National American Legion Recognizes Mark Kauffman for 50 Years of Continuous Service

Tyler Abbott, Commander of American Legion Post 180 in Keenesburg, presented Mark Kauffman with a Certificate of Recognition from the National American Legion Offices recognizing his 50 years of continuous service. Jerry Stark also received the honor but was not in attendance.

Over the years, Mark has continuously volunteered at all levels of the American Legion in Keenesburg and has left a great legacy to be followed by our younger legionnaires. Mark was recruited to the post in 1968. A big thank you from the community to Mark!

About sixty folks attended and many had nice things to say about Joe and the things that have been accomplished under his watch. Accompanied by his wife and son, Joe spent the evening visiting with the folks who wanted to share his retirement gathering.

All of Hudson’s previous and current Mayor’s were in attendance except for Ray Patch, who had a bad cold. Everyone was thankful he was not there.

The event was well coordinated and the food was great. I have never had dessert pizza before. Good job Hudson!

Morgan County Economic Development Corporation hosted State Senator Jerry Sonnenberg and House Representative Jon Becker at Zazzy Cafe in Fort Morgan

Senator Jerry Sonnenberg and House Representative Jon Becker attended a listening meeting at Zazzy Café in Fort Morgan at 6:30 am sponsored by the Morgan County Economic Development Corporation. This allowed the state house members to hold a meeting and still make it to Denver. A lot of frustration about the ability to get things accomplished because of the partisanship in place at the State House.

Concerns were expressed about how rural Colorado gets fair representation in today’s environment. Representative Becker is not running for reelection. A discussion concerning broad ban was had with many expressing opinions.

Way of the World

by Bob Grand Last Friday the state house politicians agreed on something, booting out Representative Steve Lebsock. The group felt his conduct was unacceptable. At least they made a decision. A hot button issue and the woman involved deserved their day, but one must ask what about the citizens of Colorado. Representatives can agree on this issue, what about education, health care and roads? Are they any less important? Perhaps not as hot a button issue. Should they be? What does it take to get them there?

The author attended a listening session in Morgan County with two Republican law makers and an educational forum up in Greeley with a Democratic representative.

These folks are bright and capable but the overriding issue I heard was the other side was unreasonable. Why is that?

The two party system in Colorado has corrupted to a self serving effort. The self being served is the body politic not the people of Colorado. I am afraid the Caucus system as we see it today continues that. I point to the Weld County Republican County Commissioner selection process, where in District 2, Scott James launched a campaign effort to unseat Commissioner Cozad. Subsequently Cozad withdrew from what would have been a very tough race. The “Party Establishment” could not let that go unchallenged after all it is “their party”. Enter a candidate that does not even live in the district. We will see what evolves. Both the Democrats and the Republicans are minorities at the state level. The control because they are organized. The unaffiliated, one day, will begin to organize and overthrow the artificial control that both parties exert.

Great Education Colorado is coordinating a ballot initiative,#93, to fix the school funding issue in Colorado. This is a bottom ups development effort developed and supported by 174 of the 178 school superintendents in Colorado. We will be covering this in the next few issues of the paper. If we cannot fix educational funding at the legislative level maybe we need to send a message that the people need to be mobilized.

The Weld County Commissioners have picked the Ad Hoc Committee to review the County Charter. Why does one feel that perhaps this group is not as representative as touted. More to follow.

Has anybody really looked at the Weld County Budgeting process? What should Weld County be responsible for? Is thinking proactively really only supposed to be used for Public Works Projects? Why doesn’t anybody ever ask?

Weld County Salmonella Investigation Update

WELD COUNTY, CO — The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment (WCDPHE) continues to investigate an outbreak of Salmonella illness at several locations in Weld County. The source of the outbreak is the Burrito Delight restaurant, which has voluntarily closed both of its locations in Fort Lupton and Dacono. It is still under investigation as to what is the specific source. Laboratory testing results of the employees will not be available until Monday. The investigation continues around possible food sources.

There are presently 12 confirmed Salmonella cases which occurred in February: 6 from two different catered events at Aims Community College; 4 from patrons who ate at the Fort Lupton Burrito Delight restaurant; and 2 from a private business that had another catered event. The restaurants are closed and the public is not at risk.

Symptoms of Salmonella illness include diarrhea, upset stomach, fever, and occasionally vomiting. Symptoms typically last 4 to 7 days, and most people recover on their own. Anyone who continues to experience symptoms should contact their health care provider. For some people, the diarrhea may become so severe they require hospitalization. Symptoms typically appear 6-72 hours after eating contaminated food and will typically last for 4 to 7 days without treatment. However, in severe cases, the symptoms may last longer.

Aims Community College’s Radiologic Technology Program Receives a Patient Stretcher, X-ray Unit from UCHealth

GREELEY, CO – February 23, 2018 – Two donations from UCHealth are helping to set the stage for realistic training for radiologic technology students at Aims Community College.

The Radiologic Technology program recently received a Hill-Rom P8000 procedural stretcher donated from UCHealth to help Aims students simulate real-world scenarios. P8000 procedural stretchers, or gurneys, are used in emergency and operating room settings and feature variable height (down to 20.7 inches), variable wheels, retractable side rails, ergonomic transport handles, permanent IV pole and oxygen tank holder. The Hill-Rom stretcher is valued at nearly $2,400.

UCHealth donated the stretcher to give students the opportunity to learn on a more modern piece of equipment. It will also give students a chance to practice with patient transfer methods. The P8000 is compatible with Aims’ mobile X-ray unit that was also recently donated by UCHealth to help simulate trauma scenes for students.

“UCHealth is a proud clinical partner and supporter of the Radiologic Technology program at Aims,” said Cody Van, manager of radiology at UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital. “These donations give students the opportunity to practice with real equipment in the academic setting, which in turn, better prepares them to hit the ground running once they are in their clinical rotations. We view our relationship with Aims as a partnership and feel fortunate to be part of student success and selfishly enjoy a steady stream of highly prepared and professional graduates who join our workforce each and every year. Thank you, Aims.”

Aims has always put an emphasis on hands-on training as part of its curriculum.

The Radiologic Technology program plans to put the new stretcher into the classroom immediately to help students gain invaluable experience during their time on campus.

