In this time of great change, Loreto College has sought to uphold traditions dear to our current and past families. It is with great joy that we returned to a more routine second term where we reimplemented several College traditions. With school closures, restrictions put in place due to the pandemic and then the floods, our College community demonstrated their agility and resilience in response to an ever-changing context.

I was most grateful that we were able to re-imagine our International Women’s Day Mother-Daughter breakfast. With over 500 people in attendance, I was delighted to announce the successful recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award, Louise Young (2005). While Louise was unable to attend in person, she recorded a message to our families where she expressed appreciation for her Loreto education.

We are looking forward to Louise visiting the College later in the year and to future events where we hope to invite not only current families but also past pupils and past mothers. I encourage Loreto past pupils to nominate for the Outstanding Alumnus, to be announced at our Ceremony of Excellence, later in the year.

The College has also benefited from the wisdom and experience of our past pupils through our first Loreto Industry Network Connect (LINC) breakfast for 2022. These events help connect our current senior students with past pupils undertaking tertiary study and those whose careers are now well-established. These important connections allow our students to gain a better picture of potential career options. The tenacity, optimism and adaptability of each speaker shone through.

The morning was an uplifting experience and we thank all past pupils who contributed to this event.

I offer my sincere thanks to the Loreto Past Pupils Association (LPPA) committee who have worked so hard to support the LPPA including Catherine Michael, Susan Nelles, Michelle Rovere and Virginia Morgan.

I also extend a very warm welcome to the new Committee members elected at the AGM in July.

We returned to the tradition of celebrating 50 years since graduation with the Classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 at our semester two Mass on July 19. This day also marked Landing Day, the anniversary of Mother Gonzaga Barry’s arrival in Australia in 1875. All past pupils who left Loreto prior to 1972 were very welcome to attend Mass and gather for lunch afterwards, sharing memories of their schooling and renewing old friendships.

One much-valued tradition at Loreto College is our Mission Day, and we were pleased to welcome back many past pupils to the College who came to watch the jazz and choir competitions. We congratulate all students who participated, the senior students who led each group and the winning houses – Ward (Jazz) and Mulhall (Choir) for their stellar performances. The value that Loreto College Coorparoo places on justice was evident with many student-led fund-raising activities.

Several teachers braved the cold, volunteering for the ‘dunk tank,’ to the delight of our students. Together, our efforts raised almost $12,000 for Mary Ward International Australia and their project to support the provision of solar lighting for disaster-impacted areas in West Bengal, India.

In a year of such great change, the value of traditions such as Mission Day, where our students have the opportunity to commit to a common good as a whole community are well-worth upholding.

Welcome from the new Executive and Committee of the Loreto Past Pupils Association (LPPA).

We hope you enjoy feeling connected to the College through this modern Circle of Friends. You may marvel how much Loreto College may have changed externally but still retains the sense of trust and Mercy that the Sisters and Staff instilled since those first tentative steps of 1928.

The virtue for all Loreto Schools around Australia this year is Freedom, that sense “of referring all to God” that so inspired Mary Ward and her followers during the harshest of struggles, physically, politically and religiously within the Catholic Church.

This year, the students’ motto, ‘Free to be you, Loreto 22’, emphasises kindness in word and manner, a large-minded and critical appraisal of facts before judging and a demeanour of creativity and joy.

Farewell TO THE CLASS OF 2021 With a cheerful spirit, let’s ignite joy in the hearts of others

The Class of 2021 fully embraced the virtue of felicity and their motto ‘with a cheerful spirit, let’s ignite joy in the hearts of others’. Their passion, spirit and generosity shown throughout 2021 as student leaders of the College is to be admired.

On Friday 19 November 2021, we held a final Liturgy at the College followed by the Valedictory Dinner at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Valedictory dinner introduced in 2018, is now a wonderful Loreto tradition where graduating students are presented with their Loreto ring. This event is a time for students and their families to celebrate and reflect on their Loreto journey and an opportunity for a final farewell.

A special highlight of the night was Amelia Coorey (current Year 11 student) singing a beautiful rendition of The Climb accompanied by Principal, Mrs Kim Wickham on the piano.

