Annual Golf Meeting Lost City Golf Club
General Manager Dear Lost City Golf Members, I am writing this on New Year’s Eve. Looking back on 2021 a lot of positive things happened at our Club. •

We have a brand new 27 holes of golf that makes our club as good as any in Palm Beach County. Beautiful new practice facilities. Upgraded outdoor dining areas. We have Chef Nick, a person that has strong core values and will make the skills of our culinary team rise to greater heights. We have Mason and his infectious enthusiasm creating a new vibrant culture in our golf service operation. We have a new men’s locker room and a golf shop that we can be proud to show our guests.
Steve Yager is leaving us. Thank you for leaving the Lost City Golf Club much better than you found it. Best of luck with your next chapter in Tennessee. We have started our search for a new Director of Golf Course Maintenance. Tom Fazio is helping us with our search. We are confident that our next Director of Golf Course Maintenance will be an asset to our Club.
We have received many positive comments about our recent elimination of the 20% service charge added to each Food & Beverage transaction and the elimination of our Food & Beverage Minimum Charge. Both created problems over the years and upset many of our members. We now have an Annual Service Charge that rewards frequent users of our Club’s dining facilities. Why the need for a Service Charge at all? We are always in competition with other businesses in our area for staff. We compete with other clubs, public restaurants, Home Depot, you name it. We do our best to offer a competitive wage to all of our Food & Beverage Staff Members. Public restaurants pay a much lower wage than we do but their staff’s compensation is heavily subsidized by gratuities from their patrons. Good public restaurants have hundreds of patrons a day. Their staff members make hundreds of dollars a day in gratuities. To compete we use our Food & Beverage Service Charge Dollars to provide a high hourly wage for our Food & Beverage Staff Members. Our Food & Beverage Staff Members get a steady paycheck year-round with little fluctuation.
Many private clubs subsidize their Food & Beverage Operations with Member Dues. Our Club chooses to invest a large percentage of our Member Dues into our Golf Course Maintenance Department, a greater percentage than most clubs, we are a Golf Club. The clubs that subsidize their Food & Beverage Operations with Member Dues tend to pay their Food & Beverage Staff Members more than we do. We do our best to overcome these labor force challenges by providing a friendly work environment and by expressing genuine concern and care for all of our staff members. The Food & Beverage Industry has had a 75% turnover rate during the best of years. During the pandemic, it has been EXTREMELY challenging to keep our team together. A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR MEMBERS FOR ALWAYS TREATING OUR STAFF WITH KINDNESS & RESPECT!! Our staff speaks highly of you all. Rueben our Building Maintenance Manager worked for Comcast and was one of the thousands of employees
At Lost City Golf Club, we thank him for his efforts pretty much every day. He works hard, he cares and we appreciate his efforts and we praise him often. He may have made a few dollars more at Comcast but here he is a valued part of our small team. Thank you all for your patience and understanding throughout the pandemic. We know some of you strongly disagree with the Club’s Protocols. Hopefully, you understand we are doing our best to ensure everyone can come to the Club and feel safe. We will get through this. It will diminish significantly at some point soon and we can all go back to a more normal club experience. Many of you do not realize the amount of time your Board Members and Committee Members put in to make the Lost City Golf Club the best it can be. Emails, phone calls, texts, Zooms, and personal meetings are going on approximately 16 hours a day, every day. They are all passionate about making the Club better and deserve your respect and thanks. Here’s to an INCREDIBLE 2022!!! Leo McMahon General Manager Lost City Golf Club
As I write this newsletter
piece, the Omicron variant is spreading rapidly, Covid infection is rising and everyone, vaccinated or not, is becoming increasingly careful. With our members’ health and safety our first priority, Management and the House Committee are feeling our way through these murky waters. That said, we are turning back towards outdoor events and mask wearing when indoors for the short term. Staff will be wearing masks indoors and out for the time being. We will continue to offer a la carte dinner Monday evenings with an emphasis on outdoor seating, Pub Nights on Wednesdays with indoor and outdoor tables 6’ apart and TGIF will continue with indoor seating only in the Grill Room as well as outdoor seating. The TGIF buffet will be set up in the Dining Room where we ask you to wear masks while choosing your meal. Please be respectful of each other and staff during these tricky times — we would all love to be back to normal but we’re not there yet!
A few news notes for January — the first monthly GAME NIGHT is scheduled for Wednesday, January 5 at 5:00pm. Put together your own group for cards — Canasta, Poker, Bridge, whatever — or any other game you like and join us, either indoors or out, for some friendly competition, BUY ONE GET ONE DRINKS, and then finish up with a special Pub Night menu. You get to enjoy each other’s company and we do the clean up. Once we get this going, we’re thinking tournaments, challenges, etc. There could even be prizes! Trivia continues in 2022 on Wednesday, January 19 so sharpen your thinking caps and get ready to be smart. And speaking of Pub Night, I hope you are all paying attention to the menu changes that Chef Nick has been making. Tried and true favorites are still around -- but with flavor and presentation enhancements! -- but new, more gourmet treats are emerging with choices worthy of any Pub/Bistro for casual dining. All I can say is "More, please."
Murder most foul which was scheduled to find its way to Lost City on Saturday, Jan 29th has been postponed till April 30. This is an entirely indoor event which we did not feel we could hold at this time. A Dinner/Murder Mystery evening awaits you with arrival at 6pm for preliminaries and dinner seating by 6:45pm. That’s all we can say now — but it will be a wild night not to be missed! Lastly, a few news notes for January — once more we will feature free cappuccino for the month to welcome in the New Year. And don’t forget, if you’re just not that hungry, you can always select to have just soup and salad bar at any TGIF buffet. Just tell your server and you will be charged accordingly.
The Professional Staff hopes that you and your family had a safe & great holiday season! We are looking forward to a great start to the new year and have some fun and competitive events scheduled for the month of January. The TGIF Events will resume every Friday beginning on January 7th.
