The Constitutions of the IBVM Vol II As promised, over recent months the College leadership team has closely analysed the thousands of open response statements made by parents, staff and students in response to the whole school survey. The following is a summary of the positives for Loreto: More than 85% of parents this year nominated the following as the areas they liked most about Loreto:  Caring, accepting, welcoming community, pastoral care  Values/ethos – Catholic/Christian/Mary Ward/Social Justice  Dedicated/caring staff  My daughter is happy at school  Beautiful grounds  Good academic standards/good reputation  Caters for individual/Personal Development  Good balanced education  Big Sister/Little Sister program Similarly over 85% of staff indicated the following areas as those they most valued:  Community: good relationships & mutual respect staff/staff & staff/students  Feeling valued by leadership team  Student behaviour and positive attitude to learning  Adherence to the Mission Statement/Mary Ward ethos  Good structures in place to enhance teaching & learning  Working conditions and professional development opportunities And over 85% of the students identified the following areas as being the best things about Loreto:  Friends/Friendliness/ Kindness  Teachers/Learning  Community/Spirit/Belonging/Family  Grounds/Environment  Caring/Nurturing/ Safe These wonderfully positive responses add to the previously published data and provide further strong affirmation for the governance of the College and the inspiring leadership of Ms Dunne over 20 years. They are a testament to her vision and to the commitment of all in the community to achieving the ideals of Mary Ward.

In response to survey suggestions about future improvements, the “Curriculum & Learning Advisory Committee (CLAC)” has this term commenced their exciting work. Their task is to:  Review the current core curriculum and electives that are available and to make recommendations for improvements and changes from 2013;  Review the current timetable in accordance with the above and to accommodate the impending implementation of the Australian Curriculum;  Explore various Middle Years Teaching & Learning frameworks that could further enhance student engagement, teaching and learning;  Recommend Teaching & Learning resourcing needs;  Recommend facilities development to support teaching and learning imperatives; and  Review the assessment policy and practices for Middle Years.

Our ICT strategy for the future including the provision of a 1:1 student laptop program (to be phased in for students from 2012) has been announced and very well received. Additionally, the Sports Department has commenced strategic development work to seek increased opportunities for student participation in sport to match the high demand and to increase, over time, the range of sports available at Loreto. Finally, we will be looking to improve our “uniform presentation” under the direction of the student leaders and the Year Coordinators - to promote, encourage and enforce higher standards. Of course, to achieve this, we will need the essential commitment of teachers and parents. In anticipation, I thank you for your support.

Clearly, there are exciting times ahead as we seek to make these improvements and to prepare the way for the introduction of Year 7 in 2015.

CONGRATULATIONS  To our talented and committed musicians and choristers on their magnificent performances as part of the Catholic Schools’ Music Festival. Your efforts and commitment over many months were certainly rewarded with 11 Gold, 5 Silver and 2 Bronze awards from 18 performances. Well done to all involved. 

To our energetic and skilled athletics team who performed so well at yesterday’s CSGSSA Athletics carnival. We were delighted and proud, as a school, to be there to cheer you on. Your perseverance and commitment to training this year has been excellent. Overall we came a credible 6th, but most pleasing was that we came 3rd on the percentage trophy. Thank you to the fabulous PE and Sports department, in particular Ms Stevens and Ms Gore, and all staff and students for your generous contribution in making the carnival such a success.

Drama News Mary Poppins Booking Thank you for your interest in booking for "Mary Poppins". There are no more tickets available for the production of “Mary Poppins” Wednesday 15th February 2012. Those students/parents who have put their name down for tickets will soon be notified about payment arrangements.

Year 11 Drama Theatre Visit to “Animal Farm” This Friday 26th August, 2011, Year 11 Drama students will be attending a 10.00 am performance of “Animal Farm” at the Cremorne Theatre at QPAC, South Brisbane. This performance will form the basis of an assessment task and therefore attendance is compulsory. There will be no charge for this theatre visit. Students will travel to The Cremorne Theatre by bus and will return to school via bus by 11.45am. The students will therefore, need to bring books for Periods 1, 4, and 5 & 6.

Parents/Guardians should have already received a letter including a permission form outlining the details of this theatre visit.

