Volume 10 - 18 October, 2011 Dear Parents and Students As with many people I am sure, this coming Sunday’s Gospel (Matthew 22: 34-40) is a personal favourite. Its instruction to us is radiantly clear. Let us not over complicate what is asked of us, just two things: 



Love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind; and Love your neighbor as yourself.

In recent weeks it has been my privilege and my pleasure to invite my Year 8 Religion class into an exploration of the world of the first Christians. We have thus been discussing the very notion of what it means to be a Christian and to live a Christian life. We decided, however, that it is not an easy thing to do, even though it sounds straight forward enough, as expressed in Matthew 22: 34-40.

None-the-less through prayer and with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we feel supported and nourished in our efforts.

Gracious God, with your help we pray that we might be courageous, knowledgeable, understanding, guiding, wise, faithful and humble in all our ways. As we strive to lead Christian lives we ask that you be with us in the frailties of our humanity. Amen.

LIVE & WIRED FESTIVAL The Live & Wired Festival is this Sunday 23 October 3.00pm to 6.00pm. For those of you who are new to Loreto, like me, I am told that this is an absolute ‘must attend’. This is our students at their musical best. It features the highly acclaimed Jazz Ensemble, Sorelle, Exit Stage Left, Chorale, and other invited curricular bands. Come along to picnic on the Oval and enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon with the fabulous community of friends that are Loreto.

BROADWAY CONCERT This is a big week coming up for students involved in the Broadway concert at Villanova. I am reliably informed that this is shaping up to be an absolutely spectacular event, so please make sure you book your tickets.

LIBRARY HOURS I am pleased to advise that the extended hours trial that was held in third term was well attended and utilized by students. As such, the extended hours will now be adopted permanently. The library will now be open 7.30am to 4.00pm each day.

CONGRATULATIONS  To Eloise Jackson; Hannah Meecham; Georgia Klinakis; and Sarah Novic on their selection in the Metropolitan East Track and Field team to compete in the State Championships to be held in Brisbane later this week (Oct 20-23). We wish them every success. 

To Dr Jane Wright, Head of Science at Loreto Marryatville, on winning the prestigious Prime Minister’s Secondary Science Teachers’ Award. It was my privilege to attend this special event in Canberra last week where excellence in Science and Education was applauded and acknowledged. Because Science and Teaching are two of my passions, I was delighted to be part of an event that celebrates the critical importance of them both.

LORETO HOSTS THE HONOURABLE KEVIN RUDD MP Last Friday evening, Loreto was proud to host the 2011 Basset Oration for the Australian College of Educators (ACE). On this evening, four leading Queensland educators were presented with Fellowship of ACE awards by Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, before he delivered his Oration. He spoke to us about his personal perspectives on global educational needs and offered insight into the aspirations that governments around the world have to improve educational outcomes for all but most especially for the poor, marginalized and dispossessed. As Minister Rudd is our federal member, it was a pleasure to host this event for the College of Educators.

Drama News Creative Arts Week Preparations are already underway for Creative Arts Week Celebrations. The Senior Drama Council are joining forces with the Music and Dance Councils to run the annual ‘30 Seconds of Fame Talent Quest.’ Interested students are encouraged to enter a solo or group act. Acts can be anything ranging from magic, to music and dance, or even a comedic act or skit! Heats will be held starting Wednesday this week 19th October - Friday 21st October. The final will be held at lunch time - Thursday 27th October in MWC. Entry will be by gold coin donation.

Grease Grease Cast Selection and Contracts The entire cast list including leads, general chorus, dance chorus and band members was released at both Loreto and Villanova early last week. We would like to congratulate all of the students who auditioned for parts as the standard and enthusiasm was quite amazing. Many thanks to the hard-working staff at both Colleges who spent many hours listening to auditions and then deliberating together before final selections were able to be made. Many congratulations to those students who were successful in getting a role but of course it is always a difficult process to advise others that they were not successful this time.

