Principal’s Message Dear Parents and Students I congratulate this year‟s College Captains, Sarah Pettiford and Nina Waddell, on the fine opening address they delivered on “Freedom” at last week‟s Inaugural College Mass. Nina and Sarah reminded us that: “Mary Ward’s virtue of freedom delves into the sense of one’s inner freedom – the freedom to love and be loved, to voice your beliefs, to remain optimistic when faced with adversity, to serve others with an open and trusting heart, and importantly, to be content and at peace with your inner self”. “It is easy to become weighed down with negativity, fear and apprehension, but a conscious reminder of faith can alleviate these crippling emotions and allow us to continue on a journey of freedom. A choice to access God’s loving care can release an inner freedom that helps us reach our full intellectual, emotional and spiritual potential”. They drew on the inspiration of Nelson Mandela reminding us that “he understood that freedom and love are intimately related and that exercising your own freedom is about liberating yourself and others from fear, while remaining optimistic on your journey through life”. The final advice our Captains gave each girl was to “look within yourself and do not be afraid to rely on others to help you persevere. Challenge yourself to make the most of every aspect of the year whilst having courage to put yourself out there, having the hope to believe in yourself and pursue your dreams, and having the inner freedom to be optimistic and your true self”. My fervent hope and prayer is that each girl might heed this sage advice with an open heart and an open mind such that she might “be all that she can be” for herself, for others, for the world and for our God. Amen.

To the music students and staff on another very successful Music Camp. This camp is a crucial component of the comprehensive musical program at Loreto and I wish to thank students, staff and parents for their continued commitment, enthusiasm and energy given to this important extra-curricular enterprise. Likewise, I wish to commend to you the wonderful efforts of all those currently involved in the preparation of our Musical. Rehearsals are well underway and going extremely well. Congratulations and thanks to all. Nurturing and fostering talent and creativity are very important aspects of an education in the Mary Ward tradition, so it is delightful to see the students being so involved in and enjoying these ventures.

UQ Senior Student Conference Teachers and senior students are invited to attend this exciting one-day conference at the St Lucia campus on this contemporary and controversial topic. The conference, Boats, Camps and Barbed Wire Fences - Forced Migration and the Law, will be an interactive exploration of complex contemporary human rights challenges facing the global community, focusing on armed conflict, displaced persons and refugees. Through a combination of keynote lectures, workshops facilitated by UQ academic staff and students, and a storytelling session, students will engage with the global, regional, and local dimensions of refugee and humanitarian law issues. The day will conclude with an expert panel discussion and Q&A with the audience chaired by Paul Barclay from ABC Radio National. The panel discussion will be recorded for broadcast. Drama News La Boite Theatre Student Ambassadors Each year La Boite Theatre Company selects over 95 students from schools across Queensland who all share a passion for theatre. This year the four Loreto girls chosen are Samantha Bull (Year 11 White), Flynn Hall (Year 12 Green) Sia Cambaclis and Rebecca Newman (Year 12 Red). On 28th January, the girls attended the Ambassador Program Orientation day where they were introduced to La Boite‟s artistic team and fellow ambassadors. They had the privilege of attending four workshops; puppetry, directing, performing and trending online, all led by specialists in the industry. On 18th February the girls will be attending their first special preview of La Boite‟s adaptation of Shakespeare‟s As You Like It where they will be able to have a meet and greet with the actors and artistic team involved in this production.
As You Like It - 18 Feb - 24 March Shakespeare‟s most joyous comedy is a feast of wit and wisdom, love and lust, cross-dressing and cross-purpose. If you are interested in attending a performance of “As You Like It” or any of La Boite‟s main stage productions throughout the year, please see one of these four girls who will be able to give you significantly discounted tickets. Grease Rehearsals continued for our “Grease” production last Friday after both school‟s swimming carnivals – talk about dedication! We also had a very productive rehearsal on Sunday where the leads did a very rough run through of ACT 1. The band, chorus and dancers have been working hard to learn, rehearse and perfect their various parts. We would like to remind students and parents once again that all rehearsals from this point on are compulsory (please refer to Student Contracts). Any clashes must be avoided. Debating News During the past week, Mr John McKinlay and I auditioned a very pleasing number of talented young girls for the QDU teams. My thanks go to Mr McKinlay for his generosity and help. As a result, there are twelve teams registered and these teams are now finalised. Unfortunately, we are short of coaches for a couple of teams. If there are any past students or parents who would be able to coach, we would love to hear from you. The first debate for Years 9 and 11 is on Wednesday March 7; for Years 10 and 12 it is on Wednesday March 14; and for Year 8, it is Wednesday March 21. The girls will have their first topic by the end of this week. When QDU notifies us of the time and venue, your daughter will be told. Girls will also be given a letter informing them of a Summer School to be run at Brisbane Boys‟ Grammar on Sunday 19 from 10.00 to 3.00pm. Music Support Group Welcome Supper The Music Support Group is a hard-working collection of parents of music students who are interested in assisting the College to run events and fundraise for the scholarships and equipment. IT Update Cybersafety – It’s everyone’s responsibility! In some recent studies a survey revealed that, “up to 88 per cent of parents fear their children could be victims of cyberbullying. Officeworks sampled more than 1000 Australian parents with children aged five to 14. The survey showed parents‟ worries were almost 14 per cent higher than at the same time last year.” It would be an appropriate time to have a conversation with your tweens and teens about appropriate behaviour online, internet usage and the critical role they can play by standing up to the perpetrators or alerting the right people, if as a