The Honours Assembly held in early February this year saw us acknowledge the outstanding achievements of the Class of 2021. The Mother Roasaria Award for College Duces was presented to Charlotte Ferrett and Trinity Murfett and the Proxime Accessit awarded to Andrea Brouwers.

Congratulations goes to each and every student on their individual achievements. We wish them all the very best as they commence their next journey. Many have moved onto tertiary and further studies; some are taking a gap year and others have commenced work.

It has been lovely to see some familiar faces back on campus this year tutoring and mentoring current students and it was fabulous to have six graduates attend the Loreto Industry Networking Connect (LINC) breakfast in May. See page 18 for more information on this great community event.

to the Welcome CLASS OF 2027!

Following a two week delay to the start of the school due to the predicted peak in COVID-19 cases, we finally welcomed 164 Year 7 students through the gates on Monday 7 February 2022. This year, we had students join our Circle of Friends from 39 different primary schools and we welcomed 20 daughters of past pupils.

Year 7 is a year of adaption, growth, learning and of course, lots of adventures.

The Friendship and Personal Development Camp held at Tallebudgera in Term 2 is such an important opportunity for the students to develop friendships, get to know their homeroom teachers and key staff and challenge themselves through a variety of activities. With endless amounts of energy, enthusiasm, spirit and laughter, students embraced every opportunity and demonstrated resilience and compassion.

Mission Day, a highlight of the year for all students, was held on the last day of Term 2. The Year 7s participated in the House Choir competition, enjoyed the cent auction, tombola, lob-a-choc and many other activities. This long-standing tradition is an important fundraising event and a much-loved day on the College calendar.

As we head into Semester 2, the class of 2027 are all starting to look very settled, have become more independent and are embracing the many different opportunities that life at Loreto brings.

It won’t be long before we are welcoming the Class of 2028 through the gates for orientation in September and October as they begin to prepare for their Loreto journey.

2022 OUTSTANDING Young Alumnus LOUISE YOUNG (2005) We congratulate the Outstanding Young Alumnus for 2022, Louise Young (2005), announced at the Mother Daughter Breakfast. Louise has identified three themes which have guided and inspired her early career: her love of sport; her passion for new cultures; and her commitment to lifelong learning.

When at Loreto College Coorparoo, Louise was a dedicated German language student who is still close friends with girls she studied with and travelled to Bad Homburg with, as part of the inaugural Loreto German exchange trip. She was (and remains) a keen sportswoman, having participated in many of the sports offered by the College. She now lives by the mantra that “one will never regret money or time spent on travel or education.”

Following her graduation from Loreto in 2005, Louise commenced a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Queensland majoring in psychology and philosophy. After a year, she transferred her tertiary studies to QUT, where she began a degree in law. After being awarded a UMAP scholarship, our Young Alumnus seized an opportunity to combine travel with her law course work and undertook a semester abroad at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada.

Not only did she graduate from her law degree with first-class Honours, she also completed her Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours.

Louise began her legal career in 2011 with the international law firm, Ashurst, where she grew her expertise in construction and commercial litigation.

One career highlight was her involvement in a matter successfully defended on appeal to the High Court of Australia, an opportunity that few lawyers experience in a lifetime of legal practice. While undertaking a Master of Construction Law at Melbourne University, she was promoted to Senior Associate at Ashurst.

In early 2016, Louise Young was presented a unique opportunity to combine legal practice with her interest in sport. She joined the inhouse legal team seconded to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee. This experience opened her eyes to the range of opportunities available through major sporting events across the globe.

Consequently, since mid-2018, our Outstanding Young Alumnus 2022 has called London home, where she practices as Senior Legal Counsel for Formula 1 Racing. After 10 years of legal practice, the Young Alumnus now shares her expertise by mentoring junior lawyers in her office and has also given back to the community by volunteering at pro bono legal clinics while working in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. She has contributed to the profession through authorship of various articles published with journals such as the Building and Construction Law Journal and for the Queensland Law Society.

The Young Alumnus has won awards both as an individual and as part of a team including the Young In-House Lawyer of the Year at the 2017 Australasian Law Awards.

