THERE’S a music festival for just about everyone… for the rockers, for the doof loving dancers, for the beardy hipsters, for those enthused by blues, and blends of all the above, but what about the kiddos? Huh? WHEN-OH-WHEN will Mum and Dad stop dragging you to the gag-inducing cheesiness of regular kids’ concerts and take you to a gig with some decent TUNES?! The Kyneton Music Festival is one such fest that caters for all, including the youngsters. Sunday, March 2, family friendly garage punk band: Itchy Scabs and DJ Monkey Fuzz will be playing songs full of robots and dinosaurs and good stuff. They bring their set to life with stunts, motorbikes, pogo sticks and other such shenanigans.

(Grown ups secretly wish for this stuff in our 18+ gigs too.)

OH BOY… here it comes. As much as we like to embrace March like a bonus month of glorious sunshiny summer, those golden days of blue skies and bare skin are slipping though our fingers folks. (WAAAHH!) If you’re a local, you know what’s coming, and there are only three things to do about it, 1. Move to Queensland (it’s a tempting option by August). 2. Do Yoga to invite the sunshine into your soul, or 3. Move to Queensland (It’s a tempting option by… sorry.)

CHILLOUT is the biggest and longest running GLBTI festival in regional Australia, and it’s held right here in Daylesford.

Yay! Each Labour Day long weekend visitors from all over the country roll into town to get their collective rainbow on.

This year ChillOut will be held Friday, March 7, ‘til Monday, March 10. The program is full to splitting-at-the-staples with more than 30 events held across the long weekend. Each year, ChillOut raises funds for a local community group, and this year they have developed the Roz Moynihan Worthy Cause to assist a youth development program, so if you see a tin shaking, dig deep ploise!

The old faves are all back, like the Slowest Lunch (at The Argus Dining Room on Friday), the ChillOut Bush Dance at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) on Saturday night, and the Dance Party at the Town Hall on Sunday night. CREAM at the Old Hepburn Hotel (263 Main Road, Hepburn) from 4pm Saturday, and of course pre-CREAM, think: cocktails, jugs of chilled sangria and beats under the trees at the Hepburn Pavilion Café (Mineral Springs Reserve,) from 11am-4pm. (So yay!!) Of course the ChillOut Street Parade is on Sunday morn from 10:30 (find your pozzy on Vincent St from 10) This year’s theme is Superheroes and Villains, and it’s followed by the Carnival Day at Victoria Park, a day of music, food, stalls and fun for all.

The ChillOut ’14 program is chockers with bands and gigs galore and comedy and workshops and film and cabaret and sooo much food and sooo many cocktails to be had. Phew!

There’s a massive roller derby bout at The ARC (Smith Street) on Saturday from 2pm, but if that’s a little too energetic for your chilled out vibe there are plenty of day spas (of course) with all manner of divine treatments to soothe your danceweary bod and get you up and at ‘em for more. Open up and say aaaaart

THERE’S something about this region that beckons artists to live here and create. It could be the endless sky. Perhaps it’s the fresh air and peace? Perhaps it’s the blend of old and new, rural and village, feeling quietly close to the earth and living the seasons? Perhaps it’s just the super coffee our local baristas conjure from locally roasted beans? Yes. Most definitely all that… (plus a little bit of magic and quite a lot of said coffee).

Two years ago Castlemaine hosted an event to showcase the incredible artists living in the region. The Arts Open was such a success that they plan to roll it our biennially. This year the Arts Open weekend will be held across the Labour Day weekend (Saturday, March 8, ‘til Monday, March 10.) This celebration of local artists includes a weekend program of open studios, talks, workshops and a Gala Ball.

The Ball will be held Saturday, March 8, (from 7:30pm) at the Theatre Royal Castlemaine (30 Hargraves St). Enjoy dinner and canapés, music, dancing and fun. This delicious Parisian Demi-monde evening, will be hosted by cheeky Chanteuse Madame Leila Leontine. Tickets $70.

Across the weekend over 70 local artists will showcase their works at over 40 studios and galleries. The Castlemaine Visitor Information Centre (44 Mostyn Street) will be the hub for the weekend, exhibiting a selection of works by Arts Open artists. From here, pick up a map of studios and head off on a country drive to meet the artists in their inner sanctuaries.

An artist’s studio is usually a private creative space, so this rare opportunity is an honour for those wishing to hear and learn from, and be inspired by the artists themselves.

