Introduction Music and art Music and art enrich our lives. They are many times a means of communicating emotions, thoughts, desires, and stories that words alone cannot fully reach. In this collection of artwork I focus on one song for each painting. The musical piece is either given to me or it is something that I have chosen. In a sense, these paintings are a re-interpretation of a musician’s art, the person or persons whom the painting may be based upon, and/or my own reaction to the music and lyrics. The origin of this exhibition theme came to me during one of my painting sessions in January 2016. I regularly listen to one particular song over and over again while I am painting (and driving for that matter). This made me relect on ways in which the background music could inluence the art piece, but also then, the song lyrics, and other people. In the past, I selected the songs. How interesting it would be if song titles were suggested to me. A challenge I accepted! Songs, people, and narratives In the process of selecting the ballads that would eventually become a member in this exhibition, I asked certain people to provide me with a song or songs. Assuming it was a favorite of theirs, this connection between the song, the person, and this place and time become inluences in the inal outcome of the painting. Contributors of the title selections remain anonymous, as well as which songs are from me and which ones are given to me. Nevertheless, the songs convey poignant narratives that many people may relate to when listening to and viewing the paintings. I speak of narratives. An individual song may offer a glimpse into one’s life for a brief period of time or over a lifetime. Colorful on their own, but even more enchanting when the exhibition songs are woven back together into a new narrative! Maybe it is an imagined narrative; maybe there is a
degree of non-iction. I end the exhibition narrative with Head Over Heels, by Tears for Fears. By chance, a song given to me at the last minute that just seems to it perfectly to close the show. In any case, here is a story revealed by the paint on canvases, that is assisted by the brush strokes, form, and color. There are two pieces in the show that I did with my daughter, Nadia. Unlike the rest of the paintings, these works became connected to a certain song after they were completed. The song titles chosen (The Rose and The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face) were partly decided upon from the painting content and partly because I view these two songs so strongly with my daughter. She has also been a little disappointed that I wasn’t painting everything with her these days. You will not see a rose in The Rose painting, but maybe you will see and feel the love. My hike As I complete the paintings in this exhibit, it is only now that I appreciate that this preparation, this time and place, and this unintentional discovery of re-inding myself, is possibly my own Paciic Crest Trail. Author, Cheryl Strayed, captured her 1,100 mile hike of self-discovery along the Paciic Crest Trail in her memoir, Wild. A beautifully penned work where, in part, she describes how her thoughts and goals of completing her journey changed over the course of her trek. This happened to me during the exhibition preparation. My initial goals and mindset of this exhibition, from the beginning to now, have transformed to a certain extent. Even the title of the exhibit changed from the initial draft so it would better capture the content and the themes of the exhibition. My tapestry For several years I have loved Carol King’s Tapestry. It is one of my all-time favorites. This exhibition is, in a way, my tapestry that is interwoven with the threads of outside inluences. You may ind yourself connected in some way with this as well. This exhibition catalogue, then, provides an artifact of this tapestry at this time and place; a little bit about me, a little bit about what I imagined, and maybe a little bit about my contributors’ narratives. I am thrilled to share my ‘tapestry’ with you. Enjoy! -LB March 18th, 2016
1. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
Song: The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face; Musician: Roberta Flack Lyrics: The irst time ever I saw your face I thought the sun rose in your eyes And the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave To the dark and the endless skies my love To the dark and the endless skies The irst time ever I kissed your mouth I felt the earth move in my hand Like the trembling heart of a captive bird That was there at my command my love That was there at my command my love And the irst time ever I lay with you I felt your heart so close to mine And I knew our joy would ill the earth And last ‘till the end of time my love And it would last ‘till the end of time The irst time ever I saw your face Your face, your face

2. The Rose Song: The Rose; Musician: Bette Midler Lyrics: Some say love, it is a river That drowns the tender reed. Some say love, it is a razor That leaves your soul to bleed. Some say love, it is a hunger, An endless aching need. I say love, it is a lower, And you its only seed. It’s the heart afraid of breaking That never learns to dance. It’s the dream afraid of waking That never takes the chance. It’s the one who won’t be taken, Who cannot seem to give, And the soul afraid of dyin’ That never learns to live. When the night has been too lonely And the road has been too long, And you think that love is only For the lucky and the strong, Just remember in the winter Far beneath the bitter snows Lies the seed that with the sun’s love In the spring becomes the rose.

3. Worrisome Years Song: Worrisome Years; Musician: Greg Brown Lyrics: And the worrisome years, over the hill I thought it’s supposed to get easier to pay your bills I got nothing to show but a worrisome heart Can ya please tell me, when does the good part start? I done like they told me, I done like I should Ever since I started, I’s trying to make good Trying to make a good life for my family But I can’t buy any stuff the kids want from TV I think about leaving-but where would I go? How would I get there? I don’t know I took my stand here, I don’t want to roam This old town ain’t much but it’s all I know of home I look at Cheryl, she looks at me We don’t talk no more about our dreams We don’t have no fun the way we used to do Don’t be disappointed in me baby I ain’t disappointed in you And the worrisome years, over the hill I thought it’s supposed to get easier to pay your bills I got nothing to show but a worrisome heart Can ya please tell me, when does the good part start?