2021 OUTSTANDING Alumni

DR PATRICIA YATES (1978) Dr Patricia Yates completed both her primary and secondary schooling at Loreto Coorparoo, graduating in 1978. Following school, she undertook study to become a registered nurse at Princess Alexandra Hospital. This was followed by midwifery qualifications through the Mater Mothers in the 1980s.

After several years working as a clinical nurse, she began her career as a nurse educator at the Holy Spirit Hospital. Later, this career transitioned into lecturing at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Patricia is a lifelong learner, having also completed her Bachelor of Arts, a Masters’ Degree in Social Science and a PhD through the University of Queensland.

In her PhD, she explored the use of alternative therapies for cancer patients. Now a distinguished Professor, Patricia is a Member of the Order of Australia. She leads the Faculty of Health at QUT as Executive Dean. Her experience as a registered nurse and leader in health education and research in the health sector led to this appointment, and was preceded by her appointment as Professor and Head of the School of Nursing at QUT. Patricia is also a Co-Director for QUT’s Centre for Healthcare Transformation. She leads a large competitively-funded research program focused on developing workforce capacity in cancer, palliative and aged care, advancing the management of cancer-related symptoms and treatment side effects, and strengthening the nexus between research, policy and practice in cancer, palliative and aged care.

Patricia holds visiting appointments as Lead Researcher for the Cancer Nursing Professional Precinct at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Director for Queensland Health’s Centre for Palliative Care Research and Education, and Visiting Fellow at Princess Alexandra Hospital. She is also a Senior Fellow of the Centre for Health Outcomes and Policy Research, University of Pennsylvania.

Patricia’s contribution to our society occurs at many levels. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and the Australian College of Nursing. She was inducted into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame of Sigma Theta Tau International Honour Society of Nursing and was awarded the prestigious USA Oncology Nursing Society Distinguished Researcher Award in 2018. Patricia also received a Citation from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning.

Patricia further serves the community through her leadership as President of the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care and is a former President of Palliative Care Australia.

Jacqui is an Australian nutritionist and food consultant working in the health, wellness and hospitality industry. Known for her pseudonym, Miss Bliss – a name that can be dated back to 2015 when she created her first food product, bliss balls.

After completing her degree at QUT in Health Science (Nutrition), and following the success of her food product, she took the plunge and opened her own wholefoods cafe, Miss Bliss.

Ann is a Brisbane-based publishing expert. She is the founder of Dettori Publishing, a central hub for three businesses – Post Pre-press, Independent Ink and Indie Experts – which offer a range of services to publishers, businesses and authors. Through these companies, Ann has helped develop, produce, and bring to life thousands of documents and books, many of which have gone on to become best sellers.

Clarissa is an award-winning public relations consultant with more than 20 years’ experience in strategic change and communication roles. She has been a senior advisor to federal and state ministers and has worked with some of Australia’s largest publicly listed companies and government departments. Currently, she’s working with Queensland Rail leading the change and communication program to support the integration of the Cross River Rail project. Before this role, Clarissa was a Group Executive Director in Queensland’s largest public relations consultancy, managing several teams of consultants and all corporate and government clients. She’s worked with Star Entertainment Group, Super Retail Group, the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Queensland Treasury, Transurban, Brisbane Airport, Royal Australian Navy, Department of Defence, Brisbane City Council, Terry White Group, Chanel and global mining companies. Clarissa completed a Bachelor of Business at QUT and Economics at UQ. She has been a lecturer, tutor and career mentor at QUT throughout her career.

In 2020, she sold her cafe and opened her consulting agency working with brands and businesses across Australia in the hospitality and health space. Jacqui is passionate about helping others create a healthy and wholesome relationship with food. She can be found most days developing recipes in her kitchen.

A lot of Jacqui’s passion for food and creativity was fostered in her favourite class at Loreto, Home Economics, with Mrs Meecham, which she feels played a big role in her success today.

Ann is also the author of The Entrepreneurs’ Guide to Self-Publishing. In this book, she shares wisdom developed across many years of professional experience to inspire and guide authors who are embarking on their exciting self-publishing journey.

Ann has always been passionate about books, reading and storytelling – as her former school teachers would attest! She loves that her career centres around helping people share their unique stories with the world.