Have a chat, discuss finished works and perhaps even take a sneak peak at works in progress. The Arts Open will feature printmakers, sculptors, jewellers, painters, photographers, ceramicists and more. It’s so SO massive with eleventykabillion amazing events crammed into four days... we could actually space them across the entire month of March and you’d still have to clone yourself to cram them all in. So, as much as we’d love to tell you about it all, alas, we are but a teeny tiny magazine, not September Vogue, so we’ll just share this little event we’re a bit mad about. High Tea on the Line is an afternoon of tea, cheeky bubbles and scrumptious morsels aboard a restored train, on Saturday, March 8. WELL HELLO Dolly! Again! The very fabulous Dolly Diamond returns to Daylesford for her tenth ChillOut in an exclusive VIP event Saturday, March 8. Dolly has a legion of loving fans so it’ll be a bun fight to get your well manicured mitts on tickets for her 10th Anniversary Show to be held at Grange Bellinzona (77 Main Road, Hepburn Springs).

THE average human spends not a whole lot of brain hours pondering the humble worm. Don’t feel bad about it, worms don’t think about you either. When they check their little subterranean Facebook accounts (which, incidentally, is probably not called ‘Facebook’, because they don’t have faces, nor books, nor even eyes, making this task decidedly more difficult) Earthworms are not checking up on you, they’re posting pics of rad dirt on Instagram with cute filters hashtagging as they go. So now that you’re thinking worms, turn your mind to WORM FARMS, and how much you want one… lots huh? Trentham Neighbourhood Centre is hosting a Worm Farm course Sat, March 8, 2pm-3pm. Pulling some big heavy tractor love

YOU know what tractors do? They pull stuff. They pull stuff so well that there are ENTIRE EVENTS showcasing their awesome pulling-stuff prowess. You know what these events are called… Tractor Pulls. Yes. Can you get over it? We can’t even. Bullarto (just a few klicks from Daylesford) hosts an annual tractor pull, and it’s happening again Sunday, March 9. (10:30am-4pm, at the Bullarto Hall and Railway Grounds) Check out vintage and classic tractors, watch them pull heavy stuff. But it’s not just about the tractors, oh no… there’ll also be a display of perfectly polished restored vehicles and other demos, like sheep shearing and log chopping. As well as a phone throwing comp, and loads of tunes from the Daylesford Community Brass band, and the Daylesford Pipe and Drum band. Hello… bagpipes, logs, flying phones and mighty tractors… Best. OH MARCH. We’re a bit keen on you. You do this cute little ‘It’s still warm, I could still be summer’ thing, which we really love. But then you go from ‘I’m so hot right now’, to all bitter and cold. You’re like that Katy Perry Masterchef song.

Anyway, you know what we really love about you March?

Your lazy, sunny, Sunday afternoons. They feel like the last ones we’re going to get for a LONG time, and we plan on wallowing in them outdoors, with friends, fine ales, tunes and sunglasses (and a jacket, just in case). The Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves St, Castlemaine) hosts The Brickyard Sessions (outdoor concert series), every Sunday afternoon in the Brickyard out the back. It’s a tiered landscaped garden and bar, with great live bands to help you make the most of the sun before Autumn really shows us what she’s made of. Parades and Carnivals no time to chill!

LET’S face it, it’s technically a little difficult to actually chill out at ChillOut. With so much amazing stuff on around town, we recommend you wait until you’re back at your desk at work before you do the chilling out bit. (Shhh, we won’t tell your boss...) There’s just too much awesome stuff to do at the 2014 ChillOut Festival, but it’s okay, we think you’ll cope.

Two of the biggest events on the ChillOut calendar are the much loved ChillOut Street Parade and Carnival Day on Sunday, March 9. From 10am, hundreds of happy peeps line Vincent Street Daylesford, and the balconies above to watch the big parade. This year’s theme is Superheroes and Villains.

Prepare for capes and costumes and masks and laughs as the bikes and floats and boas and rainbows sashay and strut, roar and ride up and down Vincent Street from 10:30am.

Afterwards, head to Victoria Park for the ChillOut Carnival Day. It’s a brilliant celebration and super-fun day out for all. Wander the market, indulge in the finest local food and wine, and kick back and watch the bands on the big stage.

This year the line-up is massive with Ella Hooper, 100% Kylie, Victoriana Gaye, Nicolette Forte and her band, Drag Kings, and Luke Gallagher and Dolly Diamond. There are carnival rides and roving performers, including the Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus and Youth Chorus. Bring your precious pooch along and pop them into the Dog Show. You could win some fabbo prizes and much coveted doggie glory.

