April 2022 Newsletter

Page 1

With the end of March in sight (or in the rearview mirror depending on when you read this) we are rapidly approaching the end of our first “season” with our new golf course, men’s locker room, and golf pro shop. In addition, this season has introduced the membership to a new Director of Golf, a new Golf Course Superintendent, and a new Chef. Having new folks has its pluses and minuses. On the plus side, they bring their enthusiasm and new ideas to Lost City. On the minus side, they have no historical knowledge or background. As a result, there have been some bumps in the road which they have responded to and, for the most part, resolved. This brings me to a request for membership. We all have thoughts about changes that have been made or changes we would like to see made. Minor items or suggestions may be discussed with the department directors but I would ask that more significant issues/comments/suggestions/questions be directed to our General Manager or to the Board member that chairs the committee for the area of concern. The Board and its committees are made up of members with a vested interest in the current and future operations of the Club and we work with the General Manager to deliver the best experience for all of our members. We are the group responsible to deal with member concerns. We can all celebrate where we are at the “End of Season” party on April 9th. Hopefully, our snowbirds can enjoy a few more weeks here before the hot weather drives them back north. We have come a long way in the last year and have started planning for what’s ahead. Let’s all appreciate the progress that has been made and enjoy the LCGC experience.

Don Greenhalgh, President.

President’s Message

Dear Lost City Golf Club Members,

General Manager

“It’s not about who wins or loses, what you score, or how much money you make that matters in the end. It’s not about fame, fortune, or vanity. What matters most are the friendships you forge, how you care for and love those who share the journey with you, and how many others you help along the way. That’s what lasts. That’s how you’ll be remembered. You can bet on it.” Mark Frost, “The Match” To escape the increasingly bad news on the TV, I have been listening to an audio book written by Mark Frost who also wrote The Greatest Game Ever Played,” a book about the first American amateur to win the US Open in 1913. “The Match” is about a golf match set up by a couple wealthy businessmen and golf aficionados in 1956. One team consisted of top professionals Ben Hogan & Byron Nelson and the other team was made up of top amateurs Harvey Ward & Ken Venturi. The book details the backgrounds of the four players and their life travails up until the day of The Match: Ben Hogan realizing he was going to finish out of the money in a tournament in California, intentionally hooked his ball out of bounds into an orange grove so he could load up on oranges for food that coming week; Byron Nelson borrowed money from his in-laws to stay out on tour and paid them back immediately after winning a substantial check. Learning about the friendships that intertwined these four men, golf in America and its place in our nation’s history has been very insightful for me. To return to the above quote from the book, let’s always remember that what’s important about Golf and the Lost City Golf Club is their serving as an incredible vehicle to create friendships, share journeys with others and help people. It doesn’t matter what your background was or is, this applies to all of us. ·

Let’s begin this House Committee report with a shoutout to an outstanding committee that has given and continues to give their all with enthusiasm and creativity no matter the issue at hand. Whether they’re focused on drumming up lunch business or planning a shindig, these stalwart five deserve a round of applause as they begin another year of service to Lost City: (In alphabetical order) Joan Billings, Liz Bond, Giselle Johnson, Ann Snyder and Cindy Sykes. Our thanks to you all! Now for two other pieces of business before we get to a roundup of upcoming events. Firstly, as TGIFs become less busy, please help us allocate staff efficiently by ordering your first drink at the indoor bar whether dining inside or outdoors. During the course of your meal, the staff will be happy to serve you refills! And while we’re on the topic of TGIF, if you’re playing but NOT planning to stay for dinner, please email Mihai directly that you won’t be there so he has an accurate count for setup. Secondly, also with an eye to staff allocation and, most importantly, providing you, our members, with the best possible experience, we are instituting a policy of a one week prior cutoff date for reservations for “special” evenings. It’s just become too difficult to allow last minute reservations as well as plan menus and staffing properly. Our frantic Winter Season may be winding down, but there’s still plenty in store at Lost City this month. “April in Paris” will transport you to the City of Lights on Saturday, April 9th when we celebrate Spring and all its glory as well as bid farewell to many of our snowbird members. Cocktails are scheduled for 6:30pm with socializing planned for the outdoor patio. Although drinks will be available both indoors and out, our butlered hors d’oeuvres will only be served outdoors. Dinner with food stations featuring French Bistro favorites will follow. And, of course, there will be dancing to a live band, “The Fabulons” also outdoors. Reservations are being taken for both indoors and outdoors with both areas limited so don’t wait to make plans! Dress is Smart Casual, Jackets Suggested.

