Volume 11 - 25 October, 2011 Dear Parents and Students Yesterday our students celebrated “Pink Day� to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research. I wish to congratulate the leaders on the wonderful success of their efforts and I offer this prayer in thanks.

We pray for compassion towards those who suffer and those who have lost someone dear to cancer; We pray for courage to face the trials of the challenges that come with cancer; We pray for collaboration between doctors, researchers and carers of cancer patients, such that improvements to treatments might be discovered; And most earnestly we pray that cures to cancers will be found.

May the pink ribbons we wear bring smiles, laughter, hope and comfort to those affected.

May they come to see that they are never alone.

We stand with them, woman to woman, in pink. Amen.

CONGRATULATIONS 

To the talented musicians who performed in last week’s BROADWAY concert with Villanova. It was a sensational concert, absolutely brilliant. Those fortunate enough to attend enjoyed an amazing evening’s entertainment. Thank you to all members of the combined Symphony Orchestra and Choir. You were marvellous.



To the Loreto Hockey team who last weekend played in the State Finals of the NAB Competition. We congratulate them on their marvellous success in winning the Bronze medal (3rd place). Special thanks to Mrs Lorraine Hillas and Mr Alan Lane-Richardson for all their support and encouragement.



To all music students who performed at Sunday’s Live and Wired Festival. What a stunning achievement for you all.

Ancient History Excursion - Year 12 The Year Twelve Ancient History class recently spent the morning at the University of Queensland St Lucia campus engaged in a ‘hands on’ archaeology workshop investigating The Valley of the Kings in Egypt through artefacts 3000 years old. These artefacts are part of the R.D.Milns Antiquities Museum collection which is the largest collection of classical antiquities in Queensland. The workshop tested the detective skills of the students as each group was given a box of artefacts from a tomb of the 18 th dynasty and as a group they had to build the ‘story’ of the person from the few artefacts in their box. This was an opportunity for the girls to apply their knowledge of archaeology and Egyptian funerary practices to a case study scenario. The girls rose to the challenge and enjoyed testing their skills before spending time on a tour of the collection.

Drama News Creative Arts Week Creative Arts Week celebrations are in full swing with Dance, Drama, Music and Art events and activities taking place around the school. The annual ‘30 Seconds of Fame Talent Quest’ heats are in the final stages and the final selection will be announced tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon. The final will take place during lunchtime this Thursday 27th October in MWC. Entry will be by gold coin donation.

Year 10 Collage Drama Year 10 Drama students have been busy rehearsing at every available opportunity in preparation for their Collage Drama Performances on Monday 31st October and Tuesday 1st November at 7pm on the Mary Ward Centre stage. The girls have their Technical Rehearsal this coming Sunday 30th October, 2011.

We are still needing parental assistance with the organisation and serving of supper for both these evenings. If any parents of Year 10 Drama students can assist us on either evening we would be very appreciative as we cannot run this event effectively without your generous support. Please send an email to Helen Radvan – radvanh@loreto.qld.edu.au or return the slip which is attached to the letter that was sent home at the beginning of term. The 2012 Jean Trundle Memorial Theatre Bursary The Jean Trundle Memorial Theatre Bursary is awarded annually to a young Queenslander in memory of the late Jean Trundle, a founder of the Brisbane Arts Theatre and a well-known Speech and Drama Teacher in Brisbane for many years. The $1000 Bursary is designed to assist young people intending to make a career in some field of Theatre. Any Year 12 Drama student who is interested in applying for the 2012 Jean Trundle Memorial Theatre Bursary needs to collect an application form from Mrs Radvan. Applications close on Wednesday 30 November. Entrants will be contacted in the New Year for an interview and the Bursary winner will be announced in early February.

Music News Congratulations - To the many Loreto Students who performed in the Broadway Show and at the Live & Wired Music Festival over the past week. Both events were incredibly successful with large crowds and amazing feedback from not only the audience but also the professional performers who worked with you. Rachel Beck and Ian Stenlake send their congratulations to all members of Orchestra, Senior Choir and the Djembe percussionists. Local member and Minister for Education, Mr Cameron Dick, dropped in on Sunday to see for himself the amazing musical talent at Loreto. What a fantastic way to finish a busy, busy week of music!

