News for the Friends of Lutherans Outdoors in SD Keep the Campﬁres Burning Appeal is a Big Success! THANK YOU!!!

The response from individuals and congregations was tremendous! Our goal has been reached, and even surpassed, with generous gifts from thousands. This is truly humbling, and truly promising, for the future of Lutherans Outdoors. The Keep the Campfires Burning Appeal began at the end of 2020, and continued throughout the 2021 year. A goal of $1.2 million was created to help recover losses due to closure of our camps during this mentioned time period, and to stabilize the ministry for future service. Meeting this goal would allow Lutherans Outdoors to begin 2022 debt-free from any financial losses due to the pandemic. Campfires have been the galvanizing highlight for most everyone’s camp memories at Lutherans Outdoors. The campfire provides a time of inspiration, a time of joyous celebration, and a time of spiritual contemplation. These campfires needed to, and will continue to, keep burning at NeSoDak, Outlaw Ranch and Klein Ranch. THANK YOU to the many individuals and volunteers who helped in surpassing our goal. Keep the Campfires Burning Appeal Co-Chairs, Susan Leddy and Darcie Bien, along with Chair for Congregation Gifts, Rev. Dwight Stensgaard, need to be congratulated for moving the Appeal along for success. The biggest THANK YOU goes to YOU, all of the individuals and congregations that participated in a special event or responded to an ask. YOUR support makes it possible to continue burning these important, life-giving campfires at Outlaw Ranch, Klein Ranch, and NeSoDak. Lutherans Outdoors is excited to be a part of your life in 2022!

THE DIRECTOR’S PERSPECTIVE Paul Hanson, Executive Director

My favorite President of the United States was Josiah “Jed” Bartlet. President Bartlet was a fictional President from one of my favorite television shows of the early 2000’s The West Wing. President Bartlet’s catchphrase was “What’s next?” As we begin the year 2022, I ask the question, “What’s Next?” for Lutherans Outdoors. The transfer of ownership of the Joy Ranch site is completed. A successful Keep the Campfires Burning Appeal has resulted in $1.2+ million gifts from wonderful supporters of the ministry, allowing LO to begin 2022 debt-free. Lutherans Outdoors staff is complete with the addition of a new Associate Director, Randy Youngquist-Thurow, who started in January.

So, ”What’s Next?”... ...a complete 2022 summer camp schedule is in place for Outlaw Ranch, Klein Ranch, and NeSoDak. Registration is open and over 600 campers have registered by February 1st. Safety is the number one priority with the Christ-centered programs as we will continue to follow Covid-19 protocols. These protocols can be found at www.losd.org/safety. ...Outlaw Ranch and NeSoDak continue to offer year-round programmed retreats as well as opportunities for groups to rent the facilities. LO is hoping to return to 75% retreat occupancy as well. ...your continued prayers and monetary support. Your gifts enable Lutherans Outdoors to continue offering summer camp at low fees, hiring talented summer and year-round staff, and maintaining a large number of buildings and land. Your support is vital in keeping LO vibrant in sharing God’s love. ...and the biggest “What’s Next?” for Lutherans Outdoors is the beginning of an intentional deep dive into everything Lutherans Outdoors. Audits of each facet of Lutherans Outdoors will begin. Audits will be performed in areas including current Program, Staﬃng, Facilities, Governance, Marketing, Financial Development, and Philosophy. We will seek honest feedback from congregational leaders, individual supporters, participants, and staff to hone in the future of this great Outdoor Ministry. This is a very exciting endeavor! I want Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota to not only brag that we are the first choice for dynamic and innovative Christ-centered ministries…but to BE that first choice. WELCOME, RANDY YOUNGQUISTTHUROW! LO welcomes Randy Youngquist-Thurow as the Associate Director for Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota. As Associate Director, Randy will work closely with the LO Camp Directors in site operation, assist in areas of financial development, and most importantly, lead the discussions in forming the future of Lutherans Outdoors. Randy, a graduate of Augustana University, has worked in Lutheran Outdoor Ministry full-time for nearly 40 years. He served at Shetek Lutheran Ministries in Minnesota, Sugar Creek Bible Camp in Wisconsin, Camp Lutherlyn in Pennsylvania, and for the past 25 years as Executive Director at Agapé + Kure Beach Ministries in North Carolina. As a kid, Randy lived in the Black Hills at Outlaw Ranch for the summer of 1965, while his dad managed Bob Marshall Ranch. He also attended NeSoDak as a young camper. Randy’s Dad is a rostered pastor in the SD Synod and just recently retired from serving the Dell Rapids congregation. Randy is a rostered leader in the ELCA – a Deacon since 1993. Randy is also a Certified Camp Director (CCD) through the American Camp Association (ACA).

WELCOME, JEAN PULSCHER! Outlaw welcomes Jean Pulscher as the new Food Service Manager. Jean was born and raised in Flandreau, SD. Married to Shannon Pulscher (Outlaw Facility Manager), they have three children, Jaycie, Colton, and Kylee. Prior to moving to Custer, Jean worked for Flandreau Public Schools for 10 years. “I love watching and cheering on my kids at all of their activities. I am very excited to start working at Outlaw and being a part of this ministry! “

JOY RANCH TRANSFER COMPLETE

In November of 2019, the Board of Directors of Lutherans Outdoors formed a Joy Ranch Task Force. The Task Force was to bring recommendations to the Board to secure a successful future of this beautiful site of Outdoor Ministry. The Task Force returned in the fall of 2020 with a report that included the following: “Given our need to be good stewards of limited resources, we believe it best to seek another entity to operate Joy Ranch that can more broadly define its program oﬀerings and make it successful and sustainable into the future.” The Task Force then began the process of transferring the ownership and operation of Joy Ranch to a new 501(c)-3 entity, preferably from the Watertown community.

On January 3rd of 2022, Lutherans Outdoors oﬃcially transferred the ownership of Joy Ranch to a new entity named Joy Ranch of South Dakota. The transfer included all land and building assets. Joy Ranch of South Dakota wants to “assure Joy Ranch visitors, participants, and donors that the mission of Joy Ranch, as initially presented, will most definitely continue.” Lutherans Outdoors is proud to have been successful in the construction of Joy Ranch and the beginning and infancy of the site and its programs. It is truly a place for all who visit with quality of life issues. Any net proceeds resulting from the transfer will be used by Lutherans Outdoors to further support the ministries of Klein Ranch, Outlaw Ranch, and NeSoDak.

A DINNER TO DEVOUR

Lutherans Outdoors can provide life-giving experiences in many different ways. NeSoDak held its Scandinavian Smorgasbord last November 12-14th. This yearly feast has, at its centerpiece, the Scandinavian delicacy of Lutefisk. Nearly 200 people had a ticket to the three possible sittings that weekend. Linda Ellis, a resident of the Aberdeen area, decided to be the deliverer of the Lutefisk to several people back home on that Sunday. She arrived at NeSoDak, filled her car with twelve to-go meals of all the delicious food offerings, and headed down the road to deliver to the hungry people waiting for her. One of those recipients of Linda’s hospitality was her 103-year-old mother, Naomi Alexander. Naomi, who often claims to have “no appetite”, cleaned her plate!!! Lutherans Outdoors is honored to have provided Naomi, Linda, and several others, with a wonderful opportunity of food, fellowship, and fun.
