Long-Term Care Residents Stand for Quality in Weld County

WELD COUNTY, CO — In recognition of the hundreds of residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities throughout Weld County, the Board of County Commissioners have proclaimed October as Weld County Long-Term Care Residents’ Rights Month.

As people age and move into the next phase of life, many things change.

However, one important thing does not: When moving into long-term care facilities, people retain their human and civil rights, also known as residents’ rights. Residents’ rights are guaranteed by the federal Nursing Home Reform Law, which requires nursing homes to care for residents in a manner that promotes and enhances the quality of life of each resident, ensuring dignity, choice and self-determination.

In Weld County, the residents’ rights of more than 850 individuals living in nine nursing homes and nearly 850 individuals residing in 26 assisted living facilities are promoted and protected by three Long-Term Care Ombudsman through the Department of Human Services’ Area Agency on Aging (AAA).

At Wednesday’s board meeting, staff from AAA were joined by some very special guests: three residents of Aladdin Assisted Living in Keenesburg, who came to celebrate the proclamation.

“Our Area Agency on Aging staff constantly show how far they will go to care for the good folks of our county, including you three wonderful ladies,” said Weld County Commissioner Coordinator Scott James, speaking to the residents in attendance. “I’m constantly inspired by the hard work of our team, and I’m honored you all were able to join us today. Thank you for helping us raise awareness of the importance of understanding and protecting the rights of all long-term care residents.”

Nationally, October is designated annually as Residents’ Rights Month

by Consumer Voice to honor residents living in long-term care facilities.

The theme for this year’s Residents’ Rights Month, “Stand for Quality,” emphasizes the importance of quality in all aspects of residents’ experiences, such as quality care, quality of life, quality services and quality choices.

This Day in History - November 6, 1991 Magic Johnson Announces He is HIV-Positive

On this day in 1991, basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson stuns the world by announcing

his sudden retirement from the Los Angeles Lakers, after testing positive for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. At the time, many Americans viewed AIDS as a gay white man’s disease. Johnson (1959- ), who is African American and heterosexual, was one of the first sports stars to go public about his HIV-positive status.

Revered as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, Johnson spent his entire 13-season NBA career with the Lakers, helping them to win five championships in the 1980s. The 6’9″ point guard, a native of Lansing, Michigan, was famous for his extraordinary passing skills, contagious smile and love of the game. In 1981, he signed a 25-year deal with the Lakers for $25 million, one of the NBA’s first over-the-top contracts.

Johnson, a three-time NBA “Most Valuable Player” and 12-time All-Star team member, didn’t completely hang up his basketball shoes after announcing his retirement in 1991. He was voted most valuable player of the 1992 NBA All-Star Game and played on the Olympic “Dream Team” (alongside Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Patrick Ewing) that won gold for the U.S. in Barcelona that summer. He briefly returned to the Lakers for the 1993-94 season as head coach and made a short-lived comeback as a Lakers player in the 1995-96 season.

Today, Johnson is a prominent spokesman for AIDS awareness and a successful businessman, earning millions from a range of ventures, including movie theaters and restaurants. He serves as an example of how a variety of drug treatments have transformed AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition for many people in the U.S. Still, some 25 years after the first AIDS cases were reported, 25 million people worldwide have died of AIDS and another 40 million have been infected with the virus.

Trump Signs Executive Order Cancelling Student Loan Debt for Disabled Veterans

By Andrew O’Reilly | Fox News President Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday that forgives all student loan debt for any permanently disabled U.S. military veterans.

The order, which Trump signed following a speech at the American Veterans National Convention in Louisville, Ky., also clears those eligible veterans from having to pay any federal income tax on the loans. Trump added that he is pressuring individual states to follow suit.

“The debt of these disabled veterans will be completely erased,” Trump said. “That’s hundreds of millions of dollars of student loans debt for our disabled veterans that will be completely erased.”

The memo Trump signed directs the government to develop an “expedited” process so veterans can have their federal student loan debt discharged “with minimal burdens.” Currently, just half of the roughly 50,000 disabled veterans who are qualified to have their federal student loan debt forgiven have received the benefit because of a burdensome application process.

Under the current process, disabled veterans can have their debt forgiven under a loan forgiveness program, called Total and Permanent Disability Discharge, or TPD, as long as they have a VA service-connected disability rating of 100 percent. As of July, however, only about 20 percent of the eligible pool of veterans had taken advantage of the program due to the complicated nature of the application and other factors.

Trump’s announcement comes days after the administration hired a longtime student loan industry executive to be the federal government’s top watchdog for the student loan market. Robert Cameron will serve as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s new student loan ombudsman, the bureau said Friday.

It’s a job designed to protect student loan borrowers from poor practices in the student loan industry and one of the few positions explicitly named in the Dodd-Frank Act, the law passed after the 2008 financial crisis that created the bureau. It’s considered the go-to office for borrowers who have complaints about their loans. Cameron most recently worked at the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, better known as FedLoan Servicing, as its head of compliance and risk mitigation.

PHEAA has been cited for poor industry practices, most notably for how it has handled the troubled Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, a program designed to allow student loan borrowers who work in public service jobs to get part of their loan balances forgiven.

The executive order also comes as student loan forgiveness has become a major talking point among the 2020 Democratic presidential primary candidates, with contenders like Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts pushing plans to completely wipe out student loan debt nationwide.

Currently, Americans hold around $1.6 trillion in student loan debt.