“Much thanks go to Cody Van, manager of radiology at UCHealth, and Matthew Maez, a biomedical equipment technician associate at UCHealth for their generous donation of an X-ray compatible patient stretcher,” said Aims Director of Radiographic Technology Tracey Warner. “This donation supports higher learning methods by providing the opportunity for both mobile and trauma radiography simulations.”

Donations may be made through the Aims Foundation, which is dedicated to raising funds for creating first-class learning environments as well as student scholarships. “Partnerships with community members are essential to elevating the quality of our programs, and we appreciate the support we receive from UCHealth,” Kelly Jackson, Aims Foundation executive director said. “Their gifts of medical equipment for instructional purposes provide state-of-the-art educational opportunities for our students, taking them to a new level of workforce readiness.”

Letters to the Editor By 2050, One in 12 People Living in Colorado will Call Weld County Home

Submitted by Weld County Commissioner Chairman Steve Moreno on behalf of the Board It’s no secret, Weld County is growing. Sure, we are growing most rapidly in the south and in the west, but the county overall is seeing an increase in population, which is leading to an increase in traffic. We see it in our towns, and we see it in our commutes. And it was reinforced in a November 7, 2017, Denver Post article in which the State Demographer predicts, “Weld, which now has about 50,000 fewer people than Larimer, catches up by 2025 and then races ahead, gaining 191,000 more people by 2050. About one in 19 Coloradans currently lives in Weld County. By 2050, one in 12 will.”

So how does county government prepare for what we know is coming, while still trying to maintain the very reason people live here in the first place? By proactive strategic planning. By working not only on projects for this year or next but also for five and 10 years down the road. It is the duty of those of us elected to represent the people of Weld County to make sure we accomplish that task; that we make the decisions that need to be made to keep the county on course for success.

The process of government and how these decisions are made is relatively simple and is the same for most every decision an elected commissioner makes: staff researches and recommends a course of action, working groups are set up, public meetings are held, public input is gathered, a course of action is voted on.

In short, these decisions aren’t made in a vacuum. Weld County government has a long history of collaborating with other agencies and municipalities to work on plans and solutions that work for the majority of those impacted.

Such is the case with the Weld County Road (WCR) 29 Access Control Plan (ACP).

In October 2015, the commissioners expressed the desire to work with the towns of Severance, Eaton, Ault, Pierce and Nunn on a planning effort regarding WCR 29. This planning effort would result in a planning document to which the aforementioned communities agreed would be the guidelines as to how they would like to see that road grow in the future. Every community – Ault, Severance, Eaton, Nunn and Pierce – adopted the plan in 2016.

Strangely, just prior to Weld County adopting the plan, members of the community along that road, some of whom received misinformation about the what the plan is and does, came forward to the county with questions. The county addressed the misinformation and agreed to hold two additional public meetings to further answer questions and concerns, most of which did not pertain to the ACP. During Monday’s Board meeting, elected representatives from the five communities involved in the ACP process all expressed continued support for the ACP and understood its importance in regard to the safety and the integrity of the road. They all published meeting notifications prior to their adoption of the ACP, and hey all invited public input at public meetings regarding this planning document.

Weld County Government as well held numerous public meetings and even extended its approval process by six months in order to address public comments and questions as well as to battle misinformation and unfounded allegations. Today, the Weld County commissioners adopted the ACP, the last entity of the group to do so, and by their action did what the people of Weld County elected them to do – to make the necessary decision to ensure the county, in collaboration with its municipalities, is planning for the inevitable growth headed our way.

CDOT and Lyft Guard Lives in Beware of the Beltless Campaign

Seat Belt Spoof Targets Unsuspecting Riders

DENVER — Of the 434 people killed in Colorado passenger vehicle crashes in 2017, over 50 percent were not wearing seat belts. To raise awareness about the dangers posed by unbuckled occupants – both to themselves and others in the vehicle - the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) partnered with Lyft to spoof customers as part of CDOT’s Beware of the Beltless campaign.

A paid actor hired by CDOT drove unsuspecting Lyft passengers around downtown Denver over the course of several hours last month. Disguised as a lifeguard straight off a California beach, the actor went into “lifesaving mode” by insisting all riders buckle up. He then delivered safety messages such as “unbuckled occupants are 30 times more likely to be ejected in a crash,” and “seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury in a crash by 45 percent.”

Footage of the lifeguard’s interactions with passengers was captured by a hidden camera and turned into a series of videos. The videos will run on social and digital media beginning today through the end of March to spread these important safety messages across Colorado.

Its Time to Review K-12 Programs

By Representative Jon Becker Every Successful organization or individual sets goals, plans, implements, and assesses the results. This concept applies equally to success in business, government, and education.

Currently there are over 60 programs in K-12 education that have been enacted by the state legislature and implemented by the Colorado Department of Education.

Over the years, the Colorado General Assembly has put so many programs in place for our schools that simply listing them is a daunting task. To complicate the situation even further, many programs are layered on top of existing laws and other programs. This structure and all of these programs could be working just fine or they could be costing schools time and money with no measurable results. We do not know which is true as we have not evaluated their implementation or outcomes.

There is no question that these programs were all created with the best intentions.

Nor that their goals to provide resources, support, and accountability to students and teachers throughout our state were well founded. Yet, as it stands today, we do not take stock of the education programs we have worked so hard to create. In order to gauge our performance, shouldn’t we at least be aware of what we are doing and how well we are doing it?

The lack of periodic review of state educational programming is exactly why my bill HB18-1222 aims to correct. This bill directs the state auditor with the input of the Department of Education to establish a process to systematically review programs which have been in place for at least six years.

This program review process will provide and objective assessment of how well programs achieve their goals. It will collect data on how programs are implemented, their effectiveness, and their cost efficiency. With this knowledge, lawmakers, school officials, and parents with have the ability to make more informed decisions about each program.

We are not setting up a chopping block to kill programs or kill funding. We simply want a comprehensive understanding of educational programs in Colorado. Nearly every state education organization stands in support of this bill and its process. Let’s take a better look at what we are doing to help make our schools the best they can be for the children of Colorado.

5 Safety Tips For Your Next Adventure Road Trip

With spring not far away, an annual fever will soon grip many Americans. The spirit of adventure is felt in a road trip – a timeless American pastime where families head out to discover new places or re-visit familiar ones.

According to MMGY Global’s 2017 Portrait of American Travelers, road trips are trending upward. The survey showed that road trippers accounted for 46 percent of all American travelers over the last 12-month period recorded, and that road trip vacations rose from 22 percent to 39 percent from 2016 to 2017.