All the students in the cast received a contract pack. It is important that this pack be discussed with parents so that all of the responsibilities required from someone participating in this scope of work is clearly understood and a commitment guaranteed. The expectations are clearly outlined and a signed contract is a commitment to fulfil all obligations. In the unlikely event that someone is not living up to the expectations detailed in the contract at any stage, then after a warning that student will be replaced. We have a list of reserves that we are able to call upon but we hope we never have to implement this. Music News Live & Wired – Don’t forget to come to the Live & Wired Music Festival this Sunday from 3pm to 6pm on Deshon Oval. Bring your picnic rugs and chairs and relax with a soft drink, glass of wine or beer as we entertain you with an exciting program of contemporary music. The concert will feature Jazz Ensemble, Sorelle, Chorale, Exit Stage Left and Year 10 Curricular Bands, as well as special guests – the Villanova Irish Ensembles. A snacks will be on sale from the licensed bar and a BBQ will run for the later part of the afternoon. Best of all, entry is completely free! Rehearsal changes Concert Band One: Rehearsal this week will run until 4:30 pm only.

Concert Band Two: Are reminded that you are rehearsing with Concert Band One on Thursday afternoon this week from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Brass Ensemble is also invited to attend this rehearsal.

Audition Forms: Audition Forms are due to be returned to the school BY FRIDAY THIS WEEK. Auditions for all positions will be held between 9 am and 1 pm on Sunday 30 October at the school. Audition times will be posted on the music noticeboard and the intranet on Tuesday 25 October. Please note the following important information: 1) Current members of Senior Choir, Guitar Ensemble One, Guitar Ensemble Two and Chorale need not re-audition but must submit an Audition Form, otherwise it will be assumed that you no longer wish to be a member of the group. 2) Guitar Ensemble Two students who wish to be considered for Guitar Ensemble One will need to audition for this place. 3) Set work for guitarists and bass players is now available from Dr Svoboda. 4) Set work for percussionists will be available later this week. 5) Set work for singers, drummers, guitarists and keyboard players who wish to be considered for Sorelle, Exit Stage Left or Jazz Ensemble will also be available later this week. 6) Auditions for students who wish to be considered for Chorale will be held at a later date to be advised, HOWEVER, you must still indicate your desire to be in Chorale and return your form by this Friday or you will not be considered.

Music Scholarships: Each year, the Music Department offers a number of part-scholarship covering ¼ or ½ of lesson tuition fees to interested and deserving students. Scholarship recipients are kept strictly confidential. These scholarships continue for one year and are dependent upon the recipients regular attendance and demonstrated effort. Students who wish to apply for a scholarship for 2012 should collect an Application Form from the Music Office as soon as possible and return it to the College by Friday 28 October. Late applications will not be considered.

Double Bass Scholarships: Over the past week, senior students demonstrated Double Bass playing to all year 8 classes. In addition to the scholarships listed above, the Music Department will be offering a number of half scholarships for students in Year 8 or 9 who wish to learn double bass. The College will loan selected students an instrument and pay for half of annual lesson fees (remaining $16.25/week to be paid by parents). Lessons would start in the last few weeks of this term and continue through next year under this arrangement. If your daughter is interested in learning Double Bass and participating in school ensembles, please have her collect a Scholarship Application form from the Music Office and return it to the school by Friday 28 October.

Congratulations: To Jazz Ensemble, Sorelle, the String Sextet and Hayman Lui, Helen Svoboda, Emma-Shay Gallenti-Guilfoyle, Annie Macindoe and Caitlin Uittenbosch who have all represented the school with excellence in this past week at the Women In Sport Breakfast, Basset Oration with Kevin Rudd and St Ita’s Catholic Primary School Fete. All these girls were excellent ambassadors for the school at each of these events both in their attitude and behaviour, and in their musicianship. Well done!

MSG Mega-Raffle: Loreto students involved with either Music Tuition or Music Ensembles should today have received a bundle of 10 tickets to sell for the Mega-Raffle. If any student was away or did not get their tickets for any reason, could they please come to the music office to collect them urgently? The Music Support Group provides funding for over $7000 worth of scholarships each year as well as frequently purchasing instruments and equipment for student use (in recent years this has included amp cases, a new baritone sax, new cymbals, a double bass, and a xylophone). These scholarships and purchases benefit ALL students in the Music Program by allowing the department to run ensembles with balanced instrumentation and adequate resources.

However, this is only possible if we raise enough money each year to fund these expenses. The Music Trivia Night and the Mega-Raffle are the Music Support Group's two main fundraising activities each year. Could I please strongly encourage all music families to support this Raffle - if each family involved in the Music Program sells one ten-ticket booklet, we will raise approximately $4000, enabling scholarships to be offered for another year.

