Gracious God, We ask your blessing on our Year 12’s and their teachers as they come together this week in prayer and reflection.

May your Spirit be ever present: guiding, comforting, nurturing and holding them gently in Your love.

May they find strength through deepening friendships; courage in verity; wisdom by listening; and hope in dreaming.

We give thanks for the gifts they each uniquely bring and offer our heartfelt prayers for their well-being and spiritual growth. Amen.

YEAR 7 CAMP I extend to the Year 7 teachers my sincere thanks for their time and commitment given so generously in support of the students at last week’s Year 7 camp. The teachers were unanimous in their praise of the students who participated with enthusiasm and energy. Several teachers made mention to me of just how supportive and encouraging the girls were of each other. Many girls were challenged and extended by the various activities and their individual success was duly recognised, celebrated and applauded enthusiastically by their peers. The students are to be commended for their positive, cheerful and encouraging involvement. What a delightful start these girls have made to their time at Loreto.

I offer particular thanks to Mrs Nielson and Ms Gallen for the extra efforts given over many months in preparation for this camp. I thank them too for their own boundless enthusiasm and energy. Our girls are indeed fortunate.

Loreto College Cashless Tuckshop Loreto College is always seeking to make your interactions with the school more convenient and secure and that’s why we engaged Flexischools to provide a cashless way to use the school tuckshop.

This system allows parents or students to place an Online Order for the tuckshop from home, work or school at any time via the internet or your mobile device. Students can also use their Student Card to purchase items over the tuckshop counter.

This cashless card system has been live since the beginning of Term 3, 2014.

The Loreto tuckshop is completely cashless so if your daughter is to use the tuckshop, you must have set up a Flexischools account for her.

Student Card Payments Students can now use their student card to purchase goods at the tuckshop.

Parents set up a Flexischools account online and pre-load their account with funds. Students can make purchases at the tuckshop by swiping their card at the cash register. Parents can, if they wish, view their daughter’s purchases online and can set a daily spending limit on the student’s card. The cards do not carry any financial information on them and connect to a secure database here at school. When a student makes a purchase her photo appears on the cash register screen ensuring another student’s card cannot be used. If a student loses a card it can be disabled very quickly and a student issued with a new one. Once replaced with a new card the old card cannot be used for purchases as part of the security process.

Online Ordering Parents and students will be able to order from the tuckshop online up to 9:30 in the morning. The payment for this is also done online, so you no longer need to send cash or a paper order to school. As well as being convenient for parents, the online orders are more accurate and much faster for the tuckshop to operate.

Set Up Your Account Setting up an account for either Online Ordering or Card Payments is done online and only takes a minute. Once you know your daughter’s Loreto Student Number you are able to register. For Year 7 and Year 8 students starting in 2015, they have been given their Loreto Student Number when they started school. Once you have your daughter’s Loreto Student number, simply go to www.flexischools.com.au and click Register. If you have a son or daughter in another school and have already set up a Flexischools account, you can simply add your daughter to your existing account. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. You can activate the card payments during the online registration by entering your student card number indicated on the student card.

A few tips for registration are below.

1.

Ensure that your daughter has activated her card at school and you link your daughter’s Loreto ID card to the account you have setup. When you link the card number you must use your daughter’s student number which begins with an ‘s’ for student eg. s1977323. Please use a lower case ‘s’ at the beginning of the student ID number.

2.

If you set a daily cash limit on this account your daughter will not be able to purchase anything that goes over this limit. You may like to review the tuckshop menu before you set this limit. If you do an online order this limit does not apply.

3.

There also needs to be sufficient funds in your Flexischools’ account if your daughter is to be able to buy from the tuckshop. You may consider enabling an auto top on your account once it reaches a certain level to alleviate this problem.

The system operates via a pre-paid account, so you don’t need to scrounge for coins in the morning and can easily budget for your spending throughout the term. There are a variety of payment options supported, including Visa, MasterCard (credit and debit), PayPal and Bank Transfer. Some top-up methods have fees or restrictions – please check online for details.

What does it cost?

Student Card payments at the canteen attract no transaction fee, but online pre-orders of food incur a 25c fee per order. Bank Transfers are free but cause a delay for the funds to reach us. Credit Card payments are online and immediate, but incur a 29c fee, which is similar for PayPal, but the fee is 35c.

