Volume 6 - 4 March, 2014 Dear Parents and Students This week holds much to look forward to for us including "Mary Ward Connect"; the Council Oration on "Sincerity" with Sr Anne Kelly; the opening of our Tuckshop refurbishment; the Year 8 Retreat ; Health & PE Week; “Barry Potter” day; and the final frenetic week of preparation for the Musical. We welcome to Loreto six students each from Loreto Kirribilli in Sydney and Loreto Marryatville in Adelaide, together with their visiting teachers. I thank the families who have kindly opened their homes to host these girls and for taking the extra effort to show them something of our beautiful city whilst they are here. "Mary Ward Connect", is an exchange program that connects our Loreto Schools in Australia, so we also have twelve of our own Year 10's visiting either Loreto Kirribilli or Loreto Marryatville this week. We wish these students and their supervising teachers Mrs Dawes and Mrs Cody, a fabulous and enriching time. I know that they will come back to us with lots of stories to share. Personally, I have spent time working in both of these fine schools so I can say with great confidence that the girls will be delighted with what they experience and observe. We wish all participants safe travel. Tonight, Sr Anne Kelly ibvm will offer the annual Council Oration on the theme of "Sincerity". As a former Principal of both Loreto Kirribilli and Loreto Coorparoo it is marvellous to have her with us as an extension of our "Mary Ward Connect" program. Sr Anne’s recent placements include working with the Jesuit Refugee Service in Northern Uganda; working in support of women’s education in Dili in Timor Leste; and most recently Sr Anne represented the Loreto Sisters in New York where they hold a position as a NGO on the UN. These experiences should provide a rich background for tonight's address. I thank Sr Anne for her generous presence. I offer my special thanks to the Year Nine Leaders who tonight will be our hostesses. This week I return to school, along with 14 other staff, having spent three glorious days with our beautiful Year 12's on Retreat. What a pleasure and a privilege it is to have had this time together exploring our spirituality, our connectedness, our possibilities, our sense of self and our relationship with God. These retreats form a vital part of our Loreto mission to educate the whole person. They present marvellous opportunities for us to think more deeply and more purposefully about who and what we are and what it is that gives meaning to our lives. They are a gift of time, in a world of pace. I offer sincere and heartfelt thanks to each staff member for his or her generous commitment and presence. Particular thanks I offer to retreat leaders and coordinators, Mr Donnelly and Mr McAlinden, both of whom did a truly marvellous job.

LENT As we commence the season of Lent we are called to make extra time to reflect deeply on our lives, our relationships and our actions and to undertake our own personal commitment to forms of “Fasting and Alms Giving”. During the next six weeks, the students will thus be raising awareness and funds for the work of CARITAS as part of our annual “Project Compassion”. In anticipation I thank them for their generosity and efforts. CONGRATULATIONS To Jessica Galpin, Year 10, on her selection to the Under 16 Queensland Basketball squad. PARKING PRACTICES AROUND THE COLLEGE Despite notices that have been included in the newsletter earlier this year in relation to safe parking practices around the College, many parents are still choosing to ignore the restrictions and place students and others at risk of injury. The College has requested that the Queensland Police Service patrol the area, particularly during the afternoon pick up period, to ensure that parents comply with the restrictions. Anyone who is not complying will be issued with an infringement notice. The College has also contacted the City Council’s Brisbane Lifestyle Committee which oversights the Compliance and Regulatory Services. The Committee announced recently that the parking practices around selected schools will be monitored and any instances of non-compliance will be subject to an infringement notice being issued. Following contact by the College, the Committee has advised that Loreto College will be a subject of surveillance during Term 2 and in the meantime Rapid Response Officers will conduct random, periodic patrols to identify any unsafe and non-compliant practices. Airline Academy of Australia Are now running Flight Attendant training at their offices at Beatty Rd, Archerfield. The next available course will be commencing weekend 29 & 30 March consisting of Grooming/Deportment Saturday 29 (this can be for anyone interested in starting out in the workforce) and Airline Employment Skills on the 30 March 2014. The following weekend 5 April will be Flight Attendant Workshop and Sunday 6 will be Assessment Day and feedback. Students are able to purchase the four pack consisting of the four days or just pick however many modules they choose to do. Each module is $200 or purchase the four days for $750.00. Chess News Congratulations to the eight girls who took part in the first round of the Interschool Team Chess Tournament held on Tuesday 25 February at Brisbane Grammar School. The 28 Teams in the B grade division comprised 92 individual players from schools around Brisbane. Over the course of the year another two rounds will be played to