IMPROVEMENTS TO REPORTING TO PARENTS As a direct result of feedback received from Parents, as part of the Whole School Survey, we have this year decided to provide Interim Reports for all students at the end of Term One. Previously these Interim Reports have only been sent to parents of Years 8 and 11 students, new students and a small number of others in Years 9, 10 and 12.

The Interim Reports will provide parents with informa on about how well the students are performing in rela on to the following aspects of class behaviour and par cipa on:

 Coping with Class Work

 Prepara on for Classes

 Par cipa on in Classes

 Classroom Behaviour

It is important to note that the Interim Report is not an Assessment Report.

Your daughter’s Interim Report will be posted out during the first week of the Holidays and with it will come an invita on for Parents to make appointment mes with one of your daughter’s Homeroom Teachers for the Parent/Student/Homeroom Teacher Interviews.

These will be held on the a ernoon and early evening of Tuesday 6 May. Instruc ons about how to make on‐line bookings for these appointments will also be provided with the Reports. Bookings will be able to be made via the “Parent Lounge” portal.

At these interviews the Interim Reports will provide a good basis for discussion about your daughter’s learning habits and possible strategies she could employ for improvement should this be needed.

THANK YOU  To members of the School Choir, Mrs Nielson and Mr Langford for your very beau ful music and magnificent singing at last week’s State Funeral of the Hon Warwick Parer AM, former Senator for Qld. Your contribu on was greatly appreciated by all present and most especially by the Parer family who have asked me to pass onto you their sincere thanks.

CONGRATULATIONS  To Mikaela Di Savia (Year 10) who has been selected for the Metropolitan East Under 19 Years Football team at the State Championships on 22 to 25 May in Ipswich. We wish Mikaela every success.

Curriculum & Year Level Reports Introduction of the Flexischools Card System to the Loreto Tuckshop As part of our tuckshop re-development we are implementing a payment and online ordering system called ‘Flexischools’ which will allow payment for tuckshop items using the current Loreto Student ID Card. This system is widely used across many schools in Brisbane and will enable us to improve the efficiency of the flow in and out of the tuckshop as students purchase food and drink, which will be particularly necessary in 2015 when Year 7 students join us. The advantages that the Flexischools Card System will offer include: 

Works with existing Loreto Student ID Card



Reduces or eliminates the need for cash at school



Fast operation – reduced queuing times



Parents can monitor purchases online and set credit limits



On-screen photo ID security

We will be phasing in the various features of Flexischools during Terms 2 and 3 of this year.

Term 2 Students will be able to pay for tuckshop purchases by using their Loreto ID Card or by using cash. Instructions will be provided very soon to parents about the process of registering and setting up an online account for students so that girls can purchase using their Loreto ID Cards. No financial or personal information will be stored on their cards.

Term 3 From the start of Term 3 we will also be implementing an online ordering system so that tuckshop orders and payment can be done from home. Also at this time the tuckshop will become completely cashless and will require ID cards for any purchases.

Illness During Exam Block A reminder to all Students (Years 8 - 12) and Parents / Guardians that a Medical Certificate is required for any absence during the upcoming exam block. If you are unable to attend any session, please notify the office on the morning of the Assessment session and then bring the certificate to the office immediately on your return to school.

Language Department News French The Alliance Française French Film Festival comes to Brisbane every year in March and April, giving Australians the chance to see authentic French films with English subtitles. Last Monday, Madame Dawes and Madame Stewart had the pleasure of taking 30 Loreto students to see the French Film “Belle et Sébastien”. Originally based on the novel by Cécile Aubry, “Belle et Sébastien” ran as a TV series in France and the UK in the 60’s and 70’s and has now been made into a feature film. It is the story of a 6 year old French boy, Sebastian, and his Pyrenean mountain dog, Belle. The film featured much beautiful French scenery, stories of love and danger and lots of French!

It also gained many ‘oohs’, ‘aahs’ and a few tears from our girls!