Now there is a chance to chill at Carnival Day, (between dancing, tasting, perving and playing…) Pull up a bale of hay to take a load off, or hire a beanbag to kick back on with a few friends and share a few wines and a few ChillOut stories. Beanbags are $10, remember to book yours ahead if you book your Carnival Day tix online. The Street Parade is a free event. Carnival Day is $22.50 GA, $17.50 Conc. YOU know that moment when you’re seeing a band and you don’t really know what they’re like and they turn out to be completely awesome and knock your socks off?

Oh Pep totally do that. Oh Pep are Melbourne folky poppy pals Olivia Hally (guitar and vocals) and Pepita Emmerichs (fiddle and mandolin) and usually they have the backup of a couple of buddies on double bass and drums. They’ve had lotsa lovely airplay all over 3RRR, PBS, Triple J and the likes, and have festivalled it up all over the shop.

Oh Pep shall be playing as a duo at the Old Glenlyon General Store, (63 Barkly Street) Friday, March 14, 6:30-8:30pm. Be sure to wear tight fitting socks as loose socks will surely be knocked off. WE LOVE mineral water. Tasty, bubbly, minerally goodness from the ground. It’s delish, and flows freely from vast underground aquifers, popping up all over the place around this region. Some are delicate and sweet, some have a minerally tang, and some are well… let’s be honest, a little bit stinky. As part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, Slow Food (Central Highlands) is hosting a ‘Slow Water’ tour, Saturday, March 15, from Sailors Falls Mineral Springs (Ballan-Daylesford Road, Sailors Falls) 1pm-4:30pm. Meet at the falls and then take a self guided water tour, visiting four mineral springs, tasting as you go. Pick a perfect spot in the forest for your picnic (a picnic lunch is provided, loaded with local gourmet deliciousness). YOU know a meal was good when you still talk about it days later. Last year at the Regional World’s Longest Lunch, a dessert was created - so magnificent, that TWELVE MONTHS LATER the lucky ones who indulged in the round ball of deliciousness are STILL talking about it, (and we, *pinky promise* are not even exaggerating).

The Regional World’s Longest Lunch is an annual event that happens as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

All around the state, days are written off as diners indulge in long luscious lunches, showcasing local produce and celebrating the clever chefs who spoil us with their food wizardry.

This year our region’s World’s Longest Lunch will be held under the shade of the magnificent old trees at the Hepburn Mineral Springs Reserve (Hepburn Springs) on Friday, March 14. (Hellooo… quick, grab the diary and write that afternoon off right now!) The region’s most talented chefs (and boy do we have a few…) are devising masterful menus as we go to print, and the wineries around us have been put on notice that their finest vintages will be required by the case-load on the day.

Chefs from Mercato, The Argus Dining Room, Verde Provedore and The Grande will be delivering the deliciousness on a grand scale, and The Daylesford Hotel is planning a wine list of the finest wines from our super cool climate wineries to match the food to perfection.

The Regional World’s Longest Lunch runs from midday ‘til 4pm. (Seriously, have you not blocked that time out in your diary yet?) LIKE A species of hyperactive bowerbirds us human types are just a little bit attracted to sparkly things. There aren’t too many of us who don’t like something a little bit shiny, a little bit flashy, a little bit blingy, a little bit sparkly.

In celebration of all things sparkling Ellender Estate Winery (260 Green Gully Road, Glenlyon) is hosting a night of deliciously flashy sparkly goodness.

Sparkling Water Sparkling Wine is an evening of fine sparkling wine, exquisite food, and divine local sparkling mineral water, held as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

Saturday, March 15, you are invited to raid your wardrobes for your most sparkling attire, (go crazy with the sequins, glitter and diamantes) and unleash your inner sparkle for an evening of bubbles and gastronomic delights. To celebrate the theme, Ellenders have created a bubbly cocktail to get the party started. Kyneton’s Piper St. Food Co. will serve delicious morsels, perfectly matched with wonderful sparkling wines from Ellender Estate and Chanters Ridge wineries. Someone dressed in their sparkly finery will win a prize (our guess is that it’ll be something bubbly).

Squelchy Squeegees squishing in Clunes

ONCE upon a time, someone invented the Squeegee. And then, even more ingeniously, they called it a Squeegee.

Possibly one of the greatest words ever, a squeegee squidges printing ink across a screen to create a screenprint. So technically, by our reckoning, screen prints could be called squeegeprints. Which we think would be a bit awesome.