select regional qualifiers who will then compete in the State Finals in October. Music News Crazy For You We are gearing up for a fantastic production next week – yes that’s right – next week! Some tickets are still available, particularly for opening night on Wednesday 12 March, so if you have not yet booked come along – you won’t be disappointed. Next week will be a massive week for the students (and staff) involved in the show with full run throughs, dress rehearsals, tech runs and four performances. To help students cope with these extensive demands on their time, along with the need to keep up with regular school work and assessment, the Music Department will be excusing all students involved in the Musical from all before and after school rehearsals during production week (Monday 10 March to Friday 14 March). We hope that this helps them get through the week! It is also our hope that giving students this breathing space next week will be reciprocated by each student making sure they know their ensemble parts for the following rehearsals – all groups still have Autumn Concerts to prepare for in very early Term 2.

Year 9 Music Excursion, Year 11/12 Music Excursion Each year we take classroom music students to see the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Schools’ Concert. Seeing music performed live is a vibrant experience, and this concert is designed especially for lower secondary school students with a compere explaining the background to the music, which provides a unique perspective to this event. Additionally, a feature of the concert is a performance by the winner of the Orchestra’s Solo Concerto competition, showing just what can be achieved by a student of their own age. This year the concert will be held on Wednesday 19 March. Unfortunately due to the popularity of this event we have only been able to book enough tickets to take our two Year 9 classes. We will leave school just before morning tea and return during lunch so that students miss very little class time. All costs for tickets and coach transport is paid for by the school, and the excursion will be accompanied by Mr Langford and Dr Svoboda. For this reason we also each year take our senior classes to see a live show, particularly to lead into the Year 11 unit “Music of the Stage and Screen” and the Year 12 unit “Great Moments in Music” where students study significant works that combine musical composition with other elements such as stage production. In 2014 , we will be taking the senior classes (11 and 12) to see “The King and I” on Wednesday 21 May at the Lyric Theatre. Again, the ticket price is covered by the school, however as the performance is in the evening it is our expectation that parents will organise transport to and from QPAC for their daughters. 2014 Next Step Survey The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide survey of all students who completed Year 12 in 2013. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12. Between March and June, all our students who completed Year 12 last year can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office to complete the survey. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate. Year 10 LMYAC & SELN Representatives Congratulations to Tiarnee Miller, Anna King and Mikaela Keyser on their appointments to the Lord Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council and the Student Environmental Leadership Network. As a representative on LMYAC, Tiarnee will collaborate with up to 60 other Year 10 students from the Brisbane Metropolitan area, to develop initiatives with Council for Young People on a broad range of topics. Anna and Mikaela will also work with other students as representatives on the SELN committee. SELN is a forum established to gain perspective on the issues young people identify in relation to the environment and sustainability. The students will attend an induction session and four formal sessions this year and have the opportunity to participate in other established Council projects and programs. Chicks at the Flicks For those who joined the Chicks at the Flicks Group in 2013, we will be continuing these nights in 2014 once or twice a term. Science News The labs are currently buzzing with activity at the moment. Our Year 12 Physics girls are studying electrostatics, electrodynamics and solid state electronics. This is a very contextual unit and part of the learning process involves taking apart old household appliances such as TVs, laptops, phones, stereos, microwave ovens and DVD players to discover how their componentry works. It is interesting how it is usually the girls who are initially apprehensive and tentative about using tools and dismantling things who end up being the most excited and animated by the end of the process. Sometimes it is hard to get them to stop! Our Year 8s are currently discovering how to use all of the strange looking equipment in our labs and will soon be conducting simple experimental investigations. The Year 9s are using computer simulations to model changes in the populations of organisms in a virtual ecosystem, while our year 10 students are experimentally investigating the effect of temperature on the rate of chemical reactions. The senior Biology and Chemistry classes are deep in theoretical study at the moment to prepare a solid platform of knowledge for upcoming excursions, Supervised Assessments, Extended Response Tasks and Extended Experimental Investigations.
