Volume 1 - August 2, 2011 Dear Parents and Students Our Semester II College Mass celebrated the theme “A Heart of Flesh”. Loreto is a school deeply immersed in the mission of the Heart. We place learning not only “at the heart” of all we do but we also strongly emphasize the importance of learning ‘about the heart’ and ‘from the heart’. From the Catholic Catechism, the Heart is: the dwelling place where I am, where I live, my home; my hidden centre, beyond the grasp of our reason and that of others. Our inner heart is our soul; it is the very essence of our being. Fr Christopher Gleeson SJ captures our mission of the Heart well when he speaks of education being “a process of learning to savour what moves and affects our hearts and minds”. The heart is commonly reached, not through reason, but through imagination; and it is imagination that allows us to put a mirror to our own experiences - and in that reflection, to discover the true meaning for ourselves and others. Learning ‘about the heart’ is to discover who and what we are and what it is that gives meaning to our lives. Teaching this love of self is a transforming process that develops the whole person in relationship with self and others and it is in that love of others that we are called to give ‘from the heart’.
We pray for the fragile ecology of the heart and the mind. The sense of meaning. So finely assembled and balanced and so easily overturned. The careful, ongoing, construction of love. As painful and exhausting as the struggle for truth and as easily abandoned. Hard fought and won are the shifting sands of this sacred ground, this ecology. Easy to desecrate and difficult to defend, this vulnerable joy, this exposed faith, this precious order. This sanity. We shall be careful. With others and with ourselves. Amen. Michael Leunig
We thus congratulate each recipient of a Semester I Honour Pocket. These girls, who were presented with their Honour Pockets after last Thursday’s Mass, have given ‘from the heart’ – both generously and selflessly. These fine young women exemplify Mary Ward values in their hearts and minds and through their actions. We are proud to duly acknowledge their fine example of what it means to be Loretian through commitment and service. We warmly congratulate these Year 12 Students: Murphy Allendorf Hockey Aishling Briody School Spirit Vail Bromberger Debating & Academic Excellence Leah Brown Academic Excellence
