Volume 6 - 6 September, 2011 Dear Parents and Students “Finding God in all things” and “referring all to God”: these are the key concepts of the spirituality of St Ignatius and Mary Ward.

Throughout her life Mary Ward found free and open access to God. This image from the Painted Life portrays this. “The right hand side of the picture shows her in prayer. On the left hand side, divided from the other by a thick vertical line, are piled up all the symbols of power: tiara, cardinal’s hat, bishop’s mitre and crosier, royal crowns, helmets, swords, spears, flags, books and a chest full of coins. Across the dividing wall a ray of light from above, from God, falls on the praying figure, God’s hand is raised in a gesture of blessing.

The inscription on the picture explains that the good condition, growth and safety of her company did not consist in riches, high esteem or the favour of princes, but in the fact that the members “had free and open access to God from whom proceed all strength, light and protection.” In this representation it is clear that the metaphor of free and open access is taken from the feudal world where everything depended on being able to present your petition in the right place, and on having powerful advocates.”

How do we avail ourselves of free and open access to God? How does life become a conversation?

“To refer all to God is a way of dealing with reality by establishing a connection between ‘all’ and God. Things, actions, everything that happens to me, everything I encounter can be brought into connection with God.” God speaks to us then through whatever is going on around us and within us.

May we be attentive to God in every essence of our daily encounters, confident in His love and His desire for us to be complete. May we converse freely and openly so that we might come to know ourselves better in service of God. This we pray in earnest. Amen.

To the P & F for their generous sponsorship of last week’s Father Daughter Breakfast. It was a most successful morning with in excess of 200 guests. Special thanks to Mrs Libby Oliver for her co-ordination. We also raised over $400 for Aislinn Healy (Class of 2010) and her voluntary work in Tanzania.

CONGRATULATIONS  To our NAB Hockey team on their 2-1 victory over St Mary’s. They now proceed to the State Finals of the NAB Cup to be held in late October. We wish them well. 

To Lucia Palacios on her impressive ranking in the National Computer Programming competition. In the Junior competition (Years 7 and 8) Lucia was placed equal 7th, from 1000’s of entries, with an amazing score of 399 out of 400.

CONDOLENCES To Mrs Runge, Mrs Burgess and Mrs Davies on the recent passing of their Father, Father-in-law and Uncle respectively. We remember them in our prayers and offer heartfelt sympathies to them and their families. May James Valentine Burgess rest in eternal and loving peace.

P & F News Annual General Meeting Your P & F is having its AGM meeting this Tuesday (tonight) at 7.30pm in the staffroom. This does not mean that attendance will result in a job so please don’t be afraid; come and support those who do take on roles and listen to what’s happening in the Loreto Community. Your presence will be most welcome. The P & F is there as a forum for you, so please join us.

Hopefully all the fathers in the community feel spoilt after the wonderful breakfast that they had at the inaugural Father/Daughter breakfast last Friday! Over 200 were in attendance and a wonderful time was had. Of course this could not happen without a band of helpers. Special thanks go to those who continually assist with events and make sure they run smoothly and are enjoyed to the full. In particular, Alison McEneny and Muriel McLean from the tuckshop, who ordered and prepared the breakfast foods and Libby Oliver who willingly coordinated school resources and kept P and F members up to date. Thanks are extended to Mark Onions, John Henderson, Michael Mulcahy, Ljiljana Cokara and Anne Herft who prepared and cooked the breakfast. Our P&F Committee ladies - Kerri Fowler, Susan Milward, Mary Favios and Lyn Welch are also thanked especially for their help in serving and cleaning up. Lastly, thanks to you – students, staff and fathers for coming and supporting this event. $400 was raised to be sent to the Faraja Young Women’s Development Centre in Tanzania where 2010 graduate Aislinn Healy is working/volunteering. Grease Grease Auditions A special thank you to all of the girls who auditioned for ‘Grease’ last week, your efforts and enthusiasm were most impressive. The audition process highlighted the incredibly high standard of performance that we are fortunate to have here at Loreto and of course this makes the selection process extremely difficult. The list of dancers who have been selected has been published on the ‘Grease’ noticeboard while the Lead call back list will be published before exams begin this Thursday. Those students required to attend the lead call back audition on Tuesday 4 October at Villanova College will also receive materials to help you prepare for this audition. We aim to announce all leads, chorus members, musicians and crew mid-way through Term 4. In the meantime, we would like to thank everyone for their patience as this process has involved many students and staff members from both Villanova and Loreto College.