The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Is a twelve day program for students moving into Year 12 who are thinking about a career in science, engineering and technology. It is held early in 2015 during the school holidays at the Australian National University, Canberra. The NYSF helps students who wish to follow careers in science, engineering and technology by introducing them to research and researchers, by encouraging the achievement of excellence in all their undertakings, and by helping to develop their communication and interpersonal skills. Girls are reminded that if they are travelling away from Loreto, they are to change into their playing uniform at lunchtime and report to the MWC at 3.05pm when the sports bell rings. If parents intend on collecting their daughter from the ‘away’ or home ‘Mt Gravatt’ venue, a note must be given to Mrs Gore by morning tea on match day. All buses aim to return to Loreto between 5.30-5.45pm, traffic dependent! Please Note: The address of the Mt Gravatt Youth and Recreation Club is 4 Weedon Street, Mansfield. Year 8 Tools for Learning Day Tuesday 18 February saw the Year 8 students involved in a Habits of Mind Immersion Experience. The students engaged in a variety of thinking exercises that challenged them to think critically and creatively. This experience allowed the girls to exercise their thinking and to work collaboratively with their peers. As a concluding exercise the girls were asked to write a ‘headline’ of their learning experience. Carindale PCYC What’s at Carindale PCYC for Youth ????? We’d love to see you around and help you to become the best young leader you can be. Here’s a couple of things that might interest you… The RAGE Team As a group you - Meet new people; Have a sense of belonging; and Grow as a Team. Who help out at Carindale PCYC in various way, sometimes helping at the disco, sometimes fundraising, sometimes working in the office and sometimes just getting together to go roller-skating or whatever. It’s an easy and obligation-free way to stay in the PCYC loop, and we welcome everyone and their mates anytime they like. The Duke of Edinburgh Program Use your time spent at PCYC to score yourself an INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED award. Volunteer some time, learn a new skill, play a sport and go on an Adventurous Journey with other cool young people and get yourself a Bronze, then Silver, then Gold Award, as well as up to 4 points towards your QCE! Girls United Program At NO COST to you, Girls United provides young girls an opportunity to grow in a safe, supervised, drug and alcohol free environment. The youth development program is specifically designed to encourage personal growth, participation in recreational and social activities, and learn everyday life skills. This is a 9 week program. Deep Blue Line Program For young men who need guidance to stay on track or get back to the correct track. This program is mainly run by a police officer for your young men to have fun, creative, interaction with a person of the law. If you’re young man is hanging with the wrong crowd, first time minor offenders, with nothing to do but hang around shopping centres, suicidal or has other health issues, this ideal. Also those who need a positive male role model in their life. SYLP (State Youth Leadership Program) PCYC’s are located all across Queensland, with hundreds of motivated and positive teens just like you. SYLP is a series of three camps, each a week long, that will challenge and inspire you to become the person you want to be. SYLP participants are selected by local PCYC Youth Worker staff and Levels One, Two and Three are run once each per year, with at least a year in between each time you go. A great opportunity for those who want to boost their leadership skills, work on their confidence and go further in helping their local community. Get Sporty at PCYC We’ve got tonnes of things to try at PCYC, whether you’re in it just for fun, learning a new thing or attempting to get to the Olympics, you’ll fit in just right in any of our classes! Bring a friend and have a laugh.. The Wrap Up So there’s just a couple of ways that we’d love to have you involved at Carindale PCYC.
