News for the Friends of Lutherans Outdoors in SD

WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY!

This past summer I got the wonderful opportunity to be a Volunteer at NeSoDak as a Deck Hand. As soon as I met the other sta , we just instantly clicked, and we were all on the same energy level the entire week. I was especially happy to be working along with the sta who was there when I was a camper. I also got the wonderful opportunity to do some shing (A LOT of it), hang out with the sta , hang out with some of the campers, play games, be a part of the Christ Hike, and to be with Rev. Becky Senner and her con rmation students. Tuesday, during Con rmation Time, she asked us what our highs and lows were. Now that the week is over, I can nally answer that question. My high for the week was just being there with everyone and watching them grow closer to God. My low was leaving everybody I had grown closer to and not knowing if we’ll see each other again. I hope to see them next year. I’ve been going to NeSoDak since 1-2-3 Camp. After 1-2-3 Camp, I went to ve years of Fishing Camp along with Con rmation Camp one of those same years. NeSoDak has been, and always will be, a special place for me and I want to keep going back.

Thanks everyone for the amazing week I had and who gave me this opportunity!

(Carson is the grandchild of Revs. Rick and Becky Senner, long-time LO camp enthusiasts!)

Carson at his rst year of Fishing Camp.

Carson, this past summer as a volunteer.

WELCOME, KLAIRE!

Outlaw Ranch welcomed Program Director, Klaire Hudson last May. We have enjoyed her joyful spirit and energy at Outlaw Ranch this past summer. She is a great asset to the ministry of Lutherans Outdoors through her work at Outlaw Ranch.

A few words from Klaire, “Hi Outlaw (and LO) Family! For those of you I wasn’t able to meet during my two summers on staff (‘18, ‘19), my name is Klaire! I am a Minnesota native currently living at Outlaw (in the final stages of wedding planning with my fiancé Noah!), experiencing the joy of being called back to outdoor ministry! I feel blessed by this opportunity to serve as your Program Director, and can’t wait to continue meeting, exploring with, and sharing God’s love to each and every one of you! We are so excited to continue this adventure, and feel overjoyed to be called back Home! See you under the ponderosas!”

Join us for Christmas in Branson

Join Paul Hanson, Lutherans Outdoors Executive Director, and Rev. David and Beverly Wildermuth on a five-day Christmas Event to Branson, Missouri.

THE DIRECTOR’S PERSPECTIVE

This past summer I was able to be at each Family Camp week at Outlaw Ranch and provide a time when participants could come together to hear about the current happenings at Lutherans Outdoors and the three sites. Many great questions were posed, and I think you should hear the answers to some of the questions as well. Here are the top three.

What were the sale proceeds of Atlantic Mountain Ranch used for?

The sale proceeds were deposited into a Designated Funds account and have been used at Outlaw Ranch during the past three years:

1. The magni cent Pavilion was completed this spring and has been used for the past two summers to provide a space to be together for meals, lectures, crafts, and so much more.

2. The demolition of the old Program Center and the construction of a new building where the Camp Store is located on the lower level with the upper level providing a sta lounge in the summer months and housing for a Retreat Host in the non-summer months.

3. A portion of the new Boiler and heating system for the Dining Hall. The old boiler could not be repaired any longer. It was over 50 years old!

4. New Corrals and a Tack Shed are being built, providing much improved areas to care for our beloved horses.

5. A new, safer Deck on the Lodge will be completed this fall, allowing for outside socializing or study.

6. And nally, $150,000 will be deposited to our Outlaw Ranch Endowment Fund with the South Dakota Community Fund, ensuring a future funding stream for ongoing expenses at Outlaw Ranch.

What is the number one issue facing Lutherans Outdoors currently?

I feel the answer to this question is two-fold.

1. The ability to fundraise the needed dollars to continue o ering programs to our participants at lower fees. All campers, whether children or adults and families, receive an automatic discount of $ 200.00. This subsidized fee is recovered through the many gifts from individuals and congregations, nearly $1,000,000 each year.

2. The ability to hire a su cient amount of talented summer ministry team members each year. Lutherans Outdoors faces obstacles of competitive wages and college internship programs.

We’ve been hearing of deep program and other internal audits of Lutherans Outdoors. Where is Lutherans Outdoors at in this endeavor?

At the October Board of Directors meeting, the Board will be presented with a plan for future program emphasis for Lutherans Outdoors. At the same time, the Board will be given a plan for the other audit areas of Lutherans Outdoors including Philosophy, Marketing, Sta ng, Facility, Equipment, Governance, and more.

It is exciting to be a part of this great ministry called Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota, with its rich history and strong programs. The energy for a tremendous future is high. Come along with us. You won’t regret it.

THANK YOU!

Your generosity in 2022 made it possible for people of all ages to experience the BOUNDLESS love of God.

As you journey through life, we hope you take the 2022 summer theme with you, “BOUNDLESS”.

“I pray that you and all of God’s people will understand what is called wide or long or high or deep. I want you to know all about Christ’s love, although it is too wonderful to be measured. Then your lives will be filled with all that God is.” ~ Ephesians 3:18-19 CEV

God’s love, goodness, welcome, forgiveness, and generosity are BEYOND MEASURE.

Save the date! Registration for Summer 2023 will open November 14th at LOSD.org.