U.N. Assembly On Friday 14th of October, Jelena Dmitrovic, Jenna Nash, Helena Carlson, Courtney Judd, Alessandra Kelly and I took part in the Griffith Model United Nations Assembly, held at Villanova College. This unique program, run for the first time by the Griffith electorate, enabled representatives from ten schools within the electorate to gain insight into UN procedures and current issues such as the worsening famine in North Korea and fiscal problems within the UN. To begin with, pairs were assigned a different country whose interests we would represent in debates and proposals for amendments. Jenna and Helena took the position of Japan, Alessandra and Courtney represented Italy, and Jelena and I stood for Israel. A highlight of the day was the presence of the Foreign Minister and member for Griffith Kevin Rudd, who not only chaired the mock assembly but also spoke to us about his time in the UN and several ways in which Australia supports the UN. This was a unique experience that allowed us to utilise our accumulated knowledge of current events, history and humanitarian issues and amalgamate them to deliver solutions to real problems. Thank you to Mr MacAlinden and Mrs Hanson for their time and guidance in the

Results: Round 4 – 12 October Open A were defeated by St James’ College 66 - 38 St James’ were by far the toughest opponents Loreto has faced this season. They had some very talented players for whom Grace Kearney and Briony Logan were given particular assignments and both did a wonderful job. Some long range “bombs” from Jaime Briody and Isabella Mammone kept the team’s confidence up and the finishing under the basket by Christina Sams and Georgia McNae was the best of the season. A very commendable effort by all the girls.

Open B were defeated by San Sisto 38 - 20 While San Sisto were a stronger team, Loreto worked hard to try and earn a victory. All players gave strong performances, with Sarah Pettiford leading the way in attack and Samantha Vickerman outstanding in defence. It was pleasing to note the improvement in game play from last week’s match. Well done, girls!

Intermediate A were defeated by St John Fisher 40 - 29 This was a close match and Loreto started strongly with Olivia Mastry scoring an excellent lay up in the first thirty seconds of the match. St John Fisher were able to gain a small lead through determined efforts on the ball and were able to maintain this lead for the remainder of the match. Taili Beasung was outstanding with very accurate shooting and strong work bringing the ball down the court. Isabelle Mowen, Amber Schmidt and Madeleine Fisher rebounded with great determination and strength. Improvements are apparent each match and Loreto should be pleased with their efforts!

Intermediate B defeated All Hallows 22 - 20 A lucky escape in the end! The 22 to 10 scoreline at the end of three quarter time was an accurate reflection of the match to that point in time. To their credit, All Hallows came home strongly in the final quarter to try and snatch a victory. Emily Taylor had a strong and aggressive game, with several outstanding blocks. Gabrielle Stein also had an excellent match and was not intimidated in attack or defense. A fantastic victory girls, well done!

Talking and pointing in defence, and actually being in front of the player to defend was inconsistent, as was the ability to generally exploit the attacking option in front of the player with the ball. However, it was a very good performance of the basic skills by all players that kept the defence to a nil score line. Improvement in on field performance was noted for Toula Savva,, Bridget Myers and Kate Mullins.

OPEN B: Coach: Mitch Edwards This is a great win that came from an excellent defensive effort. All the skills that were worked at training came to fruition on the field. Well done!

INTERMEDIATE A Coach: Adam Guest A convincing win after 3 weeks without a game. Touchdowns to Coco Beylot (2) Celia Lane (2) Georgia Hillas ( 3)with Zoe-Lee Sperro, Emily Smallhorn and Madi Brown all scoring 1 each. All team members played well to set up these scoring opportunities. Top effort!

INTERMEDIATE B Coach: Eliza Mooney & Ellen Luxton Another great win by Loreto! The girls played an amazing attacking game using the skills they practised at training. Well executed quick dumps and rucking. A super effort from both Anastasia O’Brien and Kira Streten.

JUNIOR A: Coach: David Witt This week saw the girls play a much more structured game. The team worked on prompting the ball down the field with strong rucking and concentrating on minimising mistakes. The girls worked hard in defence and worked as a team with only one lapse in concentration. The whole team played extremely well.

Nab Hockey Finals On Friday, 21st October, the finals for the NAB Cup Hockey commence with four teams in the competition. Preliminary final games start Friday evening followed by two games on Saturday. On Sunday there will be a game in the morning to decide Bronze followed by a second game to decide Silver and Gold. Which final game we play will depend on how many points we earn during the preliminary finals.

