1 "The Loreto Year of Felicity has

provided both a context and a springboard for a most joyous year." The glorious photograph of the Glade by night which forms the cover of this issue of the Mandevillian, showcases the results of the re-development of this historically significant area within our School.

With the sculptural portrait of Mary Ward centrally well positioned in our School, looking and striding outward in this area, current

students of all ages are enjoying both the tradition and progression of the Glade. Formally known as the Gully, the Glade has always been a place where students have gathered, prayed, processed, learned, read, contemplated and conversed. It continues to be a place for all of these pursuits today.

Already our students are using the space for a variety of classes, debates, performances and the like. We anticipate the flexibility this venue will offer parent and reunion gatherings. On behalf of the whole Loreto Community, I take the opportunity to thank all the donors to this project, for R is only through your generosity and support that the building works were possible. Our School facilities are continually improving, offering the best in provision and resources for our students and staff. The Glade project is yet another example of our ongoing pursuit of developing and maintaining a quality environment in every way. The Loreto Year of Felicity has provided both a context and a springboard for a most joyous year. The student leaders have embedded the Loreto virtue of felicity in all they have done, and have consequently led with optimism and cheerfulness. School spirit is strong, and we take pride in the ever growing awareness of our tradition, the strength of our networks, and the difference Loreto women are making. It has been a happy year! Elizabeth Burns

After twelve years of dedicated service to the School, Ms Elizabeth Burns BSc BEd (Univ Tas) MEd

(Monash) has resigned from her position as Deputy Principal Director of Studies, Preparatory to Year 12. Ms Elizabeth Burns came to Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak with strong credentials in Catholic and Independent Girls' Education. A Past Pupil of Loreto Ballarat, she has continued to lead model and embody what is essential in a Loreta education, namely, a pursuit of excellence in academia, and a true commitment to works of justice.

Alongside the undertaking of her duties as Director of Studies, over the last decade Ms Burns has also contributed her gifts and talents in the broader educational sphere. She has been a Committee member on the Victorian Association for Gifted and Talented Children, the Mathematical Association of Victoria, the

Education Committee of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute, The Ministerial Advisory Committee for Mathematics and Science, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development Mathematics Exper-t Panel and the VCAA, and held the positions of President and Vice President of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers from 2004-2009 In working outside of the education sphere, Ms Burns has also worked for public benefit as a member of the Board of Sacred Heart Mission, the Volunteer Women's House, the Ethics Committee of The Alfred, and the Halls Meals Committee. Ms Burns has travelled

extensively to work overseas in Loreto Schools and missions, most recently in Vietnam and India, and early next year plans to continue this support as a volunteer for Mary Ward International (MWI) travelling to Africa. Ms Burns leaves her position in the full knowledge that through her work and influence, many young Loreto women have been challenged to think deeply, work hard, and act with integrity and common sense. A leading teacher and practitioner, Ms Burns writing has been regularly sought by the newspapers for the annual VCE columns and advice for students. As Patron of Rowing and Aquatics, Ms Burris has advocated for involvement in these and all sports, and her personal example to her students of becoming engaged in a range of activities is a defining characteristic. We wish Ms Elizabeth Burns well as she commences the next phase of her professional and personal life. Vale!

Tom addressed our Year 11 and 12 student leaders, as well as invited guests from Xavier College, St Kevinb College, Genazzano and Sacre Coeur on what it means to be an

effective leader. Based on thoughts from his book 'Standling Tall", Tom gave the students excellent advice about finding their own strengths, working as a team and striving to be

true to their best selves. Tom engaged his audience with amusing and relevant football anecdotes but also through the wisdom of his leadership experience, both on and off the field. The Leadership Lecture was a successful event for all involved and we thank Tom Harley sincerely for the generous sharing of his time.

Mandeville Crescent Gates

You may have noticed that over the Christmas/New Year break, the main gates to the school off Mandeville Crescent have been repainted.

The original entrance to Mandeville Hall was from Orrong Road at the intersection of Mandeville Crescent, On the north east corner (on the site of the current two storey 1930s unRs) was a small gatehouse, which was demolished soon after the final subdivision of the estate

The ELC children look forward to the buddy visits with great anticipation and both rooms are alive with busy excited and happy chatter.

This week during Year 6 Maths, we have been creating factor trees. We have been working extremely hard to present them in a new creative way We are making interactive games to teach a younger class in the school. However we could

also make a factor tree game for the upper classes as well. We will be explaining to our colleagues what a factor is and how a factor tree works.