If you’ve never tried your hand at screen printing, nor pulled the squeegee across a silk screen whilst inhaling nose-haircurling printers’ ink, you’ve missed something special. Luckily for you, Clunes Neighbourhood House is offering a Design, Print and Make course for those curious about the world of squeegees and screens.

Held over three weekends, these three half day workshops will inspire you to create something a bit spesh.

The first session (Saturday, March 15, 1pm – 4pm) is a design session. Learn how to design something appropriate for screening. Bring along something you’re working on or draw something new on the day. Cost $30.

Week two, (Saturday, March 22, 1pm – 4pm) it’s squeegee day! Screen print your motif onto fabric. You’ll also have the chance to do some stencil printing and stamping. Cost $35.

In the final session, (Saturday, March 29, 1pm-4pm) use your newly printed designs to create something new. Sew your screen print onto a bag, a cushion, an item of clothing, a wall hanging or whatever. Yay you - you superstar creative screen printer you!

The tricky catch with doing a course like this is that you will thereby be addicted to screenprinting and will want to make more more more… Which is great, for all of us, if you start a stall or something… hint hint… This course needs people to register and book before it can go ahead, so get a crew of creative pals together and join the Squeegee Squad. YES it was a hot summer. No it didn’t rain much, and yet… the local vegie patches and fruit trees still produced a superb harvest of superduper stuff. Indeed, we have clever dirt in the Central Highlands. The folk of Glenlyon host a monthly village market, where they sell the delicious excesses of their bumper crops. Saturday, March 15, hit the Glenlyon Shire Hall (Barkly Street) and buy just-picked bunches and bags of backyard bounty from the locals. Some kitchen-clever Glenlyonians have produced preserves, jams and pickles, biscuits, cakes, pastries and olive oils. We even hear there are to-die-for donuts made to order (if all that fresh green stuff seems a little too healthy-hard-core for a Saturday morning). SOMEONE should seriously make a reality show about chooks. Scenario: A bunch of random chickens are forced to live together in a hen house, (sure, let’s make it on the Gold Coast). They have to figure out their pecking order… it won’t take too long and someone will eventually be the bossiest and rule the roost. They have to take turns in the diary room/ nesting box, and if they eat too much of the good stuff in the garden they’ll probably be voted out. Let’s face it, that show would be better with chooks. If you think you’d like to make chickens a reality in your backyard, but would like to know a little more about chooks before you commit to a lifetime of eggs, Creswick Neighbourhood Centre (19-21 Victoria St) is hosting a Chookwise info session Sunday, March 16, 10:30am-4:30pm. Peace, kindness, and facepainting

DAYLESFORD is home to Australia’s only Dharma School. The first school in Australia to offer a primary curriculum based on Buddhist principles. There are only three schools like this in the world, (yeah, wow, go Daylesford!) and the school community is well loved and respected by all in town.

Each year the Dharma School celebrates the Autumn harvest and equinox with their Autumn Equinox Fair. The Fair raises funds for the school and is a super-fun day out for all.

The Autumn Equinox Fair will be held on the school grounds Sunday, March 23, 11am ‘til 3pm at 11 Perrins Street, Daylesford.

The Fair showcases the school community, and includes loads of fun (and cheap!) activities for all.

The kids can try their hands at origami, archery and make little creatures in the sandpit. And where would a school fair be without facepainting? – Oh yes, there will most definitely be awesome facepainting.

The day promises to be a musical one with free entertainment all day, with local musos and performers playing and doing their thing. Just hanging out aboard the ARC

IF YOU have a high school aged human (or humans) in your family you’ll know that they like to hang-out-and-do-nothing with other high school aged humans. Hanging-out-anddoing-nothing is awesome as it isn’t doing homework, chores, or hanging out with your little brother or sister, which is usually worse than doing nothing.

In Daylesford, The ARC (next door to Daylesford Secondary College, 39 Smith Street) is a huge space that regularly hosts stuff like Basketball, Squash, Circus, Netball, Volleyball, even Roller Derby and now they’ve kitted out a space at the ARC dedicated to specialised hanging out activities.

The ARC Youth Space is open Monday to Friday 3:30pm – 5:30pm. Each night after school there will be different activities run by trained volunteers. It’s run by the Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre and all high school aged humans are welcome to make the space theirs. So this is the hangout timetable: Monday: Try your hand at creative writing/youth newspaper/ or just hang out and get a hand with your homework.

Tuesday: is Art Attack with Art with Heart… unleash the creative within.