Music Night – This Friday, all remaining Loreto music ensembles will perform at the annual Music Night Concert. The concert will run from 6pm to 9pm and attendance for performing students is compulsory. Complete details regarding concert program, arrival times, warm-up rooms etc can be found at the back of this newsletter and posted on the Music Noticeboard. Could all performing students also remember to bring a small plate of food for supper? This plate can be delivered to the MWC canteen on arrival.

Mega Raffle – Please make sure you have now returned your mega raffle tickets, sold or unsold, as the raffle will be drawn at the Music Night concert this week. All tickets must be accounted for so your cooperation with returns is appreciated.

Ensemble Auditions – Audition times for Sundays Ensemble Auditions have now been published on the Music Noticeboard and school Intranet. Please check these times carefully and make sure you attend promptly as the day is too busy to run late!

Music Scholarships - Each year, the Music Department offers a number of part-scholarship covering ¼ or ½ of lesson tuition fees to interested and deserving students. Scholarship recipients are kept strictly confidential. These scholarships continue for one year and are dependent upon the recipients’ regular attendance and demonstrated effort. Students who wish to apply for a scholarship for 2012 should collect an Application Form from the Music Office as soon as possible and return it to the College by Friday 28 October. Late applications will not be considered.

Double Bass Scholarships - Over the past week, senior students demonstrated Double Bass playing to all Year 8 classes. In addition to the scholarships listed above, the Music Department will be offering a number of half scholarships for students in Year 8 or 9 who wish to learn double bass. The College will loan selected students an instrument and pay for half of annual lesson fees (remaining $16.25/week to be paid by parents). Lessons would start in the last few weeks of this term and continue through next year under this arrangement. If your daughter is interested in learning Double Bass and participating in school ensembles, please have her collect a Scholarship Application form from the Music Office and return it to the school by this Friday 28 October.

Chorale Auditions 2012 – As we are currently looking to employ a new Music Teacher and Choral Conductor, there will be no auditions for the 2012 Chorale this weekend. Students who are currently in the chorale in 2011 have been told that they will be allowed to continue into the group next year without the need for an audition. There will still be another 4-8 places available in the ensemble for 2012 and auditions for these positions will be held either at the end of this year or the very start of next year once an appropriate conductor has been employed.

Mega Raffle – Congratulations to Louise Chan (11 Red) and Bridget Clark (9 White) who returned their sold book of tickets promptly and won last week’s student prize draw. They received 2 free movie tickets and a handmade bag from Cambodia. Anther prize draw will be held this Tuesday.

Millinery Service The school will be engaging the services of a milliner to clean, stiffen and re-block hats over the Christmas holidays. Cost will be $22. Hats that require extra attention e.g. extra cleaning , repair etc will be charged at a higher price. More information regarding collection dates will be available towards the end of term.

Booklists Symons Booklist are now on the Loreto Web Page. Hard copies will no longer be supplied to students. Orders have to be placed directly through Symons via their web site.

Results: Round 5 – 19 October Open A were defeated by Mt Alvernia 40 to 36 This was a very close fought match for the full forty minutes. The difference was in the fabulous perimeter shooting displayed by one of the Mt Alvernia players who made five three point shots. Loreto fought hard right through until the end of the match, just coming up short this week.

Open B defeated Brigidine 44 to 19 From the onset, it was obvious that Loreto were the stronger team. Rebounding and court enthusiasm was a highlight, with all players contributing well while on the court. Sarah Pettiford, Stephanie Esprester and Michaela MacLean were outstanding in attack, scoring several excellent shots. A pleasing win, well done!

Intermediate A were defeated by Lourdes Hill 65 to 12 Lourdes Hill were a stronger team and Loreto struggled to prevent their quick scoring baskets. The fast pace of the game made it difficult for Loreto to gain any potency in attack. It was pleasing to see that players did not give up and worked hard for the full forty minutes. Well done!

Intermediate B defeated Mt Alvernia 28 to 18 This was a vastly different game from last week’s encounter. Loreto focused on defense and it certainly paid off. Prue Hempel delivered some accurate passes while Madeleine Taylor was dominant throughout the match. Mt Alvernia had held the lead for the entire match, but Loreto surged home outscoring them by 14 points to 2 in the final quarter. A super win!

