Volume 16 - 29 May, 2012 Dear Parents and Students

With God’s grace guiding and holding us at this moment, I wish to inform you that we received news this morning advising us that Megan Rejfek passed away in the early hours of this morning and is at last at peace.

We have been a community in profound shock, despair and sadness these past few weeks, as we hoped and prayed for a miracle, against the odds, that Megan might survive. This precious me has been a gi , both to her family and to us. We know that everything possible has been done, that could be done, to bring her back to us, but in the end, her place is with the angels, dancing amongst the stars.

We give thanks for Megan’s life of light and goodness. Her joy, her loving and gorgeous smile, and the inner freedom she had to be content and happy within herself, meant that she brought love and grace wherever she went.

We know that she rests now with God in heaven, eternally. Ever watching over and smiling with us.

The Bishops of Australia have nominated this as a YEAR OF GRACE. Their call to each of us is that we seek the gi s of the Holy Spirit to “Start afresh from Christ”. www.yearofgrace.catholic.org.au

Gracious God You have blessed this ancient land with many gi s, especially its people. We thank you for the Year of Grace, a me to start afresh from Christ. You invite us to contemplate the face of Jesus your Son, that we may experience a new wave of grace, and that the light of Christ may burn more brightly in our lives. A une our hearts and minds to the presence of your Holy Spirit, that our Church may be transformed, our rela onships be healed, and our na on grow in compassion and jus ce. With the intercession of St Mary MacKillop, and the Venerable Mary Ward, who both showed us new ways of living the Gospel, we make our prayer through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Mary, Help of Chris ans, pray for us.

VtÜxxÜá axãá Year 11 Enrichment Program All Year Eleven students participate in the Enrichment Program. The major aim of the program is to provide Year 11 students with an opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes which may not otherwise be nurtured in the mainstream curriculum; interact with students from outside their curriculum subjects; participate in learning activities in a less stressful atmosphere than exists in formal lessons and to become aware of the necessary skills required for the workforce in the future. As part of the Work Readiness Program students will be involved in one Pre-Licence Driver Training session. This session will consist of one ninety minute session and include the following topics:

 Knowledge of the Car  New rules and regulations and log book samples  Passing the Learners Test  Skills needed in the Car such as driver awareness and Defensive Driving techniques Simulated Driving Experience which tests reflexes, observation & awareness. The session is conducted by Glenn Valentine of Roadworks Driver Training (information letter attached). I would like to thank Glenn for his continued support of the Work Readiness Program. Chris Cuskelly - Industry Placement Coordinator

Wxutà|Çz axãá Round Three of Debating ended last Thursday. It was a successful round with four straight wins and three forfeit wins. It was very difficult for those teams who arrived to find either no team or no adjudicator turn up. I hope you found the mock debates you did with other schools helpful in improving your skills. For those who lost, it was by only a very small margin in each case, so take heart and think about how much better you will be next time! At this stage, 12.1, 10.1 and 8.1 have won all three rounds. Congratulations to those girls and coaches Mr Pat Elsworthy, Mrs Helen Radvan and Mr John McKinlay. Five other teams have two wins to their credit, so this following round is crucial in who goes forward to the finals. I ask the girls to prepare well, attend meetings and take note of the advice given by coaches and adjudicators. Good luck to Years 9 and 11 this week! Rosemary O’Neill - Debating Coordinator

XvÉÇÉÅ|vá gÜ|Ñ àÉ VtÇuxÜÜt Last Sunday May 20, 18 Year 12 Economics students along with Ms Diamond and myself, embarked on a two day excursion to our nation’s capital for a dose of “Economics in action”. The girls are currently studying the unit “Contemporary Economic Management”, and were able to investigate government decision making at a federal level, as well as improve their civics knowledge. The trip took the students to the Australian War Memorial, the Australian Institute of Sport, The Australian Electoral Centre and Parliament House. On the Monday, the Australian Electoral Centre provided an excellent program on the voting process, whilst Parliament House provided the students with opportunities for understanding the process of debating a bill through role play (a program provided by the Parliamentary Education Office), an informative tour of both the House of Representatives and the Senate as well as a session watching a very interesting “Question Time” whilst the House of Representatives was sitting. One of the highlights of the trip was meeting our local member for Griffith, The Honourable Kevin Rudd. We felt very honoured and privileged to meet him in his office at Parliament House before Question Time, as well as to be given the opportunity to ask him questions, both of an economic and social nature. I would like to thank the Australian Government for contributing with funding for this trip under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate programme. Their support of this programme plays a vital role in enabling us to take on this trip.