bystander, they find themselves witness to cyberbullying. The federal government has a comprehensive website which provides excellent resources and information for parents and students. I recommend that you visit this site - http://www.dbcde.gov.au/easyguide A brief summary of suggested guidelines for online behaviour is below. 1.
Look after each other online – talk with your family and friends about how to be cybersafe.
2.
Think before you post! Posting personal information – including photos – may seem harmless but could put people at risk. Once it's online, it's really hard to take down.
3.
Keep your passwords secret. To make your password really hard to hack make sure it includes numbers and symbols, and change it often.
4.
Use the privacy settings to control who can see your personal information. You can also use a site's settings to block users who make you feel uncomfortable.
5.
There is no such thing as safe sexting. You could be breaking the law if you send, receive or forward these types of pictures.
6.
Tribute pages dedicated to the memory of a friend or loved one need to be carefully monitored – it can be very upsetting if people make disrespectful or offensive comments on these pages. Carefully manage your page permissions to control who can access and post to the page.
Being a good online citizen requires the same standards of behaviour and law-abidance that is expected in the general community.

Welcome BBQ - An Invitation for all Loreto Families Thank you to all those who have already replied to the BBQ invitation, this helps catering enormously! Secondhand Uniform/Bookshop The shop will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:30 - 8:30am during February for the collection of late book orders. The uniform shop is also open at lunchtime (12:30 - 1:30pm) every Friday during the term .There are still a number of secondhand books available for purchase from the bookshop. Sports Department News Interhouse Swim Carnival The girls at Loreto College should be proud of the outstanding House spirit and participation they demonstrated at the school swimming carnival on Friday. The House Captains and senior students were impressive with their unwavering enthusiasm, leadership and participation. Thank you to the students who worked tirelessly on the pool deck to assist staff in running the event. Loreto Interschool Swim Squad The Interschool swim squad for 2012 has been selected and announced based on the results from the interhouse swim carnival. Training commences this Wednesday 8th February at 6.30am sharp at the Loreto swimming pool. It is ideal for the swimmers to arrive at 6.25am for a 6.30am start. The training sessions are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning with the Loreto Swim coach, Joshua Di Bella. All squad members will receive a booklet detailing the training program and competition commitments. The first Swim meet, will be held this Friday at Villanova College from 3.30pm to 6.00pm. Transport by Bus is available from the school. All competitors need to meet Mrs Stevens in the MWC directly after Home room. The meet will start at 4.00pm with a warm up at 3.30pm. Presentations and food will be provided from 5.30pm and students MUST be collected at Villanova at approximately 5.45pm to 6.00pm.

Loreto Tennis Competition There will be practise matches with the teams conducted next Saturday 11 February. The Tennis practise matches will be conducted at the BGGS Court, Gregory Terrace, Spring Hill and Loreto College; E and D GRADES – BGGS

All players MUST attend. Players will need to wear their PE uniform with the skirt (if already purchased), Loreto cap and bring a water bottle, sunscreen and a racquet. Please provide a healthy morning/afternoon tea to share as this is normally a practise for all our home matches. The teams will be announced this week and there will be a meeting with the teams to plan the training times. Training will begin next week starting 13 February 2012. All fixtures will begin 18 February 2012. A booklet will be distributed shortly when the draw is finalised. If you have any queries please don‟t hesitate to contact me. P & F Student Dance The annual student dance will be held on Saturday, 17th March from 7.00pm - 10.00pm in the Mary Ward Centre. This dance is for all Loreto students. The theme for the dance will be advised in the newsletter next week. A reminder that it is a CLOSED dance (no one can leave before 10.00 pm without a parent to pick them up) for Loreto students and boys from invited schools. Admission is $12.00. Current student ID is also required. The following rules of entry apply:
Alcohol, drugs, cigarettes and lighters are not permitted
No stiletto heels
Coats and bags are to be left in the cloak room before the dance
No chewing gum is permitted
Respectable dress standards are required.
Please take particular note of the last point and do not embarrass yourself or the parent volunteers by being inappropriately dressed. Parents will be phoned and asked to collect any girl who is not dressed appropriately. Be reminded that unacceptable attire includes (but is not limited to) the following:
No very short shorts or skirts
No midriff tops or backless tops
No plunging necklines
No masseur sandals or thongs.