We have all created different interactive games that the girls will play so that even the Preps will begin

to understand what factors are, As well as learning much ourselves we will also be helping others to learn about factors. The factors of 20 are 1, 2,4,5,10,20! Year 6 students

Year 10 Food Design Challenge 2011

The sixty Year 10 students of Food, People and Technology at Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak entered the 2011 Victorian Food Design Challenge competition as part of their major assessment for Semester 1 .

This competition required students to: • Design a sweet or savoury risotto that met the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating • Document their recipe according the Cookey the Australian Way style, • Prepare a Food Order for all the ingredients and specialist equipment required, • Produce their risotto at school in a limitED amount of time,

• Plate, present and photograph their risotto, • Evaluate their time management, food preparation techniques and the quality of the final product according to a sensory analysis. There were an enormous number of entries of a very high standard, from students at some of our neighbouring schools, as well as many right across the state. I am delighted to announce that the winner of the First Prize in the 2011 Food Design Challenge was won by an entry from Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak. The First Prjze

winning entry was from Emily Garth and Jessica Xi. We congratulate both girls for an excellent Food Design. We commend all of the Loreto MasterChefs for their

creativity and the high quality of their entries. Photographs of all the entries from Loreto students can be seen in a slide show on the Portal in the Food,

improve further their language skills and cultural awareness. 4

The students were accompanied by teachers, Ms Mary O'Connor, Mrs Fadia Zogheib and Ms Rouba Ojaimi, The tour took place in the September/October term holidays. In Paris the students participated in morning languages classes at FIAP Paris and enjoyed every afternoon

42 rich places such as the Palais des Papes in Avignon, the

sightseeing and visiting many famous French landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame, Montmartre

(Sacrd Coeur) to name few. On one lovely sunny day, the students went on a boat ride on the river la Seine in the

famous Bateau Mouche. Over the weekend, they boarded

the TGV from the Gare de Lyon and headed to Provence for

three days, where they visited very interesting and historically

famous bridge of Avignon and the " Beaux de Provence".

Students also had the opportunity to visit Arles and its very

famous amphitheatre. The students enjoyed every moment .

Undonesia Visit to our BRIDGE partner school in Indonesia

During the last week of Term 3 Ms Elizabeth Burns and Mr Matthew Eddy spent five days

visiting our BRIDGE partner school SMPN 2 Pattal assang (which translates to Junior High School number 2 in the district of Pattallassang) near Makassar in South Sulawesi.

About two years ago Loreto Mandeville Hall successfully applied be a part of the BRIDGE Program and be paired up with an Indonesian school. The program was designed by

the Asia Education Foundation (AER to allow Australian and Indonesian students to communicate with and learn about each other, particularly at a time when travel warnings

make it difficult for in-person contact, despite the growing importance of Australia's relationship with Indonesia. (Incidentally, Loreto Mandeville Hall has also been accepted in the AEF's Chinese BRIDGE Program). The idea is to have contact via the internet, through email, wikis and other online tools, but in our case the relationship is made more challenging because of the isolation of Pattallassang, a rural area outside the provincial capital of Makassar. At the school there are very few computers and no internet access. So. what can we do?

To work that out was the aim of our visit, which was funded by the Myer Foundation through the AER So far, we have sent materials such as bilingual posters and this is something that is useful

and very much sought after by the teachers at Pattallassang, so we will continue to do this. We are also experimenting with the use of smart phones at their end, as these are becoming more common and are certainly more reliable than the traditional computer and internet set

up. It is still our hope that students at our two schools will be able to achieve real-time contact with each other in the not too distant future.

Programs such as this and the IndoAustay program, in which Indonesian students attended our school for six weeks earlier this year, give our students the opportunity to develop personal relationships with students from Indonesia, an incredibly enriching experience, and we will continue to seek out such opportunities for further contact. 6-port 3-lightights Athletics

The GSV Championship Athletics Carnival held on Wednesday 31 August at Olympic Park produced some magnificent individual and relay performances, resulting in Loreto Toorak winning the overall Division 2 carnival cup. It was an exciting night which saw Loreto Toorak finish in 1 st place in both the Junior and Intermediate Divisions and place 7th

in the Senior Division. Congratulations to the entire team. As a result of their outstanding performances, 27 girls were invited to compete at GSV Finals Night. In total, Loreto Toorak won eighteen medals at this elite event, evidence of the depth and calibre of our athletes in 2011.

