Volume 2 - August 9, 2011 Dear Parents and Students A Piece of Light As the sun rose, it filled me until I thought I was all light and there was nothing left of what I once called ME. Then suddenly I saw below at the water’s edge another sister of light. My light streamed out to her. Her light flowed back to me and we were one in the light. Macrina Wiederkehr There is a piece of light in all of us . . . . seen or unseen, the light is there, ready to kindle, eager to expand, refusing to be tightly contained. As soon as the tiniest space is allowed it quickly emerges, floods outward, illuminating the darkest of places. One single candle lights a little dark space. Many candles light a world full of people desperately in need of each other’s glow. Each lone light makes us stronger when we all stand together. Joyce Rupp And so it is we pray in thanksgiving for the light we each bring and the strength we gain from each other’s light. Amen. FLOOD RELIEF I congratulate and thank the school community for their enormous efforts over many months. Because of your generosity and “light” we have been able to donate: Books and educational equipment to Milpera State High School (a flood affected school committed to educating and assisting many refugees and unaccompanied minors); $3,250.00 to the Grantham Community Flood Fund; $4,000 to the St Francis of Assisi Conference of St Vincent de Paul, West End (servicing many flood affected areas of Brisbane); and Student voluntary time to St Vincent de Paul, Sumner Park, assisting them with the sorting of volumes of donated goods. Additionally, we will be collecting hamper goods over the next few weeks for donation to St Fabian’s Conference of St Vincent de Paul, Yeronga, because sadly there are still many families in the surrounding areas greatly in need of basic daily food and household supplies. The senior leaders will co-ordinate the hamper collections via home classes. We thank you for your continued support. DADS AND DAUGHTERS: DATE CLAIMER On Friday September 2 (the Friday before Fathers’ Day) the P&F are proudly sponsoring a Father-Daughter Breakfast. The breakfast for Dads and their daughters will commence at 7.00am by the pool. ROAD SAFETY Some staff and parents have urged me to please remind all parents to be highly mindful about the importance of road safety around the College. High speeds and children simply do not mix. Please support our community in this most important way. Driving carefully and cautiously is vitally important to us all. Thank you for your support. YEAR 9 RETREAT Next Monday our beautiful Year 9 girls will be spending a day ‘in retreat’: a day of reflection and prayer. We hold them in our hearts and prayers as they seek to discover a deeper sense of self and others; “learning from and about the heart”. MUSICAL 2012 Auditions will soon commence for the Musical for Term One, 2012, a joint production between Loreto and Villanova. Like all selection processes in Sport, Music, Debating etc there is always a high level of interest and much talent to fill a finite number of places. I ask that parents and students clearly understand that in all these cases the panel of those staff delegated to choose are people who are very talented and experienced. Choice is sometimes clear and other times very difficult. In choosing for the Musical, the complex nature of the part offered for audition has to be taken into consideration. The best decision, without favour or discrimination, will be made on the day. It is based on how the student displays her talent on that day without any pre-knowledge being a factor. These careful decisions need to be matched by the willingness of girls to accept and work with the outcome. Parents are asked to understand that the nature of the process means that there will be disappointment and the process is not open to question or debate. Thank you in advance for the huge task of the Musical for 2012. CONGRATULATIONS To Murphy Allendorf on her selection in the Queensland School Sport 19 Years & Under State team for Hockey. They will be completing a tour of New Zealand in October. We wish her safe travels and every success. CONDOLENCES We pray in thanksgiving for the life of Sr Moya Mottram IBVM who passed away at Mary’s Mount in Ballarat late last week. Sr Moya previously worked at Loreto Coorparoo as enrolments secretary. She brought love and laughter. We remember all the IBVM sisters in our prayers and hearts and we most especially pray for Sr Moya’s eternal peace in God’s loving embrace. Amen.

