Volume 33 - 30 October, 2012 Dear Parents and Students Later this week the Catholic Church remembers in a special way all of those who have died. During the feast of “All Saints Day”, 1 November and “All Souls Day”, 2 November, we remember those whom the Church recognises as Saints and those other Souls whom we have dearly loved and lost. The Saints who have gone before us and the Souls of our yesterday remind us of the fleeting fragility of life and the importance of embracing each and every moment. I love the following reflective prayer that invites us to “look beneath” and offer this most especially in loving remembrance of Megan Rejfek, Simon Fuller and Mrs Mary Hermo. May their light ever shine upon us. Amen.

YEAR 11 LEADERSHIP ELECTIONS I offer sincere congratulations to the following four students on their nominations for College Captain in 2013. Emmeline-Kate Ball; Sabrina Ciancio; Ellen Cunningham; and Laura Sclavos. It is such a privilege and an honour to be selected by one’s peers. I wish them every success in their leadership and congratulate the Year 11’s on the fine calibre of the nominees they have chosen. YEAR 10 COLLAGE DRAMA Congratulations to the students on the wonderful success of their Collage Drama performances. The girls worked collaboratively and enthusiastically to script and produce works that were creative, thought provoking and professional. They can be very proud to have achieved such pleasing standards and high praise from their audiences. Well done girls! 2012 COLLEGE MAGAZINE It has been our past practice to distribute the annual College Magazine on the final day of fourth term. Whilst this timeline has the obvious benefits of bringing closure to the year’s journal, it has the significant disadvantage of producing an incomplete publication. This practice has not allowed for many fourth term events and achievements to be recorded and neither has it allowed for a formal record of the important end of year prizes and awards to be reflected in that year’s publication. As these are significant achievements to note we will, from now on, be releasing the annual College Magazine at the commencement of the following year. This will thus ensure that the magazine better reflects the complete picture of the year. This change has been adopted in response to feedback from all stakeholders. I thank all contributors and the editorial committee for their time, energy and commitment.

Career News New at Griffith - Secure your Future OP 1-6 Guarantee - Students awarded an OP 1-6 (or ATAR of 90.00+ or equivalent) are eligible for the Griffith OP 1-6 guarantee, which gives them guaranteed entry into most of our undergraduate degrees from Semester 1, 2013. Griffith Uni hopes this initiative will encourage students to aim higher and help them to secure their future earlier. Pre-requisites still apply and there are some exceptions to the degrees included in the scheme - medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, midwifery, nutrition and Queensland Conservatorium degrees.
Griffith University New Program Bachelor of Pharmacy - new on the Gold Coast in 2013 Based at the cutting-edge health facilities on the Gold Coast, the new four year degree will lead to registration as a pharmacist after completion of the 48 week intern training program, and is accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council. The Bachelor of Pharmacy provides a strong grounding in biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences, and the School of Pharmacy's strengths in Pharmacy Management, Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Pharmacology are available as specialist courses within the degree program.