After graduating, Ann travelled and explored the world and spent a number of years working in advertising in London before returning to Australia and entering the publishing industry.

Ann has three adult daughters, a son in year 12 and two fur babies.

NICOLE DYSON (2000)

Nicole is a globally-recognised expert and practitioner in project-based learning and youth entrepreneurship. She is the founder of Future Anything, an award-winning, curriculum-aligned entrepreneurship program for high school students, the founder of YouthX, Australia’s only startup accelerator program for school-aged entrepreneurs, and the founder of Catapult Cards, a design thinking tool for corporates and classrooms.

Monica was a boarder at Loreto from 1959-1963.

She is an Honorary Associate in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Sydney and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, London.

She received her B.A. in Ancient History and Anthropology from the University of Queensland, her PhD in Classical Archaeology at The University of Sydney. Her particular area of research is focused upon the techniques and chronology of ancient Hellenistic gold jewellery as archaeological evidence. Her PhD dissertation Hellenistic Gold Eros Jewellery: Technique, Style and Chronology was published by British Archaeological Reports in 2006 and digitised in 2021. It is considered authoritative work in this area.

Jenny Moon is a highly regarded choral conductor specialising in children and youth choirs. A graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Jenny is a passionate educator and advocate for choral music and is a highly sought-after conductor, choral workshop presenter and adjudicator.

Future Anything was the winner of the Xero Outstanding Micro-Business Award at the 2021 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards and listed as one of only ten initiatives around the globe realising the employment and entrepreneurship ambitions of young people in the Prince’s Trust Group’s Report (2021) on The Future of Work.

Nicole has represented Australia as a delegate for the G20 Young Entrepreneur’s Alliance, held in Argentina in 2018, a finalist in the 2019 Business News Australia ‘Young Entrepreneur Awards’ and a finalist in the Pro Bono Australia’s Impact 25 of 2022.

An engaging and skilled facilitator, MC, keynote speaker, and panellist, Nicole is a regular contributor at education and innovation conferences alike.

As a teacher in the USA, UK, and Australia as well as a Head of Department and Head of Year at some of Queensland’s top-performing public schools, Nicole has repeatedly led the design and implementation of whole-school changes to support future ready learning; placing young people at the forefront of codesigning contextually relevant learning experiences. Nicole passionately pushes the boundaries around the future of our education system, and believes the best education empowers young people to bend the future, one youth-led idea at a time.

The spark that fired Monica’s imagination to become an archaeologist was during her second last year at Loreto College Coorparoo, where she had the good fortune to study Ancient History with Sister de Montfort (Denise Desmarchelier) who took a particular interest in her progress. Sister de Montfort was a dedicated and inspirational teacher who brought the heroes of the ancient world, such as Alexander the Great and Hannibal vividly to life.

Monica gained an ‘A’ grade for Ancient History in the matriculation exams of 1963.

In Sydney during the 1990s, Monica participated in excavations conducted by Professor Alexander Cambitoglou at the University of Sydney’s archaeological excavations at Torone in Chalcidice, Greece. In recent years, she has presented papers on international cruises and at prestigious venues both in Australia and overseas. Topics include jewellery and the luxury arts, issues concerning cultural heritage, as well as ancient Greek and Near Eastern art, history, and religion. Her research has necessitated extensive travels through South Italy, Turkey, the Republic of Georgia and Bulgaria.

Her most recent publication is a monograph of the Hellenistic gold jewellery in the Benaki Museum Athens, where it was launched in 2017.

This was followed by a second launch at Maclaurin Hall, University of Sydney. Her current project is a monograph and catalogue of the Stathatos Collection of Hellenistic gold jewellery at the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.

She is currently the Associate Artistic Director of the Voices of Birralee conducting their signature treble choir, the Brisbane Birralee Voices (BBV), and co-conducting Birralee Kids. Until very recently, she was the Head of Choral and Vocal Studies at Hillcrest Christian College, an acclaimed choral program encompassing twelve college choirs including four Choirs of Excellence. During her tenure with both organisations, Jenny led international tours and achieved awards at international choral competitions including 2 Gold Medals for BBV at the Internationale Concorso Chorale Competition in addition to numerous national awards.