Career News Loreto Careers Market The bi-annual Careers Market will be held on Friday 26 August from 12.30 – 1.30pm in the Mary Ward Centre. This is a fantastic opportunity for all students from Years 8 – 12 to come and see what Universities, private colleges, TAFE colleges etc have to offer students as they start to determine their career pathway. Drama Department MARY POPPINS BOOKING - Wednesday 15th February, 2012 There are still available seats for the multi-award-winning production of “Mary Poppins” Wednesday 15th February 2012 for any interested students. This offer is now extended to parents and siblings. However, there are a limited number of seats available. I have managed to secure seats in Balcony 2 – Rows A-J for students (approx. $50.50 per ticket) and there are available seats in Balcony 1 – Rows O-P which Loreto staff members are also offered at the ticket price of $60.50 per ticket. School Group Bookings are always allocated these seats – that is why the price of the tickets is considerably reduced. (The standard price of a premium ticket is approx. $127.00). A booking sheet has been placed in the Main office for any student who is interested in securing a seat to this performance. You will be informed regarding payment arrangements at a later date. Students are responsible for their own transport to and from the Lyric Theatre on Wednesday 15th February, 2012. Year 12 Drama Theatre Visit to “Cabaret” This Thursday 11th August, 2011, Year 12 Drama students will be attending an 11.00 am performance of “Cabaret” at the Cremorne Theatre at QPAC, South Brisbane. This performance aligns with the students’ current unit of study on Political Theatre and therefore attendance is compulsory. There will be no charge for this theatre visit. Students will travel to The Cremorne Theatre by bus and will return back to school via bus by 1.45pm. The students will therefore, need to bring books for Periods 1, 2, and 7.

Grease Auditions Even though the joint Loreto / Villanova production of Grease is scheduled for 7 - 10 March in 2012 , the process of auditions is just beginning. Audition sign on sheets were put up on Monday and girls presently in Years 9 to 11 are invited to nominate if they wish to audition for a vocal, acting only, dancing only or orchestral role. These sheets will be taken down on Friday 12 August and the girls who have signed up will be given information about the audition process next week. Auditions are scheduled to be held on 31 August and 1 September.

Information and Computing Technology Competitions 2011 NCSS Challenge Update Entry to the NCSS Challenge competition has now been closed. This year 14 students have enrolled to take part in the NCSS Challenge run by the University of Sydney. The challenge is online and can be done from home or at school. The University has allocated a group of young women to tutor students at Loreto College if needed. Tutoring/assistance will also be available at the school during lunch and before school in Room 210 and an occasional email with hints will be sent periodically if the need arises. Python 2.7.2 is available at http://www.python.org/getit/ . A Google search using “Python Download” can be used if you forget the URL. Before installing the software ensure it is compatible with your PC/Mac. The competition will run for the next four weeks. Language DepartmentNews French Day Last Tuesday, many of us donned our red, white and blue in celebration of French Day at Loreto. During Assembly, the Year 9 French classes did a wonderful job explaining the history of Bastille Day and how it is celebrated today. The Year 12 girls are also to be commended on their beautiful prayer readings. French patisseries, croissants and éclairs were sold at morning tea and much fun was had at lunch time during the Eiffel Tower building competition. Congratulations to the Year 8 team whose marshmallow and skewers Tower was judged the winner. Thank you to Agata Pokora, Anna Simpson and the Multicultural Council whose assistance and organisation were much appreciated. To cap off a fun-filled day, the Year 11 and 12 French classes enjoyed a beautiful three course dinner at La Provence restaurant as part of the French celebrations.

Music News Trivia Night – Thank you to the parents of the Music Support Group for running a fantastic social night on Saturday! We will have final fundraising figures soon, but with over 120 people in attendance, the night was certainly a success. Money raised from this, and other Music Support Group events, goes directly back to Loreto students in the form of the various tuition scholarships offered by the college.
Thanks to the students in Exit Stage Left, Sorelle and Chorale who represented the school with performances at the Mt Carmel Fete and the Loreto Information Day on Sunday. Guests at both events were amazed at the musical standards demonstrated. Congratulations to Concert Band also on your excellent performance at this morning’s assembly.

