{ITINERARY} DAY 1 We will all meet at the workshop at 8am. Please bring all your painting gear and put it in the white tent (gazebo) on the lawn. If the weather is glorious (fingers crossed) we will all meet there each morning. If not, we will meet inside the workshop entrance. The first hour or so will be welcoming everyone, the chance to buy brushes (We have two Lori Putnam Brush Sets) all of our brushes will be available. You can also buy paints and we can sort out Gamsol too. That morning Lori will give a demonstration and then you will all be free to paint around the grounds of the workshop for the day. That evening Rosemary will have an welcome evening in the garden with plenty of food and drinks. You will all be made most welcome and we will make sure there's plenty of food and drink for everyone. If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know as soon as possible. DAY 2 We will meet at the workshop at 9am. Please be on time so we can drive to the locations promptly, together. From there, we will drive together to The Salt and Pepper Pots in Cowling. This is a 5 minute drive from the workshop. There is parking available, but it’s road-side parking. Therefore, if as many of you as possible can share cars to this location it would be ideal. There are no toilets up there, so you’d need to head back to the workshop if you need the loo. Make sure you bring layers because it can be chilly on the moors! We will be there the whole day so make sure you bring everything with you. DAY 3 We will meet at the workshop at 8.30am. If you feel more familiar with your
surroundings by this point you are welcome to meet us at the location. Location still to be confirmed but it is likely to be Bolton Abbey or The Strid (which is within the grounds of the Abbey). You can google these landmarks - both gorgeous. Again, we will be there for the whole day so make sure you bring everything with you. DAY 4 We may go to Malham Cove on this day. We may stay more local. Either way, bring layers! The start time for this will be confirmed during the week. Each day I will go through what is happening the next day so everyone is in the picture. Depending on the location will depend on the time we meet. Be ready between 8am and 8.30am. In the evening Lori will be doing a landscape demonstration at the workshop. You are all invited of course and this is included within your workshop fee. Please note this is an “extra’’ and not a lesson as such. Hors d'oeuvre and drinks will be provided although I would suggest grabbing something to eat after the workshop if you are a hungry person! The demonstration will be from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. This will also be open to the general public so it’s best you get there around 6pm to get a good seat! DAY 5 There are several places (100’s actually) we could go and paint - but we don’t know yet where Lori wants to go, and all of the above is weather pending. There’s talks that we might go to Ilkley Moors and paint from the Cow & Calf. The views there are gorgeous and the sunsets are fantastic. Think flexibility and so long as you are there for the first morning at the workshop, the rest of the week will be explained when you’re here.

{MORNINGS & EVENINGS} Each morning we will all meet at the workshop and then drive out from there as a group. I will lead you out to each location so you know exactly where to go. If you want to meet us at a certain location, please let us know so we don’t wait for you. The address for the workshop is. Carr Head Hall, Carr Head Lane, Cowling, West Yorkshire, BD22 0LD As you drive up Carr Head Lane, we are 1 mile up on the left hand side. Look at the gate posts and make sure you see Carr Head Hall on the gates. Drive up there and half way on your left there is a little lane. If you could all park your cars at the car park at the bottom and then walk back up to the workshop that would be appreciated. We have all of our staff in during the week so there isn’t the parking space. Please use the overflow carpark. After you’ve finished painting for the day (Lori will be finishing up around 4.30-5pm) the evenings are your own. We will arrange for several meet ups which you are all welcome to join. These will be arranged each day so please don’t worry about this too much right now, just know the first night we will all meet in Rosemary's garden. All packed lunches are included for the week. We will discuss this more on the first morning, but for now I just need to know if you’d like them, and what you would like! From previous experience, they are absolutely yummy and well worth opting in for. Your options are meat, vegetarian
or vegan. If you look in the back of this booklet you’ll see a form - please have this filled out for the first morning (or sooner if you are organised) and then I can make sure it’s dealt with. We will have a welcome evening in Rosemary's garden the first evening. We will also have an evening later in the week (to be confirmed) where we all eat together in Rosemary's garden again. You must know that food and drink is covered for both of those evenings, as is your packed lunch. We will be cooking and making the food on site, so please do let us know in plenty of time if you have any special dietary requirements.
{MAP & TRAVEL}
AIRPORT PICK UP BY TAXI If you need me to arrange a taxi for you from Manchester airport I can with pleasure, but you need to let me know ASAP. We can always cancel this taxi with enough notice, but it's not as easy to get you one once you're here. (without paying alot!). My friend, Abi is a taxi driver and is charging around £55 from the airport to your hotel. This is the best rate you’ll find and trust me, it’s worth pre booking this as taxis at the airport on the day will be hard to find and double the price. AIRPORT TO YORKSHIRE BY TRAIN If you’d like to make your own way to Yorkshire that’s absolutely fine. If you’d like to pre book your train you can go through this website www.thetrainline.com from Manchester, you need to get the train from Manchester Airport to Leeds.
From Leeds get the train to Skipton (If you’re staying at the Travel Lodge) or to Steeton and Silsden if you’re are staying at our onsite accommodation. You can pay for and book your train tickets when you get to the Manchester Airport Train Station if you wish. The choice is yours. CAR RENTAL INFORMATION If you search the link below this is the cheapest car rental we have found. A rough idea, Kathy Anderson managed to get a car for the week at $259 (US Dollars). www.kemwel.com Many folks are willing to share rides. The good thing is that the first morning we are painting at the workshop and not leaving the grounds. There will be plenty of time throughout the day to ask folks if you need a lift sorting. I’ve tried to arrange with many of you to share, but like I say, the first day we can iron out any issues if needs be regarding transport.