“No matter how fast technology advances, the simple bonding a group gets in a road trip is just the right speed for many, slowing things down to be enjoyed and remembered,” says Gary Sandberg, a prepper who instructs church groups and neighborhood communities on adventure planning and emergency preparedness. “It’s something so many Americans still like to do – take a drive in the country, or plan a long weekend that’s distant but within manageable driving distance.

“But sometimes good intentions run into unfortunate snags, and the stories are endless of people who weren’t prepared adequately for the worst-case scenario. Taking the time to pack a few simple items for the road is definitely worth it.”

Sandberg gives five safety tips for your next road trip: • Take a map. Having a smartphone gives you access to maps and turn-by-turn instructions, but what if you lose service? Then you’ll need a good, old-fashioned paper map to know how to get where you’re going.

• Pack roadside necessities. It’s important to be prepared for your car breaking down – perhaps for an extended period – or getting a flat tire, etc. Essentials to have along for the ride include water, snacks, jumper cables, screwdriver, tire jack, tire iron and spare tire.

• Have a light source. Having car trouble at night emphasizes the need for a flashlight, which people frequently forget. Even when they do remember, the batteries may be dead, so it can be helpful to have a flashlight that runs on an alternative energy source. One way to bypass the need for fresh batteries is a water-powered flashlight, such as Hydralight (www.Hydralight.com), which can also be converted into a lantern. Hydralight comes with a Hydra fuel cell that can be dipped into water, providing up to 100 continuous hours of light on each dip, and up to 300 hours per fuel cell.

• Enable child safety locks. If you’re traveling with youngsters who are naturally curious and like to use their hands to open things that they shouldn’t, make sure to activate all of the child safety locks in your vehicle.

• Share the driving. Long road trips can lead to drowsy or distracted driving if one person does all the driving. To avoid this danger, share the driving duties with another responsible driver and give each other a break from time to time.

“There’s nothing more enjoyable than a family road trip,” Sandberg says, “and few things more aggravating than car trouble that ruins, or at least disrupts, the trip. You have to be prepared for that, and further, you need to know what travelling safely really means. It’s more than just safe driving.”

Bill to address Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s financial sustainability passes committee, 6-1

From CDOT DENVER, Colo. -- For the second time in three weeks, a Senate committee has given overwhelming support to a bill that would provide long-term funding to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

First, the Senate Finance Committee unanimously passed, 5-0, the Hunting, Fishing and Parks for Future Generations Act (Senate Bill 18143) on Feb. 13.

Then, on Tuesday, the Senate Appropriations Committee endorsed the bill and forwarded it to the full Senate for consideration on a 6-1 vote.

The bill’s progress contrasts to last session when a similar funding bill died in a Senate committee.

This year, senators are crediting CPW for conducting exhaustive statewide public outreach and using the feedback to resubmit an improved proposal that lays out specific ways money would be used, such as fixing deteriorating dams, recruiting new hunters, expanding conservation efforts and looking for ways to increase outdoor recreation opportunities for all Coloradans.

By 2025, CPW forecasts budget shortfalls of $30 million annually for wildlife and $11 million annually for parks. Unless able to address this funding shortfall, the agency’s work on habitat conservation, state park operations and wildlife management face a tough future.

The Future Generations Act will be heard on the Senate floor Thursday, March 8.

Jo-Anne Rohn-Cook Running for Wiggins Council Member

My name is Jo-Anne Rohn-Cook and I have served as a council member for the last two and half years. I would like to continue serving the town of Wiggins as a council member to meet the needs of our community.

Seventy Eight years ago I started my life in the Hoyt community and am still an active member in the work and function of the Hoyt Hall. I attended all twelve years of schooling in Wiggins and am a graduate as well as my five grown children; Teresa, Tammy, Kevin, Diane and Kris. I have eleven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, many of whom have attended and graduated from Wiggins.

Moved into Wiggins in 1978 and have three rental properties and have served on various committees.

They are as follow; Water Committee, Planning and Zoning and have attend many board meetings in the past years, before serving as a council member.

I have a great deal of business experience havening owned my own business for 39 years, Holistic Health Center. This allows me the flexibility that I need to represent the town of Wiggins as a council member. I serve as a representative for Wiggins on the; MCED, Morgan County Economic Development Board and Round Table Discussion sponsored by Morgan County Commissioners which meets once a month.

I have gained in-depth knowledge about the town, by attending CML (Community Municipal League) a state wide three day conference sponsored for all council members. This conference is offered each year with follow up seminars, which I find very informative. Serving as a board member, I have seen many positive changes: • Live broad casting of the board meetings which are also archived for public transparency.

• News Letter that provides information about the town of Wiggins for residences.

• Town staff and employees are offered training opportunities; safety training, etc.

• Providing a long range supply of adequate water and continued effort the meet the community’s needs.

• Implementing sewer upgrades and long range goals for the town.

• Future goals for sidewalks and paved streets.

• Preventative drainage control and flooding.

• Embracing change by doing more for less while working within the budget.

Thank you for allowing me to share a little bit about myself. I will continue to serve the town of Wiggins in any capacity possible. I feel my responsibility to actively represent the town of Wiggins and its members, as an objective and lifelong member of the community.

Bigger Location, More Space to Facilitate Easier Election Process

WELD COUNTY, CO —A new location in the Chase Building will allow the Weld County Elections Department more space to count, process and house ballots during elections. The move is to be complete March 7.

Located at 822 2nd Street, the election office’s new space is considerably bigger than its current location. Consisting of 4,737 square feet, the layout provides room for a more seamless process for ballot delivery, signature validation, and counting. It also includes a viewing room where the public can watch the process, and there is also a room to store election equipment.

In addition to providing room for a better ballot collection and counting process, increased space will also reduce a burden on employees. Of the 3,928 square feet at the office’s current location, 1,800 of it consists of conference rooms shared with other departments when elections are not occurring.

Chief Deputy Brenda Dones Announces Run to Replace Term-Limited Assessor

GREELEY, CO – January 11, 2018 – Brenda Dones, a resident of unincorporated Weld County south of Johnstown, and Chief Deputy Assessor has announced her bid to become the next Assessor for Weld County.