Concert Band One – Don’t forget that your rehearsal this week is once again extended until 5:30pm. This is our final full rehearsal before QCMF as next Thursday will be interrupted by various groups heading to the first sections of the Festival.
Music Camp – All members of Concert Band One are reminded that our last major commitment for Term Three will be a performance at the Primary Music Camp concert at 2:30 pm Sunday 28 August. We would also like to invite all members of the String Ensemble to perform at this concert. Some senior members of each group will be invited to attend earlier in the day to act as section leaders and tutors. This camp is an important service that Loreto provides to local primary schools and they are always very appreciative that our students make such an effort to help them learn music and give them the opportunity to hear advanced groups performing.
Parent Helpers – for the past 20 years, Villanova has run the Catholic Colleges Music Festival as a service to the Catholic community in Queensland. It is now a huge event that runs for four days (Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 August). This is a massive undertaking that relies on the help of a huge number of Villanova parents, students and past pupils. There is now a way we can help! Any Loreto parents or senior students who would be willing to assist by signing up for a 3 hour shift over the weekend can do so via the Villanova website (http:// www.vnc.qld.edu.au/Music/events.htm). You can choose the sort of job you would like and also the venue. Now that our performance schedule has been in the newsletter, it is easy to sign up for a shift directly before or after one of your daughter’s performances. There will always be experienced people on all shifts who can help make the job very easy – it would be great if the Loreto Community was able to support this important event in our calendar!
String Sextet – The String Sextet have been asked to provide background music at an International Women’s Mental Health Forum held at the Brisbane Convention Centre on Saturday 20 August. While this is QCMF weekend and a very busy time for all, we have agreed to this performance as it is a great honour to be asked to play at this very important event.
Parents’ information re QCMF – Attached to this newsletter is a very informative brochure QCMF have supplied for parents, explaining procedures to make sure you get the most out of your daughter’s QCMF performance. It contains information on such things as ticket prices, parking, arrival times & venue rules so that you don’t accidently miss performances. CSGSSA Athletics Loreto College will be taking up to 80 athletes to compete in the Catholic Secondary Girls School Sport competition on Monday 22nd August This year Loreto College are conducting this major event with all staff and with many students involved in tasks on the day. All students will be transported out to the QE11 Athletics track at the ANZ stadium. The students will leave school directly after assembly and return to school around 2.45pm to take the normal buses home. All students are expected to attend and assist. Full school uniform including hats should be worn. It is strongly advised that the girls bring a packed lunch for the day. If you have any further enquiries, please don’t hesitate to contact the Year Coordinators or Mrs Meg Stevens in the Sport Office. Results: Round 8 - 3 August Junior A - This week the 8A's decided to have a bit of fun for their last game; playing out of position. They lost 17-7 to Brigidine, but had the time of their lives in the process. The whole team - Lauren Gleed, Lauren Hocking, Siobhan Setch, Georgia Garrett, Olivia Pratt, Mikaela Crone, Mason Ballantyne, Georgia Johnson, Kassidy Graham and Marenda Mcphee, gave it their all, showing off their improved skills in their usual positions and having a go at the opposite position. The girls were also very vocal in their encouragement and support of each other and due an injured Lauren Hocking did some great coaching while I was umpiring. I am very proud of all the girls’ efforts and support. Coach - Magdaleine Ryan Junior B – Despite losing this game to Our Lady’s, each and every girl played an exceptional game this week. They should all be very proud of themselves, finishing as overall runners-up in this year’s competition. The grand-final was a tough game against a team that was physically a lot bigger and more experienced. The girls have had a wonderful season and I congratulate them all for their commitment and enthusiasm! Coach - Amy Logan Junior C- Defeated All Hallows’ School 26 – 10. A well deserved third place for this exciting team! Well done! Despite the opposition being short of players and our team not having the full cohort either, we played with great intensity and had our highest scoring quarter of the