Welcome Back Welcome to the first edition of the 2013 Media Council’s Newsletter. I hope your Easter holidays were great and we look forward to showcasing our favourite events throughout the year in the following three editions. We encourage the Loreto community to embrace the camera and indulge in the memories we will be capturing in 2013. Enjoy!

Big Sister Little Sister Orientation Orientation for Year 8s was daunting for both cohorts as they readied themselves to meet their new Loreto sister for the first time. After introductions, the girls got into groups with their little sisters to take part in a trivia activity organised by the Spirit Council. When the trivia was over, the girls, with newly formed friendships, left for a school provided morning tea in the Undercroft. The seniors briefed their little sisters on what Loreto life was like and what to expect in years to come. Some girls gave a tour of the school and showed each Year 8 where their various classes would be held to make their first day of classes easier to navigate. All in all, the orientation proved to be very enjoyable.

Year 12 Retreat Retreats are a time to reflect, bond and relax and the Year 12s did just that on our very last Retreat. As our Loreto journey is coming to an end, many girls took this last Retreat as an opportunity to finally speak freely and openly to fellow peers and their words were appreciated. After being fed exceptionally well and having the chance to relax, all the girls came back closer and better than ever.

P & F Student Dance On Friday 15 March, girls from Years 8 – 12 dressed in “all things American” for the annual P & F Student Dance. A vast variety of costumes turned up, with lots of girls showcasing the traditional blue, red and white stripes, to show off their American pride. Boys from Villanova College, St Laurence’s College, Marist College Ashgrove, Churchie, Iona College and St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace attended, however, were not as creatively dressed as our Loreto girls! It was a very successful and enjoyable night for all, including those who volunteered and supervised (thank you)!

Swimming Carnival School spirit and some friendly competition is always a fun way to kick start the year. The Year 12s looked great in their costumes and the other year levels were so enthusiastic and helpful. The day was a total success. Congratulations to Mulhall for taking 1st place!

Music Camp The annual Loreto/Villanova Music Camp was an exciting way to begin the new school year for both the music students and all of the teachers and parents involved. The camp was held at Mapleton on the first weekend of February and was a great way to kick start Music for the year. Featuring a “Music of the Americans” theme, activities and music included a games workshop, sectional music intensive workshops with guest tutors, swimming and diving during free time in the afternoon, trivia game nights and rehearsing for the finale concert which took place back at Villanova’s Hanrahan Theatre on the Sunday afternoon. A great time was had by all. Once again, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to all staff and parents who organised the camp and gave up their weekend to enable the camp to take place.

Cross Country Not even the rain could stop our school spirit and determination at this year’s Cross Country. With the teachers in place doing everything they could to keep themselves entertained and the girls doing anything to cross the finish line, the day went by quickly. Congratulations to Barry for taking out 1st place!

Mary Ward Connect 2013 proved to be another great year for Mary Ward Connect! Twelve lucky Year 10 girls departed Brisbane for a once in a life time experience. Six girls, accompanied by Ms Beach, headed to Loreto Marryatville while the other six, accompanied by Mrs Van den Brink, headed to Loreto Ballarat. All the while, 12 equally excited and nervous girls from these Loreto schools made their way to us! The girls were treated to a great welcome as they arrived at their destinations. Each group then spent the next three days doing lots of different activities and learning about life at another Loreto school. All the girls have created great friendships with their host sisters, and enjoyed Mary Ward Connect, saying, "It's an experience no one will forget."

Year 11 Semi-Formal The Year 11 Semi-Formal was an overall great night. Every girl looked absolutely stunning (as per usual) and their partners scrubbed up alright too! The beats were funky fresh thanks to the super hip DJ and all of the girls, their partners and horrifyingly, even the teachers got up for a good ol’ boogie. Even though Instagram failed due to the thousands of photos uploaded that night, and most girls wore heals six inches too high which left them aching for the sake of style, a brilliant time was had by all.
