CONGRATULATIONS TO: Kathryn Roberts (Class of 2010) who has been awarded a Merit Certificate for the 2011 TJ Ryan Memorial Medal in recognition of academic achievements and leadership qualities demonstrated in Year 12. Erin Toohey (Year 11) on her recent success at the Queensland Diving Championships where she won a gold and silver medal. Erin will now be competing at the Australian Titles in Sydney over the Easter holidays. After that, she will also travel to France and Germany for some international diving experience. We wish her every success.

No student should ever leave the school grounds without permission after she has arrived at school for the day until afternoon dismissal. If a student has to leave the school before 3.20pm for an appointment, she should bring a note beforehand requesting permission and obtain a signed pink slip from her homeroom teacher which is to be presented at the office when she checks out. Students in Year 12 must have their pink slips signed by the Year 12 Co‐ordinator. On Wednesday, because of the need to confirm arrangements for E.P., Year 11 students must have their pink slips signed by the E.P. Co‐ordinator. If a student does not have a note, or needs to leave the grounds before morning homeroom, she must obtain permission from the Deputy Principal – Pastoral Care or, in her absence, another Deputy. Students and parents are asked to keep appointments during school time to a minimum. Notes of explanation to the homeroom teacher are required for absences, in advance if appropriate, otherwise on the day the student returns to school. Absentee notes should be dated and presented in an envelope. Parents should contact the school by telephone early in the day if a student is absent. Special requests for absence during Term time must be made in writing to the Principal. Such requests should be for serious reasons and should endeavour to avoid test blocks. Interhouse and Interschool Swimming and Athletics Carnivals are normal school days and all students in the designated Year groups are expected to attend. Absence from school to complete assignments is totally unacceptable. Students should plan their work to enable it to be presented on the due date without undue stress. In anticipation, I thank you for your support, as adherence to these procedures and protocols is essential for us in upholding our duty of care to your daughter. Year 11 Ancient History Field Trips
Year 11 and 12 Exams
During the term the Year 11 Ancient History students have participated in two ‘hands on’ archaeology experiences as part of their study of Archaeology. These field trips have formed the basis of two pieces of assessment for the term – a report and their mid semester exam. In the first instance the girls visited St Helena Island and spent a very hot and tiring day working as an archaeologist in the sun to locate and string line the outlines of two key buildings from the penal settlement era – the prison and the Chief Warder’s house. Working from old photographs, original building plans and archaeological remains, the girls discovered that ‘through the process of archaeology, history stares us in the face’. They discovered that class and race determined the lives of people on the island and that societal attitudes to punishment as well as race and class were quite harsh for the prisoners. The second field trip took the girls to the Abbey Museum at Caboolture where they again worked as archaeologists, this time on a ‘dig’, using the Wheeler ‐ Kenyon method and stratigraphy to uncover ‘Egyptian’ remains in their pit. They were delighted to uncover a complete sarcophagus and associated buried ‘treasure’! The girls agreed that archaeology is not the glamorous world of Lara Croft or Indiana Jones! Last week saw the departure of our guests from Kanagawa Gakuen, Yokohama. From all accounts, the girls very much enjoyed their stay in Brisbane and developed friendships which will continue long into the future. Many thanks to the families who hosted Japanese students as it is due to your generosity that the program is able to continue. A special thank you to Yuri Hada‐Baxter whose dedication and commitment ensures the ongoing success of our Japanese exchange programs. In addition, Japanese Day was celebrated at Loreto last Tuesday which gave everyone the opportunity to enjoy sushi, Japanese dancing and a chopstick competition. Thank you to Agata Pokora and the Multicultural Council for their excellent organisation of these festivities.

French The profiles completed by Year 9 and 10 French students have been sent to our sister school in Bordeaux to be “matched” with a French student. Having a French penfriend will add an exciting new dimension to language learning in the Junior school. On another note, as you may be aware, there is a French Film Festival in Brisbane at the moment. The author line‐up at this year’s Celebration of Literature included Andy Griffiths, Randa Abdel Fattah, Rebecca James, Cath Crowley and Richard Newsome. Our girls were amazed that one of the authors, Steph Bowe was herself in Year 12… with two books published. Two authors, Fiona Wood and Gabrielle Williams, are past pupils of Loreto Mandeville Hall in Melbourne. Many of the authors had had previous jobs, writing for television or advertising; one had been an economist in the Bank of England. However, now they find novel writing rewarding. The authors shared life skills as well as writing tips. Fiona Wood emphasised the importance of hard work and perseverance. Kirsty Eagar exhorted the girls to be bold in life, suggesting that failure is not always a bad thing; there are rewards and lessons along the way. They warned that Facebook can be a terrible time‐waster. Fiona Wood said “Reading develops a fit, buff brain.” Steph Bowe said, “Books help you explore big ideas…they help teens to make sense of their world whilst exploring and developing their identity.” The girls learned, laughed, had books autographed and were photographed with favourite authors. The following is a snapshot of what UQ, QUT and Griffith University offer to students.