Geography News The past few weeks have proven to be a busy but exciting time within the Geography Department. Here are just a few of the activities in which some of the year levels have recently been involved.

Year 10 Geography – Fair Trade As part of their study in the unit “Big Business”, the Year 10 Geography classes have been investigating the notions of ethical consumerism and fair trade. To consolidate their understanding of these, guest speakers from Oxfams’ UQ Connect division recently came and spoke to the students, offering them practical ideas on how they could exercise their consumer sovereignty for the betterment of society. A stall displaying fair trade goods from Oxfams’ Chermside store was well attended at lunch, so well in fact that the store’s manager, Nathan, felt compelled to write - “I want to share with you the figures that Oxfam Shop received from the school. We wouldn’t usually discuss this outside of the work environment, but I thought you could share the exciting news. In the short time I was there, Oxfam Shop sold goods to the value of $454.05 – THIS IS AMAZING – Thank you so much. The girls also raised a further $50 as a Donation to Oxfams’ work through selling the drinking chocolate; another great effort.” Yes, this was really a wonderful result to achieve in less than one hour and we would like to thank Nathan as well as the guest speakers, Jude and Maddie from UQ Connect, for volunteering their time on the day. We would also like to thank Jenna Nash as head of the Social Justice Council and her committee for their work on the day in helping to promote this worthy cause.

Year 8 Geography – Field Trip to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, Maleny The Year 8’s recently undertook their first Geography field trip and here is what Leah Carey from 8 White had to say about it. “As part of our term 3 work on rainforests Year 8 had the privilege to visit the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. During our trip we were taken on a walk through the Reserve to discover information about how rainforests work; why they are important; what animals live there and how we can help preserve rainforests, in an entertaining way that couldn’t be replicated in a classroom. With interesting, informative guides sharing everything they knew about the reserve and its history, it was a fun, beneficial and entertaining day”.

Thank you, Leah. Of course, it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of a number of people on the day. These included Bob Taylor and his team of excellent volunteer guides from the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. A big thank you also needs to go to the parents who helped out on both days: Anna Stafford (Rachael 8BL), Judy Daw (Kathleen 8BL), Melissa Lorimer (Emma 8WH), Helen Clarke (Kristen 8GR), Marina Pennisi (Sabrina 8RE), Kimon Kotzas (Alana’s Dad 8GO) and Gigi Sagner (Natasha 8GO). Drama News MARY POPPINS BOOKING—WEDNESDAY 15 FEBRUARY 2012

Dear Parents and Students Those students who have booked tickets for “Mary Poppins” on Wednesday 15 February, 2012, should have received a payment form last week. We are hoping to finalise this booking by the last week of this term. Congratulations to Year 8 Drama student Zoe Clarke (8 Gold) who has been shortlisted to play the leading child role of Jane Banks in the multi-award winning musical, “Mary Poppins”. We wish Zoe all the very best as she anxiously awaits to hear the outcome of her audition in approximately one month’s time. Regardless of the outcome Zoe, we are very proud of your incredible achievement!

I have attached Zoe’s reflection on her auditioning experience below: “On 23 August I auditioned for the role of Jane Banks in the musical, Mary Poppins. It was an incredible experience and I enjoyed it so much! There were 3 groups and I was in the third, in total there were about 130 girls who got an offer to audition after they sent in their resume and photo.

When I arrived at QPAC there were about 30 girls ready to audition and about 10 arrived later on. I got measured against a line to make sure I was within the height limit and my mum had to fill in some forms. I went into the audition room and I was really nervous because it was my first audition like this and I was competing against girls who had done heaps of auditions before.