Thank you also to the eighteen girls who attended – Alexandra Cracknell, Emma Currey, Zoe Dennehy, Ceinwyn Elliot, Yana Flourentzou, Kate Fuller, Madison Heinrich, Lili Hoelscher, Fiona Malone, Sophia Markey-Towler, Liz Pike, Grace Power, Megan Prendergast, Kate Stanton, Greta Smart, Lisa Tang, Dayna Watson and Maddison –Rose Young – they were fine ambassadors for Loreto College. Finally I would also like to thank Ms Diamond for her attendance and assistance on the trip; it was invaluable. I think I am safe in saying we all had a wonderful and enriching educational experience. Diane Hanson - Economics Coordinator

\g axãá Student ID Cards At the beginning of the year we issued all students with new ‘touch’ ID cards and a Loreto College lanyard. These cards not only provide identification for each of our students but they are also an important tool for use at school. These cards are essential for printing, self-registering for late arrival at student reception and for borrowing from the library. When used correctly they save a great deal of time because of the reduced need to manually log on to print, or in the case of late arrival, to write out and sign the late arrival book. Library resources cannot be borrowed without a card. Most of our students have embraced the use of the ID card and have it with them at all times and use it appropriately. However, there are some girls who are becoming forgetful about having their ID card with them. This is causing problems at both printers and in student reception as it takes much longer to process whatever it is that they need to do. The ID card is a compulsory item of uniform and students who regularly do not have their card with them will be issued with a uniform detention. If your daughter has lost her card she needs to replace it for a cost of $10 at student reception. She can also get a replacement lanyard if necessary. We would appreciate your support in this matter. Mr Gavin Swanson - Deputy Principal - ICT

`âá|v axãá Music Support Group – Parents of students involved in either ensembles or private tuition are invited to attend our next Music Support Group meeting on Wednesday 13 June at 7:30 in Room 605 (Gonzaga Barry Building). New parents are always welcome! Loreto Music Festival Finals Concert – Don’t forget to keep Wednesday 20 June free for the Musical event of Term 2 – the Finals Concert for the Loreto Music Festival. The evening will run from 6 pm to approximately 9:30 pm and features the best performances from this term’s heats, so it is always a great night. Trivia Night – Early Term 3 make sure you then keep Saturday 4 August free for the social event of the year! Trivia Mill will be back for what is always a hugely entertaining night, this time with a 50s Theme. To get you in the mood, there will be prizes for best costume and best decorated table. Ticket and booking information will be available before the end of this term so watch the newsletters closely and don’t miss out! Prize Donation Request – The Music Support Group needs quite a number of lucky door and raffle prizes each year to help raise money to fund the $8000.00 of tuition scholarships that it provides for our students. Anyone in the school community who would be able to donate a small item that would be suitable for one of these prizes would be making a valuable contribution that goes directly back to supporting our students. Donations can be anything from movie ticket and gift vouchers, to bottles of wine, to make-up/personal items that can be grouped into a basket and any donations are very appreciated. If you have something to donate, you can simply leave it at the school office with a note “for the MSG Raffles” or contact Karen Carr in the Music Office on 3394 9915. Rehearsals during Exam Block – As always, the Music Department will be cancelling, or excusing students from, quite a number of rehearsals during exam block so that they can focus on preparing for their assessment. However, with QCMF fast approaching, where possible we will still run rehearsals at their normal times. Could all music students and parents take careful note of the attached rehearsal schedule for the last few weeks of term so that there is no confusion regarding which rehearsals are affected? If a rehearsal is on, then it is our expectation that students involved attend.

Thanks once again to Liam and Lisa for their generous hospitality.

fxÇ|ÉÜ c{çá|vá cÜÉzÜtÅ @ lxtÜ DD As part of the College Senior Physics Program, students in Year 11 will be visiting the Dreamworld theme park at Coomera on Friday 20th July 2012 (first week back, Term 3) to conduct experiments and apply what they have been studying in Kinematics, Dynamics and Mechanics to the features of the theme park. The data yielded from this outing and the concepts learned will contribute towards an extended response task for assessment. The cost for this excursion is covered within the fee structure of the school and so the only money that the students will need is for lunch, morning tea and afternoon tea, plus any spending money you deem appropriate.