season with 11 goals. Isabella Scott's goal keeping seemed to improve in leaps and bounds during this game, with the highlight a huge blocked shot in the second quarter! Grace Capelli and Emily Thomas are to be commended on their unselfish play during this game and all of the girls are to be congratulated on a great season! Coach - Mrs Jacqui Gold Intermediate A - The Intermediate A team finished the season with our most nail biting game to date. After losing the first quarter by two points, we were one point in front at half time, and tied at the end of the third quarter, making our final winning score of 18-24 against St Rita’s all the more impressive. With only six of our players available, thanks must go to Georgia Burns from the B team for helping us out and all our girls must be congratulated on keeping up the intensity while playing the full four quarters. A very special mention must go to Emily McMahon, who, after an impressive head knock ten minutes from the end of the game, managed to keep playing in an amazing display of sportsmanship, without which we would not have won. Congratulations again to every one of our team members, and to our Captain Annie Passingham. Your hard work and determination allowed you to secure third place for the season. Coach – Miss Claire Wilson Intermediate B - Loreto won 36-5 in a fantastic game to conclude the season. All girls put in a top effort which was evident in the final score 36-5. Congratulations to Amber Schmidt, Brigid Oliver, Eloise Carroll, Georgia Burns, Katie Ware, Maddie Blanchfield, Madison Robertson, Mary-Kate Dennis, Megan O’Reilly and Olivia Mastry for their efforts throughout the season. Intermediate C – Congratulations to Loreto Intermediate C’s for their 16-11 grand final win over Mt Maria College and overall excellent netball season! The girls have shown considerable improvement as both players and a team since their first game, in which they were defeated by the very same team from whom they took the premiership. Jacqueline West, Rebecca Marshall, Katie Mirabito, Gabby Stein and Melissa Roberts were incredibly strong and determined in defence, while Zoe Zils, Abbey Martin, Rebecca Gray, Olivia McCarthy and Ashlee Nichol shone in attack. Thanks for a wonderful season! Coach – Bridget O’Connor Intermediate D - An amazing last game for all girls this week. I have watched the girls improve over the season, going from only winning one game last year to winning ALL but one this year. Unfortunately, we were narrowly defeated by the mixed Year 9 and 10 Lourdes Hill team. A big thank-you to all the girls for an enjoyable, fun filled season with many smiles and laughs. Congratulations to Greta Carlson, Hannah Dalton, Prue Hempel, Colette Hughes, Emma McEwan, Claudia Miotti, Anastasia O'Brien, Ruby Owen, Aimee Paholski and Hannah Radvan on their second placing this year. I look forward to catching up with you in the 2012 season. Coach- Emma Williams Open A – The Open A team concluded the season with a fifteen goal victory over Lourdes Hill College. In attack, we saw some excellent vision when feeding into the shooting circle from Netball captain Clare, lovely aerial takes from Georgia McNae and perfectly timed drives from Hannah Meecham. Defensively, Briony, Keryn and Josie zoned the Lourdes Hill shooters well, forcing them to throw balls over the baseline as well as picking up a few intercepts. Through the mid court the girls applied presssure through having hands over every pass, resulting in many a tip and intercept from both defenders and attackers. The final score was 34 to 19. Congratulations on playing such a neat, fast paced final game, ladies. It has been an absolute pleasure to coach each and every one of you this year - you have improved out of sight individually and as a team. I will miss your bright smiling faces at 6:45am on Monday mornings! Coach - Adeline Ryan Open B – Loreto defeated St John Fisher by 2 points in extra time! The entire game was goal for goal and the girls never once stopped fighting. Although St John Fisher had a sizable cheer squad, Loreto kept focussed and kept the score to 23 all. In extra time Loreto got some great support and encouragement that helped us over the line. Fantastic finish to what has been a great season. Congratulations girls! Coach - Larissa Hughes Open C –T he girls had a great win yesterday against Mt St Michaels -35 – 17. Everyone played so well, especially Alyssa who shot exceptionally. Results Round 8 - 3 August OPEN ONE Our final round was an exciting encounter with Mount St Michael’s Two. We arrived at Downey Park to be greeted by a dead possum in the middle of our pitch! Luckily this did not prove to be a bad omen for the afternoon. The match started off at a brisk pace (once the deceased marsupial was removed from the field) with Clare “the Gremlin” Griffiths putting the MSM