Jenny is a regular guest conductor for Queensland Conservatorium Choral State Honours Programs, and has also conducted for the Gondwana National Choral School and various choral festivals across Australia.

She has also presented regularly at workshops and professional development programs.

Jenny has a passion for promoting Australian music to choirs and communities and regularly commissions choral works from Australian composers.

Jenny has so many great memories of Loreto: Mission Days; Conduct cards always in the side pocket; travelling to Sydney in Year 8 to be part of a music camp with Loreto girls from all over Australia; and she remembers celebrating the announcement of the new Year 12 leaders with a massive lunchtime waterfight and a subsequent suspension for the afternoon where she went across the road and ate fish and chips at the shop with other students.

REBEKKAH MARKEY-TOWLER (2010)

BRIANNA ANSALDO (CARPENTER 2003)

After graduating from Loreto in 2010, Rebekkah studied a Bachelor of Arts/ Law (majoring in International Relations and Political Science) and completed an Honours thesis in International Relations at the University of Queensland. While studying, she worked at the Supreme Court Library of Queensland and also as a research assistant for a number of academics.

Sophia’s favourite moments at Loreto were spent at the sewing machine under the mentorship of Mrs Fiona Meecham. These teachings sparked the beginning of her passion for the creative arts where she now continues her journey.

With a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Production from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and over 15 years of experience working in the audio industry, Brianna has always had an affinity for storytelling.

Sophia is an aspiring theatrical costume designer who is currently studying a Bachelor of Design at the Queensland College of Art in Brisbane.

Her costuming credits include multiple theatre productions, including Guys and Dolls, Footloose, Mary Poppins, Les Misérables, Grease and 42nd Street, and just recently Disney’s Frozen at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).

She has also assisted with costuming for the Conservatorium’s recent Opera productions including Béatrice et Bénédict in 2020, the 2021 Val Machin Scenes (Marriage of Figaro, Carmen and The Magic Flute), and Street Scene.

Also an accomplished singer, Brianna was a finalist on Australia Idol in 2007.

Rebekkah then decided to do something completely different and spent a year teaching English in Japan as part of the JET Programme (despite not speaking Japanese) before unexpectedly being offered a job as the Executive Associate to a Federal Court judge in Melbourne for 18 months.

While working at the Federal Court, she completed her Practical Legal Training and developed an interest in and love for environmental law, particularly climate change law. As such, from the beginning of 2020 (and through all the long lockdowns!)

Rebekkah started working as a research assistant at the Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne, particularly on climate law projects.

In 2021, Rebekkah was offered a job as a Research Fellow with Melbourne Climate Futures, a new initiative at the University of Melbourne. Throughout the year, she did a few other bits and pieces – casual research work on Domestic and Family Violence and worked as a College tutor at Newman’s and St Mary’s College. Rebekkah also enjoys long distance running and swimming.

Sophia’s passion for musical theatre began at a very early age, as she comes from a musical family.

In her Bachelor of Design studies, she has been recognised for her dedication as a member of the Griffith Honours College and the Golden Key International Honours Society.

As an emerging costume designer, Sophia hopes to create a world in which costume design can help create magic, assisting the performers on stage to reach their full potential.

As a composer, Brianna’s work has been featured on television shows internationally on NBC, CTV and Foxtel and in online advertising campaigns (Adidas). She has had the pleasure of recording in some of Australia’s award-winning studios such as Studios 301 (Sydney) and Rockinghorse (Byron Bay).

After over a decade working exclusively as a songwriter, Brianna was looking for her next challenge and fell in love with podcast production.

Brianna has now grown her own podcast and video production agency, Bamby Media, with a current roster of over 60 clients globally.

Brianna remembers spending many lunchtimes singing in the chorale and choir which she absolutely loved. She was also a member of the guitar ensemble and played hockey, volleyball, water polo and was a member of the swimming team. Working in a team was a huge part of what Brianna loved about her time at Loreto and has helped her tremendously. She fosters that environment in her company today.