Dones, Chief Deputy Assessor of Weld County for the past 11 years, has formally announced her candidacy to replace current term limited Assessor Chris Woodruff. “My goal is to innovate and proactively address citizen’s expectations of the Assessor’s Office in the most efficient and effective way possible. The ever-changing landscape of all of Weld County means that we must continually evolve to support a fair and accurate process for taxpayers and taxing authorities alike,” said Dones in announcing her run for the top spot.

If elected, Dones would oversee a statutory office that discovers, lists, classifies and values all real and personal property in Weld County. The Assessor’s Office is also responsible for maintaining public records, including ownership and parcel boundary mapping.

Colorado March and April 2018 U.S. Military Service Academy and ROTC/NROTC Information Days

Four Congressional Staff sponsored U.S. Military Service Academy and ROTC/ NROTC Information Days will be conducted in Colorado during the months of March and April. These events provide the opportunity for parents and students to join representatives from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO; the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY; the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT; and ROTC/NROTC college programs for an information session regarding the academy and ROTC/NROTC application process, attending a military academy or ROTC/NROTC, and serving as a commissioned officer in the United States Armed Forces.

This is also an opportunity to hear from representatives of the Congressional Delegations about how they can assist students gain a nomination to a U.S. Military Service Academy, which is complex and can start as early as the junior year in High School.

Colorado FFA Foundation Inducts Four Members into the 29th Annual Farm Credit Colorado Agriculture Hall of Fame and Recognizes One Rising Star in Colorado Agriculture

The Colorado FFA Foundation recently inducted four honorees into the Farm Credit Colorado Agriculture Hall of Fame. Mrs. Mary Lou Chapman, Arvada, Mr. Tom Kourlis, Craig, Dr. Lee Sommers, Fort Collins and Mr. Harry Talbott, Palisade were all formally inducted, Wednesday, February 21, 2018 during the 29th Annual Hall of Fame Banquet. The 2018 inductees will join 94 other outstanding Colorado agriculturists who have been similarly honored since 1989. All Hall of Fame members’ portraits are displayed in the CoBank Center for Agricultural Education on CSU’s ARDEC campus.

The Rising Star in Colorado Agriculture Award was also presented. This is the seventh year for recognition of up and coming leaders in agriculture. Members of the Hall of Fame vote yearly on the winner of the Rising Star Award. Mrs. Becky Ravenkamp of Hugo was the recipient this year.

Peers and business associates joined the Foundation to recognize the four inductees, at the Farm Credit Colorado Agriculture Hall of Fame Banquet at the Renaissance Denver Stapleton Hotel. A unique, multi-media presentation highlighted the life of each new inductee and the Rising Star during the ceremony. The dinner was prepared by Chef Charles Fulton of the Renaissance Hotel. Cargill Inc. sponsored the dinner by providing all of the filet’s for the Filet Mignon main course.

Executive Level sponsors for the event were; American AgCredit, Bank of Colorado, Cargill, Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee, Griffith Dairy, Guaranty Bank and Trust, Rocky Mountain Farmers Union and Viaero Wireless.

Hosted by the Colorado FFA Foundation, the Hall of Fame Banquet is held yearly to induct members into the Colorado Agriculture Hall of Fame who have significantly contributed to Colorado’s second largest industry. The Hall of Fame Banquet was held in conjunction with the Governor’s Forum on Colorado Agriculture, which is a prime opportunity to gauge the direction of the industry and learn about issues facing Colorado agriculture. Both the forum and the banquet are attended by industry and political leaders, as well as family farmers and ranchers who lead and support the agriculture industry and its future.

“The 29th Annual Hall of Fame Banquet was one of the most well attended events we have produced, with attendee numbers pushing 500. We, as an organization, continue to be impressed with the quality of our applicants and honorees,” said Don Thorn, Executive Director of the Colorado FFA Foundation.

Benny Cisneros Ibarra

December 25, 1944 - February 26, 2018 Gary Lee Moses, age 73, of Keenesburg, CO died February 26, 2018 at home, right where he wanted to be!

He was born December 25, 1944 in North Platte, NE. He always said being born on Christmas Day with the last name Moses was in his favor!

Born to Howard and Maudie Bell (McGuire) Moses, his parents were soon divorced and he was raised by his dad at an early age. They lived in several places for his dad’s work including an Odd Fellows Lodge. While at the Pearsen Coal Mine in Dacono they stayed with the mule tender and cook but finally ended up in Derby.

His dad married Evelyn Meyen on May 31, 1952 who he fondly called and was his mom. Evelyn worked at the hospital and was actually there years earlier when Gary was born. Gary attended Adams City High School where he pestered Beverly Hoffman to help him with his homework. They were married November 3, 1963 and happily so for 44 years until she passed away on May 28, 2008.

Right after high school he served an apprenticeship at K & F Products as a machinist. This started a life-long career as a machinist at Irvin Industries and JH Semp & Sons. At Irvin he worked his way up to lead foreman and plant superintendent but really enjoyed working out among his co-workers. A good friend said he was the best lathe operator he had ever known. For a few years in between, he worked for Lauridson Farms.

When adversity hit like car troubles or when the well went out, Gary grinded tools in the garage or got a part time job teaching machining. He also guided on horseback for many years in the Pearl area of North Park. A hunting enthusiast, he enjoyed his annual trip with many family and friends over the years. Rather than pay to buy something new, if it were made out of metal, he would just build it.

Gary was a clever man with a strong sense of family, a friend with many since his early school days and quite a story teller. Baxter Black even used some of his antics in his Carhartt Cowboy story. He had a mustache that none of us will ever forget and would routinely get compliments from strangers. His quiet charisma and great sense of humor made him liked by all who knew him.

Gary is survived by two sons, Rocky Moses and Scott Moses and wife Ginnah, grandkids Taggyrt and Wyollah all of Keenesburg; brother Ed Meyen and wife Marie of Lawrence, KS; sister Bonnie Marquette of McCook, NE; sister-in-laws Jo Sailors of Cheyenne, WY; Edna Kalous of Brush; Dorothy Hoffman of Thornton; brother-inlaws Jerry Hoffman and wife Alice of Parker; Leroy and wife Jeanette of Longmont and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Bev, brothers Dick Meyen, Bill, Donny and Vernon Sailors; brother-in-laws Gordon Marquette, John Kalous, Herman, Raymond and Jim Hoffman, Harvey Miller and Ray Winder; sister-in-laws Evelyn Winder, Rachel Hoffman, Leona Miller and Helen Reiber.