Junior Schools Cup Volleyball Over the weekend, members of the Year 8 and Year 9 Volleyball teams represented the College at the Queensland Schools’ Cup Volleyball carnival. It was a wonderful weekend: full of high skill, top team work and close matches. A truly worthwhile experience for all involved.

Special thank you to our coaches, Mrs Jacqui Gold and Mr Zac Voll, for their dedication and knowledge which they shared with the girls over the weekend. Also, thank you to the party of parents who supported us over the three days. The Loreto Spirit was there in force.

Year 8 What a successful weekend! Although we did not win all of our games, the success lay in the development of the team's volleyball game play; the shift from passing any ball over the net to setting it up for a hit. This young team, consisting of Samantha Crawford, Nikki Foley, Georgia Garrett, Kassidy Graham, Julia Logan, Lucy Nielson, Kate O'Sullivan, Matilda Ruffin, Gabryella Sellars, Siobhan Setch, had some electrifying passages of play complete with well-placed spikes, chase downs and accurate passing. From the very first game to coming runners up in their final, the girls are to be congratulated on their excellent sporting behaviour over the duration of the tournament.

Year 9 Congratulations on a great weekend of Volleyball! With three younger Year 8 girls also playing in the team, the girls did extremely well, although the placing does not reflect their true achievement or potential. All girls participated with full commitment and dedication and while there were many stand outs from the entire weekend, each girl managed to improve out of sight in the three day competition. Particular mention must be made of the three Year 8 girls who managed to hold their own against an older opposition. On the whole, the competition was a success and sets all girls up for a much higher level of achievement in their future volleyball aspirations. Well done, girls. The count down is on to Volleyball 2012!

Year 11 Leadership Day The Year 11 Leadership Days were held on 5th - 7th October. Thank you to all the girls for their wonderful input into three very rewarding days. A wide range of activities allowed the girls to get to know themselves and other members of their cohort on a different level in preparation for the selection of leadership positions for 2012. A variety of sessions were conducted by Loreto staff, Lead Youth Development, current Year 12 leaders, the 2010 College Captain, Bianca Zouppas and guest speaker Glen Gerreyn from “OxygenFactory”.

The girls were challenged to think more deeply about their own gifts and talents, the mission of Loreto schools, the dynamics of their group, expectations and how they can contribute to their world in meaningful ways. An opportunity to review the current leadership structure and make suggestions for next year was well-received by all.

Thank you to the staff whose diverse inputs made the days so successful – Cheryl Hamilton, Helen Carty, Annie Diamond, John McKinlay, Nyree Wood, Ben Langford, Therese Begley, Peita Ward, Yuri Hada-Baxter, Chris Cuskelly, Sarah Bunting and Gillian Hibbert. Thank you also to Alison McEneny for catering on the days and John Henderson, Mark Onions and Ljiljana Cokara for their tireless assistance. The Year 11’s this year proved to be a very co-operative group with much enthusiasm, energy, wisdom and insight. We wish them well for the upcoming voting process and for a dynamic and fulfilling 2012.

Chess News Loreto will once again be host to the Queensland Girls' Teams Chess Finals this Friday 21st October. This year we are expecting competitors from The Sunshine coast, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Toowoomba.

Congratulations to Olivia Collins who has been selected into the 2011/12 cast of Ballet Theatre of Queensland. The State’s Premier Youth Ballet Company and the only youth ballet to perform at our State’s premier venue The Playhouse, Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Olivia was one of 130 talented young dancers to be selected into our company of 61 for this year’s season of "Cinderella", 18 - 21 January 2012. Girls ‘Night In - Breast Cancer Fundraiser To show their support for the Breast Cancer Foundation next Monday 24th October senior students would like to extend an invitation to students, Mums, Aunties and Grandmothers to attend a Pizza and Movie evening in the Mary Ward Centre commencing at 6.30pm and concluding at approximately 9.00pm. Our fund-raising also supports the work of the St Vincent de Paul Society and their wonderful work.

We are starting the collection of unisex Christmas presents for the elderly of our local Meals-on-Wheels. Members will wrap and personally deliver these.



A collection box is in the office. A $3 donation also buys a Christmas gift. I love the heart-warming letters and phone calls of appreciation from the work of your daughters with this activity.