Jessica is based on the Gold Coast and currently working as a Clinical Specialist in Cardiac Rhythm Management for healthcare technology solution company, Medtronic. Since graduating from Loreto, she completed a Bachelors Degree in Exercise and Sport Science at UQ, with a focus in cardiac science. Previously working as a Cardiac Scientist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and The Prince Charles Hospital, Jessica loved creating connections with patients and supporting life-transforming technology on a daily basis.

Lauren is in her final year of a dual degree in Law (Honours) and Business (majoring in International Business) at QUT.

Samantha is a Biomedical Engineer at Greenslopes and St Andrew’s Ipswich Private Hospital (Ramsay Healthcare) completing maintenance and repair of medical equipment throughout the hospitals from general wards to theatre equipment.

These days, she spends most of her time in Electrophysiology labs, assisting physicians with implants of pacemakers and internal defibrillators. The most rewarding part of her job is the positive clinical and personal outcomes she sees every day.

In her spare time, Jess teaches Pilates, and loves hanging out at the beach with her husband and fur baby.

Lauren decided to embark on a career in law after lots of experience debating and public speaking and enjoying English and English Extension. Her 5 years at University have been filled with experiences across Australia and the world, and she has spent a few late nights in the law library working through complex legal problems.

Lauren has embraced University and in 2021 was President of one of QUT’s biggest clubs, QUT Women in Business. She was selected as a TEDx Speaker in 2021, talking about the value of community and is extremely proud of this achievement.

She has worked part-time at a law firm and still enjoys getting dinner with her Loreto friends and playing netball every week. Lauren is the daughter of Catherine Michael, former President of the Loreto Past Pupils’ Association.

At the end of last year, she completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) majoring in medical and with minors in mechanical and biotechnology.

Throughout her degree, she has gained industry experience across the board including technical engineering with Ramsay Healthcare, rehabilitation engineering at the Queensland Children’s Hospital and thesis research for medical manufacturing company, Cook Medical.

Sam’s favourite memories include Mission Day, co-curricular music and sport, and being a member of the Media Council.

1972 saw the introduction of the Media Group. “We felt that it was essential for each student to gain knowledge of current events and form an opinion. Weekly news broadcasts over the PA proved to be one of the best ways to ensure everyone was in touch with the news. There was also a weekly student bulletin posted in the library and TV guides to current event programs in the classrooms of older classes.”

Mr Grice and the Loreto Special Choir Mr Alfred Arnold Grice (1904 – 1981) was Musical Director and Conductor of the Choir and Vocal Studies 1946 – 1970. He showed unfailing and loyal interest in the school.

He was a professional musician, a pianist and organist, taught piano and singing, and was an orchestral and choral conductor. He was an Adjudicator, from Cairns to Melbourne, for 51 years.

At Loreto in the late 1940s, a Special Choir was active and sang in the First Schoolgirls’ National Broadcast. In 1964, Mother Gregory, who had been in the first choir, enthusiastically introduced it again with the help of Mr Grice.

With confidence growing, the Choir took part in a new venture for Brisbane in 1966 – a Secondary School Music Festival. Thirty-nine schools, state and private, formed a 600 voice choir and 90-piece orchestra. Miss Smallwood and Mother Geraldine also supported the Choir.

A family tradition

When we arrived back in Australia in 2018, we quickly discovered we had to make a decision about where our twin girls would go to high school. It seemed bizarre that while caught up in the practicalities of finding our bearings in a new city, we also had to make a decision that would help shape the kind of women our girls would grow up to be.

After a great deal of avoidance, I did what any sensible person would do and phoned a friend, that friend being my aunt, who said terribly sensible and reassuring things but ended with, “you know I am still best friends with the girls I met on my first day at Loreto and that was 50 years ago!” It gave me pause, for in fact, my oldest and dearest friends are also Loreto women. Their support and friendship has been vital to me over the years, and on reflection, I wanted my daughters to experience that too.

On our first visit to Loreto Coorparoo, one of the girls introduced herself as: “the third generation to attend Loreto, as it was a family tradition”, and although I was not previously aware we were a family of traditions, we had started at least one.