There was a panel out the front of the room with the Music Director and the Director of the show. They were both incredibly nice and they made me feel a little bit more relaxed. The first thing we did was learn a song called "Let's Go Fly a Kite". We sang it as a group by the piano and then we got into groups of 3 and 4 and sang some of the lines by ourselves. We then got sent downstairs to the foyer and waited for a woman to come down and tell us who goes to the next round. About 25 girls got to the next round including me! It was such a sigh of relief when my name got called but a little scream of excitement at the same time! In the next round we sang some lines from "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" by ourselves; we sang "Let’s Go Fly a Kite" while pretending to fly a kite at the same time and we got given a line to say angrily at the judges. Next we went downstairs and waited for the woman to come and announce the call backs. 10 girls got called back for the next day including me, I was so excited!

We had to be at QPAC at 10.00am the next day and when we got there I got measured again but with a tape measure this time!

There were about 23 girls that day and also 6 boys. The first thing we did when we got to the studio was sing the whole chorus of "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" by ourselves. We then sang a song from the musical with the boys and we had to pretend they were our brothers. We went downstairs and waited. Only 9 girls got to the next round which is less than half and I was so surprised when my name was called! In the next round we learnt a dance and a sequence from the corner of the room. This was a really fun part of the day because I am a dancer so it was my kind of thing and we could put heaps of expression on our face. We went downstairs again and did some more waiting! The lady came down and called out only 6 names and mine was one of them, I could not believe it! We had to leave the building for an hour and a half so the directors could have a lunch break! My mum and I went to the Museum and we had some lunch, my mum got a cup of tea, but the time just seemed to be going so slowly! We met back at the building at 1.30pm and went on with our audition. In this round we got a script and had to read Jane's line out to the Director. The Director played ‘Mary Poppins’ while the Jane and Michael read their lines. It was a scene where Jane got really angry and bratty so it was a bit hard for me because I didn't want to not be angry enough or be too over the top. We went downstairs and waited. The lady came and announced only 4 names I could not believe it when my name got called. I was so shocked and could not believe I was in the top 4 in Brisbane out of hundreds who applied! When the four of us went upstairs we were videoed singing a song with a boy and acting out the scene we had previously learnt. They told us we would find out in a month if we got the part or not because they still have to audition Sydney and Melbourne. They will send the videos overseas and the Disney executives will make the final decision! They will chose 4 girls to share the role of Jane and the girls would have to be performing for 6 months, 3 in Brisbane and 3 in Perth! We would continue our school work with a tutor and they will provide us accommodation.

I know it is a pretty slim chance of getting the role so I’m trying to keep everything in perspective. I will certainly not be upset if I do not get the role because I know I have had an amazing experience and I would never change any minute of it!” Zoe Clarke (8 Gold)

Music News Broadway with Rachel Beck and Ian Stenlake The end-of-year performance for our Senior Choir and Symphony Orchestra will be a two night event at Villanova College’s Broadway show (Thursday 20 and Friday 21 October). At the end of each year, Villanova College runs a big themed event that has featured professional guest soloists such as James Morrison, the Grigoryan Brothers and Idea of North. This year the event will have a Broadway theme and feature singers Rachel Beck (Australian productions of “Les Miserable”, “Singing in the Rain”, “The Sound of Music” and “Beauty and the Beast”, TVs “It Takes Two”) and Ian Stenlake (“Guys and Dolls”, “The Pyjama Game”, “Sleeping Beauty”, Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight, TVs “Stingers” and “Sea Patrol”). This will be a fantastic show with music from The Lion King, Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast, Jesus Christ Superstar, Chess, Miss Saigon and many other favourite Broadway shows. Tickets will be $30 and can only be pre-booked by contacting Villanova Music Department (3394 5691) or returning the attached flyer to the Loreto or Villanova school offices.

Debating News Loreto’s 9.1 Debating team, coached by Mrs Helen Radvan, faced Brisbane State High School in the QDU Semi-Finals last Friday night.

Unfortunately the girls did not win the debate. However, they debated with great skill and those present including Mrs Anne Heathcote, Vail Bromberger, Jess Marshall, family members and myself, all were immensely proud of each girl’s effort. The girls work as a team and present as confident, well-mannered, intelligent and well-informed young women.

Girls, while we felt your sense of disappointment, we believed you were, and are, ‘winners’ in the true sense of the word.

Our congratulations and thanks for all the hard work and long hours go to Madeleine Lloyd, Rebecca Marshall, Hannah Radvan and Meghan Shannon!