Art Department It was wonderful to see so many Year 7 Students at Art Club last Thursday lunch time. In spite of just returning from their very energetic camp at Tallebudgera, they engaged with enthusiasm as they explored a range of art activities which will lay the foundations for the task next meeting which is to draw imaginary animals. By completing the SETPlan via the secure student section of the website, parents and guardians are encouraged to work with their daughters in reviewing their school and career goals prior to the Parent/Student Homeroom Teacher Interviews which will be held on 5 May 2015. Musical Theatre Audition Workshop Applications are now open for this workshop which will be held 6 – 10 July 2015 at the Griffith University’s Woolloongabba studios. Need help to prepare for a music audition?

The Open Conservatorium, within the Queensland Conservatorium at Griffith University, offers a range of different programs for all ages. One of the programs of interest to students wanting to go on to study music at tertiary level is the tertiary preparation workshop. This workshop is designed to prepare students for the theoretical and practical aspects of the audition process. The workshop will be held from 29 June – 3 July 2015. Pathways to Art and Fashion discussion panels QUT Precincts hosts a series of free panel discussions for students in Years 10 – 12 who are interested in pursuing a career in the areas of visual art and fashion. Year 7 Camp What a magnificent three days we had at the Tallebudgera Beach Outdoor Education Centre. The activities were run by experienced and effective staff who dared the girls to go beyond their limits. We regularly heard them ask, “Can you go one more step?” or state “If you can’t go one more step…then go two.” The girls rose to this challenge. It was amazing to observe their determination and courage, but even more rewarding to watch the way they supported and encouraged each other. I think this photo of Gabrielle Cameron sums up the feelings of many of the girls as they worked hard to achieve a goal. I love the punch of the air as she reaches the top of a particularly difficult section of the high ropes course.

The camp proved to be an excellent opportunity for the girls to forge connections and friendships outside their homeroom groups. I commend the girls for their excellent behaviour and their enthusiasm. It was a pleasure to take them away for this experience.

Thank you to the Year Seven homeroom teachers for their assistance in running this camp and particularly to Ms Tania Gallen for her vision and planning of this event.

Year 11 Semi-Formal The Year 11 girls are looking forward to their Semi-Formal with eager anticipation. The aim of the evening is to provide an introduction into the etiquette and delight derived from a more formal occasion than most girls would have experienced at this stage of their lives. Inviting a partner adds to this sense of celebration and responsibility. The Greek Club venue and the attendance of Year 11 Homeroom teachers will provide the girls with a safe, festive and formal environment in which to celebrate their important transition into the Senior School.

Over the next few weeks, the girls will be briefed about expectations of dress, behaviour and partners. We ask that parents support us by personally delivering their daughters and partners to the Greek Club punctually at 7.30 pm and then again promptly picking them up at 11.00pm. No one will be allowed to leave the venue before 11.00pm. All partners must produce a current ID card from their school and your daughters have been asked to politely introduce their partners to their Homeroom teachers.

Whilst Loreto College does not support the girls attending ‘post parties’, we are aware that some girls may progress from the Semi-Formal to other celebrations. The responsibility for the safety of the girls moves back to their parents at this stage but the girls also need to be aware that their actions for the entire evening will reflect upon the College.

It is timely, therefore to remind parents about the issue of alcohol consumption by underage drinkers. Many girls may have their parents believing at this stage that ALL girls will be attending a post Semi-formal party and MOST girls will be consuming alcohol. This is not true but these beliefs contribute to the normalization and cultural acceptance of drinking and often lead to episodes of binge drinking which can seriously harm the health of your daughters. If you are permitting your daughter to attend a party please ensure their safety by:



Ensuring that your daughter gives you the phone number of the parents in charge.



Checking with the host parents of the party that there will be sufficient adult supervision at a safe and suitable venue, security at the door/gate, water, soft drinks and food.



Checking that there is a restricted guest list.



Taking a strong stance against the consumption of alcohol by these underage teenagers.



Personally delivering and picking up your daughter from the party at a pre-arranged time.



Making sure your daughter keeps a fully charged mobile phone with her throughout the party.



Discussing these harm minimization strategies with your daughter.