Junior A defeated All Hallows 33 to 10 This was an excellent win for Loreto. Outstanding defense won the match and Julia Logan and Kate O’Sullivan lead the way in this aspect.

Accuracy in shooting has improved and this has allowed Loreto to gain momentum in the final rounds of the season. Keep up the hard work at training, as it is obviously paying off with strong wins!

Open A: Coach: Therese Begley A technically well-played game in attack, with all players executing rucking and attack patterns as practiced. As players all must now look to go that step further and ‘read’ what is the best play in front of you – run at the gap! Greater sliding and moving forward in defence to cover attackers sweeping will cut off the overlap. It was wonderful to see all players run so hard and give maximum effort at all times. An Improvement in game performance from Bridget Myers and another busy game from Hayman Lui.

Intermediate A Coach: Adam Guest A tight match featuring great defence that finished in a two-all draw. Fantastic efforts from Eloise Carroll and Lauren around the ruck led to touchdowns by Emmeline-Kate Ball and Zoe-Lee Sperro.

Intermediate B Coach: Eliza Mooney & Ellen Luxton A great game for the team to defeat OLC! The girls made accurate attacking plays scoring 3 touchdowns within the first 5 minutes .Well done, girls, for the great defensive effort, keeping OLC scoreless for the majority of the game. Top effort from Alyssa Bell and Abigail Raison.

Hannah Meecham - 17 years. Hannah made it to the final in the 100m and 200m sprint. She was awarded Bronze in the final for the 100m sprint and 7 th in the 200m final.

Eloise Jackson – 16 years competed in the Javelin and was awarded 7th in the final Sarah Novic – 14 years competed in the 100m heat and was placed 6th and the 200m heat was awarded 7th Georgia Klinkas – 14years competed in the Shot Put and was in the best top 25 in the state.

Nab Hockey Finals Friday 21st - Sunday 22nd October Over the weekend the participation and commitment of all players was outstanding. Even though two early losses against Clayfield College and then Kirwan SHS dampened spirits, a win against Aldridge SHS was what was required to lift the spirits as Loreto went into the final round against Aldridge SHS on the Sunday to play for bronze. The outcome of the final game played on Sunday against Aldridge SHS has placed Loreto College as bronze medal winners for NAB Cup Hockey Girls 2011 competition, well done!

Student Art Exhibition 2011 The annual student art exhibition will celebrate Creative Arts Week on Friday 28th October from 3.30-6.30pm in the Mulwith Art Area. Art Prizes and Commendation Awards will be awarded to students in each year level. These awards will be announced at the School Assembly on Tuesday and Certificates will be distributed in art classes next week. Entry to the exhibition is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

St Vincent de Paul News Our thanks to the members who assisted on the Rice Day. They were mostly from Year 11 and Year 9. Thank you also to the Year 8 Home Economics class who heated the rice and sauce before lunch. We could not have done it without the advice and organisation by Mrs Wood and Mrs Ham in the Home Economics Department. Our thanks to Mrs McEneny, our Tuckshop Convenor , who used the rice cooker to expedite the cooking. All the students who supported us by buying a container of rice have experienced the everyday meals of those who live in many of the developing countries. The funds raised will go towards the purchase of treadle sewing machines for women in the villages in East Timor. These people only have a subsistence living without a means of supporting themselves. Three members from Year 10 sold hand-woven products from East Timor on the Rice Day. Thank you for looking after the stall on Rice Day. We have raised considerable funds through the sale of these items. Next Wednesday we have the elections for the 2012 Board, and the Breakup at Sizzlers Carindale in the evening. Thursday is the Blind Day for fund-raising as well as a sweet stall on the same day. Congratulations to the members who have made all of these activities work this term.

Music Night 2011 Friday 28 October 6pm to 9pm Attendance: It is compulsory for all students in performing ensembles to attend the Music Night in which their group is performing. Arrival times and venues are listed below. It is expected that students stay for the duration of the concert, even if their own performance has been completed. Any variation to this expectation requires written notification from parents and negotiation with the Director of Music.

Any students who are only performing in the second half of the concert are to arrive BY 7pm, leave their instruments in the appropriate warm-up venue and return to the audience to sit with their parents for the first half of the concert. At intermission, meet your conductor at your warm up room and then sit in the seating that has been reserved for students.