Japanese Preparations for the Japanese trip in July this year are well underway. Final payments have been made and the recent trip meeting discussed money, phones and packing suggestions. Hada Sensei will soon be looking for families to host the incoming Japanese exchange students visiting in July – be sure to speak to Sensei directly if you are interested in hosting.

Year 8 Japanese students spent a lunchtime last week learning about Japanese culture. They watched some Japanese anime, tasted Japanese lollies and played a typical Japanese game: Fruit Basket!

German Willkommen in den Loreto Deutschklub!

A regular Friday lunchtime feature in Room 606 is “Deutschklub – German Club”. Students who study German – as well as those who don’t – are encouraged to come along to join in the fun and learn some German as well. Board games, memory games, cards and YouTube clips of German songs are just some of the activities available to all Loreto students. Last week, one group of Year 10 students was playing “Scrabble”. Due to the multi-lingual nature of the group, words in German, French and English were being used to play the game! Ocassionally German sweets and chocolates are given out as an incentive (not a bribe!) to join in the fun of learning a foreign language

Science News The term is now in full swing in the Science Department. In addition to our busy on-site curriculum program, there are a number of external enrichment activities available: 

The University of Queensland and St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School are hosting the Aspiring Women in Science Conference over 23 - 24 May. It is aimed at girls in Years 10 to 12 wanting to continue their science education at a tertiary level and is hosted by ABC Radio’s Madonna King with guest speakers who work in fields such as medicine, meteorology, engineering and environmental science. It promises to be an informative and inspiring event.



The QUT Vice-Chancellor’s STEM camp is designed to give students a taste of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines by engaging in a hands-on, intensive exploration of a project in their chosen discipline.

Students will work in teams of 3 - 4 and apply their creativity and investigative skills on topics such as: addressing environmental issues; solving problems in the energy, food and medical sectors; and improving information dissemination and security. The STEM Camp is an intellectually challenging five day event, run in the Term 3 holiday break, 29 September - 3 October. The camp is fully funded by QUT – there is no cost for students to attend and it is open to Year 11 students. The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a twelve day program for students moving into Year 12 who are thinking about a career in science, engineering and technology. It is held early in 2015 during the school holidays at the Australian National University, Canberra. It helps students who wish to follow careers in science, engineering and technology by introducing them to research and researchers, by encouraging the achievement of excellence in all their undertakings, and by helping to develop their communication and interpersonal skills. The University of Queensland Junior Physics Olympiad (JPhO) is a 5-day hands-on immersive programme for Year 10 students being held on campus from Monday 7 - Friday 11 July (in the school holidays). It encourages students to expand their knowledge of physics, confront and solve problems and focus on practical learning. As many students in Year 10 have not yet formally studied physics, JPhO assumes only a strong general knowledge of science and mathematics in attendees. JPhO includes lectures, tutorials, tours and interactive workshops and students will gain an insight into the work of UQ lecturers and researchers in the school of mathematics and physics. The program provides an excellent introduction to senior physics and is a wonderful opportunity to meet students from all over the state. Any interested students can visit www.smp.uq.edu.au/jpho .

All of these events are great opportunities to investigate possible future career options and meet like-minded young people with an affinity for the Sciences. 2014 Kokoda Challenge This year eight young women and two teachers from Loreto College have signed up to take part in The Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge 48km Jim Stillman Cup on 19 July. The Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge is hailed as Australia’s toughest endurance cross country course with an overall distance of 96km, the length of the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea. Even though these young women will be travelling half the distance of the track, the challenge is still demanding.

To meet the challenge with confidence, strength and fitness team members have committed to training regularly on Wednesday’s and most Saturday mornings for the first half of the year. The first stage of training has finished after completing a 17km hike on Sunday over some of the tougher tracks on Mt Coot-tha and enduring the heat. Well done to those that battled on regardless of cramps, sore muscles and the flu to finish the challenge they set for themselves. Thank you to all the parents who came along as support crew on Sunday. The help is very much appreciated.