4. Time Forgot Song: Time Forgot; Musician: Conor Oberst Lyrics: Polished my shoes I bought a brand new hat Moved to a town that time forgot Where I don’t have to shave or be approachable No I can do just what I want I want to walk in that howling wind ‘til it scatters all my thoughts Sit alone on that riverbank ‘til I Forget that I can talk Just listen They say everyone has a choice to make To be loved or to be free I told you once I felt invisible And I’m sure by now you see What I meant is I’m not all there Until I inally leave Some loneliness is acceptable And some’s just outright mean It gets even Ivy crawls up the garden wall Builds a ladder towards the sky Can’t be climbed but whose gonna mind If I claim it can be done Illusion And the sun goes down And the stars come out In the distance that I felt I can see it for myself now Boarding a train to take my memories back Make up for time that I have lost I’ll never know if I’m delusional I just believe that I am not I’m going to work for my sanity Give it everything I got Though so far I have cheated death I know someday I’ll get caught Just living So here we go man it’s beautiful Get your trumpet get your drum Keep in time in a second line It can make you feel so young I know you say you’ll go all the way But that’s not quite far enough Someone told me that same thing Some told me that same thing Someone told me that exact same thing once

5. Seven Story Mountain Song: Seven Story Mountain; Group: Railroad Earth Lyrics: Oh lord, to see a light, but fail in strength to follow, Sometimes it’s hard to let it go. Oh lord, to fail in heart, and each day grow more hollow, Sometimes I just don’t wanna know. But the road that led me here, it’s begun to disappear. Sometimes I wonder where I am. Oh lord, to hear a voice, but let it fade and wallow, Sometimes it’s hard to let it to. Oh lord, to ind the words, but keep them in and swallow, One day the top is gonna blow. But the road that left me here, it’s begun to disappear. Sometimes I wonder who I am. Oh lord, to stumble blind, for years without knowing, Sunrise has burned my eyes again. Oh lord, to crumble quiet, watching from the silence Sunrise has burned my eyes again. It’s a seven-story mountain. It’s a long, long life we live. Got to ind a light and ill my heart again. It’s a seven-story mountain. It’s a long, long life ahead. Got to ind a voice and ill my throat again

Lyrics: Half a mile from the county fair And the rain came pourin’ down Me and Billy standin’ there With a silver half a crown Hands are full of a ishin’ rod And the tackle on our backs We just stood there gettin’ wet With our backs against the fence Oh, the water Oh, the water Oh, the water Hope it don’t rain all day And it stoned me to my soul Stoned me just like Jelly Roll And it stoned me And it stoned me to my soul Stoned me just like goin’ home And it stoned me Then the rain let up and the sun came up And we were gettin’ dry Almost let a pick-up truck nearly pass us by So we jumped right in and the driver grinned And he dropped us up the road Yeah, we looked at the swim and we jumped right in Not to mention ishing poles Oh, the water Oh, the water Oh, the water Let it run all over me
And it stoned me to my soul Stoned me just like Jelly Roll And it stoned me And it stoned me to my soul Stoned me just like goin’ home And it stoned me On the way back home we sang a song But our throats were getting dry Then we saw the man from across the road With the sunshine in his eyes Well he lived all alone in his own little home With a great big gallon jar There were bottles too, one for me and you And he said Hey! There you are Oh, the water Oh, the water Oh, the water Get it myself from the mountain stream And it stoned me to my soul Stoned me just like Jelly Roll And it stoned me And it stoned me to my soul Stoned me just like goin’ home And it stoned me And it stoned me to my soul Stoned me just like Jelly Roll And it stoned me And it stoned me to my soul Stoned me just like goin’ home And it stoned me

Rare Bird Song: Rare Bird; Musician: Eliza Gilkyson Lyrics: Rare bird, I know your loneliness Born into a crowded nest and given away Solitaire girl, your voice crying in the wilderness Where suffering brings holiness At least that’s what they say Rare bird, I wish you good company Rare bird I know your sorrow It rings a little hollow with every passing day It’s not fair girl They want a piece of all of you To form a line and follow you And every word that you say Rare bird, I wish you sanctuary With your razor wire and pitfalls My way of climbing walls And inding where the china dolls are hidden Words can be misunderstood But my intentions all were good There’s nothing here not worth forgiving I’m not the kind to hover near Or stand in line to catch your ear But I just want to get things clear between us I know how to disappear And leave by the backdoor dear Make sure that no one here has seen us Rare bird, I don’t want you to go down Here on the poor side of town There’s nothing left to say Just this prayer girl We’ll go on from here unbound Meet again on higher ground Some uncloudy day Rare bird, just a little prayer from me Rare bird

About the Artist I am a resident of Ames and have been a faculty member at Iowa State University since 2006 in the Interior Design Department. My background and expertise span several disciplines including architecture, urban and regional planning, education, interior design, and the ine arts. I ind great satisfaction in investigating the details, the connections, and the contrasts to these many faces of design. It is this balance between research and craft, between the purposeful and the intuitive, and between science and art that provides richness and meaning to my actions, thoughts, things, and language.
