Fishy Business Year 2 invited other classes to view our class

exhibition and museum entitled 'Aquarium and Ocean Museum'. During the term, the children have undertaken extensive studies in seas,

oceans and aquatic creatures together with the collection and study of shells (conchology). The children displayed their shell collections which included many varieties from around the world.

The Year 2 aquarium was thriving with the announcement of the recent birth of six guppies

The girls also studied aspects of Technology, with the children designing and constructing 'humane' animal traps for the purpose of studying or treating sick, or injured land/sea creatures. The Museum exhibition was opened daily and many visitors experienced the interesting aspects of what the sea had to offer.

introduced to Ludwig Beinelans' picture story books about Madeline. For those who are not

familiar with the books, they are about a French schoolgirl who, although very tiny, is very brave.

The xii·ls were so enthusiastic about the stories that the French topic was extended across the curriculum. In Library, not only did the children read Madeline

stories, they also turned the

Madeline's dog).

Not every young Australian has the opportunity to represent his or her country in a foreign land. However, my sister Jacinta and I had the unforgettable experience of visiting the United States of America for three weeks in

January this year as 'ambassadors' for Australia.

Partially funded by the Australia Council for the Arts and the Melbourne-Boston Sister City Committee, and supported by numerous dignitaries including our Premier, Mr Jeff Kennett and Chief Commissioner of the City of Melbourne, Mr Kevaii Gospel· AO, the Chamber Strings of Melbourne Orchestra had plenty of Australian support and enthusiasm. We hoped these feelings would be reciprocated in the U.S.A.

Sight-seeing, including a cruise along the Mississippi where. we saw the 'Mandeville Street

Wharf'(a pity it wasn't a 'Crescent') and shopping were priorities here, and rehearsals were grand (quite lit:erally-the room allocated to our little orchestra was the old-fashioned grand ballroom in our gorgeous hotel ). Our two performances were well attended and warmly received.

Adventure Camp For the past four years our Year 8 studeiits have embarked on an Adventure Camp early in the school year to Camp Rumbug, set iii the picturesque cool, temperate rainforest region just north of Wilson's Promontory in South Gippsland. The aims of the camp are to foster teamwork and initiative among the girls within a safe, stimulating bush environment. The camps have been a resounding success and are

keenly anticipated by the girls as an exciting way to start the acadeinic year.

Junior School Swimming During the first week of term, 87 girls from Years 3 to 6 arrived at the Prahran Pool to try out for the Junior School Swimming Team. It

was certainly a challenge to time all of the girls over 50 metres in all of the competitive strokes.

With the help of Miss Blackie, Miss Sim and a

number of parents, the trials were completed in two sessions and the hard work of preparing for the Armadale District Sports began.

The girls trained twice a week after school, sometimes in brilliant sunshine, other days in

the cold and wet. The thought of something to eat from the canteen at the end of each session

kept the smiles on their faces during these cold afternoons. The sports were to be held on March

in second place behind the amazing St. Catherine's team but well clear of Lauriston,

The fastest swims in each age group ensured qualification at the South Central Zone Championships. Alexandra Dickeson ( 11 years

Breaststroke) and Joanna Downing ( 11 years Butterfly and Freestyle) not only qualified for the Zones but qualified to swim at the Victorian Priniary

Schools State Swimming Championships. Alexandra finished seventh in

her breaststroke heat with a personal best swim.

Tradition has it that a noisy crowd was heard approaching as the nuns prayed and commended themselves to the protection of the Holy Angels.

Mother Frances Bedingfield placed a picture of St Michael over the front door. Just as those

inside were expecting the crowd to force its way inside, it suddenly became quiet and the crowd withdrew. Later those watching from an inn

opposite told of' a mysterious figure appearing over the convent. This inspired such fear in the demonstrators that they retreated in silence. In

thanksgiving for their deliveranee, Mother Frances promised perpetual devotions in honour of St Michael. This promise has been honoured

Sister Margarita (Louisa) Farley IBVM Louisa Farley was born on 13 December 1909 at Heathcote, Victoria, the daughter ofMarie Jeanne Jose and Thomas James Farley. She was one of eight children. Louisa attended local schools in Heathcote before being sent as a boarder to Loreto Mandeville Hall, in 1925, the first full year of Loreto Mandeville Hall's school life. The total

enrolment of the school at this time was 74 girls.

After school days, Louisa helped at home on the property until 1933, when on 2nd February, she entered the novitiate of the Loreto Sisters at

Ballarat, and became Sister Margarita IBVM. Sister Margarita studied at the Melbourne University Teachers' College from 1935 until the end of 1937, during which time she gained both a Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate and a Trained Infhnt/Kindergarten Teachers' Certificate.