Easter Brunch is scheduled for Sunday, April 17th with a lavish buffet from 11:30am to 2:30pm. Expect to find all your Easter favorites there — carvings, omelet stations, salads. Seating is both indoors and outdoors — please specify when you make your reservation. New this year will be an Easter Egg Hunt for the children (sorry, young at heart doesn’t count.) Pub Night continues every Wednesday evening through April with that favorite, Trivia Night, scheduled for Wednesday, April 20th. April goes out not like a lamb but with a strong finish as Murder Most Foul comes to Lost City on Saturday, April 30th. This is all very hush-hush, but there will be dastardly doings with mayhem to follow that you won’t want to miss! Suffice it to say, you don’t always know who your friends are and what they’re capable of…This is an indoor-only event with the bar opening for drinks and hors d’oeuvres at 5:30pm followed by Host Welcome at 6:30pm. Dinner during the evening will feature a three course menu with a choice of entrees. The dress is Country Club Casual. Attendance is strictly LIMITED to the first 100 Reservations so don’t wait to make yours!

Lost City WGA is in the Florida State Golf Association Inter-Club Finals 4/12 &13. YAY! Lost City WGA qualified for the STATE Championship with 10 other teams. To get there we had to overcome the Old Palm Golf Club team in a playoff series last month for our region. The event will be held at TPC Treviso Bay in Naples. The format is 36 holes of net Stableford stroke play. The team with the highest Stableford points total wins. We are sending Laura Feick, Gina Devine, Debbie Kingsley, and Martha Greenhalgh to represent us. Wish them well and many Kudos and thanks to our captains Martha Greenhalgh, Mary Lou Neagle, and the rest of the team.

Flag Tournament (New) March 15: Each person received a Flag with their course handicap score. Flags were planted wherever the player reached that score! Holes 17 and 18 had a lot of flags planted! Be sure to sign up to play in the 18-hole stand aside scramble followed by a delicious luncheon.

Learning center

Block vs. Random Practice Practicing the same shot from the same place multiple times is block practice and is best when you are trying to learn a new motion or change a motor pattern. Hitting every shot from a different condition is random practice and best when you are trying to transfer skills to take to the golf course. Psychologists have proven that even if your motion isn’t perfect, when you do more random practice the things you learn stay with you better and help you more effectively take those skills to the golf course. Knowing this, make sure that much of your practice is random in nature and not just the same shot over and over. You will more effectively perform on the course, especially in pressure situations. Posters of women golfers through the years decorated the walls, while greens’ flags, tees & golf balls were the centerpieces. Golf course news Although the golf courses have been receiving applications of fertilizer that last a few weeks, there are still some areas that need to get caught up (approaches, rough). We are starting to see great recovery in weak areas where we were low in fertility and had received heavy cart traffic. Thank you to all who strive to stay off these sensitive areas as they continue to recover. You might have noticed blue striped lines near the fronts of our approaches. These are indicators where we would like to have cart traffic exit the fairways. We will change the location of these blue lines as needed keeping an eye on wear areas in the rough. Thursday afternoon closures each week have been a huge success for our team allowing us to complete some of our detailed jobs in 3 hours instead of 2 to 3 afternoons of “in play” time. Not only are we more productive, but this keeps our entire team safe and together while accomplishing our weekly goals.