defence immediately on the back foot through her penetrating runs into opposition territory. She was well supported by Jemma Stubbs, always on the hustle in the circle for a scoring opportunity and Elise Gellweiler hanging back, ready to pounce on any loose balls that came her way. The ball rarely found itself in our half for the majority of the game, resulting in almost all of our players having a chance at scoring by spending stints up high. Riley “Felafel” Nibbs facilitated this well at centre half, with accurate pre-emptive passing up to the strikers and solid midfield defence. After what must have been at least 15 unsuccessful shots at goal, Jemma Stubbs finally put one in the box late in the first half. A wave of relief spread over the Loreto girls once our account had been opened. Tyler Kilvington made the most of this situation with some very impressive carries into the circle ending in several powerful shots at goal with one finding the mark in spectacular fashion. Isobel Mowen relinquished some of her defending responsibilities to a very capable Brooke Postle at fullback so she could spend some time in the scoring zone and provided great distribution to Katherine Ware who scored two brilliant goals in the latter stages of the match. The 4-0 victory was a perfect way to wrap up what has been a thoroughly enjoyable trimester of hockey. It has been an absolute pleasure coaching the girls and I thank each of them for the positive attitude and sense of fun they carried into every match and training session. OPEN TWO A great finish to the season for the Loreto Two team defeating Brigidine 4-2. It was an intense first half with Loreto down a point coming into half time. The girls had an amazing second half working together to score 3 points and win the game. NAB Hockey Draw This week we found out that All Hallows School defeated Morton Bay College. Their game went into extra time. This means we will be playing All Hallows School in the final round for Division Seven. A date for the game is to be negotiated and will be advertised as soon as available. As we approach this date it is important that all players attend training sessions so that Lorraine (Coach) can feed instructions and game plans.
BSGA Soccer Grand Final Result Congratulations to the Loreto Junior A soccer team who played in the Grand Final of the 2011 BSGSA competition. Previously undefeated in the 2011 competition the girls went into the Grand Final confident they could win against their undefeated opponents Lourdes Hill College. The game was played in great sprit ended up 0-0 after full time. 10 mins extra time was then played with Loreto nearly scoring in the dying minutes to win the Grand Final, however even extra time could not break the 0-0 score and thus the GF went down to a penalty shoot to decide the winner. The penalty shoot out was 3 all after the first 5 kicks resulting in a sudden death shoot out. Sadly, Loreto missed their last penalty and thus lost the GF to LHC. Every girl played outstandingly however special mention must go to Jemima Moore who despite her size, kept us in the game with her outstanding effort in defence. For a team where half of the members have never played soccer previously, you have made us all very proud. Thank you. Special thanks to our Manager Katherine Stephanos and Loreto College staff of Chris Jones, Debbie Van Den Brink and Kieran Donnelly who attended and supported us at our games.

After the formal conference program has ended, an afternoon tea will be provided with live acoustic entertainment from some of Brisbane’s amazing up and coming talent. Important things for parents and visitors to Some History... The festival began in 1991 with 43 entries from 15 schools. Since then growth has occurred each and every year to over 350 performances by over 10,000 students from 85 schools in 2010. Last year this equated to nearly 100 hours of music performance. To cater for the ongoing growth of the festival we have expanded our venues to include Goold Hall and the Augustine Centre at Villanova, and both the church and hall at St James Church (one block South of Villanova). The festival has become a major event in the calendar of many Catholic schools and colleges throughout the State. Because of the outstanding service it provides to Catholic education, both the Queensland Catholic Education Commission and Brisbane Catholic Education sponsor the festival. Also, in 2006 Ellaways Music became our Major Sponsor and has shown great support by pledging to remain a long-term sponsor of the festival. As QCMF is a non-profit organisation, this and other sponsorship from the business community is crucial to covering the annual operating budget of approximately $45,000. Each year performance entry fees and audience admission prices are set to cover the balance of operating costs in staging the festival.