To acknowledge that you are aware of this excursion, could I ask you to please complete and have your daughter promptly return the permission form that is attached to the letter. We still have quite a few outstanding forms. If through illness, your daughter is unable to attend on the day of the excursion, you should phone Mrs Radvan on ph: 33949929 or leave a message at the Main Office as a non -refundable ticket has been booked and paid for on your daughter’s behalf and will need to be reallocated. Queensland Arts Council - Holiday Camp M.A.D. (Music, Art, Drama, Dance Spring School) 18th - 24th September Queensland Arts Council are hosting a week long camp for students interested in either Music, Art, Drama or Dance during the first week of the September holidays. Audition opportunity for interested Drama students Markwell Presents Cinematic Theatre Company is holding auditions on Saturday 15th October, 2011 for the YAIR Project 2012. “The Young Artists in Residence Project is an opportunity for young theatre makers to work and play in a marque venue with a professional theatre company. YAIR is open to 15 to 18 year olds who would like to take part in a 14 week project where they co-devise a new play with professional artists and then rehearse in preparation to perform and produce a one hour cinematic theatre show for a short season at the Judith Wright centre. Language Department News Japanese Trip Meeting There will be an information meeting on Monday 29th August at 7:00pm in room 403 to discuss the proposed exchange to Yokohama, Japan in June/July 2012. Music News QCMF – Congratulations to all students who performed at the Catholic Colleges Music Festival over the past weekend. It was an amazing weekend for Loreto Music with fantastic performances by all 18 ensembles that participated. Special thanks must go to the conductors who worked so hard to assist the girls to perform at their best. Full results from the weekend (in performance order) were as follows: Guitar Ensemble Two - Gold Award, Exit Stage Left - Silver Award, Guitar Ensemble One - Gold Award, Sorelle - Gold Award, Senior Choir - Silver Award, Concert Band One – Gold Award, Percussion Ensemble Two - Gold Award, Clarinet Ensemble - Gold Award, Percussion Ensemble One - Silver Award, Junior Choir - Bronze Award , Spatula Guitar Nonette - Gold Award, Flute Ensemble One - Gold Award, Chorale - Gold Award, Jazz Ensemble - Silver Award, String Ensemble - Gold Award, Concert Band Two - Silver Award, Flute Ensemble Two - Bronze Award, Symphony Orchestra - Gold Award. That is a total of 11 Gold Awards, 5 Silver Awards and 2 Bronze Awards! Additionally, congratulations to Isabella Kirkman who was chosen by the adjudicators to receive an Outstanding Achievement Award for her solo work within the Senior Choir’s performance. Well done to all students on a great weekend of music.

All Choirs - At the end of each year, Villanova College runs a big themed event that features professional guest soloists such as James Morrison, the Grigoryan Brothers etc. This year the event will have a Broadway theme and feature singers Rachel Beck (Australian productions of “Les Miserable”, “Singing in the Rain”, “The Sound of Music” and “Beauty and the Beast”, TVs “It Takes Two”) and Ian Stenlake (“Guys and Dolls”, “The Pajama Game”, “Sleeping Beauty”, Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight, TVs “Stingers” and “Sea Patrol”). Villanova have invited members of Loreto’s Senior Choir to participate in a combined choir for this event. Rehearsals will be held initially at Loreto on Tuesday afternoons at our normal rehearsal time. Final rehearsals will then be held at Villanova all day on Monday 17 October (student free Panel Day) with the concerts on the evenings of Thursday 20 October and Friday 21 October.

Senior Choir students in Years 10-12 who would like to participate, and who are able to commit to all these dates, are invited to become involved and initially just need to keep attending their regular Tuesday rehearsals. These performances will then become your end of year concert for 2011. All singers in Years 8 and 9, or in the older grades who can’t commit to the Broadway Concert schedule, will be invited to join a Massed Choir, rehearsing on Thursday mornings before school, to prepare repertoire for the Music Night on Friday 28 October.

Music Camp – All members of Concert Band One are reminded that our last major commitment for Term Three will be a performance at the Primary Music Camp concert at 2:30 pm Sunday 28 August. We would also like to ask all members of the String Ensemble to perform at this concert. Some senior members of each group will be invited to attend earlier in the day to act as section leaders and tutors. This camp is an important service that Loreto provides to local primary schools and they are always very appreciative that our students make such an effort to help them learn music and give them the opportunity to hear advanced groups performing. Could members of both String Ensemble and Concert Band One please arrive at the Mary Ward centre by 2 pm this Sunday to prepare for your performance.