She taught at Loreto Junior School. Toorak from 1953 to 1960 and again from 1975 until 1983.

Sister Margarita lived her many years of teaching with characteristic integrity, with her chosen motto 'Deus Solus', 'God Alone' to support and sustain her, as she responded bravely to the exacting demands upon her... moving from one state to another, making new beginnings and new contacts, bending mind and will to each experience.

She was as open as anyone could be to all things that make lif22 beautiful. She was immensely proud of her family, sharing with them the tragedies, the joys and sorrows that are the lot of every

human family. She loved the children she taught, and those she prepared for First Holy Communion, her many friends and Past Pupils, and all those to

whom she brought the Faith, and she responded with joy to Nature, and to the trees and flowers that had surrounded her in childhood. In a word, Margarita found God in all things.

Past Pupil Profile Ann Quinn QED! No doubt many readers are familiar with the Latin "Quod Erat Demonstrandum of schooldays, or as students prefer to say, "Quite Easily Done." Ann Quinn has cleverly incorporated her own name in taking the play on words even further. Her business name QED stands for Quinessential Difference.

Ann, the epitome of organisation, gives the impression however, that her work is quite easily done. As a sports science consultant, Ann has to juggle her commitments to the athletes she trains in Australia, lecture tours to the

USA and Asia, as well as her major involvement as Pat Cash's personal trainer for the past 10 years.

Ann expected her association with Pat to last only a couple of weeks when, in 1986, she was asked to help in his recovery from a back problem. However, she now spends about six months every year travelling the tennis circuit with Cash and his coach Ian Barclay. "I have

been with them through the highs and the lows",

When asked how shejuggles keeping tabs on her athletes at home and study with her travelling commitments, Ann laughs,"I guess I have always been an organised person. I remember I had one of the first portable computers which people used to stare at in airports. I actually find it relaxing to do my reading:ind study while on tour." Ann expresses her approval for the introduction of laptop computers for students at Loretto. as she thinks they are becoming an essential tool for any career. Ann also applauds the wide range of studies offered to girls, especially languages, as they open the door to so many opportunities.

Ann is busy editing a book on VCE Physical Education and has. herself, written The Science

0/ Coaching Tennis". She is keenly interested in education and spent a short tiine teaching Phys Ed at Loreto and assisted with Indonesian in the Senior School. She is a member of the

Committee for Olympic funding for athletes.

Despite tempting overseas offers. Ann intends to remain iii Australia where she thinks the

quality of life is so much better.

year". She was able to help cricketer, Simon O'Donnell recover after his treatment for cancer.

"Working with Simon through his cancer and

chemotherapy treatment and seeing him return to health was a wonderfully rewarding experience," recalls Ann. Ann is fortunate to have the use of' her parents' pool and rebound ace tennis court. She has recently purchased the property next door, which will mean less travelling and her parents will

keep an eye on the place when she is overseas.

Already holding a Bachelor of Applied Science, Masters Degree in Exercise Science, and Diploma of Nutrition, Ann is currently

completing her PhD in Psychology at Melbourne University. "Although I was athletics Captain at school and always hoped to work in the area of sport, I certainly did not plan to do a PhD iii Psychology when I left Mandeville Hall in 1977",

says Ann. High on her agenda for next year are proposed tours to the U.S.A and Asia, lecturing on the

psychological aspects of rehabilitation.

"Psychology," Ann claims, "is becoming more widely valued by doctors and physiotherapists for its role in recovery and most of my lectures are to the medical fraternity".

The response to our Annual Giving programme has been exciting, with over 90 donations

Brochures and letters of invitation were posted to most of our Past Pupils for whom we have a

current address. Some school suppliers and past staff were also sent an invitation and brochure.

Participants were asked to donate to their choice of the Building Fund, the Library Fund (both these are tax deductible), the Historic House

Fund and the Scholarship Fund that supports the education ofgirls at Loreto Mandeville Hall.

The school is immensely grateful to these generous supporters of the school who responded

so quickly. School fees and government grants meet the school's recurrent costs, but not the major capital needs of new buildings and major refurbishment which do so much to enhance the

school's educational programmes. Every gift, no matter how large or small is truly valued, for, as we said in the brochure, participation is the key to the success of Annual Giving.

The Past Pupils' Association ran an Art Exhibition and Sale for the first time this year

with support from the school. More of this thoroughly enjoyable and delightful event in the report from Mrs Sue Olney, the President of Past Pupils. However, we would like to thank

the professional artists and all those who worked so hard to make the whole weekend the wonderful success that it was.
