curators of that.”

This year’s vintage is looking good, Henkle said, despite damage from mid-May frosts that wreaked havoc on Loudoun’s agricultural landscape. Lost Creek lost around a third of its chardonnay harvest from that late frost. But a recent summer dry spell has brought endof-season optimism for a robust and flavorful vintage.

Henkle said support from fans and followers cultivated at Lost Creek over the past eight years has set Echelon off on a firm footing downtown—despite less than ideal circumstances. And summer street closures offer more positive news as Leesburg’s new wine bar carves out a niche.

“What did help us is that we have a strong presence in the community through Lost Creek,” she said. “There’s nothing else like it in downtown.”

“From the beginning of our relationship, wine’s always been there,” Henkle said.

The Henkles came to Loudoun in 2007 for technology jobs and started exploring the area’s burgeoning vineyard scene as wine lovers. For two scientists, the idea of running a winery was appealing, and when Lost Creek came up for sale in 2012, they jumped at the chance and hit

Culinary Power Couple Teams Up for Buford’s Biscuits

Years of combined culinary experiences, not to mention coupledom, have teamed up to bring a new dining concept to downtown Leesburg.

Charles Schech, who for almost two years has served as The Wine Kitchen’s general manager, is joining forces with partner Lauren Barrett to bring Buford’s Biscuits to life.

It’s been just about a lifetime spent in restaurants for Schech, who grew up working in his mother’s western Pennsylvania restaurant.

He has since worked in many corporate restaurant settings, with B.F. Saul, Hilton and Salamander Resort in Middleburg. Likewise, Barrett is no stranger to the food and beverage scene, most recently serving as the operations manager with Catoctin Creek Distillery in Purcellville and managing several restaurants over the course of her career.

business background to work, Schech said the two make a great team, in and out of the restaurant scene. The couple had discussed opening a restaurant together many times, but when the downtown Leesburg restaurant space became available—the former site of Señor Ramon Taqueria and, most recently, Balls of Glory—they jumped at the opportunity.

“Availability is quite rare in downtown Leesburg so when the opportunity came forward, we had to take it,” Schech said.

The two also see an opportunity in one of the culinary concepts not yet prevalent in the downtown area—good, old comfort food in the guise of Southern cooking.

“Downtown offers plenty of great dining options for dinner service, but we felt it could use a great breakfast and lunch option,” Schech said. “Southern fare will fill a void. We wanted

The Town of Leesburg has added a few new bells and whistles to its self-guided walking tour program. Now visitors can discover more of the town’s public art displays with the help of their smartphones.

Another tour provides visitors with information about the war memorials on the courthouse lawn.

The town launched its walking tour app 2017 with two historical tours of downtown—one covering historical sites generally and another putting the spotlight on the town’s Black history.

Viewers may follow along as they are guided from site to site or they may choose to turn on the GeoAlerts feature, which will alert them to when they are near a location included on the tour.

The new public art tour features 11 pieces of artwork at seven locations. The tour includes images, maps, and details of each site, which features the bike mural inside the Town Hall parking garage; ArtsPARKs at Raflo Park; and the Stanley Caulkins Memorial Bench on King Street, just to name a few. The tour will be updated to include additional public art pieces as they are installed.

A staple of any good Southern menu, of course, is fried chicken.

“Lauren makes amazing fried chicken,” Schech said proudly. They plan to serve their food in pie tins, the chicken complemented by coleslaw, with apple chutney on top and a poached egg.

The pie tin will serve as the perfect plate to allow guests to sop up all the liquid goodness.

Schech is the man behind the biscuits, which, of course, will be freshly made.

The restaurant is named in homage to Barrett’s father, who is affectionately known as Buff.

He’s the type of guy that can make friends with strangers in a grocery store and leave the store with plans for that evening, Schech said. The duo hopes the venture elicits that same kind of warm, friendly atmosphere.

It will be hard to leave the comfort of The Wine Kitchen and the leadership of restaurant owner Jason Miller, Schech acknowledged, but they plan to take all they have learned from Miller and use it to make Buford’s successful. The two have both worked for Miller and it was Barrett who recommended Schech for the general manager gig. “[Miller’s] leadership has instilled in us how a restaurant should be run and managed using locally sourced food and giving guests a great experience,” Schech said.

Schech and Barrett opened Buford’s in midAugust, after completing a remolding of the space.

“We didn’t want to open if it’s not perfect and what we think is perfect. We want it to be great from the beginning,” Schech said.

MORVEN PARK Morven Park is a 1,000-acre historic estate on the edge of Leesburg that was home to Virginia governor and agricultural pioneer Westmoreland Davis. Tours of the Greek Revival mansion include 16th century Belgian tapestries, Spanish cassones, hundreds of silver pieces, Hudson River Valley paintings, and Asian treasures. The estate also features the Winmill Carriage Museum, the Museum of Hounds and Hunting of North America, formal boxwood gardens, miles of hiking and riding trails, and athletic fields.

OATLANDS HISTORIC HOUSE & GARDENS The 415-acre Oatlands estate, owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, offers tours of the historic mansion, extensive gardens and outbuildings that include the oldest standing greenhouse in the South. Exhibits focus on the lives of the Carter and Eustis families who building the estate, as well as the lives of enslaved people who lived and worked there.
