COMMUNITY EDUCATION CATALOG SPRING 2024

The LMC Community Education Program features fee-based, not-for-credit courses that are designed for personal and professional growth and enrichment. You do not need to be a student of Los Medanos College to take part in our programs. We are passionate about serving our East County communities with innovative enrichment programs that help our participants find inspiration and motivation. We offer life-long learning lectures, online fundamental skills, online career training, and entrepreneurship workshops.

LIFELONG LEARNING CENTER Our program offers lectures on specialized topics to provide life-long learning opportunities for those who are seeking enrichment opportunities. Our lectures are taught by Los Medanos Professors who are experts in their field and passionate about the topics they are addressing. Lectures are typically 2 hours in length and are taught on a variety of subjects including history, economics, art, politics, current events and more. Shipbuilding: Lauritsen, Fulton, Stevens and Hacker shipbuilders.

January 16, 2024 The Delta waterways are historically the transportation highways of our region. Join us as we discover the shipbuilding expertise that moved people and goods throughout the Delta, prototyped the WWII Navy PT boats, outraced the Federal Revenuer boats, and made history.

Mystery of the Great Stone House

February 1, 2024 Local author, Dan Hanel, will share a multimedia presentation about the fascinating history of John Marsh and his Great Stone House. Marsh was California’s first doctor and the first American to settle in Contra Costa County.

Creating the Intimate Connection - Class One: Introduction to Basic Emotional Intimacy

February 14, 2024 The basic concepts, beliefs, and attitudes that build the psychological foundation for the development of emotional intimacy will be presented. The psychological approach will be from the cognitive/behavioral point of view.

Death at the Healing Waters

February 15, 2024 Dan Hanel, a local author, will give a multimedia presentation on the history of Byron Hot Springs Resort, once a famed healing waters retreat in the western U.S. It transformed during WWII into a secret interrogation center, later becoming a Greek Orthodox Church retreat. Hanel delves into these historical phases in his novel “Death at the Healing Waters.”

Prohibition and Bootlegging: Delta Roots.

February 20, 2024 The largest Federal Revenue Agent raid on illegal liquor production in Northern California during Prohibition unfolded on Bethel Island. Join us as we explore production of licensed sacramental wine, unlicensed home wine making, and distillation of spirits.

Creating the Intimate Connection Intimate Verbal Communication - Class Two:

February 21, 2024 In this class, we look at the behavior that takes the cognitive concepts from the last class and applies them to a couple’s day-to-day realities. As bonding mechanisms go, we start with how a couple communicates on an intimate level. In this class, I will present the ineffective ways of sending intimate communication and then present ways of communicating that create the possibility of being intimate.

Creating the Intimate Connection - Class Three: Conflict Resolution: Contracts for Real Harmony

February 28, 2024 In this class, we will discuss how to resolve conflicts that occur within a marital partnership. Most people believe that conflict in a marriage is negative, but conflict is normal in any relationship. If there is no conflict, there is a problem. It shows that someone isn’t being real and is avoiding the conflict which won’t work in the long run. Avoidance of conflict is truly an intimacy killer.

Ghosts of Black Diamond

February 29, 2024 Local author, Dan Hanel, will share a multimedia presentation about Black Diamond Mines. Learn how tombstones in Rose-Hill cemetery still show evidence of connections to mystic symbols and secret societies.

Creating the Intimate Connection - Class Four: Learning to Love Yourself, the First Step to a Successful Relationship

March 6, 2024 In a very real, direct, down-to-earth manner, I will teach in this class the attitudes and behaviors that make self-love a reality. In this class, you will learn how to set better psychological boundaries in your life, improve your self-esteem, communicate with yourself like you would a lover, and handle your anger more constructively. You will learn about the differences between aggressive, passive, and assertive behavior.

Beneath the Tangled Vines

March 14, 2024 Local author, Dan Hanel, will share a multimedia presentation about Winehaven, once the world’s largest winery. The Winehaven castle rose from the ashes of the Great Earthquake of 1906. Learn about its role during the California wine wars of the early 1900s.

WWI and WWII in the Delta: Defense Industry, Military and Food Production.

March 19, 2024 The romantic vision of the Andrew Jackson era contrasts with the West’s economic reality. Federal government support shaped Western agriculture, marked by agribusiness from the start, such as at Rancho Los Megaños. The narrative includes Native American vaqueros, Caterpillar tractors in Stockton, and Delta’s pivotal role in feeding the world during wars, challenging the traditional image of the family farmer with a mule and plow.

Eastern and Antioch Electric Railway: Oakland Mole to Chico.

April 16, 2024 Electric railways were as popular as traditional railways in the early 20th Century often running in tandem to the same stations. Join us as we take a ride on the Eastern and Antioch Electric Railway!

Movies in the Delta: From Steamboat Round the Bend to the Young Indiana Jones.

May 21, 2024 The California Delta has played the role of “stand-in” since early silent movie days. Production costs too expensive to film The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1939) along the Mississippi River? The San Joaquin River near Bethel Island will happily “stand-in” for the role. Join us as we explore on-site film locations along the California Delta.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 101 We partner with our local cities and community partners to offer free, not-for-credit Entrepreneurship workshops that are focused on helping local small businesses in our community grow and expand their economic impact. We design our workshops to be hands-on and tailored to the businesses and industries we are serving. Our instructors are industry experts and entrepreneurs themselves.

Social Media for Business Owners/ Research and Demographics

January 19, 2024 In this course, business owners will learn the basics of how to build social media accounts. The class will cover the main social media platforms and you will learn what makes a “good” account, effective posts, scheduling and more.

Small Business Taxation and California Sales Tax

February 16, 2024 This workshop will provide information to help small business owners understand and meet their federal tax obligations. The workshop will cover basic IRS Tax Requirements.

Accounting and Bookkeeping

April 19, 2024 This course is an introduction to record keeping and bookkeeping requirements for small businesses. Accounting concepts are explained in “plain language” for the non-accountant.

GET INVOLVED! PROPOSE A COURSE LMC Lifelong Learning Adult Lectures Lifelong Learning Adult Lectures are fee-based, not-for-credit classes on specialized topics that are designed for personal growth and enrichment for attendees. Lectures are taught by individuals who are experts in their field and passionate about the topics they are addressing. Classes are typically 2 hours in length and are taught on a variety of subjects including history, economics, art, politics, current events and more. Classes may be presented on the main college campus in Pittsburg, at the Brentwood Center or on Zoom. Proposing a Course: LMC Community & Contract Education staff will review your completed Course Proposal Form and notify you by phone or email if it is approved. Keep in mind that the process for review can take anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks depending on the date of your submission. Consideration will be given to the appropriateness of the subject, its relevance to the mission of the program, availability of facilities, your qualifications, etc. Our intent is to offer a varied, balanced program that meets the needs and interests of the mature adult population. Classes shall not be used to promote political positions or candidates nor to sell or promote products or services. Compensation: Part-time and full-time faculty, as well as non-LMC employees, are compensated per Contra Costa Community College District Salary Schedule Appendix C-8, College Program Assistant VII, Range 1009, at an hourly rate of $80.72. Any lecture/course with fewer than ten paid registrations is subject to cancellation. Individuals participating in not-for-credit Community Education instruction may wish to contribute compensation towards Los Medanos College Foundation scholarships and/or program needs. We invite you to contribute your time, talent, and passion in a way that is both meaningful and rewarding to you.
