News for the Friends of Lutherans Outdoors in SD MY FIRST SUMMER AT CAMP BY VICKI FOSS, DIRECTOR OF NESODAK

Wonderful, crazy, life-changing, exhausting, exhilarating, mathematically challenging, mechanically challenging, soul-filling, and amazing. How do you even start explaining some of these descriptors? Let me tell you about my first summer at NeSoDak as the Camp Director. Please know that I started in March of 2021, coming fresh off a year of closure due to the pandemic. Walking into Sorensen Lodge on my first day on the job at NeSoDak Bible Camp, I was overcome with many conflicting emotions. NeSoDak is a BIG deal and more than a bit intimidating. At almost 80 years old and full of traditions, alumni, stories, and huge personalities, the camp is so unique and beloved by pretty much every person I have met since the move. I was worried that I would not be enough for this ministry.

And then, I met the NeSoDak and Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota team. Wow! What an amazing and passionate group of people who all have HUGE hearts for Outdoor Ministry! I am truly blessed to be a part of this team! The first two months I was on site, the Lutherans Outdoors staff waded through the details of how to keep campers safe during a pandemic. How we clean, how we serve food, and how we physically distance campers were just some of the challenges the team faced. Creative thinking and the ability and willingness to try new things by the staff made what could have been overwhelming, into a new adventure. Not being able to get onto the closed college campuses to recruit summer camp staff was a huge challenge. I am so incredibly grateful to LO’s partners in ministries such as Lutheran Campus Ministries, other camps, pastors, and alumni who did their best to find summer staff for not only NeSoDak but all camps this summer. With the camp being shut down for 18 months, turning everything back on was nerve-wracking. Thankfully, God put the right people at the right time in the right place, and we weathered many storms! The statement I found myself saying over and over was, “I don’t know, but we will figure it out!” Whatever “it” was at the time, this leadership team and summer staff rolled with the punches, and we made things work. This amazing summer and leadership staff “Figured it out!” (With the help of a lot of hand sanitizer, duct tape, and baling twine.) With the crazy picture I painted for you, my first summer at NeSoDak was absolutely wonderful. I am incredibly hopeful for all that is coming this fall and winter at camp as we focus on retreat ministries and prepare for a “Boundless-ly” fun and fantastic summer of 2022!

WELCOME, THOMAS! Join us in welcoming Thomas Wishard to the Lutherans Outdoors Year-round Staff as Program Director at NeSoDak. Thomas was born and raised in Watertown South Dakota. A recent graduate of Lake Area Technical College with a dual degree in Robotics and Electronic Systems, he spends most free time in the field or on the lake, hunting and fishing. From Thomas, ”Camp is truly my second home. I’ve spent the last four summers at NeSoDak working every position from deck-hand to program staff. Some of my best friends and fondest memories have been made during my time with Lutherans Outdoors. I am honored and beyond excited to step into the role of Program Director at NeSoDak and can’t wait for many more memories and friends to be made during this journey!”

WELCOME, MACKEE! Join us in welcoming Mackee Hoffmann to the Lutherans Outdoors Year-round Staff as Retreat Host at Outlaw Ranch! Mackee was born and raised in North Dakota but has spent her adult life bouncing around MN, IA, WI, WA, and now SD. Mackee has Bachelors’ degrees in Studio Art and Communication from Concordia College Moorhead, and a Master’s in Diaconal Ministry from Wartburg Theological Seminary. She likes to spend free time reading, running, cycling, hiking, backpacking, fishing, baking, creating, and playing violin. After leaving long term volunteering at Holden Village, finishing a final year at Seminary, spending 3 months working/living on a berry farm, and most recently finishing a chaplain residency, Mackee is excited and grateful for the adventures that await at Outlaw Ranch!

THANK YOU, JAKE! Jake Hanson resigned from his position as Development Director for LO on July 16th, 2021. Jake served Lutherans Outdoors for six years. Prior to his time as Development Director, he served as the Camp Director at NeSoDak as well as Joy Ranch. Lutherans Outdoors misses his enthusiasm in striving for excellence at the camps of Lutherans Outdoors. Jake’s love for all that is outdoors (canoeing, hunting, fishing) has been a valuable asset to the ministry in all of his roles. The good news is that Jake and family (Emily and Jep) remain in South Dakota as he now works with Pheasants Forever. This new role will certainly highlight Jake’s gifts and passion for the outdoors. Jake is also excited to continue to nurture the ministry of Lutherans Outdoors as a volunteer.

THE DIRECTOR’S PERSPECTIVE As many of you know, the transfer of Joy Ranch ownership and operations to another non-profit organization will happen by the end of 2021. It has been very comforting to hear from many that you support this very difficult decision made by the Board of Directors earlier this year. The first time I set foot on Joy Ranch was in December of 2009. I was attending a gathering of outdoor ministry people from several camps in Minnesota and the Dakotas. We were brought to Joy Ranch to see what had been started and to hear the vision of a donor who wanted to provide a place to increase the quality of life for all that came there. Never did I know that in future years, I would be a part of the ministry that happened at Joy Ranch. When I started with Lutherans Outdoors in 2015 as Operations Director, I immediately took on additional responsibility as Joy Ranch Interim Director for a few months as the search for a new Joy Ranch Director was conducted. It was at this time that I saw how Joy Ranch was serving many people in many ways. I also was able to serve LO as the Joy Ranch Director beginning in December of 2017 until I assumed the position of Executive Director in 2019. Joy Ranch is unique. Joy Ranch is special. Joy Ranch has been and will continue to be, a place of many memories. Lutherans Outdoors is so proud to have been an organization that birthed Joy Ranch and played a role in its infancy. Many volunteers and staff have made it a special place in their lives as well. We know that it will continue to be a special place for thousands into the future. Thank you to the countless people who worked and volunteered at Joy Ranch, making it a special place in my heart. Lutherans Outdoors wishes the new organization---Joy Ranch of South Dakota---all the best in bringing their vision to meet the mission!

KEEP THE CAMPFIRES BURNING UPDATE

As Lutherans Outdoors moves into the last quarter of the Keep the Campfires Burning Appeal timeframe, we have received a tremendous response so far from faithful supporters of the ministry. Lutherans Outdoors has received in gifts and pledges an amount of nearly $800,000 towards the goal of $1.2 million. These gifts have come from hundreds of individual donors as well as congregational gifts, synodical gifts, campership gifts, special events, and memorials. Thank you to all who have said “YES” already. We look forward to the many gifts yet to be received. The Keep the Campfires Burning Appeal was created to aid in the financial challenges resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. Reaching our goal of $1.2 million in gifts during 2021 will result in moving forward in 2022 without debt and enable LO to continue offering quality, life-giving programs and to maintain and improve our facilities.
