THE GLENLYON General Store is a pretty awesome establishment. Tucked into the bend in the road (63 Barkly Street) in the tiny town of Glenlyon, the General serves great food and sells fab local produce, it is toasty warm with open fires on cold days, great coffee and local wines. All this is awesome enough… but each and every Friday night the General serves up free live music from 6:30-8:30pm. And the bands aren’t just the blokes from down the road who know three chords and like to do covers… Ohh nooo. The General serves up outstanding live music. Bands that have played major festivals, international acts and exciting and awesome locals who have played the world over. Friday, April 4, is no exception as Van and Cal Walker do a stripped back acoustic set including tunes from Van’s five solo albums. THE THEATRE Royal in Castlemaine has a magic wand tucked under one of the theatre seats, we are almost certain. Their magic wand is surely supercharged up with rock n roll fairy dust - because month after month they book some of the biggest bands in Australia (and around the planet) to play their humble stage. This month the magic wand has been twirling up a rock n roll storm with Tex Perkins and Charlie Owen taking the stage together (minus sparkles and fairy dust): Friday, April 4. (Dinner and show $74 from 7pm, show only $39, 8pm.) At the other end of the month, Sunday, April 27, (with zero sparkles attached and only dust from the paddock) are legends Cosmic Psychos (actually for real) with Sun God Replica and She’s a Goer supporting. ART AND CULTURE feeds your soul. As creative people we need to nurture and feed our inner-selves to continue to grow and be inspired. Petrus Spronk is a well loved local artist who will be dishing out the inspirational creative soul food Saturday, April 5, 5pm at Clayspace (Door 3 complex East Street, Daylesford). Petrus will present a series of images of van Gogh paintings on the big screen. We hear that the story of how he came to be able to photograph these works is worth coming along for alone! Petrus will follow his talk with a screening of the film: 1 Giant Leap. This film follows the incredible journey of two English musicians who travelled the world with a laptop recording of a beat. They recorded different cultures’ musical responses to their beat.

The resulting music and discussions are riveting and magical.

a celebration at the Mill

SO YOU’VE got an historic, National Trust classified five storey bluestone flour mill in the middle of pretty-much nowhere… whatcha gonna do with it? Here’s an idea… Throw a festival in its honour… (of course!) The annual Anderson’s Mill Festival is now in its 20th year. This year the festival will be held on Sunday, April 6. It is a vibrant celebration of local food, wine and music, as well as showcasing this remarkable old building.

Anderson’s Mill was built after the gold rush, in 1861, on prime agricultural land. Back then, the region produced crops of grain and needed a mill to process the oats and wheat for flour. (Hello… all those hungry miners needed BREAD!) Anderson’s Mill was built in just six months and used water from Birch Creek to turn the giant water wheel.

On the day of the festival the waterwheel will turn again. It was once the only power source to run the massive mill, and seeing it run gives you a glimpse into a bygone era. (Hellooo power points and light switches anyone?… We’ve got it easy now huh?)

At the festival you can expect a delicious and eclectic mix of local produce, latest vintages from four Victorian boutique wineries, loads of live and local music, arts and crafts and more. Enjoy lunching on a local delicacy: fresh trout rolls, spicy Italian bullboar sausages, or organic vegie burgers.

Sample home made tapinades and olive oils, sauces and relishes. Try a hand churned ice cream, local bikkies, cakes and slices, breads and pastries (yes, we think it’s best you arrive hungry).

Take your time to stroll through the historic park, take a tour of the mill and experience this unique space.

Anderson’s Mill is located at Smeaton (roughly half way between Daylesford and Clunes). The festival kicks off from 10am and finishes at 5pm. Anderson’s Mill is a Parks Victoria site and as such no dogs are allowed at the festival.

Daylight Saving RIP

THE END of Daylight Saving is like when Patrick died on Offspring. It is hell. It is miserable and bleak. It is the worst. It makes you grumpy and sad and has you wanting to eat entire tubs of Maggie Beer icecream BY YOURSELF. NOT SHARING. The end of Daylight Saving signals the VERY END of anything remotely summery, and the coming of the winter and all the wintery stuff winter brings. Sure it’s actually midway through Autumn, but once the death knell rings for Daylight Saving it’s time to pack away the singlets and break out the polar fleece. Daylight Saving is whisked from us by a cruel time thief in the early hours of Sunday, April 6. Turn your clocks back one hour (technically at 3am… but as if you’re waiting up for that one) just do it before you go to sleep, and then roll over and cry into your pillow and think of Patrick and summers to come. Waaaah. RIP Daylight Saving. We miss you already.

