PLEASE SUPPORT US WITH THIS PETITION As many of you would be aware, a number of families have been significantly distressed by the closure of the Route 7 Bus Service.

Consequently, the P & F have posted an e‐pe

on on the Qld Parliament website.

This service previously provided a “one‐bus” journey for students from Loganholme to Coorparoo passing through Rochedale, Mansfield and along the length of Cavendish Road. Because of its closure students from Loreto, Seton and Villanova Colleges have been forced to catch up to three buses each way to and from school. This is not just a ma er of inconvenience and cost but most importantly it is a ma er of student safety.

We therefore urgently seek the support of all community members in asking the Government to subsidise the service as a “Translink route” so that it can be re‐instated.

You can help even if your child does not use this service. We need as many votes as possible. Anyone who is a Queensland resident can click on the link to vote. Please take a few seconds to help out members of our wider school community. If you can send the link to friends or rela ves who may help, that would be much appreciated.

WÜtÅt axãá Collage Drama Congratulations to our Year 10 Drama students who performed with such energy last Monday and Tuesday nights! The performances were varied and very creative. Thanks also to the parents, family and friends who made up our audience and we also acknowledge the hard work of teachers, Mrs Helen Radvan and Ms Zoey Grills. Again, well done, girls for providing two very entertaining evenings!

Auditions St Laurence’s College is holding auditions for the musical production of Oliver which is to be performed next May. The auditions are to be held on Saturday 17 November and rehearsals commence in February. If you are interested, please see Mrs O’Neill for the audition pack and details.

`âá|v axãá Congratulations Congratulations to April Lopez Vaquero for completing her Grade 1 AMEB Saxophone exam and to Sophie Muggeridge for completing Grade 2 Saxophone.

Music Auditions Music auditions for 2013 ensembles occurred over the weekend. The results from these auditions will be available on Thursday 8 November on the Music noticeboard. Please know that we endeavour to place everybody in an ensemble. The purpose of the auditions is to place students in the correct ensemble for their ability level. Thank you to the following students who assisted by staffing the administration desk at auditions: Larissa Claridge, Samantha Bull, Helen O’Dougherty, Elise Fort and Rebecca Gillman. Your help on the day was greatly appreciated.

Choir and Instrumentalists for Graduation Mass - 16 November Senior Choir has two more rehearsals to prepare for the graduation mass. Rehearsals are Nov 6 and Nov 13 from 3.30 – 4.40 in the Mary Ward Centre. Instrumentalists will be approached individually to ascertain their availability. Instrumentalists are asked to attend the rehearsal on Nov 13. Year Nine students from Junior Choir are invited to join with Senior Choir to prepare for this event.

fv|xÇvx axãá The end of the year is fast approaching, however, the pace has not abated in the labs here at Loreto. Year 8s are currently investigating the various modes of reproduction in plants, the Year 9s are learning about sports physiology and the Year 10s are currently working on experiments of their own design. We are seeing some novel apparatus and interesting innovations coming out of these classes and I am sure some great data will arise from these experiments. Our Year 11 Physics class are completing their extended experimental investigation on optics which has been great fun. The girls are enjoying using lenses, prisms, polarisers, refraction tanks, diffraction gratings, filters, mirrors and lasers to investigate the properties of light. In Year 11 Chemistry, we are exploring the chemistry of gases, while our Biology classes are looking at disease and the immune system and will be developing skills in aseptic technique to allow them to safely handle bacterial cultures in the laboratory.

Applications are now open for SPARQ-Ed 2013. This program is operated by the UQ and takes place at the Translational Research Institute at the PA hospital. This facility is newly built and features state of the art laboratories and research spaces. The program offers a great opportunity for students to participate in real, cutting edge projects in the realm of medical research. There are 5-day immersion programs available and attendees are eligible to earn a point under the University of Queensland Bonus Ranks Scheme to assist in tertiary entry. Shorter workshops are also provided in cell and molecular biology activities. Many sessions are conducted during school holidays. Round 7 Results Open A were defeated by Lourdes Hill 5 7 - 19 Lourdes Hill were faster and transitioned the ball at greater speed down the court. Loreto maintained intensity and rebounded with determination with Lauren Roberts and Krisitina Sams leading the way. Isabella Mammone landed a three point basket which got Loreto firing. Unfortunately the stronger team won on the day.