English News As part of the Brisbane Writers’ Festival, Sarah King (Year 9) has been chosen to read an extract from her short story on September 8 at Avid Reader Bookshop at West End. The American author, Maile Meloy, has written a young adult novel and Sarah will read her extract as part of the event to launch this novel. This is a great opportunity for Sarah to experience reading in public and we congratulate her.

Information & Computing Technology Competitions 2011 NCSS Challenge The five week competition has now ended and all fourteen participants can have a rest from the computer programming. Even though there was a drop off in participation as the questions got harder it is pleasing to see many students continued to try questions they did not complete at a later stage. Congratulations to Lucia Palacios for completing all fifty questions and scoring 399 from a possible result of 400. A great effort by all participants and hope you enjoyed the experience, well done! Certificates will be presented to each student who took part in the completion once they are received from the University of Sydney.

NAB Hockey Semi Final - Loreto College defeated St Mary’s College – Thursday 1 September 2011 Congratulations to the coach, captain and players on yet another terrific effort to win the Semi Final round against St Mary’s College. Loreto College has now qualified for a berth in the finals to be held this October.

Play in the first half of the game was slow. Even though a number of attempts were made by both teams the score remained nil all at half time. Loreto dominated play but remained unable to convert a number of short corner or field goal opportunities. The second half didn’t quite start as scheduled with sprinklers suddenly jumping to life right on the siren to begin play. If this was a ploy to put us off it did not work. Refreshed from the unexpected drenching Loreto picked up pace applying enough pressure to break through the defense and score the first goal for the game from an skillfully executed field goal. Even though the game looked as though it was over both teams went on to score a further goal each in the dying minutes of the game. At the close of business Loreto College defeated St Mary’s College two goals to one to win the Semi Final round and qualify for the finals. Goal scorers for the game were Georgia and Murphy both with one goal each. An excellent effort by all team members, well done! Once again the game did not go without incident with two players being hit with stray balls. Lauren and Isabel, although bruised, were back at school the next day.

Final Round and Future Training Sessions As the winners of our divisions Semi Final Loreto has now qualified for a position in the final four teams to make the finals to be held at the State Hockey Centre in October. The finals are to be run over three days. Details of draw and rules for the finals will be forwarded to us soon. Training will commence in Term Four on Tuesday of the first week back. Until then enjoy the break.

Flying Start Program Cameron Dick, the Minister for Education and Industrial Relations and the State Member for Greenslopes is hosting a second forum on changes to the education system in Queensland including changes to education during the early years. This includes the Government’s exciting universal access to kindergarten program and the childcare reforms as a result of the National Quality Framework developed in conjunction with the Commonwealth Government.

This forum is for local parents, teachers and school staff to explain the next stage of exciting reforms to education in Queensland. St Vincent de Paul Migration Advice Service is a free visa advice service in the Gold Coast & Logan areas. As its continuing commitment to the poor and needy, St Vincent de Paul will offer this advisory service to those who cannot afford the services of a migration agent/lawyer. The service will be offered every second and fourth Tuesday evening (6.00pm-9.00pm) of each month at the Infant Saviour Church in 4 Park Avenue, Burleigh Heads, and the first Saturday of each month (10.00am-1.00pm) at St Paul’s Church in 3 St Paul’s Drive, Woodridge, Logan. The service will be serviced by volunteers, and advice is provided by qualified migration agents. Consultations will strictly be by appointment on a first come first serve basis. Young Endeavour Training Ship Australia's national sail training ship Young Endeavour is now accepting applications for youth to join eleven day voyages departing between January and June 2012. Young Australians aged 16 to 23 can apply for the ballot at www.youngendeavour.gov.au until 30 September 2011.

No sailing experience is required. A voyage in Young Endeavour is an amazing experience, and a unique opportunity for youth to develop teamwork and leadership skills through a world recognised organisation. ATHLETICS SPORTING BILLETS Loreto College has been asked to provide accommodation for up to 6 female billets while they are attending the Queensland School Sport 19 Years & Under Track & Field State Championships starting Thursday 20 October until Sunday 23 October 2011. The students will be arriving on Wednesday 19 October between 2.30pm & 3.00pm at the school and will need to be accommodated for 4 nights. The students are between 13 - 19 years old.

Please consider your ability to assist as it is always difficult to find accommodation for the billets and any volunteers would be greatly appreciated.
