Focal Points

Using art as a focal point of a room can give richness and depth to a space. It can take center stage in a living room above a mantle or welcome guests in an entryway.

For an entryway (or a lobby), this is an opportunity to make a first impression. Is it bold? Or quiet? Or playful? In any case, think carefully about this opportunity for high impact.

Scale

Scale is a crucial consideration in interior design and it can completely transform the feel of a space. Art selected that is too small can make a room feel cluttered and less polished. Large pieces can command a corner and entire wing--without saying a word.

In a small room, say a bedroom, one large, statement piece can bring new life into an otherwise, space-challenged room. This is particularly useful when the view from the window is not that appealing. Create a cocoon of art that one sees every morning and every evening.

Series or Multiples

Make an impact in a room with a series or multiple pieces of art that are presented in the same kind of frame. The artwork should also have other similarities such as color scheme or style. Unlike the large statement piece mentioned earlier, a series allows for flexibility in order arrangement and overall dimensions.

Transition Spaces

Transition spaces such as hallways, walkways and stairwells present the perfect opportunity to enliven an environment with art. The right art placement can have a dramatic effect, not only in these walkways, but also with views from other parts of a house (office, restaurant, or hotel). The sense of depth and spaciousness gives even the most mundane paths a bit of joy.