Open B defeated Mt St Michael’s 60 - 10 As the scoreline indicates this was a very one sided match with Loreto dominating from the onset. All players contributed to a pleasing win and this team continues to improve each week. Well done! Chiara Asnicar led the scoring in the first quarter, while Helen O’Dougherty had a strong all court game.

Intermediate A were defeated by All Hallows’ 49 - 24 Loreto really rose to the challenge and displayed determined and improved basketball against the strongest team in this division. There was an obvious improvement from the last encounter and Loreto fought hard to contain their very tall opposition. Ashleigh DaSilva had an outstanding game. A pleasing performance girls. Well done!

Intermediate B won 60 - 6 Loreto produced a well structured game, bought about by their guards forcing many easy turn overs. Georgia Garrett played well in transition to put pressure on the attackers while Lucy Nielson contributed 8 points in offense and passed well to team mates in the keyway. A resounding win which will hopefully put the team into good form for next week’s grand final.

Junior A defeated Our Lady’s 41 - 32 This was a solid game from Loreto. Vicki Flores-Rodriguez and Jessica Galpin led the way with strong defence while Zoe Sever and Brigitte Mastry took the ball to the basket with determination. The team must ensure they maintain a consistent intensity throughout the entire game, as lapses in next week’s grand final will be very costly. Another good win for the season.

Junior B were defeated by St Rita’s 36 - 15 Loreto displayed improved defence this week against a stronger opposition. While they were outclassed in the match they played determinedly to outscore St Rita’s in the final quarter. Riley Bennett and Lucy Briggs were strong in attack, but needed more controlled aggression from their team mates.

All players must bring a spare shirt to change into at the completion of this week’s match, as singlets will be collected by coaches at their playing venue.

c9 Y axãá Two long serving members of the Loreto College Parents & Friends Association were honoured for their service at the final meeting of the year. Principal Cheryl Hamilton made presentations to Elizabeth Fort, the outgoing P & F Secretary, and Lyndal Bray-Claridge, who has played an important role in producing the Year 12 girls' autograph books. Elizabeth has been Secretary of the P & F since 2009 and played a key role on the Music Support Group.

Cheryl and Helen Carty, Deputy Principal - Pastoral Care, paid tribute to Elizabeth's magnificent work, sense of humour, and calm. Lyndal devoted many long hours channelling her interest in and talent for calligraphy into producing the autograph books for the last three years. Anyone who has seen these books will realise what a great job she has done.

Cheryl also reported on the progress of the Master Plan, spoke about a new funding raising and community relations position, thanked the P & F for providing chocolates on World Teacher's Day, and congratulated the Music Support Group for 'Live and Wired'.

The only students who will be able to wear the old blue shorts and gold polo shirt in 2013 will be Year 12s whose only sporting commitment is their one lesson of Core PE each week. All students in Years 8 - 11 and Year 12s involved in inter-school sport must wear the new blue shorts and blue/gold polo shirt. Similarly, the old tracksuit should be longer be worn; the new, all blue tracksuit is now required.

Sizzler Break-up The annual Sizzler break up was celebrated by about 25 girls last Thursday 1st November. As always it was a wonderful celebration of the good work done by the outgoing executive and a welcome to the new executive. About twenty five girls attended the evening and it was very pleasing to see girls from Years Eight and Nine come along as this is where the future of St Vincent de Paul lies in our community. The girls enjoyed the dessert bar and the many variations they could achieve with the variety of toppings available. I was delighted that a member of the public took the time to come over and congratulate the ‘young ladies’ on their behaviour and obvious joy and companionship. It was a lovely way to celebrate the good works carried out this year.

Although the school year may be drawing to a close and thoughts turning to holidays, planning for next year is already underway. We are therefore now calling for nominations for 2013.

What does it involve? Parent Year Level Representatives generate community spirit by organising events such as drinks by the pool, dinner and other social events. If you have attended one of these events and enjoyed it, consider the planning that went into it. However these are not onerous tasks and we are happy to refer you to others who have acted as reps to determine if this is something you would like to do.