He was dyed-in-the-wool old-fashioned and still cooked in a cast iron skillet, used a wood stove and wore suspenders. An “antique” in the true sense of the word, his staunch support of family and deep friendships are his legacy!

March 10, 1953 - March 04, 2018 Benny C. Ibarra, 64, of Ft. Lupton, CO, peacefully entered eternal life early Saturday, March 3, 2018. He is the 9th child of Barbarito and Delfina C. Ibarra. Benny was a passionate man who took great joy in working for the City of Ft. Lupton. His career began in the summer of June 12, 1979, where he was led to become a highly skilled Heavy Equipment Operator.

Due to health issues, he was sad to retire after 34 years on May 31, 2013.

Benny was a member of and played bass guitar for Friends in Christ, a Catholic Choir (formed in 1978) for St. Williams Catholic Church and Brother to Brother, a contemporary Christian gospel group (formed in early 2000). Both groups were formed by immediate and extended family members to outreach into the community and various churches ministering in God’s word and music. His hobbies included carpentry, playing bass guitar, cruising, camping, and took great joy in helping others.

Benny is survived by and was extremely loving and proud of his children, Ben Ibarra, and Francine (Andres) Navarro, his grandchildren Kimimela Ibarra, Ricardo Gaytan Jr., Andres and Shyanne Navarro, as well as his 5 godchildren, Tammy Lovato, Debra Martinez, Tommy Tijerina, Sonny Gonzalez, and Anthony Martinez.

Benny is also survived by his ex-wife and best friend; Margie Ibarra, of Ft. Lupton, his siblings Barbarito Ibarra Jr, of Findlay, OH, Maria (Clemente) Esparza, Toni (Victor) Lopez, Stella (Abel) Leal, Rose (Jesse) Tijerina, Manuel (Juanita) Ybarra, all of Ft. Lupton, and Gabriel (Veronica) Ibarra, of Pueblo, brother-in-law Robert Gonzales, of Ft. Lupton, as well as his many loving nieces, nephews and close friends he considered his family in Christ.

Benny was preceded in death by his parents, siblings; Andres Ibarra, Jerry Ibarra, Petra Villagomez, and Lupe Gonzales as well as Godson; Anthony Martinez and Brother-in-law; Clemente Esparza.

A heartfelt thank you to Avamere Transitional Care & Rehabilitation Center, Front Range Hospice staff for being compassionate and personable during our dads last days, the City of Ft. Lupton for blessing him with a great career, his brothers in Christ who lifted him while weak, And our community friends and family for offering prayer, support & donating food. St. Williams Catholic Church, The Healing Place Worship Center and Tabor-Rice Funeral Home for providing exemplary ease in arrangements.

Funeral services for Benny will be at St. Williams Catholic Church on Saturday, March 10, 2018. The Rosary is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. with the Mass of Christian Burial immediately following at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends in the parish hall after the mass. Per Benny’s request, he will be laid to rest in a private ceremony.

Community News: This is an election year, in Colorado among those to be elected is Governor. The first step of the election is the County Caucus. On Tuesday, March 6 all state caucuses will be held. In our area, precinct 1, areas of Weldona, Goodrich, Orchard and parts on the south side of the river. The Republican Caucus will be held at the Weldon Valley School, the Democratic Caucus will be held in Fort Morgan at the Bloehorn Lecture Hall. Get involved, make your voice heard!

Need a fun and entertaining evening? Attend the performance of the U.S. Air Force Academy Band on Saturday, March 10, 7:30 p.m. The admission is free and the place is the Brush High School Auditorium.

Weldon Valley History: Presbyterian Church in Orchard-With the coming of homesteader in 1910, Eli Etchison began and led the organization of a church. He was aided by reverend C.K. Powell, of the mission board of the Presbyterian Church. Unit this time, Orchard had to meet in Goodrich or Deuel (Weldona). In 1913, a church building was erected at the cost of $2000. In 952 the Orchard church joined both the Goodrich and Weldona churches as one, calling the church building Goodrich home. The Orchard building was privately owned and was destroyed by fire. A large cottonwood tree still stands on the corner of the property it was planned in the very early days of the church.

Colorado Superintendents’ Proposed Formula to Modernize School Funding December 2017

Background The modernized school finance formula proposed by Colorado Superintendents aspires to provide all 178 Colorado school districts with an increased level of funding for all students, while at the same time establishing a more equitable distribution of funding for students who are underserved and/or face the greatest challenges to achieving Colorado’s Graduation Guidelines and finishing high school ready for college and career.

Since passage of the existing Public School Finance Act of 1994, expectations of Colorado’s public schools have increased substantially both in terms of expected outcomes of students and levels of public accountability for schools and school districts. During this same period, the programming and services Colorado’s schools must provide to meet the increasing needs and challenges of students have also expanded exponentially.

In response to these challenges, Colorado Superintendents began work on developing a school finance formula that supports the current needs of all of Colorado’s public schools and the students they serve.

Objectives The Colorado Superintendent’s modernized school finance formula as it exists today was developed to achieve the following objectives: 1. Ensuring that all districts receive additional funding in a more fair and equitable manner to support current academic standards and accountability systems.

2. Creating a student-centric distribution formula utilizing weights for special education, ELL, and gifted and talented students as well as those students living in poverty, ELL, and gifted and talented students.

3. Ensuring that, at a minimum, every Colorado school district receives a total program amount at or above the current year total program funding calculation excluding the budget stabilization (negative) factor.

4. Recognizing and adjusting for cost differences among districts related to size, geography, and the cost of doing business.

5. Creating a transparent model.

6. Including an increased base amount to begin moving total per student funding in Colorado closer to the national average.

Legislation Legislation supporting the Colorado Superintendent’s modernized school finance formula must contain language that will ensure that the formula will only be enacted in the event that an adequate and sustainable state-level increase in appropriation of funds for P-12 education allows the model to be fully funded. Any attempt to implement the modernized school finance formula without adequate revenue to fully fund the model must be strongly rejected.

