Volume 37 - 27 November, 2012 Dear Parents and Students
Mary said: ‘My soul glorifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me – holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation’. Luke 1: 46‐50 Luke’s Gospel tells us that, as she was waiting for Jesus to be born, Mary visited her cousin, Elizabeth. This was the occasion on which Mary spoke the words of the Magnificat, a prayer which has resonated with Christians throughout the ages. It is called the Magnificat because that was the first word of the prayer in Latin. Older English translations used to begin ‘my soul magnifies the Lord’. Sometimes old words contain their own riches. The image of a soul magnifying God, a bit like a magnifying glass, is evocative. It is our job to help make God seem a bit larger in the lives of people. Nobody did this better than Mary. Source: Finding God’s Traces, Michael McGirr