Music News Beginner Ensembles – Initial sessions this Wednesday Thank you to all those Year 7 and 8 students who are keen to learn brass, strings or oboe through the Beginner Ensembles Program. One of the absolutely most important contributing factors to your daughter’s enjoyment of playing music will be placing them on the correct instrument. One big part of this process is taking note of their own preferences and another is offering each girl advice on which instruments they will physically match and find easiest to play (eg it can be harder to play double bass if they are not very tall. Similarly, if they have naturally larger lips, playing horn or trumpet might be difficult but trombone or euphonium may be an excellent choice). To allow our specialists a chance to work with each girl before we suggest an instrument for the semester, we would ask if all girls who have not already done so could please see Mrs Reck and Ms Clark in room 703 at one of the following times: Brass players at the start of lunch on Tuesday (today!) and String players at the start of lunch on Wednesday (tomorrow). We will then be able to offer places and hopefully start lessons and rehearsals next week. Reminders for students have been placed in the school notices, so please ask your daughters to look out for these.

Sorelle Performance Sorelle has been invited to perform at All Hallows School on Saturday 14 March in a short concert celebrating International Women’s Day. The concert will be starting a little earlier than previously thought at 7pm so I expect that arrival time would need to be closer to 6pm. If parents and students could please put this date in their calendars, I will pass on more information as soon as it comes to hand!

Music Tour to Mt Gambier By last Friday all parents should have responded to the Music Tour Invitation by returning a signed Consent Form and filling out the online Medical Form. If you have not yet done so, yet are planning for your daughter to attend the tour, please contact the Music Department urgently as we are now finalising all bookings. Please also make sure that you meet the deposit deadline of this Friday 27 March so that the tour is in a financial position to complete all required bookings.

Ensemble Badges On assembly on Monday, students were awarded Music Badges for participation in school ensembles. The basic criteria for earning a Music Badge is to participate in a particular style of group for three years, (two previous years and continuing into the current year or award). During this time, it is expected that students attend rehearsals regularly, prepare for and behave appropriately during these rehearsals, and attend all concerts and performances in which their groups are involved. This is a significant commitment as music groups run all year with weekly rehearsals and at least three formal concerts. We congratulate all girls who received their Ensemble Badges in 2015! If, for some reason, your daughter believes that she has met all these criteria but she was not awarded a badge on Monday, please ask her to see Mr Langford or Mrs Carr in the Music Office urgently. With so many ensembles and students involved, it is not unheard of for our lists to contain errors and omissions - sometimes students join groups part way through a year or forget to return audition forms and don’t end up being credited on the rolls. In all cases, we will re-check with conductors and make corrections if appropriate.

Music Camp Lost Property A new “Black Wolf” brand sleeping bag was lost during the concert at the end of Music Camp. If anyone has found this item, or mixed it up with their own, could you please bring it to the Music Office so that it can be returned to its owner? I also currently have in the Music Office a large red and green sleeping bag, in a black Coleman Pilbara C3 bag, left over from the Music Camp. Please claim this item if it is yours.

Music Support Group Last Wednesday it was lovely to see a large number of new faces at the Music Support Group Welcome supper. If you could not make it, don’t worry! There will be plenty of more opportunities to attend meetings, participate in social events and help out with concerts this year. Meeting dates are generally the second Wednesday of each month, with the occasional shift to the third Wednesday due to placement of holidays. Meetings for this year will be on the following dates: 11 March, 22 April, 13 May, 10 June, 22 July, 19 August, 9 September, 14 October, 11 November.

Music Extension Excursion On Tuesday 6 March, students currently studying Music Extension are invited to attend a half day excursion to the University of Queensland to help with their Investigation Task research. On this day, they will complete a tour of both online and print services available at the UQ Music Library and the State Library, before taking some time to locate specific resources for their chosen topic. The students will depart Loreto directly after Homeroom in the morning , and return to the school during lunch time. A letter with all details of this excursion has been distributed to students.

Mrs Lissa Gyte - Curriculum Leader Performing Arts

Public Speaking Over the past few weeks, four of our students have participated in the Lions Youth of the Year competition. They are - Amelia Abdelrazek (Year 11), Lauren Causer, Rachel Larkin and Siobhan Setch (Year 12).

The girls acquitted themselves very well, speaking confidently and knowledgably in their two Impromptu Speeches and Prepared Speech. We congratulate all four girls and commend Amelia Abdelrazek and Rachel Larkin on being awarded Best Public Speaker for the Carindale/Camp Hill and McGregor Clubs respectively. Well done to all!

I also would like to publicly thank Mrs Fiona Meecham and Ms Chrissie Swain for attending Lauren’s meeting while I was with Amelia and Siobhan.

Last week we also had our first general meeting for Years 8 to 12 to take names for the 2015 Rostrum and ESU competitions.

I thank all the girls for their attendance and there will be a further meeting next week with more information given. A meeting for Year 7 will also take place then. Please keep your eyes open for meeting times on the daily notices!