In 1962, my mother Bronwyn began Grade 3 at Loreto Normanhurst with her sister, Margaret, two years behind in Grade 1. They both speak fondly of the school and it’s beautiful grounds, reminiscent of a country school. At the time, Normanhurst was primarily a Boarding School and my mother and her sister were ‘Day Bugs’ yet Margaret remembers that right away, she felt like she belonged. In 1969, their younger sister, Jacqueline, was not yet 5 years old when, with an oversized uniform and squeaky Globite school case, she joined them. By the time I was ready to start, primary school was no longer on offer so I began in 1989 as a Year 7 student.

you know I am still best friends with the girls I met on my first day at Loreto and that was 50 years ago!

A tradition had started to form. I remember my mother showing me around the school grounds, pointing out special places where she had grown up, learned sports, made friends, and become engaged in a meaningful education.

Looking back, it was an education that was well rounded: there was Latin, which has proved invaluable; French with Madame Lapin, who was elegance personified; Religion with Sister Jeanine who allowed us to explore, question and grow; and Mrs Starr who was equal parts genius and eccentric. I recall the annual musical festivals, debating, school dances and the obligatory sporting endeavours. But most of all were the women, the girls, who were part of my life and who in so many ways shaped me and taught me. The laughter, the conversation, the lunchtime routines and the challenges of the teenage years all made those friendships so important to me.

Mary Ward’s modest declaration that ‘women in time will do much’ still resonates in the education offered by Loreto schools in the 20th and 21st centuries. My mother and her sisters are amazing, strong, determined women who were taught they could be whoever they wanted to be. The first two, as of their time, entered traditional female fields, and built important careers where they made a difference through educating the future generations. My youngest aunt, an exceptional writer, has travelled the world and continues to learn, grow and develop her career.

The tradition of my family is education and we have all been blessed with a Loreto education. So despite myself, we are a family of tradition and next year my twin girls will walk through the gates of Loreto Coorparoo. It is very much my dream that these women in time will do much.

Connecting our COMMUNITY JUMP IN…

and the winner is the old girls!

On Friday 21 October 2021, an energetic group of past pupils from the Class of 1994 hit the pool for the JUMP IN fundraiser to help support Christine K (1994) rebuild her life after suffering a brain aneurysm.

Two junior teams played a match on the night but the highlight of the event was the Loreto Senior 2021 vs Loreto Past Pupils match. The senior team led for the majority of the game against the Past Pupils, made up of players in current and past Australian junior teams, including past Olympians. In the final minute of the last quarter, the Past Pupils used their experience to win by one goal. The atmosphere was electric and with a crowd of 230 people was a wonderful display of true Loreto spirit.

A very big thank you to the past pupils, parents of the water polo program, players, students and families, Loreto Sports Support group and sponsors for your support and contribution to this event. Together we raised over $5,000.

Mother Daughter Breakfast Due to the ongoing pandemic, we were unable to proceed with our International Women’s Day Breakfast in March, however, we were delighted to host the Mother Daughter Breakfast in May at the Greek Club with over 500 guests in attendance.

To match the theme of International Women’s Day, #breakthebias, guest speakers Alison Sandy (1995) Channel Seven Freedom of Information Editor, and Krista Adams (1986) Deputy Mayor, shared their memories of Loreto, where their careers have taken them, how other women support them in their challenging roles and what strong positive female leadership looks like to them.

Louise Young (2005) was announced as the winner of the 2022 Outstanding Young Alumnus Award.

LINC Breakfast Loreto Industry Network Connect (LINC) was launched in 2021 with a focus on providing students in Years 11 and 12 the opportunity to network and connect with past pupils working in a variety of different career fields.

At this year’s breakfast event, guest speakers included past pupils Fiona Cochran (1985), Kate Oliver (2009), Lauren Michael (2016), Brianna Ansaldo (2003), Samantha Nguyen (2017), Alison Sandy (1994), Emma Luck (2005) and Kristyn Stuckey (2010). These inspirational ladies work in a variety of fields including Business, STEM, Law, Engineering, Humanities, Health and PE and Journalism. Their key message to our students was to reach out to networks and ask for support.

It was wonderful to also welcome back 2021 graduates, Tara Lynam and Victoria Hazidavis, and 2020 graduates Bridie Webber, Isla Jenkins, Anastasia Papadimitriou, Amelia Grob and Grace Stoneley.

