Republika Dominikańska to nie tylko rajskie plaże i kurorty all inclusive choć kojarzy się przede wszystkim z nieziemskimi, pokrytymi białym piaskiem plażami, dominikana jest drugim po kubie najludniejszym państwem karaibów, a wyspę haiti (dawniej zwaną hispaniolą), na której leży, zamieszkuje ponad 20 mln ludzi. nic dziwnego, bo była miejscem wydarzeń, które zmieniły bieg historii. to właśnie do hispanioli dotarli pierwsi europejczycy pod dowództwem krzysztofa kolumba. Położona ok. 40 km na zachód od Puerto Platy (największe miasto północnego wybrzeża) la isabela była pierwszą europejską osadą na kontynencie amerykańskim, powstałą w 1493 r., założoną oso-

There is more to the Dominican Republic than idyllic beaches and all-inclusive resorts. The country has a long and fascinating history and its natural beauty is priceless.

Although the Dominican Republic primarily calls to mind unearthly, white sand beaches, it is also the second most populous country in the Caribbean after Cuba, and the island of Hispaniola on which it is located is inhabited by over 20 million people. This is hardly surprising, as the island has played host to several events that have changed the course of the history. It was on Hispaniola that the first Europeans, under the command of Christopher Columbus, arrived. Located about 40 km west of Puerto Plata, La Isabela was the first European settlement in the Americas. Today, in La Isabela, you can visit the Historical Park with the remains of the settlement, and the colonial district of Santo Domingo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The tourist centres of the Dominican Republic are located on the coast, which has no end of spectacular beaches, including those in Puerto Plata or Punta Cana, but the interior of the country is mountainous and diverse. The highest peak, Pico Duarte, is 3101 metres above sea level and has no equal in the Caribbean. There are also 16 national parks in the country, protecting such diverse environments as tropical forests, mangroves, caves, underground lagoons, coral reefs, savannahs and swamps. And let's not forget salt lakes, waterfalls and dozens of pristine coastal islands - staying on the beach is negligence considering all this wealth.

3. Na Dominikanie występuje wiele endemicznych gatunków ptaków, m.in. piękna, zielona konura oliwkowa. There are many endemic species of birds in the Dominican Republic, including the beautiful green olive-throated conure.