fÑÉÜàá WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá BSGSA Sport Soccer Round 3 - This Week’s Draw: 30 May This week the Open B and Junior B teams play at home (please note the Open B game has been changed to a HOME game now). The Open B and Junior B team both play against St Rita’s College at Annerley Soccer Club, 98 Victoria Terrace, Annerley. The Open A team play away to Lourdes Hill at Easts Football Club, Heath Park, Hilton St, East Brisbane The Junior A team play away to Mt St Michael’s, Mitchelton Soccer Club, Teralba Park, Osborne Road, Mitchelton. For the away games, could parents please be ready to pick up students when the bus arrives between 5:30 - 6:00pm, depending on traffic. A bus will take students to Annerley for the home games (finish at 5:00pm) but students need to be picked up at the venue. Students are reminded to bring their uniform, shin pads, mouth guards and water bottles. If students are to be picked up at the away venues a written note must be provided by morning tea on game day. Good luck for Round 3! Mr Jones - Soccer Coordinator

Results Rd 2: Open A The game against All Hallows was a tough match which ended in a 3-0 win to Loreto. The goals were scored by Emmy, Zoe-lee and Steph. It has been a good start to the season and we look forward to next weeks game. Jess McLean - Coach Open B The second game of the season against Stuartholme ended in a 2– All draw. Some great defence from Awien, Kyroe and Sara in the second half gave us a platform to begin our come back in the second half. A strong performance up front from Anita and Martia George, with two cracking goals from Anita allowing us to draw level. Well done all the girls for a great team effort . Michael Kelly - Coach Junior A The Junior A team competed against All Hallows’. It was a hard game with the opposing team getting some lucky runs through to score goals. The team played fantastically with the defensive players giving it their all to try and stop the opposition. Christina Stephanos was the first to score for Loreto College with a beautiful chip that went straight over the goal keeper’s head and sailed into the net. Our next goal came from Mikayla Papantonia who made a fantastic run up the right wing beating the defence and shooting the ball to the side of the keeper. During the game, Parissa Pelecas made many impressive intercepts while also helping to set up forward players to make a run. Key players included Parissa Pelecas, Christina Stephanos and Mikayla Papantonia. The girls played a good game with an unfortunate loss, yet kept their heads held high and showed a great sense of sportsmanship towards their opponents. Louise Norton - Coach Junior B Last week saw the Junior B team play against Lourdes Hill. It was a well fought match with the final result being 2 - 1 to Loreto, who scored in the last few minutes. The Loreto girls worked well as a team especially when they were attacking. Good work to Tayla Schwarze who played a great game in defence. Nick Laidlaw - Coach Junior B For their first game of the season, on 16 May, the Junior B tem played San Sisto. It was a tough game with the final result being 7 - 0 to San Sisto. The Loreto girls took a little time to get into the game, but once this happened they started to work well as a team. Despite what the score line suggests, the defence played quite well and stopped many goal scoring opportunities. Nick Laidlaw - Coach

Hockey Results Rd 2: Open One Round 2 saw the team playing against Mount St Michael’s 2. The match spun out to be a fairly one sided affair with only a single convincing shot being fired by the opposition in our goalie’s direction. Lauren Williams defended the box with ease, deflecting the ball safely away in an instant. The rest of the fixture was dominated by Tullee Allendorf’ s blistering runs up the pitch at left inner and the rock solid defence provided by Ellen Carey and Georgia McAuliffe at the back .

Is Mowen stepped into the role of centre half this week and claimed a great goal due to a hit from the top of the circle that went like a rifle shot into the mid left corner of the box. Amber Schmidt slotted into right inner with ease, firing off some great linking passes to Lauren at centre forward and executing several intimidating carries through the quaking MSM2 defenders. Larissa Claridge had a great time on the right wing, bagging two solid goals via skilful runs along the baseline and she also provided some great crosses, one of which went to Tullee who subsequently converted it into a well- earned and much anticipated goal. Lauren Welch’s move up into centre forward payed off with a deft deflection into the back of the net, while Ellen Carey’s brief stint up high this game also yielded a point for her. Emma Currey had her first match for the season and showed what a tenacious defender she is in the half line while Sandy Vo stayed true to form, forcing two free hits and a short corner on the opposition. The game finished 6-0; a convincing victory and a great effort considering the absences and positional changes this round. Matt Lourigan - Open One Coach Open Two It was a tough game this week against the generally older and more experienced Mount St Michael’s One team. Our girls gave it their best shot but unfortunately the final score favoured the opposition 6 – 0. The girls got a lot of practise in defensive roles which will benefit them for their upcoming games. Tahlia Simms, Jemma Stubs, and Lucy Power are to be commended on their top efforts throughout the game. In addition, special mention to Georgia Paroz and Kaya Nishimura with some impressive kicks and saves in goals. Ian Wright and Eliza Mooney - Open Two Coach / Trainer