New Restrictions on Shed Antler and Horn Collection Take Effect on Friday, March 2 From CDOT DENVER, Colo. - Antler collectors and all people recreating in Colorado are reminded that shed antler and horn collecting is prohibited on all public lands west of I-25 from March 2 through April 30. Additionally, in order to maintain protection for the Gunnison sagegrouse, the new regulations include a closure to collection of shed antlers on public lands May 1 to May 15 from sunset to 10 a.m. in the Gunnison basin (Game Management Units 54, 55, 66, 67, 551).

The new regulation was approved by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission in January.

Starting next year and in all subsequent years, the seasonal collection prohibition starts on Jan. 1 and continues through April 30.

The purpose of this regulation is to reduce stress on wintering big game animals during the time of year when deer, elk, pronghorn and moose are most vulnerable.

Stress can result in decreased body condition, increased mortality and decreased survival of deer fawns and elk calves. These regulations protect the health of Colorado’s big game herds and other wintering wildlife.

CPW will be working with recreation organizations, land-use management agencies, visitors bureaus and local communities to get the word out about these new restrictions. Protecting our wintering wildlife is something we have to do together.

"As more people enjoy each season that Colorado has to offer, and new forms of recreation continue to emerge, it is increasingly important that everyone involved

in outdoor recreation help to educate others about conservation of our public lands," said CPW Director Bob Broscheid.

Anyone violating the closure or in possession of antlers or horns during the closure period will be fined at least $68. Even if you are not intentionally looking for antlers you are prohibited from picking up antlers.

Because wildlife officers patrol vast areas, CPW is asking for help from the public to enforce the new regulations. If you see activity that appears to be in violation of the closure regulation, please call the nearest CPW office or local law enforcement as soon as possible. Do not, however, confront or approach anyone you suspect is behaving illegally.

Below are some of the frequently asked questions CPW staff has received about the new regulations. Please help us ensure the public is well informed about these new changes Why were these dates chosen?

In most parts of western Colorado, winter conditions affecting big game typically last into late April or early May, and big game are still losing weight and body condition. The April 30 date is intended to help minimize additional stress during this critical time frame.

In addition, these dates closely align with restrictions in neighboring states. For instance, Wyoming prohibits the collection of shed antlers and horns from January 1 through April 30 on public lands west of the Continental Divide.

Why are other kinds of recreation and hunting still allowed in areas where shed collection is restricted?

While it is true that these restrictions may overlap with some hunting seasons, the amount of pressure put on the animals will be limited by the number of hunting license holders. Some shed collectors use OHVs and snowmobiles in their search.

Loud, fast-moving OHVs and snowmobiles are major sources of wildlife stress. Also, the CPW Commission does not regulate other forms of recreation such as hikers and bikers on other land-use agency properties such as the Bureau of Land Management lands or National Forest land.

What are the penalties for violations?

Our initial goal is to educate the public about the negative impacts to wildlife caused by irresponsible shed collecting and recreational activity, and why the new regulation is needed; however, based on officer discretion, violators will likely face a $50 fine and $18 surcharge. There will be five license suspension points applied to the violator’s privilege to apply for, purchase, or exercise the benefits conferred by any licenses issued by CPW. If a person accumulates 20 or more points within a five-year period, that person could be suspended from hunting and fishing for up to five years.

Additionally, possession of antlers during the closure on public lands west of I-25 can also be counted as a separate ($68) violation with each individual antler being considered a possible violation offense. In addition, apart from the new shed collection rules, harassing wildlife remains illegal and CPW officers will cite any individual violating this existing regulation. Harassing wildlife is a $137 violation that also includes 10 license suspension points. A $2.50 DNA surcharge will also apply to each citation that an officer issues to a violator.

What about private lands?

The CPW Commission chose not to include a private land requirement in its decision to enact a shed collection closure in Colorado. However, it is unlawful to collect sheds on private property unless a person has lawful access to that private property.

Possession of antlers or horns on private property without lawful access is prohibited.

Is shed and horn collection growing in popularity?

Although shed collection is not a new activity in Colorado, there is evidence that it is rapidly growing in popularity. At the CPW Commission’s January meeting, both the commissioners and members of the public noted they had seen a big increase in shed collection around the state, likely due to the substantial profit collectors can make from the sale of shed horns and antlers. Once considered a fun, recreational activity for families or the source of a unique medium for artisans, shed collection is now a major business. As a result, a growing number of people are participating. Unfortunately, too many shed collectors are focusing on financial gain rather than protecting wildlife, creating the need for new regulations.

In some states, you need a permit to collect sheds. Is Colorado considering the same?

The requirement of a priced permit for collecting shed antlers and horns is a novel concept that would be precedent-setting in the western U.S. Although the CPW Commission decided not to require a permit at its latest meeting, it is an issue it may revisit in the future.

Will the BLM/Forest Service/Sheriff's Office, enforce the new regulation as well?

These agencies may notify CPW if they catch violators and coordinate with CPW officers to take enforcement action.

Once an antler or horn drops, why is it still the purview of CPW? It is no longer 'wildlife.'

Shed antlers or shed horns are still considered "wildlife" based on the statutory definition, which includes any parts thereof and whether alive or dead.

Have there been past restrictions?

Previously there were two localized antler collection closures in place, one for public lands in the Gunnison Basin and one for public lands in the Eagle and Roaring Fork Valleys. The problem with these closures was that it was moving the antler collection pressure to other areas of the state with important winter range habitats. The only other restriction that is also in place is the harassment of wildlife statute, which can be written to any individual who is harassing wildlife, including shed collectors. A harassment ticket is $137.

What if I’m doing something unrelated, like hiking, and find an antler?

If you are hiking in an area where there is currently a shed antler and horn collecting closure and you see an antler or horn, please leave it alone. There is no way for a CPW officer to differentiate between you and someone who entered the area for the purpose of shed collecting.

What is a Caucus?

The caucus is held every two years and signals the beginning of an election cycle and its nominating process from the “Grass Roots” This year the Republican Caucus will be held on March 6, 2018. It is a meeting of the people in your neighborhood or precinct. A precinct is the smallest political geographic area. It is an election district of a neighborhood or area with fixed boundaries. It is at your precinct caucus that you will have an opportunity to play a key role in Colorado’s political system by selecting representatives as precinct committee people and delegates and alternates to the county assembly and the higher assemblies. In election years, political parties nominate candidates, write platforms and organized their efforts to get out the vote on Election Day and this all starts at in your precinct caucus. Morgan County has 17 precincts.