Mary Ward Grant 2012 In order to promote the dignity and role of women in church and society, the Mary Ward Grant was established to support specialist or post-graduate study of theology, spirituality and pastoral ministry. This is a partial grant to assist applicants who have financial need, including those seeking to complete the final year of under-graduate study. Priority is given to Catholic lay women. Other applications will be given serious consideration. Grants will be offered at the discretion of the Grant Committee. Each application will be treated confidentially on an individual basis, and no discussion on the outcome will be entered into. Applications close WEDNESDAY 12 October 2011. NCSS Computer Challenge Competition 2011 NCSS Challenge Update - Week 4 of the five week competition has begun and as expected the questions are starting to get harder. This will mean you will need to read the notes provided and practice solving the questions using the Python IDLE software before attempting the questions online.

At the end of Week 3, it is pleasing to see at least seven students have attempted a range of questions from the last two weeks and two have completed all thirty questions to score 199 points from the possible 200 so far. Well done everyone!

As the questions are becoming more difficult, please use the help offered by the University or come to Room 210 during lunch times for assistance.

P & F News Father and Daughter Breakfast by the Pool Announcing the 2011 Father and Daughter Breakfast by the Pool. Please bring your dad to school early on Friday September 2. From 7am onwards, the P and F will provide a breakfast for dads and their daughters. The cost is a gold coin donation towards Loreto’s Mission Appeals. Please come along and join other dads to celebrate this special day. You will dine on a bacon and egg roll with plenty of fresh fruit and juice. There will also be the opportunity to purchase tea and coffee from a mobile coffee van—thanks to Mr Cappa Gino. Student Laptop Program In addition to the information provided in last week’s newsletter some further details about the Loreto College Student Laptop Program beginning for Year 8 students in Term 2, 2012 and Yr 10 students in Term 3, 2012 is provided below.

Cost The cost for this program cannot be finalised until costs for hardware, accidental damage cover and software are established. It is hoped to keep the cost to around $150 per term. At the end of the lease period the ownership of the device would be transferred to the parent.

What are the benefits of a student laptop program?

The medium of learning and teaching must be a reflection of the prevailing information transfer method in society.

•

Today’s students seek opportunities to directly engage in their own learning and are used to the immediacy of their digital lifestyle.

•

They desire a learning environment which is collaborative and is teamwork focused.

We must prepare our students for the world that is waiting for them.

•

There was a high rate of support expressed for a laptop program in the parent and student responses (over 75%) from the survey earlier in the year.

Will enhance the learning opportunities and outcomes for the girls.

Offers a significant cost saving – laptop/PC Tablet, software (+ updates), accidental damage warranty in addition to regular warranty, support and service, training.

•

Provides educational equity for ALL students since they will have the same equipment and software available to them at school AND at home.

Sports Department News NAB Hockey – Loreto College V’s All Hallows School The next game in the competition will be held on Thursday, 25th August at the State Hockey Center commencing at 4pm. We welcome Meghan Williams-Dell to the team as Goalie to replace Lauren Williams due to injury. Not sure if having “Williams” in your surname is a prerequisite for Hockey Goalie? A win next week will mean Loreto College will be the Division 7 finalist for 2011 and go on to play Division 8 finalist St Mary’s Ipswich for a berth in the final round. The competition is getting very close to the end. Hope to see everyone at the SHC to cheer the girls on.

CSGSSA Athletics Carnival On Monday 22nd August, the College hosted the 2011 annual CSGSSA Track and Field Carnival at the QEII Athletic Stadium. A sincere thank you to the staff and students of Loreto College for their hard work and support on the day. The athletics team from Loreto College competed with great determination on the day. Congratulations to Hannah Meecham for her hard work as Athletics Captain for the season.

Several athletes on the day stepped up in place of injured and sick competitors. Overall Loreto was placed 3rd in the percentage trophy and 6th in the Beirne Cup Aggregate points. Our Track Team was 6 th overall as was our Field Team in the competition. One of the highlights of the day was our All Age Relay team placing third with exceptional running from Claudia Miotti, Carla Caputo, Toula Savva and Hannah Meecham.

Project Compassion - Caritas Today, in the Eastern parts and Horn of Africa, the rains, crops and livestock have failed for two seasons and malnourishment is widespread and severe. 12.5 million people are in dire humanitarian need. Conflict and poverty compound the crisis, and the region’s people wait for help as they arrive after long journeys across borders for food, water and much needed health care. It is a desperate situation.

With this information at the forefront of our mind, having experienced the generosity of Queenslanders during Project Compassion and being ever mindful that this is another ask of a community that has given its all and more, Caritas Australia is inviting the Catholic Community to pray for and support the victims of the worst droughts in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and across East Africa in 60 years.