A golden opportunity

IT’S NO secret there’s gold in them-thar-hills. The dirt under our feet no doubt contains some sweet shiny rocks. This region is also home to the Wombat State Forest, home to a diverse range of native plants and animals, including several rare species. It’s a significant water catchment area, giving rise to six rivers. The forest is loved for its beauty and wealth of happy creatures. A gold mine is currently proposed for Wombat Forest. The Wombat Forestcare Group is opposed to it and is hosting a Family Day to raise money and awareness to help stop the mine. The Family Day will be held at Bodhidharma (971 Basalt Rd, Shepherds Flat) Sunday, April 6, 11am – 4pm. BYO picnic and enjoy a day of music and fun. The Good, the Bad and the delicious

WHEN IT comes to pizza there’s the good, the bad and the ugly. The ‘good’ is the wood fired-homemadey pizza, with highly edible super-delish stuff on top. The ‘bad’ includes any pizza with indistinguishable generic ingredients, an Exxon Valdez style oil slick, or, enough cheese to construct a 1:1 scale replica of Uluru. The ‘ugly’ is pretty much anything still in the fridge the next day.

In Clunes they’re into pizza. The good stuff. And the word on the street is all about the Clunes Pizza Sessions hosted by Clunes Neighbourhood House. Local chef Joe Perse creates pizza wonders to share with friends on the first Tuesday of each month at the Town Hall. This month they’re hosting an extra special school holiday pizza lunch: Tuesday, April 8, in the Supper Room at Clunes Town Hall, (98 Bailey St) 12pm-1:30pm. Cost $5. Bookings essential 5345 4078.

Creepy Crawlies

THE LOCAL fauna is pretty visible. Not that you’ll see a wallaby in a Hi-Vis vest and reflective pants bounding up the Midland Highway, but if you keep your eyes open you’ll see roos and wombats and koalas and possums out and about doing their thing. But how about the creeks and rivers? If you’ve never explored our local waterways you’ll be surprised which creatures call our creeks home. Zoologist Prue Simmons is hosting a series of fun and interactive Critters of the Creek sessions for kids aged 5+ at local libraries during the school holidays. Find out what a platypus eats, where freshwater shrimp live and what happens if our creeks stop flowing. Tues, April 8: Trentham Library 10:3011:30am and Daylesford Library 2-3pm.

Crawling through the Reyne

IF IT WAS your job to record a compilation soundtrack of quintessentially Australian sounds what do you think you’d put on the playlist? Probably a kookaburra? A bit of didge?

Cicadas? (well hello Captain Obvious… they’re a given…) and of course a bloke named James Reyne. James’ voice, words and tunes are nothing less than an iconic Australian sound.

James Reyne (and Australian Crawl) is the soundtrack to Summers past, roadtrips and big nights out. He is currently traversing the land on his A Crawl To Now tour, playing a songbook of favourite Crawl tunes and more recent solo crowd faves, and bringing the house down wherever he goes. Trainspotters anonymous

THOMAS The Tank Engine is solely responsible for the train obsession of approximately 75% of preschool aged kids. The other 25% are into Chuggington, so don’t worry, it all adds up to a 100% train obsessed childhood.

What is it about trains that fascinates us so as kids? They’re big, they’re loud, they go fast, you can ride on them… these are all completely valid reasons for why we love trains, but the number one undeniable explanation as to why kids dig trains is that their parents secretly love them too, and you never actually ‘grow out of’ your childhood train obsession.

This condition, (let’s call it OTD… Obsessive Train Disorder) is incurable and the only way to treat chronic OTD is to suck it up, and proudly proclaim your train-love, buy yourself a train ticket and go for a ride. Toot toot!

During the school holidays the Victorian Goldfields Railway is hosting two days of Steam Trains for Parents Kids. Saturday, April 12, and Sunday, April 13, head to Maldon Train Station and partake in as much steam train action and fun as you can handle. There will be steam train rides to Castlemaine (departing at 10:30am, 12pm and 1:30pm) and other train shenanigans such as trolley rides, diesel rides, and a model railway. IF, by some strange chance you aren’t that into trains (hello… weirdo) there will also be other novelty rides, an animal farm, donkey rides and horse and cart rides as well.

Steam Trains for Kids is a fab family day out and a great way to finish off the school hols. So get on board and support the Victorian Goldfields Railway and your (child’s) obsession with trains.

The Central Highlands’ Got Talent

NOT TO talk us up too much, but if the Central Highlands was on a reality dancing/singing show we reckon we could make Paula Abdul weep. The creativity this region nurtures is pretty astounding, and some of our best and brightest young musical stars will be bringin’ it to Kyneton in the MITCH Next Generation Autumn Concert. MITCH (Music In The Central Highlands) is an organisation that promotes fine music within our villages, and showcases the talents of our community in a series of concerts throughout the year. The Autumn Concert (Sunday, April 13,) will be held at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute (81 Mollison Street) from 2:30pm. The program features seven young artists on various instruments, performing classical and contemporary tunes.