On Wednesday 24 August, five Loreto Toorak students participated h the Athletics Victoria Schools Knockout competition at Olympic Park. These five students competed as a team to fill eleven individual events and one relay. It was a great opportunity for the girls involved to compete against students in their age group from a range of schools across Vctoria. All girls performed exceptionally in their individual events and the day was concluded on a high with a win in the 4 x 200m relay. Out of 17 schools iii their age group, Loreto Toorak finished in 3rd place

winning a bronze medal. Congratulations to the students involved: Holly Cannizzo, Charlotte McKenzie, Amanda Pang, Aisling Smith and Sophia Fighera,

Girls Sport Victoria Championship Cross Country

On Friday 3 June, thirty-eight students from Years 7-12 and twenty Year 6 students competed for Loreto at the GSV Championship

Cross Country carnival in Bundoora. Loreto placed 5th overall out of the 24 GSV schools, a terrific effort! Maggie Catalano (Year 6), Emilie Guy (Year 8), Chadotte McKenzie (Year 8), Laura Stacey (Year 10) and Miranda Stuart (Year 11) produced outstanding individual performances finishing in the top ten competitors for their respective divisions. We are extremely proud of the entire team who have trained hard all season.

Snow Sports

Loreto Toorak Snow Sports team recently competed at the Victorian Interschool s Championships. Following on from this, six students

qualified for the Nationals, held at Falls Creek from 7-11 Septernber including Matilda Parolini, Isabel Hennessy, Breana Cilia, Jamie-Lee Davison, Natasha Cohen, Georgia Honan, Tess Nossal and Amy Van Dongen.

A fantastic performance by the Loreto Toorak DMsion 1 Skier Cross team of Matilda Parolini and Isabel Herlnessy resulted in the team winning the bronze medal. Individually Matilda was placed 5th and Isabel 6th. Georgia Honan of Year 8 was also outstanding in an extremely strong field, finishing 1 Oth in the Division 3 Alpine Grand Slalom, 11 th in the Moguls and 14th in the Skier Cross. There were also

many personal bests from other members of the team and it is great to see a number of students from Years 1 -6 becoming involved with this sport. Congratulations to all students who have been part of the Snow Sports team for 2011 !

Congratulations to Mrs Annette Allan (coach) and the Senior B Volleyball team who qualified for the finals after a very successful season. They won their semi-final match against Huyton 3-0, but unfortunately were beaten by Star of the Sea in the grand final.

explorer. We researched him/

her and made a biography, a poster a flag and a PowerPoint presentation. At the end, we showed all our efforts by dressing up as our explorers and presenting our learning at a special event we called the 'Morning of the Memorables.'

Economics abroad!

The 50th Annual Financial Literacy and Economic Education Conference is the largest annual gathering of educators in the

United States of America, bringing together primary and secondary teachers, college and university professors, and advocates in the field of economics and financial education. I had the good fortune

to attend this conference in Washington D.C. in 1998. So, while on

Long Service Leave this year, I will again take time to enjoy learning from, and sharing ideas with, other economics educators. This year's conference will be in Chicago, Illinois.

The conference features and highlights the latest in curriculum development, instructional materials, teaching strategies, new programs and best practices, There will be professional

development workshops and sessions for teachers, and keynote speakers on current economic and financial topics.

I am looking forward to attending and sharing some of my ideas about Economics. My presentation wHI be about Engaging Girls in Economics, in order to promote the importance of Economics as a discipline. Many more males than females study Economics in the VCE so I am always keen to promote this great subject to girls! My sirlcere thanks go to our Years 9 and 10 Commerce students and Years 11 and 12 Economics students for their input into my presentation.

A highlight of Book Week- Sally Rippin our visiting author shared her remarkable story. She revealed the four

treasures used in Chinese painting and helped us to draw a monkey. Sally answered lots of our questions, including the winners of the best question competition. These students

received a highly coveted autographed Sally Rippin book.

The Julia Flynn Memorial award is given to the work that best reflects the spirit of Catholic Education Week and a deeper meaning and value of life.

The judge believed that Celia Mallard's photo media work

Portrait of a Girl was very successful in its multiple physical and conceptual layers. As a portrait the judge stated that 'it is interesting how Celia has gone beyond a physical likeness to construct an image of objects that symbolically allude to different factors that contribute to identity. Visually the work is

also interesting because the physical identity of the girl is more or less apparent according to how closely you look and where you stand. The work might also be seen as representative of not just an individual but perhaps of the female gender in general, and even as a commentary on how young girls have been, and to an extent still are, socialised in a particular way,

