General Manager’s Report Dear Lost City Golf Club Members, It was great to see many of you out on the golf course after several weeks of hibernation. Sometimes I fail to appreciate the important things in my life health (golf provides fresh air, sunshine and walking), family (my 4 brothers play golf) and friends (most of my friends play golf). I am glad I took up this great game 51 years ago. The scores I shoot don’t really matter as long as I get out in the fresh air and spend time with family and friends. I write this because I am sure most of you can relate.

The Lost City Golf Club Experience Owning a home is nothing like renting an apartment or a hotel room. Being a member at the Lost City Golf Club is nothing like playing at a public golf course twice a week or going to a resort course one week out of the year. The difference is psychological and financial. Members of the Lost City Golf Club think and act like owners, not customers and rightfully so. The way you, our club members, treat your homes, your cars and your friends are just different than the way you treat a hotel room, a rental car or someone standing online next to you at the supermarket. You are loyal to our friends and invest in your homes. Tradition, loyalty and investment are important

words for the members of the Lost City Golf Club. When you joined the Lost City Golf Club, you made a commitment to a lifestyle and your fellow club members. A clear example of what it means to be part of the Lost City Golf Club occurred during this pandemic. Half of our club staff was furloughed during the government mandated shutdown. The federal government stepped up with many programs for unemployed Americans, but the systems were overloaded and could not get these funds out in a timely manner. Many of our staff members were faced with extreme financial difficulties. What do you our club members do? You, our club members raise $70,000 in a few days to help the members of the Lost City Golf Club Staff. Other unemployed workers in the hospitality industry were forced to wait online in the street for food to feed themselves and their families. I go to the Cheesecake Factory a lot. I told them how our club members came to the rescue of our staff members. The Cheesecake Factory staff members could only dream about belonging to a community like the Lost City Golf Club. Club dues are the financial bedrock of our club. When you write out the check for dues it is not just about

hitting a golf ball on a field of green grass. It is about your relationships and commitment to your fellow club members and loyal staff members. It is about the feeling you get when you walk around the clubhouse, practice facilities and golf course…. you are home. It is about listening to the old and new stories from long time members and newer members describing their fun experiences at the Lost City Golf Club. The Lost City Golf Club is your home, your oasis from the outside world. Holiday Parties, Can-Ams, Member-Guests, Welcome Back Parties, End of Season Parties, Friday Night TGIFs all secure that bond you have with your friends and the Lost City Golf Club. You cannot get those experiences or feelings anywhere else. You are a patriotic member of the Lost City Golf Club and not a fly by night customer looking for the best deal. Loyal club members and loyal staff members all have the mind set of “I am part of something special, a strong community of good people”. The Lost City Golf Club is not a commodity or a round of golf to be found on a golf discount website. The Lost City Golf Club is a loyal community of outstanding club members and staff members. Long live the Lost City Golf Club, it is our second home and it is special.

May 2020 President News ... We are all hoping that this edition of the newsletter finds everyone well and preparing to get out golfing once again!

Last month I was reporting the disappointing news that we had closed the golf course and I now have the opportunity to report the wonderful news that we are now open for golf! Granted, we must abide by the County Regulations regarding tee times and appropriate social distancing, but after a month of abstinence, I think most of us would be willing to play blindfolded...well, maybe not quite! During the past month, our club and course may have been closed for member use, however many employees were working without breaks as projects were completed, meetings regarding staffing and budgets were frequent and meal prep continued. Board and Committee members also continued to meet, plan, discuss and make

projections. It is a difficult time for decision making because it is like planning construction on shifting sand.

devoted to this decision making process, we always keep that thought in the foreground of our discussions.

I have heard from several members concerned about our upcoming capital improvement projects. Some are concerned that we might postpone the project when it is clearly needed while others are concerned that if we proceed, we may have financial difficulties. At this time, the Board has agreed to defer this decision until we have additional information regarding the direction of our economy, the status of our membership and the health of our financials. Professionals in this market strongly advocate for continued capital investment during this period. That opinion is based on numerous factors and statistics from the golf industry in the aftermath of the 2008 economic downturn. The primary responsibility of the Board of Directors is to ensure the long term health of the club; so as we look forward to a special Board meeting

On another note, in our most recent meeting, the Board agreed to a sixmonth plan for improvement of our fairways by virtue of strategic tree removal and a targeted fertilization program. Although this is not a quick fix, it is a coordinated action to determine its effectiveness which will direct future treatment. Although currently we are all subject to various degrees of social isolation due to location, in the coming weeks we will begin to see some changes and will interpret and navigate them accordingly. For now, in Atlantis, it is wonderful to see golfers once again...even if it is every fifteen minutes! Cheers to all!

When to Replace a Ball that Moves on a Putting Green New Rule: Rule 13.1d revises the procedure for when a ball on the putting green is moved by wind, water or other natural forces, so that it must sometimes be replaced and sometimes be played from its new spot: •If the ball had been lifted and replaced on its original spot before it moved, the ball must always be replaced on its original spot, regardless of what caused it to move. The ball must be played from its new spot only if the ball had not been lifted and replaced before it moved. Reasons for Change: When a ball at rest is moved by natural forces such as the wind, it is normally played as it lies because its movement is considered a continuation of the previous stroke, as no person or object affected where the ball lies. But when the moved ball had already been lifted and replaced, the connection to the previous stroke is no longer obvious. This is especially true on the putting green, where a player is allowed to mark, lift and replace a ball for any reason and many players do so as a matter of course. When a ball on the green moves after having come to rest: •It can result in outcomes that seem unfair, such as when the ball rolls off the green (sometimes ending up in a bunker or in water) or rolls close to or into the hole. •Requiring the ball to be replaced if it had already been lifted and replaced eliminates such outcomes in those situations.

Substituting A Ball New Rule: Under Rule 14.3, when taking relief, the player is always allowed the choice to substitute a ball or to use the original ball, including when taking penalty relief and when taking free relief (Rules 1519).

Free Relief from a cart path, you can change to a new ball. Relief w penalty from unplayable lie, you can change to a new ball. Makes the rule more consistent.

Most of this 834-acre development was formerly Mulberry Farms, owned by Frank J. and Julia Deal Lewis, parents of former State Senator Philip D. Lewis, who described the farm in 2007: “It had cattle, orange groves, citrus of all kinds, free-range chickens—we had 25,000 head of chickens year-round. We raised mulberry trees to feed silkworms [and] were producing silk on a commercial basis.” The Lewis family sold Mulberry Farms in 1958 to Nathan Hunt and Paul Kintz, who purchased two additional parcels along Lantana Road. The City of Atlantis, chartered in 1959, was one of the first country club communities in Palm Beach County, and further west than other upscale development

The city is bordered by the Lake Worth Drainage (L-14) Canal on the north, Lantana Road on the south, Military Trail on the west, and Congress Avenue on the east. JFK Medical Center and nearby medical offices account for most of the commercial property, which covers ten percent of the city area. Although the development originally attracted retirees, today Atlantis’s 2,000 residents vary in age.

The Golf Shop is not open for in-store purchases however, if you need balls, hat, glove or any other item, just let the outside staff know and we will bring those items out to you. Thanks and enjoy the great outdoors!