At each precinct caucus you will elect two precinct committee people from your precinct, who will serve for two years, which will be charged with ensuring that all registered Republicans in their precinct have the information they need to participate in the political process from the caucus through the General Election. You will elect delegates and alternates to the Republican County Assembly which will be held on March 24, 2018. Each precinct will nominate one delegate to each of the higher assemblies and State Convention and those who would like to attend will sign a wish list for the remaining delegates and alternates. Delegates to the county assembly and the higher assemblies will nominate and vote for candidates for public office. The names of those candidates will be placed on the primary ballot for election by the Republican Party on June 26, 2018. Your precinct can also introduce Resolutions to be included in the party platform which will be voted on at the county assembly and to sign up to be a potential election judge.

At the County Assembly the process continues. The precinct delegates or alternates to the assembly will vote on candidates that were nominated for Morgan County Commissioner in District 2, County Clerk, Assessor, Treasurer, Sheriff, Surveyor and Coroner and for the resolutions that were passed from the precincts. A list of delegates and alternates to the higher assemblies, the 65th Representative District, the 4th Congressional, the 1st Senate District and the State Convention will be ratified. These assemblies are April 13 and 14 in Boulder.

This process continues at the State and the National Convention.

To participate at the caucus or to be elected a committee person, delegate or alternate, a person must be a resident of the precinct for at least 30 days and registered with the Republican Party for at least two months. Any registered Republican Party member who reached the age of 18 years or has become a naturalized citizen within the 2 months immediately preceding the caucus may participate.

The Republican Caucus will be held on Tuesday March 6, 2018 at 7 pm. It is suggested to arrive early to get registered. Precinct 1, the Wiggins area, will meet at the Wiggins Town Hall, Precinct 2, the Weldona area, will meet at the Weldon Valley School, Precinct 3-11, the Fort Morgan Area will meet at the Fort Morgan Middle School, and Precincts 12-17, the Brush, Snyder and Hillrose areas, will meet at the Brush Middle School.

The Morgan County Republican Assembly will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 9 am at the Fort Morgan Middle School.

AD HOC Charter Review Charter Review Citizens Can Soon Renew License Plates Committee Appointed by Commissioners at 18 Kiosks in 12 Colorado Counties

WELD COUNTY, CO — Following two days interviewing 28 applicants for the Ad Hoc Charter Review Committee, the Board of Commissioners has appointed nine Weld County residents to lead the task of reviewing the county’s Home Rule Charter.

Al Dominguez (Windsor), Jackie Johnson (Greeley), Dave Kisker (Johnstown), Mark Lawley (Eaton), Raymond Patch (Greeley), Justus Pettit (Pierce), Garrett Varra (Longmont), James Welch (LaSalle) and Sam Gluck (LaSalle) have all accepted their appointment and will work together to gather public input, review the charter and propose any suggested changes to the Board of Commissioners.

When interviewing applicants to serve on the committee, the commissioners ensured the applicants selected represented geographical areas throughout the county, expressed the desire and understanding of the task to review the entire charter, had some overall understanding of local government and the constitution, and were willing to make the time and travel commitment to participate in the meetings and the public outreach.

Now appointed, the review committee will meet to elect their chair and vice-chair as well as set meeting dates, including meetings for the public to provide input and comment. No less than five meetings (to be held throughout the county) to gather public comment will be held throughout the review process.

The timeline for the committee to accomplish its task is short as the committee’s research and review, public information gathering and final language for any proposed changes must be completed and presented to the commissioners by July 23 in order for any changes to be considered for inclusion on the November 2018 ballot.

While the review committee will work independently, some county resources will assist the committee for the duration of the process. Staff from the Weld County Attorney’s Office will provide support to the committee with regard to questions, clarification of duties and meeting protocol. Staff from the Weld County Public Communications Office will also assist the committee with meeting notification and information dissemination the committee may desire with the public.

Self-service Technology Expanded on Feb. 26 to Allow Cross-County Transactions

Greeley, CO – Renewing your license plates in Colorado is about to get a lot easier.

Beginning March 5, citizens in 12 Colorado counties will have the option to renew their vehicle registration at any of 18 self-service kiosks located in any of those participating counties.

“Weld County is proud to partner with 11 other counties to accept cross-county transactions on our Colorado MVExpress kiosks,” said Clerk and Recorder Carly Koppes. “This will be an incredible convenience for our citizens. If you live in one county, but work, shop, go on vacation, or attend college in another participating county, you can use any kiosk along the way to renew your license plate. You’ll walk away with your tabs in minutes.”

The kiosks are available only to residents of Arapahoe, Adams, Boulder, Broomfield, Douglas, El Paso, Freemont, Jefferson, La Plata, Larimer, Mesa and Weld counties. However, more counties may authorize kiosk transactions for residents later this year.

The kiosks are blue and yellow machines that look similar to an ATM. To use one, simply type your license plate number on the touch screen, or scan the barcode on your renewal postcard; then pay taxes and fees by check, credit or debit card. The kiosk will instantly print your receipt, vehicle registration and license plate tabs.

Arapahoe County customers will pay a $3 convenience fee for every vehicle renewed at a kiosk, which directly pays for the technology. There is no budget impact or cost to other taxpayers for this convenience.

If your vehicle requires an emissions test, you should complete it at least two business days before using a kiosk. If you have recently changed or updated your auto insurance, please wait 2-4 business days before using a kiosk to renew. If your grace period for your renewal has ended, you will not be able to renew at a machine and must appear in person at your county motor vehicle office.

Statewide, seat belt use was 84 percent in 2017, which is six percent lower than the national average of 90 percent. It is estimated that 210 lives in Colorado were saved by seat belts in 2016, but there was potential for 58 more lives to have been saved if there was 100 percent seat belt usage. Colorado is one of only 16 states without a primary seat belt law. When primary seat belt laws are passed, seat belt use rates increase between five to ten percent.

In 2002, Christie Haskell survived a violent, high-speed, side impact car crash. She was belted, riding in the back seat with a friend who wasn’t. Haskell’s friend flew into her, breaking Haskell’s collar bone, forcing her head through the window and causing permanent hip, spine and neck damage.

Sixteen years later, Haskell still walks with a limp and undergoes regular physical therapy. She says she can’t do basic household tasks like folding the laundry or loading the dishwasher – things most people take for granted.