{Other INFORMATION} GAMSOL We will have Gamsol available for you to buy at the workshop. You don’t need to fly with it. We will also have Zest It Oil Paint Dillutant. It’s really popular in the UK. If you look on our website under ‘‘Zest It’’ you will see all the products we stock. MICHAEL HARDING PAINTS I have ordered plenty of Michael’s paints for you all. If you don’t have any of the paints on Michelle's materials list, we should have them, however we might not have the brand Gamblin - please ask us about this. You can buy paints from us throughout the week. If there’s any other specific colours other than those on Michelle's list, you will need to bring them with you. I have ordered extra bright greens too (a random selection) to try out. SHIPPING TO & FROM THE WORKSHOP If you’d like to ship your supplies to the workshop before you get here you can do with pleasure. Make sure you mark your name clearly on there. Our address is: Carr Head Hall, Carr Head Lane, Cowling, West Yorkshire, BD22 0LD. If you’d like to ship paintings and supplies when you leave, we can help you with this too. We will have to charge you, but we do get good rates with FedEx and DHL.
TEA & COFFEE The nearest place to buy coffee is the Co-op in Crosshills. They have a Costa machine there. If you’d like Starbucks, the nearest is Skipton. HOSPITALS & CHEMISTS If you have an emergency throughout the workshop please make sure you call me. We have a large hospital in Steeton (my village) which is less than 10 minutes from the workshop. This has an Accident & Emergency (A&E or ER) department. If you have any concerns about this, please talk to me. That leads me to mention allergies or medicine. If you have any issues, please let me know so I am aware and know to look out for you and help where I can. The nearest chemist is in Crosshills. CHARGERS & ELECTRONICS You will need a three prong grounded input to United Kingdom. Google it to make sure you bring the right adapter! BANKS Cash machines are available at all of the supermarkets, our nearest to the workshop- is The Co-op in Crosshills. Zezt It:

Brush CLEANING; a BRUSH makers TOP tips By Symi Jackson
W
e often get asked what the best way to clean your brushes is. Truthfully, there are so many different ways and it really does depend on which medium you’re using, how often you use your brushes, whether you are in a rush or whether you have time to clean them thoroughly. In short, there’s a million and one ways, so here are some tips as a basic rule, rest assured over time you’ll find your own neat way to do things. The main thing to remember is that cleaning your brushes is an important investment both of your time and your money. The more you look after your tools, the better they will serve you. WATERCOLOUR BRUSHES Cleaning watercolour brushes is easy! Grab your brushes and head to the sink. You can hold them under the tap and let the pigment wash off them with the flow of the water. Get yourself a bar of soap and use the palm of your hand to gently wipe the
brushes back and forth to ensure they are clean throughout. Squeeze the water out of the brush and reshape them. Store upright and condition them from time to time. Easy peasy. ACRYLIC BRUSHES You must ensure to clean your Acrylic brushes in-between each use; not doing so will allow the Acrylic paint to harden the bristles or fibres and bond them together. We recommend Synthetic brushes over Natural Hair brushes as a general rule since they withstand the abuse of Acrylic paint and they clean more easily. You must not let the Acrylic paint dry on your brush as this is really difficult to get out. Grab a rag or kitchen towel and wipe away any excess paint from your brush to begin with; this will make the washing process faster and easier. Thoroughly rinse the brush with water and wipe the brush in your palm to get the paint out. You can use soap to speed this process and condition your brushes.
OIL BRUSHES Start with wiping your brushes on a rag or paper towel. You should then wash them thoroughly with either soap or mineral spirits. You can buy odourless mineral spirits nowadays too. To clean them thoroughly you can use a dish soap (in England we call it fairy liquid), or overseas you may have Murphys Oil Soap or Dawn. A good tip is not to load the brush right down to the ferrule. You must make sure you clean the whole brush; not doing so will cause it to splay outwards. Oil cleans oil, so safflower & linseed oils works too. Be sure to reshape the brush once you’ve cleaned it through and a great tip by Richard Schmid is to fold card over your flats and filberts and clip a peg on them to hold them in shape. Truthfully there’s a million and one ways. Everyone has their own way of doing things but I’ve written more specifically about Oil brush cleaning on our blog. CONCLUSION No matter what works for you, ensure that you reshape your brushes to the way they first looked when you bought them, before you let them dry. If you have round brushes with caps on them, we recommend to throw those away. The protective cap we use is for transport purposes only and unless you have brilliant eyesight and a steady hand, you’ll bend back the hairs each and every time you try to get the cap back on. Always leave your brushes somewhere they can dry completely (do not store them in an air-tight container before they are dry). Invest in a wrap or brush case to carry your brushes. We sell Brush Holders for a few pounds to
store your brushes upright in your studio. They are easy to assemble and inexpensive (Search BH50 on our website). Alternatively, we sell beautiful bamboo brush rolls and handmade leather brush wraps (made inhouse) for carrying your brushes. Both of these allow your brushes to dry naturally and ensure no mould. The colour of the hairs or fibres will change over time - this is normal and does not affect the performance of the brush. For any synthetic brushes loosing their shape you can hold them in boiling water for 30 seconds, this should help pull them back into shape. Natural hair brushes can enjoy a treat of conditioner from time to time, soak them and leave them for 30 minutes - when you come back to them and rinse it out they should feel nice and soft again.
The best advice one can give is to ask! Ask your teacher and your art friends. If you find a way that works for you then stick with it. Just remember, your brushes are an investment and worth taking care of.
