Dear Parents Second-hand Uniform Trading The College is conscious of the need to provide an efficient process for families to be able to recycle their uniforms and student resources. Beginning in 2014 there will be a new system for the sale and purchase of second-hand uniforms, details of which are set out below. This move was endorsed at a meeting of the P & F late in 2012.

I am delighted to inform you of the school’s new initiative to provide parents with the ability to trade second-hand items via the “Sustainable School Shop”. Families are assisted to list For Sale & Wanted advertisements online and the system then matches buyers with sellers.

Results from other schools have been excellent; families have enjoyed a comprehensive and convenient method of trading these second-hand items.

The Sustainable School Shop is providing complimentary Annual Family Memberships until 31st January 2014 and we would encourage parents to take full advantage of this opportunity. You need to nominate the College when you register on the Sustainable School Shop website to receive your complimentary Annual Family Membership (lasts 365 days).

The service provides access to second-hand uniforms all year round. We will monitor the progress of this system for second-hand uniforms only in the initial phase and it may be extended in the future to cover other items such as books, musical instruments, calculators and the like.

As a result of this change, the second-hand uniform shop will not be trading after the end of this Term and is no longer receiving supplies.

Students worked from a photograph and using a grid enlarged a selected area to create an interesting composition. They then explored ways of mixing colours and a variety of painting techniques to create paintings that showed colour, texture and depth. Their artwork is presented below.

VtÜxxÜ axãá JMC Academy High School Introductory Workshops Will be running in the upcoming September school holidays. These sessions are a great opportunity for students in Year 10, 11 or 12 who are interested in a particular field to come on to our campus and participate in a fun and hands-on workshop.

We will be running ALL of the below workshops on Tuesday 24th September: •

Music, Entertainment and Audio Workshop (Covering aspects of Music Performance, Entertainment Business Management and Audio Engineering and Sound Production)

Funds raised will be directed to the important and life-changing work undertaken around the world by Mary Ward International. MWI supports the Loreto Sisters’ mission in areas such as Education, Community Development and Health and Social Justice. Prizes have been very kindly donated by Vintage Wine Cellars, Pacific Golf Club and Bunnings Warehouse. The raffle will be drawn at our celebratory Father’s Day breakfast, this Friday 30 August.

XÇzÄ|á{ axãá Year 10s are visiting Cremorne Theatre at Southbank next Thursday evening to view the play ‘Tequila Mockingbird’ which is a great link to their studied text ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. Their English teachers will accompany the students for the performance. We ask the girls to arrive in the foyer by 7 o’clock to collect their tickets for a 7.30 performance. The performance is 90 minutes and a prompt pick up at 9 o’clock would be appreciated. Dress is smart casual. We are pleased that 100 students are attending, as it is important that students see literature written in the 1960s as still relevant to contemporary society.

Recently, Year 11s have been working with Writer in Residence, Paula Weston, as they write their short stories from their recent Literary Tour. They are writing a story with a sense of Brisbane in any style they choose. Paula was able to share the benefits of her writing experience and her inspirational sources. Many students enjoyed the interactions with Paula as she read through their stories and gave them valuable tips to make their stories effective. We are looking forward to reading the girls’ stories which are due at the end of the week.

Year 12s were entertained by the Shake and Stir Company recently with their ‘Bard to the Bone’ performance of ‘Macbeth’, ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Othello’. The modern context for the Shakespearean plays was imaginative and the acting styles were gripping.

The girls were most attentive and gained more understanding of the plays as performance, rather than studies. Next week the girls will be performing their own interpretations of a Shakespearean character through a collage drama. They have been working diligently to ensure that they can ‘bring alive’ a character for a modern audience.

`âá|v axãá Primary Music Camp – Last Sunday, 76 students from 20 different local primary schools came to the Mary Ward Centre for the fifth annual Loreto Music Camp. Over the course of the day a primary String Ensemble, Junior Concert Band and Senior Concert Band prepared a program of music to perform in concert for parents and friends that same afternoon – a huge achievement for such young musicians! The camp was run by music staff at Loreto who were very ably assisted by members of our own String Ensemble and Concert Band One. The fact that many of the primary students were returning for their second and third camps is a clear indication of both the quality of the event and the enjoyment it brings the participants. Thank you to all the students who helped out both during the day and at the afternoon concert. Put the date of the 2014 Camp (Sunday 24 August) in your calendar straight away – such a successful event will definitely run again next year!

Ensemble Auditions – By the end of this term Audition Forms for participation in 2014 Loreto Ensembles will be distributed to interested students. It is therefore now an ideal time to briefly explain some of the main goals of the Ensemble Program at Loreto! At its core, and in no particular order of priority, the Ensemble Program aims to (a) provide an appropriate performance opportunity for all students at the school, (b) provide both support for less experienced musicians and extension for more advanced musicians, (c) promote the enjoyment of music, (d) contribute to the development of each student in both their formal education and personal qualities.