“It’s important to understand that when someone chooses not to wear their seatbelt, they’re not just risking their own life,” said Haskell. “They are no longer your friend or family member. They become a human wrecking ball capable of permanently injuring or even killing you in a crash.”

Earlier this year, the Beware of the Beltless campaign featured radio spots, digital banners and billboards that educated Coloradans about the dangers of unbuckled passengers. Powerful messaging like, “is a killer in your passenger seat,” and “save yourself, make a friend buckle up” aimed to empower those who already buckle up to ask others in their vehicle to do the same.

Agriculture Day at the Capitol Set for March 22 in Denver Food Competition, Celebration of State’s Ag Industry One of the Most Popular Events Under the Golden Dome

A celebration of Colorado’s agricultural producers and agribusinesses is set for Thursday, March 22, at the Capitol Building in Denver.

The ag organizations that make up the Colorado Agriculture Council will once again host Agriculture Day at the Capitol, starting at 10:30 a.m. and featuring the teaming up of 14 local chefs with various lawmakers and ag representatives in a cook-off competition of Colorado-grown foods. Lunch will be served around 11 a.m.

Producers, the public and media are all invited to attend the event, which takes place as part of National Agriculture Week.

The Colorado ag event at the State Capitol has become one of the most popular events under the Golden Dome – attended by about 1,000 people, including the governor, state legislators, farmers, ranchers and many others.

Each year, the event showcases all that Colorado’s ag industry does for our state, highlighting its efforts in feeding Colorado’s 5 million-plus people, its stewardship of our resources, and its $40 billion economic impact – a top two or three contributor to the state's economy each year.

Cumulonimbus Season is Approaching-Are You Prepared?

WELD COUNTY, CO – Each year, Weld County skies are overtaken by cumulonimbus. Their size is overwhelming, and they are responsible for producing one of the very things Weld County is most noted for nationally. Being able to spot one of these and understand how you can protect you and your family from them is crucial!

What are we talking about? Thunderstorms, of course. Spring is coming and along with warmer weather comes the danger of severe storms.

The Weld County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is hosting a free Weather Spotter Training Class at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 22. The class is free, but a reservation is required.

Attendees will learn about different types of weather systems, and how to spot and report severe weather, such as tornadoes and thunderstorms. They will also learn how to stay safe in the event of tornados, floods and lightning.

“This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 2008 Weld County tornado, which impacted Platteville, Gilcrest, Greeley and Windsor,” said Weld County OEM Director Roy Rudisill. “And as that tornado taught us, severe weather can strike anytime, anywhere. It is important for Weld County residents to be knowledgeable about and prepared for severe weather.”

Weather spotters are regularly used by the National Weather Service to help them provide timely warnings to the public when severe weather strikes. You can become a weather spotter by attending the Weather Spotter Training Class presented by the National Weather Service and hosted by the Weld County OEM at the Weld County Administration Building, 1150 O St., Greeley.

Gardner, Alexander, Colleagues Introduce Bipartisan, Bicameral Legislation to Help Restore and Rebuild Our National Parks

Say bill will help pay for $11 billion National Park maintenance backlog, including buildings, campgrounds, trails and water systems

WASHINGTON, – Senators Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) and Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), along with eight of their colleagues, today introduced a bipartisan, bicameral bill that will use revenues from energy production on federal lands to help pay for the over $11 billion maintenance backlog at our national parks. Gardner, Alexander, and their colleagues have been working with Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke on the National Park Restoration Act, which will help restore and rebuild roads, buildings, campgrounds, trails and water systems in the country’s national parks for the next generation of visitors.

U.S. Senators Angus King (I-Maine), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) Joe Manchin (D- W.Va.), and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Representatives Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) and Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.) are original cosponsors.

This bill is the largest investment in National Parks in our nation's history.

The National Park Restoration Act: • Creates the National Park Restoration Fund to provide mandatory funding for the highpriority deferred maintenance needs that support critical infrastructure and visitor services at our national parks.

• Provides mandatory funding for the maintenance backlog on top of annual appropriations for operations and construction at the National Park Service.

• The fund receives 50 percent of onshore and offshore revenues from energy production on federal lands over expected amounts that are not already allocated to other purposes.

• Protects payments to states, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, the Reclamation Fund, and all other existing uses of onshore and offshore revenues. These existing uses will receive all of their funding before the National Park Restoration Fund receives any funding.

The backlog of infrastructure projects at our national parks can limit access and impair visitor experiences and recreation opportunities, and without additional funding, the backlog could continue to grow. The National Park Service (NPS) maintenance backlog is nearly four times what NPS receives in annual appropriations. In Fiscal Year 2017 the NPS’ deferred maintenance needs were $11.6 billion – that same fiscal year, NPS received $2.9 million in annual appropriations.

President Trump and Secretary Zinke have made addressing the growing maintenance backlog a top priority.

CDOT Holds Meeting at Hudson Town Hall to Update Citizens on I-76/SH52 Project

CDOT officials held a meeting to update the citizen’s of Hudson on the I0-76/Sh52 Project. (see graphic). The Interstate I-76/SH52 interchange is the number one priority in CDOT’s Upper Front Range Transportation Plan for Larimar, Morgan and Weld County. The purpose of this project is to identify and evaluate the deficiencies in the interchange, develop and design solutions to address these deficiencies and construct interchange improvements based on available financing. The goal of the project is to provide a corridor that safely moves vehicles, pedestrians, and trucks efficiently and harmoniously.

The design is leaning towards two roundabouts as can be seen on the attached graphic.

A roundabout is a circular intersection in which drivers travel counter clockwise around a center island. In addition to the center island, roundabouts also feature triangle-shaped islands to slow and direct traffic flows.

The circular shape is designed to control the direction of traffic and reduce speeds as drivers yield to traffic before entering the roundabout. The curved roads and oneway travel around the roundabout eliminate the possibility of T-bone crashes and head on collisions. Any collisions that might occur are typically minor and rarely cause injuries since they occur at such slow speeds. According to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, roundabouts reduce injury crashes by 75% at intersections at intersections where traffic signals or stop signs were previoyulsy used for traffic control.

Roundabouts are designed to encourage continuous traffic flow because there are no traffic signals or stop signs. Drivers need only to yield to traffic before entering the roundabout. If there is no traffic in the roundabout, drivers are not required to stop.

Studies by the Federal Highway Administration have shown that roundabouts can increase traffic capacity by 30 to 50 percent compared to traditional intersections.