OOH there are some tasty times to be had in Kyneton. The scrumptiousness is spreading from well-trodden foodie trail Piper Street – so much so, that the town is about to host its first ever Taste of Kyneton Food and Wine Festival. The gastronomical gorgeousness will be held Sunday, April 13 at The Kyneton Community Park (within the Botanic Gardens).

BYO picnic blankie, chairs and appetite, and meander the food stalls tasting as you go. Sample signature dishes from Kyneton’s hatted haunts and clever cafes, and sip savored drops from local wineries and breweries. There will be a local produce market, live music and stuff for the kiddos too.

100 Wombats

on mountain bikes

WOMBATS are cute, fuzzy, friendly little creatures. They like to sleep. They like to snuffle around and eat wombat treats. They look like they’d be fun to hang out with on the couch and watch a bit of telly. They don’t look like the kind of animal that a hard-core mountain bike endurance race would be named after… but in fact, they are. The Wombat 100 is a cross country MTB marathon held in the Wombat State Forest just out of Woodend. This year it will be held on Sunday, April 13. It’s a world class 100km marathon course. There’s also a 50km event, and an 18km loop track for kids under 16. (Even little kids are well catered for with a jumping castle and face painting.) The Wombat 100 will be held on the edge of the forest at Cammeray Waters (140 Taylor Road, Woodend.) Accommodation is available onsite.

137 Years

of Easter magic

GOOD STUFF happens at Easter. Holidays and chocolate are high up the list of our fave things in the history of like, ever, so let’s just say that Easter gets a good wrap from us. The town of Maldon loves Easter too. They celebrate it each year with an Easter Fair, and have done so for 137 years… (yeah, wow!) It all kicks off Thursday, April 17, at 7pm with the Great Aussie Scone Baking Comp (see below), then the lights are turned on Tarrengower Tower (aww pretty.) Over the four days there is dancing, a buskers comp, markets, quilts, crafts and art, and a much-loved town torchlight procession followed by dancing in the street. There’s a home-made billycart event, concerts and the grand Easter parade. And eggs. Easter eggs and more eggs. So many eggs. So much good stuff. SCONE recipes are more closely guarded than pin numbers and passwords. We don’t doubt that ASIO has many granny scone recipes in secret files under lock and key and 24 hour surveillance. If your lovely old Gran has a fail-safe, blockbuster scone recipe tucked up in her bun, it’s time you bribed Granny to give it to you so you can enter the Great Aussie Scone Bake Competition at the Maldon Easter Fair.

Thursday, April 17 at 7pm, the flour will fly. It’s time to whip on the apron and do it up scone-ninja-style and bake your best even, high rising, plump scone perfection for the judges.

HOW GOOD is Easter this year? Well… it’s always good, with all that chocolate flying around how can it not be? But this year is extra special… Easter is a late one with Good Friday falling on the 18th and ANZAC day the following Friday. By our reckoning, if you align the planets and suck up to your boss, you can take just three days annual leave and can end up with ten days off - in a row! Score! So, now that we’ve organised your Easter break, we think it’s only fair that you take us with you on your romantic escape to Fiji. Go on… we’ll buy you a Piña Colada?? …Please?

Now. If, by some cruel twist of fate you can’t wrangle the tenday-Easter-holiday-Fiji-extravaganza fear not! Even if your boss is as mean as Pontius Pilate with a wedgie and grumpily grants NO extra annual leave it’s ok, we still get a four day weekend and we’ll take that thanks very much. (Hot cross buns and Piña Coladas at your place instead?)

Each Easter, Trentham hosts the Easter Art and Craft Show.

It is a popular, high quality art show with hundreds of works entered and pieces available to purchase all weekend. Last year over 2000 people perused the works and many artists went home with fatter wallets. Happy days for all.

Artists and crafty artisans from all over the region enter their fine works with prizes awarded on Opening Night (Thursday, April 17, from 7:30pm). Everyone is welcome to the opening night awards ceremony. Works will be available for purchase from 7:30pm. (If you’re looking for something for your wall, opening night is the way to go to get first dibs on a piece you love.) Tickets are $15. This years’ judges are Mark Payne for the art category (formally of the Artist’s Muse) and Helen McRae for Craft (from Jargon in Trentham). The exhibition runs Friday, April 18 – Sunday, April 20, 10am-4pm and Monday, April 21, 10am-3pm. The exhibition will be held at the Trentham Mechanics Institute (High Street). IF YOU happen to be doing a spot of village hopping over the Easter break, make like a certain Mr. E. Bunny and hop over to Hepburn. This Easter, Portal 108 (at 108 Main Road Hepburn Springs) is hosting a very special pop up gallery and shop under their magnificent oak tree (which will be doing its Autumn thing) in their front yard.