Get there early: To avoid missing a performance, ensure that you are at the correct venue, and that you’re there early. With respect to the performers, adjudicators and audience, once a performance begins the doors will close until the end of each performance. Some parents have been quite upset in the past when they have arrived late have been denied entry, so ensure you’re there early! Parking: Street parking is available around the College and St James Church, but it will be very busy, so plan for this wisely (arrive early, carpool, use public transport or prepare to have a good hike) so you don’t miss a performance.

Festival Entry Fees: As with all festivals, there is an entry fee to pay at the door, whether you plan to attend one performance or the entire weekend. The single-day fee is $5 for unlimited performances across 4 venues, or $10 for the entire four days. Food: Hot food, snacks, cold drinks and coffee are available to purchase on campus from a variety of vendors. Food is not permitted inside performance venues, in keeping with the lessons we all teach our students about concert hall etiquette.

How does the Villanova Community support QCMF?
Who participates in QCMF? Junior, Middle and Senior Catholic schools and colleges from Brisbane and South-East Queensland, as well as many other schools from Cairns, Mackay, Emerald, Gladstone, Townsville, Rockhampton, Maryborough, Bundaberg, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, and further. Colleges from New South Wales and even New Zealand have also attended.
Our Adjudicators The festival committee takes great care in selecting respected local and inter-state professional music educators who share the supportive and noncompetitive philosophy of the festival.
The Villanova College community is proud to have been organizing and presenting this festival for 19 years. This festival itself is a non-profit organization with its own committee, financial control and sponsorship which is completely separate from Villanova College. The committee is made up of Villanova teachers, parents, old boys, and local community members who have an enthusiasm for providing such a great service to Catholic school music programs. The College administration and staff are very supportive in preparing the entire college for over 10,000 visitors. Friday becomes a student-free day, and Villanova takes the Ekka Holiday on Thursday, when the classrooms are transformed to warm-up areas, the tuckshop gets reconfigured, and many other important changes are made to facilitate this great event. Each year there are more than 400 shifts requiring volunteers during the festival weekend. These priceless people take care of all of the backstage organization, escorting student ensembles to and from warm-up rooms, catering, manning the front-of-house, information booth, bus marshalling, and the list goes on. Please feel free to ask any volunteer any question you might have while you’re at the festival, and if the opportunity arises, give them a pat on the back - - it will be very appreciated!
When is QCMF? The festival always occurs during the last weekend of the Brisbane Exhibition in August. Both Villanova College and St James School have a student-free day on the Friday of this week to allow the Festival to run.

The Performance Process Performing ensembles go through a series of stages as a part of their festival performance. First, the ensemble meets and checks in at the Warm-Up area either at Villanova College or at St James Church. At the allocated time, the ensemble is led to a warm-up room to unpack instruments, organise music, and do some warming up. They will be collected by a volunteer to take them to a staging area near their performance space to await going on stage—this must be done in silence! They are then directed to the performance stage, and after finishing are returned to their warm-up room to pack up. At this point, the very best thing for them to do is return to the audience to enjoy other performances and to listen to the adjudication at the end of the section.
The QCMF Philosophy Festival‌ not Competition! Probably the most frequent comment we receive about the festival is that the atmosphere or vibe of the entire weekend is very positive. We like to think of the event as a celebration of all of the great things associated with performing music, and therefore do not award ranked winners.
Our Awards: In keeping with the non-competitive atmosphere, our awards system is very different than that of a competitive event. In order to take a positive and supportive approach to rewarding excellence in performance, we have a Gold, Silver and Bronze award system where every ensemble that successfully participates in any section will receive an award. A Certificate of Encouragement also exists for the very rare occurrence of an ensemble not successfully finishing their performance, hence not meeting the criteria of a bronze award. Therefore we will have student representatives of every ensemble on stage during the adjudication for that section.