The next practice hike will be on the Saturday 17 May along the last 30km of the actual Kokoda Challenge course. In Term Two students will be building on the training they have done for the first practice hike in Term One in order to be prepared for the increased difficulty of the next practice hike. After school training on Wednesday will continue as usual and weekend training sessions will be held in Brisbane Forest Park for this preparation.

Loreto Warriors Water Polo A huge congratulations to the three teams that competed in the semi-finals last Saturday.

It was an exciting match with the U13's C team playing BGGS. It was a nail-biting game with Loreto girls displaying an outstanding performance in their line of defence. It was a draw until the last quarter and unfortunately in the last 10 seconds, BGGS scored a goal, finishing 6 - 5. Excellent effort to our U16's who played BGGS and won 10 – 4. The U18's team played St Peter’s and won convincingly 11-2. These teams are playing in the finals next Saturday at the Valley pool.

We wish the U16’s and U18’s every success in the final on Saturday 29 March at the Valley Pool, 432 Wickham Street, Fortitude Valley. The times are as follows: 12.30pm

A reminder to all water polo players are to attend the Presentation afternoon on 30 March at the Clem Jones Centre. (Please see attached flyer) Meg Stevens – Director of Sport Cross Country Training Squad The Cross Country Squad will be selected from the Inter-House Cross Country carnival. A meeting will be arranged directly after the carnival to provide information booklets including school holiday training at Whites Hill. All students must return their permission slips in the first week of Term 2 regarding attendance at meets.

Interhouse Cross Country The Inter-house Cross Country will be held on Thursday 3 APRIL 2014. The Inter-house Cross Country will be held at Whites Hill Reserve, Boundary St, COORPAROO. The students will be transported by bus to the venue and returned at approximately 11.20am. A map of the course will be displayed on every Home Room noticeboard. Every student is expected to complete this course whether it is by running or walking. It will be a 3 kilometre course on the ovals and in the bushland. The House Captains and Representatives are looking forward to having their teams come together and compete in a very spirited manner. If a student is unable to complete the course a note must be given to Mrs Stevens at the Sports Office explaining the reason for your daughter’s non-participation. Students are to wear their school sports uniform and cap to school and bring a shirt in their house colour to compete in. All students need to wear lace up running shoes. It is recommended that all students bring a water bottle. If there is rain forecast for Thursday morning all students please bring along your books for all lessons in case the Carnival is called off in the morning.

This year Loreto College Science Department encourages you to support Earth Hour

Three ways that you can do this are:   

Log on to the earth hour website and register your support http://earthhour.org.au/about/ Watch the earth hour documentary on Channel 10 Turn your lights off on Saturday 29 from 8:30pm till 9:30pm or join us on the school oval for an earth hour under the stars. It will be a dark night and Saturn and Jupiter will be in full show along with their moons.

Students with family and friends attending earth hour on the oval should let their Science teacher know numbers for catering purposes.

In the event of poor weather you should call the following number around 7pm on Saturday 29 March to check that the star gazing will be going ahead.

Second Hand Text Books We wish to advise families who sold second-hand text books through the College in November 2013 that the money for these books has been credited to your school fees account. This payment will appear on your Term 2 School Fees.

Another payment which will be credited to your Term 2 School Fees is the Textbook Allowance – money received by the College from the Federal Government. The amounts for 2014 are as follows: Years 8, 9 and 10 - $115.00 Years 11 and 12 - $250.00 Term 2 School Fees will be issued in the week beginning 31 March and payable by Tuesday 22 April 2014. If you still have outstanding Term 1 fees and have not made arrangements with the College, payment in full is required immediately.

College Blazer Orders We have been informed by Ranier that the new blazer orders and blazers having honour pockets embroidered will not arrive until approximately 28 April. Once these arrive and are checked off they will be distributed to the students in homeroom groups. I will notify the students via the morning notices once they are ready for collection. Thank you.