We look forward to hosting our next LINC event in August 2022.

Senior Past Pupils’ 50+ Reunion It was lovely to welcome back past pupils from 1970, 1971 and 1972 as well as those who graduated prior to this, to celebrate the 50+ Senior Past Pupil Reunion.

The morning commenced with a whole school Mass which included a blessing of the Senior Past Pupil badges before they were presented to guests by Year 12 student representatives.

Mass was followed by a high tea, the singing of the Holiday Hymn accompanied by Principal, Mrs Kim Wickham on the piano and finished with a tour of the College.

The Mass seemed more special than usual and the choir delightful to sing with. Not having been on a tour of the school for many years, I was delighted with it.

What wonderful opportunities the students have these days. It brought back many memories for me. It was and still is a wonderful school in so many ways.

Shout out to...

GRACE KING (2018) I had the wonderful experience of attending Grace King’s final performance at the Conservatorium in November last year where she has been studying since graduating in 2018. Grace played four pieces for her assessment and all were spectacularly well executed.

She received a standing ovation at the end of her session and I must say, to my untrained ear, her performance outshone the others significantly! Grace has commenced the Honours Program and continues teaching. She plays at various venues around the city and regularly at the Eat Street markets.

MATILDA (TILLY) INGRAM (2016) Congratulations to Tilly on being awarded the “University Medal” from the University of Queensland.

University Medals are awarded to a select few UQ graduates who achieve outstanding academic results for the duration of their program that go above and beyond the requirements of their degree. In accepting her Medal Tilly said “It was an absolute honour to be awarded the “University Medal”. I feel very blessed to have been given the opportunities I have to reach this point”.

JEANE GRANT-NUTT (1945) A big shout out to Jeane in California, USA. Jeane, now aged 93, has very fond memories of her days at Loreto and particularly Sr Marion who took great care of her. She married US Navy officer, Charles Nutt as a war bride at the young age of 17 and subsequently moved to Los Angeles. They raised four children and were surrounded with friends from the daughters of the British Empire. Most were Aussies and best friends throughout the years. Jeane is very proud of her Australian heritage and her favourite song is Waltzing Matilda.

LUCY KREUTZER (2021) Lucy graduated from basic training in the Navy at HMAS Cerberus in April. The 11 week program was pushed into 9 weeks due to COVID-19 lockdowns and included fitness, team work, singular pursuits, weapons , written tests plus very cold weather on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. A total of 120 recruits started the program and 93 graduated.

PEITA WARD (current staff member) Congratulations to Peita Ward (current staff member) and Di McGowan (former staff member) on their graduation in April 2022 from their Masters’ in Educational Leadership at the Australian Catholic University (ACU). LUCY NIELSON (2015) Lucy works as the Senior Programs and Events Coordinator for the Department of Education. She was the Project Manager for both Creative Generation – State Schools Onstage (CGEN) and Creative Generation – Instrumental Fanfare held in July 2022. With a cast of over 1500, CGEN is nationally renowned for its outstanding and vibrant display of state school talent. Lucy completed a Master of Arts and Cultural Management at the University of Melbourne in 2020-2021 graduating with First Class Honours and holds a Bachelor of Music (Distinction).

GEORGIA AND MELANIE KLINAKIS (2014) In November 2020, twin sisters Georgia and Melanie launched their dessert business, Baked by M&G in memory of their Yiayia (grandmother). Approximately 18 months on, we are very excited to announce that the girls have just moved into their very own kitchen and are open every Saturday (7am – 12pm) for their M&G Market Day! Their shop is located at 24 Carrara St, Mount Gravatt East. During the week, they offer pick up and delivery for orders placed through their online store – bakedbymg.com.au.

SR HELEN PARER IBVM (1960) Sr Helen Parer ibvm celebrated two very special occasions earlier this year; her 80th birthday and her Diamond Jubliee (60 years) as a religious.

Sr Helen celebrated both these special occasions with family and friends at the College.

Sr Helen is a Loreto Coorparoo past pupil and has given her life to service, particularly working with Indigenous communities in Central Australia. She is now the Community Leader for the seven remaining sisters in Queensland (four in Brisbane and three on the Gold Coast).