Local sculptor, artist and stonemason Kaya Storm will be exhibiting and selling his work Friday, April 18, until Monday, April 21. Come along and meet the maker and chat to him about his beautiful pieces crafted from recycled timber, river stones and steel. Kaya creates unique pieces of all shapes and sizes, as well as furniture and homewares. THERE are loads of traditions upheld on Good Friday. Of course it’s a big day at church… kind of like, hello… very big. It’s also a big day at the Royal Children’s Hospital, and a big day at Fish and Chip shops all over the place. Whatever Good Friday traditions you and your favourite people get up to on Friday, April 18, here’s another good one to add to the list. The Victorian Goldfields Railway run a special wine and cheese steam train on Good Friday evening. The train departs from Maldon Station (off Hornsby Street) at 7pm, and travels to Castlemaine Station and back. Tickets are $48pp (First Class) and $38 (Economy), and include a gourmet cheese platter. Drinks are available at bar prices on board. (No BYO please.) AUTUMN is fungi season. Popping up through leaves and pine needles, forest undergrowth and neat dewy lawns are a myriad of ‘shrooms and toadies in every colour, shape and size imaginable. Some are delicious. Some are deadly. Some look like fairy homes, some look like bizarre alien life forms.

Fungi loves this part of the world, our cool damp autumns welcome an annual fungi explosion. And this year will be no exception.

Fungi expert Alison Pouliot is hosting several workshops throughout the region with a focus on identification, for participants to gain confidence when foraging for mushies.

Amongst the tasty varieties that pop up around here lurk dangerously poisonous species that can, (and have) killed foragers. The (appropriately named) Death Cap looks very similar to one of the favourite mushies on menus everywhere, and it grows in rural Victoria, so if you hope to forage for mushrooms this Autumn it is vital you know what you’re picking.

Saturday, April 19, Alison will be hosting a workshop entitled ‘Fungi – An Introduction to a Curious Kingdom’. Learn about major fungal groups, the ecology and history of fungi and hit the local forests to explore and search for interesting species. Many local fungi examples will be displayed and examined in this workshop, and tips for identification will be shared. Morning tea and notes will be provided. Sunday, April 20, Alison will delve deeper into the mysteries of mushies in the workshop ‘The Bizarre and the Beautiful – A Deeper Exploration of a Curious Kingdom’. Learn the major characteristics used to identify fungi in the field.

We will remember them

ANZAC Day is an important time for remembrance and reflection for most Australians. Quiet and reverent Dawn Services are held around the country to remember the brave Australians who served and lost their lives not only at Gallipoli, but in other wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations around the world. Each year the Mt Macedon Dawn Service attracts thousands of people to the Memorial Cross atop the mountain at day break. This year busses will transport those wishing to attend the service, (due to attendance numbers increasing over the years there is no longer enough parking up the top.) Busses will depart from Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Romsey, Lancefield, Macedon and Woodend. The bus is free but bookings are essential. Vicki Gaye and Jeff are partners at home on the couch and on the tour bus. They are well loved for their quirky musical combo of pop and folk with a bit of grunge mixed in for good measure. (Jeff is also a hugely talented visual artist - for those playing at home he worked with Mambo for years – you’d totally know his stuff.)

AS YOU know, The Harvest Festival showcases the best of the local stuff. Chef Michael de Jong is right into the low food miles, eating seasonally, eating local thing. He’s mad about it, (as we all are around here) so he’s hosting a very special Farmer’s Harvest Dinner at the Glenlyon Hall (Barkly Street) on Saturday, April 26, to show off the very best of the local harvest. His five course extravaganza will be created with ingredients grown no further than 30 kilometres from the hall. Nice one. Some fine vintages from Ellender Estate Winery (just down the road - of course) will be served with dinner, and we hear Michael’s buddy in the kitchen might even pop out to hit the piano with a few tunes to liven up the hall. The year of the Clydesdale

IN GENERAL, people are mad about horses. Even if you’re not a horsey person you’ll still have a flutter on The Cup or get excited when Australia’s going for Olympic gold in the Equestrian. (Then you think you know it all, and flaunt horsey terms such as ‘counter-canter’ and ‘fetlock’. Impressive huh?) Each year a special show is held at Camp Reserve (Forest Street, Castlemaine) for the big and the small of the equine world. The Feature Show will be held Sunday, April 27, from 10am-4pm. Come and see champion Clydesdales proudly parade their magnificent enormousness around the arena, followed by the opposite end of the scale, Shetland Ponies and Miniature Horses clip-clopping their pretty selves around for the judges. It’s a great day out for families (if you can bear the inevitable “Pleeeeeeese can I have a pony” for the rest of your life.) Tickets (at the gate) are $5 for Adults and $2 for kids over 6 years.