Wednesday: is Games Night. Play video games, do roleplaying, or try some old-school board games.

Thursday is Girltalk. – A girls only hangout and talk about important stuff, or not so important stuff or paint your nails or do mad hair or whatever.

Friday it’s movies and 8 ball pool. Awesome way to end the week. The ARC Youth Space is on the look out for more volunteers and (of course) ideas from those who use the space. (Great chance to make it yours peeps.)

DARRAWEIT GUIM is a teeny tiny little town on the other side of the Macedon Ranges. In recent times it has popped up on our radar, for a good reason, aaand a not so good reason. Last month Darraweit Guim absolutely copped it in the fires, (clearly that’s the bad reason) and the good reason is, that super ace band Stonefield hail from the wee ‘hood of DG. Stonefield are four completely rockin sisters, raised on Hendrix and Zeppelin and fresh country air. They jammed in the farm shed, sent a tape into Triple J Unearthed and BAM suddenly they’re playing all over the globe. Last month the CFA saved that very shed that spawned their musical genius, and this month they are playing the Theatre Royal in Castlemaine, (30 Hargraves Street) Saturday, March 22.

We’re not really ready to think about the change of season thanks very much, but Ballan is. Ballan LOVES Autumn. They dig it so much they host an annual Autumn festival in its honour.

Sunday, March 23, Inglis Street will be closed to traffic so they can take the party to the streets. This year’s theme is Back to the Seventies, dig out the bell bottoms and disco pants and strut your 70s stuff with everyone else in town. There’ll be a grand parade, an art show and photographic exhibition, a pet show, the annual woodchop, stalls, music, dancing, food and fun stuff for all. SINCE we lived in caves we’ve been making stuff out of clay.

Can you imagine what it was like when the first humans found that first lump of squishy clay? “Oooh hello… this looks like a bit of fun – look kids! Brown Play Doh! – wait a minute, this could be useful…” The first person to tease a vessel out of a lump of mud would’ve been a bit proud of themselves wouldn’t they?… “No more eating salad off the floor, I’ve made us a salad bowl”. Brilliant. Fast forward oodles of years and here we are still playing with clay. And it’s just a bit excellent and oh-so-good for the soul.

Clayspace (the Daylesford Region Ceramics Cooperative) celebrates our connection with the earth through clay.

The Clayspace members are ceramic artists from around the region, sharing a common love of all things clay. Our town’s working artists share this communal space, and produce fine works of art in all shapes and forms.

This year, they are sharing their space with those who want to get their hands dirty, with Clay Classes and Social Clay Making groups. The Clay Classes include full tuition, and are suitable for those who want to learn the art of a particular style of clay making, like wheel throwing, slab construction, sculpting, or salad bowls. There are two sessions on Mondays: 10am-12pm, and 1pm-3pm. It’s $35 per session (clay, firing and glaze costs not included, however tools and invaluable years of knowledge is included for free!) NOW that Autumn is creeping in, and the trees are hinting at doing their annual leaf spectacular, our minds turn to cosy days of fog and moss and open fires and mittens and all that toasty stuff we love about Autumn in the Central Highlands.

Emma and Nigel love all that warm and fuzzy stuff about his part of the world as well, so much so, that they moved from Freo in Western Australia, and left their other lives in aviation and social services to live in our lovely ‘hood and open their wonderful little store Moss and Burrows (22 Raglan Street Daylesford, next to the Sunday Market).

Emma and Nigel are champions for local designers and makers and stock some ace stuff from Rose St Market faves Nowhere Creek, as well as Tightology Tights, Harlequin Belle, hand-printed Northwood clothing, and international labels: Saltwater Sandals for kiddos and grownups, super awesome Minnetonka suede shoes and American Apparel, La Mav Australian organic skin care products, as well as vintage bits and bobs and other crafty, homey, lovely gorgeousness.

Moss and Burrows opened their bright blue door in December and have kitted out the old building with vintage cupboards and shelves, complimenting the worn-in-ness of the space, as well as some fab locally-made bent wood shelving, and it’s all (pretty much) for sale. (Just ask!) Moss and Burrows plan to host regular craft workshop afternoons, lead by clever creative types. Last month they held a Sip and Make Workshop and made macramé/crochet necklaces over a few champagnes with friends. (Does craft get better than this?)

Watch out for their next workshop soon, they’ll post details on Facebook when it’s all organised.

In keeping with the local crafty goodness, they invite their fave local designers to create their window displays, so make sure you take a peek when you’re up that neck of the woods.