Our students have done a great job of supporting mothers and babies and helping to set up a community health team at Atabae in Timor Leste. They had the highest death rate in the world when we began giving assistance some years ago. Funds this year will buy treadle sewing machines ( $125 each) that will make a significant difference to the women in the very poor villages. I congratulate our members on this very worthy part of their program. All members and those who have assisted during 2011, are invited to a Sizzlers Breakup at Carindale on Wednesday 26 October. Two teachers and the Principal will be in attendance from 6.00 to 8.00 pm. Thank you for your generous and muchneeded support.

Loreto School in Lima, Peru My visit to the IBVM school in Lima during my long service leave last term was an unforgettable and moving experience. I made contact with the nuns and a driver picked me up at my hotel. Apparently no taxi or public transport would take me to Jica Marca, the area of the school. We drove to outskirts of Lima. The area was just dirt, hills of dirt and the dust was thick. Brickmaking is the industry. The contrast between their ramshackle huts and our homes is vast. They have no running water or electricity. The families come from other parts of Peru and the area is pretty lawless. Sister Mercedes, from Spain and Sister Winifred, from Ireland, are passionate about making a difference to the lives of the families. Sister Patricia, the Principal, wants the very best for her students. Stepping into the library, with its bright, pictured walls, books and cushions, I could imagine how enticing this bright, clean environment would be for the kids. Pictures of Mary Ward were in many areas, one of the few familiar aspects. Students are given meals too. On our return, we passed the brickworks where students also work, making 1000 bricks over three days, earning $3… if they are paid. The nuns have organised medical and dental services for the families, as well as teaching the parents on the weekend. Their commitment and passion for making a difference is awe-inspiring. I returned here very grateful for my life, but committed to helping those students in another IBVM school.

I am touched by Kerry Tully’s offer to bake 200 cakes for a cake stall to raise money for the school. Thank you so much, Kerry, mother of Sheridan 9W.

Page Page 12 ** Congratulations Murphy Allendorf 2011 Acceleration Rising Star Recipient

ACHPER Women in Sport Breakfast ACHPER QLD, the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation Queensland Branch, staged its 21st Annual Women in Sport Breakfast on Thursday 13 th October at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. A number of selected Loreto students were invited to attend the function. It was a terrific opportunity to hear several influential Queensland female sportspeople share their insights into the choices and challenges that have shaped their lives. Special guests included: MC Kimberley Busteed (Channel 7 presenter and junior Australian swimmer), WNBL player Sarah Graham, Australian Youth Rock Climbing Champion Lucy Stirling, Girls Wimbledon Champion Ashleigh Barty and Olympic swimmer Megan Nay. Congratulations to Loreto student Murphy Allendorf (Year 12) who was chosen as one of the 2011 Acceleration Rising Star Award recipients in the “Highly Commended” category for this award. Murphy is currently away in New Zealand competing in the U19 Qld Schoolgirls’ Hockey tour, therefore Murphy’s mum, Monique, was present to accept the prestigious award on her behalf.

A special mention must go to the Loreto Sextet who were invited to play as the musical entertainment during registration. The girls played and represented the College beautifully and received many compliments throughout the morning.

Queensland Sportswoman of the Year Breakfast The Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Councillor Graham Quirk, and Womensport Qld combined to host the 2011 Queensland Sportswoman of the Year Breakfast. This was held on Friday 14th October at Roy Harvey House. Two senior students (Hannah Williams and Hannah Meecham) were selected to enjoy breakfast and listen to some of Queensland’s most outstanding female athletes tell their stories of challenge and triumph in life as an elite athlete. Some of those stories were told by Natalie Cooke (Olympic Beach Volleyball Player) and Emma Jackson (Australian Triathlete). It was a great opportunity and experience for the girls.

South East Brisbane Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Meeting with Lord Mayor Graham Quirk On Tuesday 4th October Mrs Hamilton, Ms Jones, Mr Williams and Ms Beach were accompanied by Year 11 accounting students Kirsty Wrice, Elizabeth Kehoe and Leah Paterdis to the South East Brisbane Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Meeting held at The Colmslie Hotel. The group had the privilege of listening to Brisbane Lord Mayor, Councillor Graham Quirk address local business owners and corporate guests. Councillor Quirk spoke to guests about getting Brisbane back to business and incorporating the Lord Mayor’s vision for the future of Brisbane. The students also had an opportunity to network and build relationships with community members and local business owners from companies such as 4BC, Variety Children’s Charity, The Navy, Westpac, ANZ, local members of parliament and numerous accounting firms. We look forward to inviting more students to future Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Meetings.