BSGSA Grass Hockey Reminders to all Hockey players the training sessions are Monday afternoons for Seniors and Tuesday mornings for Juniors. Tuesday morning sessions are well attended with few absences. However, Monday afternoon training sessions are not well attended by senior players with some players frequently failing to show. A reminder there is an option for those senior players who cannot make Monday afternoons to attend training on Tuesday mornings.

Turf Hockey We have still not had contact from the organising body regarding the Turf Hockey competition. Hopefully, we will have something soon. In the meantime we are arranging a scratch match with Moreton Bay College to be held Tuesday morning on 19th June at Easts Tiger Turf. There will be a training session this week and we will look at another session on the Thursday morning prior to the match after the exam block for Years 8 to 11 have finished. Alan Lane-Richardson - Hockey Coordinator

There WILL BE NO training next Monday, Tuesday and Thursday due to exams. There WILL BE BSGSA matches next week on Correction day. Girls will be expected to be at the Mary Ward Centre no later than 3.00pm Results: Round 2 Junior A - Coming off a loss last week, the girls were determined and committed in defeating St John Fisher College. The circle defence had an outstanding game which had a flow on effect right down the court, with our centre court and shooters turning over some much needed balls as well. Clare Lyons and Jesse St Ledger’s feeds in to the circle were constantly accurate and allowed for our shooters to convert into points. Great improvement from last week’s game allowing the girls to celebrate the successful win. Excellent effort! Coach: Clare Gill Junior B – Another win for the girls this week after defeating Mt Alvernia 25-12. The game got to a slow start with lots of loose balls. However, the girls took my advice and played some beautiful netball. Player of the game goes to Charlotte Grigson for her exceptional holds and perfect hands up defence. A special mention goes to our shooters Sidonie Smith, Lauren Michael, Beth Kassulke and Mia Munch, nice shooting girls! Coach: Josie Woolaston Junior C – The team defeated Mt St Michael’s 10-9. A game divided clearly into four quarters with alternating ebbs and flows! At half time the score was fairly level, but this quickly blew out to 5-9 (to MSM). A big fourth quarter was needed and it was achieved. While it was the whole team who delivered the 10-9 win, I'd like to congratulate Farren Buckley on her great leads and intensity in the centre court and Sophie Tomlinson on her superb goal shooting and rebounding. Coach: Mrs Gold Junior D - For only the second game of the season the Junior D netball girls played another exceptional game winning against Mount Alvernia. They each played brilliantly and as a team and this was a result of their hard work at training. Special mention must go to the shooters, Nicole Kulczyk, Imogen Day and Anna King. Keep up the good work girls and good luck for next week. Coach: Hannah Meecham Intermediate A - Played Mt St Michael’s and lost 24-10. Quite a few girls were absent due to sickness and we had Maddy Knudsen from the B team fill in for us but still had no reserves which means all girls played a full game. That being said, all girls played well especially Zoe Zils who played most of the game at Centre and fed the ball well into the shooters. Coach: Courtney Milne