Drama News Year 10 Collage Drama Performance On Monday 29 October and Tuesday 30 October, the Year 10 Drama students are performing their public Collage Drama performance. The performance begins at 7.00pm sharp so audience members are requested to be seated by 6.55pm. It is being held on the Mary Ward stage and admission is by gold coin donation. The performers are expected to remain after school and a pizza dinner will be organised for them. They are also reminded to bring along a plate of food for supper. This can be delivered to the Mary Ward canteen. We look forward to seeing a supportive audience for our talented students. Music News MUSIC NIGHT 2012 - FRIDAY 2 NOVEMBER 6.00PM Attendance: It is expected that all students in performing ensembles attend the Music Night in which their group is performing. Arrival times and venues are listed below. It is expected that students stay for the duration of the concert. A high standard of behaviour is expected. No mobile phones should be used during the concert. Uniform: All Groups (except Guitar Ensembles who will wear all black) require: Full School Uniform with socks Blue hair ribbons NO MAKE-UP Members of the Guitar Ensembles who also perform in other groups will be required to change during the concert. CELTIC STORM Congratulations to all musicians and dancers who performed in Celtic Storm at Villanova last Thursday and Friday evenings. Senior choir will have two more rehearsals (Nov 6 and Nov 13) for the Graduation Mass (Nov 16). These rehearsals will finish at 4.30pm. Year 9 students from Junior Choir are invited to join with the Senior Choir for these rehearsals. ORCHESTRA AND OTHER ENSEMBLES Orchestra has now completed all rehearsals for the year. Round 6 Results Open A were defeated by Mt Alvernia 32 to 24. In a close match, Loreto were able to maintain defensive pressure throughout the match. Strong drives to the basket secured offensive fouls and Loreto began to gain momentum in the final quarter. Isabelle Mowen top scored with 11 points and Taili Beausang scored 8. Open B defeated Lourdes Hill 40 to 26. Loreto displayed great enthusiasm and intensity throughout the match. Defence was the key to success with Loreto producing many crucial turn overs. Chiara Asnicar had a strong game, while Sam Vickerman, Lauren Higgins, Zoe Dennehy and Helen O’Dougherty were tireless in their efforts. Intermediate A were defeated by Lourdes Hill 36 to 24. Loreto faced strong opposition again this week, but put up a strong fight to play some excellent basketball. Gabrielle Stein and Mia Page lead the way in attack while Emily Taylor was outstanding in defence. A pleasing performance despite the loss. Intermediate B defeated Mt St Michael’s 28 to 14. A scorchingly hot first quarter where Mt St Michael’s had no answers for shots off the backboard. Loreto held their opposition to only 2 points in this first quarter, but the game soon became more competitive. A welcome return from holidays – Lauren Effeney was a great help in bringing the ball up the court and driving through the lane. Junior A were defeated by All Hallows’ 47 to 19. All Hallows’ dominated this match but Loreto maintained their determination and effort. Brigitte Mastry, Zoe Sever and Jessica Galpin had strong drives to the basket while Frances Wong and Ashley Parker gave good support. Junior B were defeated by Brigidine 30 to 10. Loreto demonstrated improvement from last week’s match and this was pleasing. Under 14 Solid effort from the girls but unlucky it didn’t go their way. Georgia was our star player saving the defence numerous times. The team was defeated by Brigidine 9 to 4. Coach: Oliver Chamber Under 15 – This team had a bye this week Under 18 The girls had an unfinished game on Saturday against Brigidine. The weather prevented the game from finishing its last two quarters. Nevertheless it was evident in the first two quarters that everyone has improved. Swim Squad There is Swim Squad training on a Tuesday and Thursday morning from 6.45am to 8.00am at Loreto pool. This is in preparation for the 2013 season. Parent Sport Support Group News Wine and Cheese night on Tuesday 13 November from 7.30pm to 9.00pm in the Mary Ward Centre. Please see flyer attached to this newsletter for details and RSVP. Loreto College is developing a Sport Support Group to support the sport program and promote the growth of sport. The group will meet on a monthly basis with the P & F President, John Welch, Director of Sport, Meg Stevens and sport staff to provide feedback opportunities for parents; to plan fundraising events; and to discuss any relevant matters. Queensland Volleyball Schools’ Cup On the weekend of 19 - 20 October, Loreto entered two teams into the state wide Volleyball Carnival. It was a great weekend - full of excitement, determination and good old Loreto Spirit. My thanks and congratulations are extended to the girls, their parents and the coaches. It was wonderful experience and one that has helped us prepare us for Volleyball 2013. Intermediate Girls 2: A team of Year 9 and 10 Loreto students competed in the All Schools Volleyball Tournament at Beenleigh. Being the first time the girls had played since the BGSSA season in Term One, a few were a little rusty! With the help of coaches Maddy and Margaux Page, the team made it to the competition and succeeded with a few wins under their belts. Winning 3 and losing 3, a great effort was given by the whole team. All of the games were close and played with determination, everyone acquiring a few bruises over the weekend! The tournament ended with a bang as the team secured their third win and 9th place overall. Erin Stafford Junior Girls 2: The Queensland Junior Girls Volleyball cup was held over three days last week from Friday 19 October to Sunday 21 October. The Loreto team consisted of Anja Anderson, Samantha Crawford, Victoria Flores-Rodriguez, Nikki Foley, Georgia Garrett, Kassidy Graham, Sophie Hinchliffe, Lucy Nielson, Grace O'Shea, Kate O'Sullivan and Matilda Ruffin. Of the 20 teams in our competition Loreto placed 14th against some very strong opposition. The three day carnival was an opportunity for the girls to hone our volleyball skills, practise our formation and gain experience in officiating at games when not competing. It is always a great opportunity at these events to cement friendships within the team and gain valuable experience for our next school volleyball season. Our thanks must go to Mrs Gold and Mrs Gore for giving up their time to be with us, encouraging and guiding us. Although the event was very tiring it was certainly a rewarding experience. St Vincent de Paul News Last Thursday 25 October, I had the pleasure of accompanying eleven girls from Years 8 and 9 who assisted with the annual Holland Park Meals on Wheels afternoon tea. This is something the girls look forward to every year as it allows time for a friendly chat over a cup of tea and lots of fun drawing the raffle prizes. The girls assist with the setting up and serving of the afternoon tea treats and spend time chatting to the clients who are keen to engage them in conversation. The girls volunteer at Holland Park Meals on Wheels at Easter and at Christmas when they accompany regular members of the Meals on Wheels team who deliver to those in need in our community. At Easter the girls supply Easter Eggs with the meals and at Christmas a small gift and in return receive huge smiles and kind words of appreciation. Uniform Shop/Blazer Fittings The second hand uniform shop will be open on the following mornings from 7.30-8.30am . This is to give working parents time to come with their daughters for blazer fittings. Please note that the shop will ONLY be open for blazer fitting NOT general uniform sales in the mornings. Year 10 Toiletries Donations The Year 10’s are running a donation drive to help support the BYS organisation. Brisbane Youth Service is a locally based organisation who provides a community hub for homeless or at risk young people and young families (aged 12-26 years). They are in particular need of ‘female’ products and other general toiletry items. If you can help please donate any toiletry items, especially underwear, sanitary products, deodorant , toothbrushes, toothpaste and tissues. All contributions will be gratefully received. Year Level Parent Representatives 2013 “Children grow up quickly and in what seems like the blink of an eye they have left school. Don’t let that special time pass without actively participating in their lives by playing a role at the school.