University of Queensland ‐ Students applying through QTAC to UQ will be awarded bonus points towards their entry rank on the following basis: 2 points for passing an approved language other than English (LOTE). 2 points for passing the Queensland Studies Authority Mathematics C (or equivalent as determined by UQ). 1 point for successfully completing a university level enrichment course at university concurrently with the senior program (for example, the UQ Enhanced Studies Program). The maximum bonus under this scheme for any one student is 5 points. The maximum LOTE bonus per student is 2 points and the maximum enrichment bonus is 1 point, irrespective of how many subjects have been studied. Please note: the number of bonus points that a student can receive under any entry scheme (including the UQ‐Link Access Program) is capped at five. Bonus ranks can be applied to the MBBS Provisional Entry however the UMAT score will differentiate between OP1 and Rank99 applications. Griffith University ‐ Recognises that there are some subjects and studies undertaken by high school students that require a high level of skill and knowledge and that better prepare students for the rigour and diversity of tertiary study. OP eligible students successfully completing nominated subjects or studies will automatically be granted bonus admission ranks when applying to study at Griffith University. Procedures for Block Exams – Instructions to Year 11’S Preparation prior to exams Double check with your teachers the areas that will be covered on the exam Progressive revision in the time prior to the exam is the key If in doubt about something, go and ask your teacher Imagine yourself as the test writer and try to identify areas that will be tested. Work with someone else for question and answer sessions Look after your health - eat well, get plenty of sleep and exercise regularly. Attendance You are only required at school for your scheduled block exam Rolls will be marked outside the scheduled rooms before the exam except for ET students who go to 511. Once students have arrived at school for an exam or for study or for seeing a teacher they MUST NOT LEAVE THE SCHOOL GROUNDS until their final exam for the day is over. You may not leave the school grounds to get food, coffee etc. When you leave you are to go home. Remember the reasons you are given an exam block. The time off from normal timetabled lessons is designed to be an advantage for your study – use the time wisely. If you finish early, you cannot leave the exam Uniform Perfect school uniform is required for every exam. You must wear your hat to and from school. Nail polish and jewellery rules are the same as for any other day Bags cannot be taken in for the exam – all bags will be left outside the exam room Timing Be at school in plenty of time to get organized before exam assembly time on timetable Carefully check the start time of each exam and the exam’s duration Except for extra time students, and unless otherwise indicated, assemble on the paths outside the MWC or Mulwith for morning block exams 10 minutes before the written assembly time of 8.30 in the mornings and 12.45 for afternoon sessions. You will need to line up in alphabetical order in your subject class groups to have the rolls marked Extra time students need to assemble outside the Extra Time Room 10 minutes before the scheduled times of 8.30 and 12.30. Rolls will be marked in the exam room. If you are late, you lose your extra time. Behaviour The only communication allowed in the exam room is by putting your hand up and waiting for a supervisor to come to you – do not ask to borrow anything from someone near and do not get out of your seat If you need to go to the toilet, you must put your hand up and wait for a supervisor to come to you to get permission Mobile phones must be switched OFF and left in your bags outside the exam rooms. If a mobile phone goes off in your exam, it can be taken as cheating Behaviour on the way home from exams is judged heavily by the community. Go straight home to study! During the exam Check both sides of all sheets of paper to make sure you don’t miss any questions or information During perusal, read all questions and highlight important aspects of questions Plan your answers Look at which questions are worth more Only write on the paper provided Do not doodle or deface task sheet or answer sheet in any way Check your work carefully at the end Stationery All exam paper is supplied, you must not use your own paper at any time. You need to take pens, pencils, rubber, ruler, calculator into exams but not pencil cases No other books, paper are allowed (unless for an open book exam) Illness If a student is sick make sure that the school is informed as early as possible on the day of the exam. A medical certificate is required if you miss any exam Lockers Mulwith will be out of bounds during the exam block Cannot access lockers so take all study books home before exam block – this is a good chance to clean out lockers properly Thank you and good luck for your first Senior exam block.