One important way that Loreto Music endeavours to achieve these aims is by running four core ensembles – Concert Band One, Senior Choir, Guitar Ensemble One and String Ensemble. Between them these four groups best cater for the highest possible student participation and cover virtually all instruments/voices. However, even these large groups must have limits so that they can operate effectively. Therefore these four groups are supported by a wide range of ensembles designed to assist less experienced students to develop the skills needed to move into the core ensembles (specifically Concert Band Two, Percussion Ensemble Two, Flute Ensemble Two, Beginner Brass Ensemble, Junior Choir, Guitar Ensemble Two). It is the College’s expectation that every student who is involved in the Ensemble Program would be a member of one of the four core groups, or its appropriate supporting ensemble, as maintaining the quality of the core ensembles is central to our ability to provide quality musical opportunities for the largest number of students at the school.

Loreto also then runs a number of advanced ensembles so as to provide extension for students with advanced skills (Jazz Ensemble, Sorelle, Exit Stage Left, Clarinet Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble One, Flute Ensemble One, Chorale, String Quartet, Symphony Orchestra). While often it seems like these advanced groups are the ones in the spotlight, they can only maintain their ongoing quality when built from participation and support for the core ensembles.

Master Classes – Over the past two weeks, students in the Year 12 Music Extension class have performed at a series of Master Classes. In a Master Class situation, a student (from the Music Extension class) is given a public lesson by an specialist clinician. Both the performer and the other students who are invited to watch gain the benefit of the clinician’s expertise as they work through the advanced repertoire played at this level of study. This year’s Master Classes have focussed on Guitar, Voice, Piano and Violin to match the performance specialties of the current Year 12 class, and are a vital part of the student’s preparation for their final Performance Recital to be held on Thursday 10 October.

Exit Stage Left – Could parents and members of Exit Stage Left please note that, due to extensive clashes of commitments with sports trainings, the rehearsal timeslot for this ensemble has been moved to Tuesday lunchtimes, starting this week (today!). Members of the band need to bring their lunch straight to 701 at the start of the break so that we can make best use of this time.

Bandslam – The final for Bandslam will be held in the Mary Ward Centre at lunch on Tuesday 10 September. If you are in a band and have not yet entered, then see Mrs Carr at the music office by this Friday! Points for entrants, finalist and the section winner will contribute to the House Trophy for the Loreto Music Festival.

Lunchtime Music Recital – Soloists and duets are invited to register to perform in a Lunchtime Recital on the MWC stage on Friday 6 September. Please sign up on the music noticeboard if you are interested.

Crazy For You Auditions From this Friday 30 August, all audition materials for the 2014 musical "Crazy For You" will be available on the Villanova College web site.

Students intending to audition for "Crazy For You" should consider attending the audition read-through afternoon on Monday 9 September 3:30-4:30pm at Hanrahan Theatre, Villanova College. During this brief session, students will be introduced to the storyline and characters of the musical, view Youtube clips of other schools' productions, listen to a selection of tracks from the 1992 Broadway production, and meet some of the key production staff. Attendance at the read-through will ensure you are as well prepared for your auditions as you possibly could be!

The auditions for all girls (singing, dancing and acting) will take place at Villanova College on Monday 14 October, commencing at 3:30pm. fxvÉÇw [tÇw hÇ|yÉÜÅ f{ÉÑ Due to the uniform shop shutting down at the end of Term 3, we require any parents who have items in the shop for sale to please contact Anne Herft so that arrangements can be made for you to collect any unsold item. If these are not collected by the end of term, it will be assumed that you no longer require these items and arrangements will be made for leftover items to be sold and funds donated to the P&F. We can no longer sell the “old” style blazers so if you would like us to, we can remove the pockets and send the blazers onto SVDP who issue these to the needy or homeless. If you have a blazer in the uniform shop can you let me know if you are happy with these arrangements. Current families who wish to order blazers have until the end of term to have their daughters fitted. Other arrangements will be made for new 2014 families to attend a special fitting day (dates to be finalised). More information will be available once we have the sustainable school shop up and running. The uniform shop still has a reasonable supply of uniforms so if you are looking for any uniforms, now may be a good time to buy!

fv|xÇvx jxx~ We had an eventful and exciting Science Week this year with explosions, flying saucers, aliens, quizzes, solar cookers, star gazing and expanding marshmallows. It was fantastic to see the girls get involved and a lot of fun was had by both staff and students. A special thank you to Bridget Pekin, one of our enthusiastic year 11 Chemistry and Physics students, for all of her assistance over the week.

The Science Experience is a three day hands-on science activities program for Year 9 and 10 students being held at UQ, Griffith Uni and QUT over the Christmas holidays. Students in Years 10-12 who are interested in a career in Engineering are invited to attend the University of Queensland’s Engineering Futures Evening (hosted by the Women in Engineering program). jtÄ~tà{ÉÇ ÁjÉÅxÇËá jtÄ~ yÉÜ jtàxÜË This term the SRC are holding Loreto’s first walkathon, scheduled for the last day of Term 3, 20 September. The Women’s Walk for Water will focus on raising funds for Care Australia’s Give Water for Life Appeal. In the last year, the appeal has helped more than 27 million people throughout the world to implement sustainable water practices. It has released women and girls from the time consuming task of collecting water; this time can now be spent attending school and gaining a valuable education.

In the year of justice, we are inviting every student to participate dressed as a female Superhero of your choice. There will be a Best Dressed award up for grabs for one girl from each house and also for the house that is judged best dressed overall.

The walk will take place over two hours and the course will finish with a lap of the oval. On this lap, girls will be required to carry two 2litre bottles of water, to symbolise the struggle that many women in third world countries experience.