Intermediate B1 - The girls faced a formidable opponent in the Our Lady’s College team this week in a spectacular game of netball. At half time the score was 7-8 and we were down by one point. In the second half we matched them goal for goal until in the final minute of the game their shooter placed them one goal in front. The girls tried their hardest to get one last goal to tie the match but unfortunately ran out of time. Our players have sworn they will beat the Our Lady’s team when they next meet! Special mention must go to Rebecca Marshall for an incredible number of intercepted balls as Goal Defence. Every girl played her heart out in what will be one of the closest matches of the season! Coach: Bridget O’Connor and Mrs Matheson Intermediate B2 - The team had another great week of training and game play. After another narrow loss to St Rita's this week (10-7), the team really looks forward to the remainder of the season. We will continue to play and train hard in order to improve and hopefully win during the next few weeks. Congratulations girls, you are doing really well for the first part of the season! Coach: Emma Macleod Intermediate C - Had another great win this week against St Rita's; 30-10. They are already showing improvements as individuals and as a team. Hopefully it will continue next week. Coach: Magadeline Ryan Intermediate D - Defeated Brigidine 32 – 9, in another dominant performance. Excellent defensive pressure from all players across the court enabling Loreto to come away with the win. The centre court players were dynamic in their speed and provided well placed feeds into the circle. Strong defensive work by Sam Crawford and Grace O'Shea provided an impressive number of turnovers. Well Done Girls! Coach: Briony Logan Intermediate E - A good game for all the girls! The girls played a fantastic game (even without subs). It was an enthusiastic first half which resulted in a 19-15 win over Lourdes Hill. Great defence by all throughout the game, especially by Natasha, Mason and Tiarna down the centre court. Coach: Tara Cullinan Open A - The Open A team were ready and determined to challenge the premiership winning team from last year and put up a very strong fight. After some first quarter nerves where Mt Alvernia gained a 6 – 2 lead, they settled in to play a strong second quarter, keeping the scores close at half time. Unfortunately Mt Alvernia was stronger in the third quarter and with their solid shooting and amazing height in defence, ran away to a 30 – 17 victory in the end. A great shooting combination in Annie Passingham and Sam Firrell and gutsy, hard work in the centre court by Eliza Davies and Eloise Jackson were highlights for Loreto. Coach: Meg Logan Open B – Played Mt Alvernia (1) and we were defeated 27 – 12. It was a challenging game with girls out due to injury. Coach: Karen Holahan Open C – Defeated John Fisher 22-5. After a rocky start to the season Loreto came out strong in the second round! The girls worked well together implementing everything from training into the game. Special mention must go to Emily Smallhorn for outstanding defence and a strong attacking game! Coach: Larissa Hughes CSGSSA Cross Country Meet Last Friday 25 May the CSGSSA Cross Country carnival was held at Limestone Park, Ipswich. The Cross Country squad had excellent preparation in lead up to the competition. Congratulations to the team - they put in a great effort considering the conditions they experienced on the day. Congratulations to the following competitors: Kate O’Sullivan who was placed 8th and Megan Laycock who was placed 10th in the 14 years age group and Hannah Wixted who was 6th and Kate Mullen 10th in the 15 years age group. Eloise Carroll was awarded 12th in the 17 years age group. The overall performances placed Loreto College 4th in the percentage trophy and 5th in the overall aggregate for Beirne Cup. This was a vast improvement from 2011. Congratulations to the girls, particularly those who trained persistently throughout the season. Well done to Toula Savva for her excellent leadership as Captain. On behalf of Loreto College we would also like to thank our outstanding coaches, Clare Geraghty and Andrew Lulham, for preparing our athletes for the competition. Meg Stevens - Director of Sport

Dear Year 11 Parents As part of the Work Readiness Program at Loreto College, Year 11 students will be involved in one Pre‐Licence Driver Training session. Your daughter will need many and varied skills to successfully enter the workforce. One skill that a prospec ve employer will look favorably upon is her ability to drive. An applicant wpith a driver’s licence will o en be chosen before an applicant without. However, according to the RACQ Road Ahead Magazine (Aug/ Sept 2003) “….driving in the workplace is probably the most dangerous ac vity a worker can undertake.” Driving a vehicle is the single most dangerous ac vity most people will un‐ dertake in their lives. Yet, most drivers do not receive adequate training in this area. A more extensive theore cal back‐ ground will help provide students with a be er understanding of the perils of the road and equip them with the skills to minimize risk and deal with dangerous situa ons. This training course will consist of one ninety minute session and include the following topics:

 Knowledge of the Car  New rules and regula ons and log book samples  Passing the Learners Test  Skills needed in the Car such as driver awareness and Defensive Driving techniques  Simulated Driving Experience which tests reflexes, observa on & awareness. Once the theore cal component is completed and a Learner Licence obtained, students must then spend many hours comple ng prac cal training. New legisla on requires individuals (under twenty‐five) to undergo 100 hours of supervised driving. Whilst parents, guardians, family and friends are an invaluable asset during this process, a professional learn‐to‐ drive program with an accredited driver trainer usually achieves the most effec ve result. This “Learner Driver Session” will help prepare par cipants for these “on the road” sessions. Once a student is in the car they are keen to drive, not listen to theore cal strategies. Therefore, if we can deal with this in the safety of a classroom, they will receive a more rounded apprecia on of the intricacies of driving. Students and parents can check us out at our website at‐ www.roadworks.net.au and while you are there, click the “like” bu on to become a friend of Roadworks on Facebook.

Yours sincerely Glenn Valen ne