Ramingining Late in Term 2, Ms Mary O'Connor, Deputy Principal - Director of Pastoral Care and Ms Rhiannon McGee, Year 9 Coordinator flew

to Darwin and then on to the remote indigenous community of Ramingining in East Arnhem Land at the invitation of the community, For several years, St Kevin's College Toorak students have been visiting this community and the main purpose of our visit this year was to forge links so that a parallel experience for the Ramingining girls could occur. The women of the community made us very welcome,

taking us out to do "women's business": catching mud Grabs, collecting pandanus leaves for basket weaving and making damper. Students who had good school attendance were invited to attend a weekend camp to Sandy Point with the local teachers and St Kevin's visitors, as well as us. At this overnight stay we had a magnificent meal of local barramundi and mud crab while we watched the sunset with

a didgeridoo being played in turns by the younger boys. Having visited the community, we feel we have better understanding of the isolation ot this community and it will help when the return visit to Toorak occurs

After the visit by Ms Mary O'Connor and Ms Rhiannon McGee to Ramingining School in Arnhem Land in June this year, we were privileged to be able to host a return visit of students and staff to Loreto. In mid October four girls from Hamingining School spent a week in Melbourne, hosted by Isabella Cullinan and Emily Hand (Year 9) and their families. The girls, Phyllis Durrurrnga, Florence Malibirr, Antonia Lilipiyana and Angelina Dhamarrandji, took part in a range of classes and several excursions ill order to experience

a broad range of educational activities and inspire them with possibilities for the future. The students were accompanied by two school staff, Garah Cattermole and Veronica Gaykarnangu and Jacinta Chartres from The Smith Family who helped organise the visit. Students at Loreto Mandeville Hall took part in the inaugural Study Tour cf

China for ten days in April this year. Eighteen students from Years 9 to 11

were accompanied by Ms Elizabeth Burns and Mr Sandy McLeod. They .,

visited Beijing first, enjoying the history of the imposing Forbidden City, including an exhausting climb on the Jiayuguan section o' the Great Wall.

The Summer Palace impressed the girls while the students themselves became a tourist attraction in their own right, with many local tourists posing for photographs with them. During a pedicab tour of the maze of ancient laneways called "hutongs", a local invited us into his home and gave us a brief talk about the history of the house, now worth an absolute fortune.

Other highlights of Beijing included the Temple of Heaven and the Beijing Acrobatic Show with its amazing display of human agility The girls

particularly enjoyed the chance to bargain wjth local vendors at a market where their naggling skills came to the fore. Food throughout the tour was good, but the Peking Duck banquet was a favourite of many. i

After Beijing, we visited Xi'an, a former capital of China and home to

the Terracotta Warriors. The scale of the works there was immense and

students paused to reflect on the fact that these figures were over 2000 years old. In Xi'an, we also had the chance to visit a foreign language high school, one of few schools in the country that offered more

languages than the usual English and Chinese. The students there were very friendly and we made fast friends.

Shanghai was a chance to see modern China in full flight. We enjoyed the view of the Bund, and the bustling market of Old Shangnal. The girls took advaniage of some more opportunities to bargain and buy gifts for friends and relatives here, and later at another market near the centre of

the city.

The day trip to Suzhou provided a chance to experience a traditional Chinese style garden and appreciate the water features inside. We also

came to understand why Suzhou is referred to as the "Venice of China", taking a cruise along one of the major waterways. We finished our day trip with a visit to a silk factory.

Our trip to China was a memorable one and has inspired many of the students to return again. The real-life expenence of being in the country

is something that words cannot do justice to. Why don't you go and see it for yourself?

It is hard to sum up the essence of a Loreto Educatjon but I think we

witnessed a truly Loreto experience at our 50 Year Reunion on 2 April 2011.

After lunch as we sat at our tables in the beautiful parlour of Mandeville Hall,

"One element of a good life: a sarisfying career." - Special Presenter, Dr Pamela Hanrahan (1982) Regional Commissioner, Queensland - ASIC We were delighted to welcome over 30 Past Pupils to our Past Pupils' Legal Profession Cocktail Evening. The attendees represented various sectors of the legal profession, including first year law students members of the Bar and the judiciary legal practitioners practising in both private practice and in corporate in-house legal functions, and law graduates who are now leveraging their legal skills in other industries. Our guest speaker, Dr Pamela Hanrahan, gave a truly

inspiring speech. She provided very sound and practical advice, encouraging attendees to maintain good physical, mental and financial health, and also to be mindful of the importance of resilience in the

face of both personal and career setbacks. She also noted the impact of serendipity on career paths, and counselled the audience to accept

that sometimes we can be lucky enough to have everything fall into place! The evening provided a wonderful opportunity for attendees to

network, socialise and share experiences regarding their legal careers. We have now established an invitation-only group of Loreto Toorak Legal Professionals via Linkedln. In order to answer to these questions I studied the literature in the fields of philosophy,