Finally, we wish Maxie Sutton (8), Morgan O’Neill and Kaitlin Carey (9) and Taylor Whitewood and Tayla Jansen (11) all the best for the ESU Roly Sussex Short Story Competition.

Sports Department Swim for Fitness and Stroke Development Swim for Fitness Training runs on Wednesday and Friday morning at the Loreto pool from 6.30am to 8.00am. It is recommended that all water polo players try to attend one session for fitness.

Loreto Interschool Swim Squad Training has commenced. All squad members have received a booklet detailing the training program and competition commitments. The Swim Clinic will be held on Sunday 1 March from 8.00am to 2.00pm. All competitors need to meet Mrs Stevens and Ms Hatch at the Yeronga Pool at 8.00am. Swimmers need to bring $10.00 by Wednesday 25 February to the Sports Office.

Cross Country Training The Loreto Cross Country coaches, Andrew and Clare, are starting the cross country training program for the season starting 3 March 2015. Any interested runners who would like to train need to sign up at the Sports office. The times for training are as follows: Tuesday and Thursday from 3.30pm to 5.00pm Wednesday and Friday from 6.30am to 8.00am.

P&F School Dance Friday 13 March - Years 9 - 12 The first 2015 Loreto school dance is upon us! The dance will be held on Friday 13 March at 7.00pm. The theme for the evening is “Around the World”. The dance will feature a professional DJ, prizes and themed costumes. It is a lot of fun for both students and parents, and one we all aim to make enjoyable and safe. With that in mind, we require parents to register their preference and availability for the following jobs: Ticket sales:

Six parents needed for student entry and one to assist with the counting and clearance. 6.30pm 7.30pm.

Security:

Twelve parents needed for each shift. Crowd control while waiting for tickets and supervising the outside of the hall. The doors of the hall are open for ventilation. Parents are required to stop attendees leaving and others entering. There are two shifts: 6:30pm - 8:30pm and/or 8:30pm - 10:30pm. (Professional security guards will be employed for inside the hall).

Cloak room:

Six parents needed for each shift. Receiving bags for safe keeping during the dance and then distribution at end. 6:30pm - 8:30pm and/or 8:30pm - 10:30pm.

Canteen:

Three parents needed for each shift. Drinks sales. 6:30pm - 8:30pm and/or 8:30pm - 10:30pm.

Mt Carmel Parish - Data Projectionists Mt Carmel Parish is looking for some school age students to operate the data projector during mass. A roster would be organised and each student would take responsibility for this task once each month. Training is provided. An adult would sit with you for the first couple of times you were rostered. Year 7 Drama Club - Lost Shoes Somebody in Year 7 went home yesterday with Emily Dann’s size 6 Clarks black leather school shoes. We are currently holding an unclaimed pair of size 7.5 black leather school shoes. Please check your daughter’s shoes to ensure that she has the correct pair. All school shoes must be named. The school can do little to help find an unnamed pair of shoes.

International Women’s Day Fun Run - Sunday 8 March Once again Loreto College will be participating in the RACQ International Women’s Day Fun Run. We encourage as many staff, friends of staff, students and families to participate to make this a wonderful event.

This event is being held at South Bank on Sunday 8 March from 7.00am, with Mater chicks in pink the major beneficiary of the event, a program supporting women with breast cancer. This fun run/walk is a wonderful opportunity to bring our school community together, particularly in your last year!

While this event has a fundraising component to support research into breast cancer, it is voluntary and participation is the aim of the team entry by the College, as there are many formal fundraising opportunities in our College calendar. Should you wish to fund raise then that is your responsibility.

Pay for your registration.

The cost if you are running is $40 for adults and $30 for students. The cost if you are walking is $35 for adults and $25 for students. All registrations must be completed online by Thursday 5 March 2015.

The course is 5km, leaving Melbourne Street adjacent to the Cultural Forecourt at Southbank, going over the bridge, around the Botanical Gardens, back over the Goodwill Bridge and to the finish line at the Cultural Forecourt.

SPLC Invitational Swim Meet Friday 27 February 2015 (For all Swim Squad) 50m Pool, Lohe St Entrance (Bus stop use Harts Rd Entrance) Warm-up begins at 4.30pm Carnival to commence at 5.00pm Finish time 6.30pm (approx)

Suggested Program 200m Choice of Stroke – Open 50m Freestyle – all ages 50m Breaststroke – all ages 100m Choice of Stroke – Open 50m Butterfly – all ages 50m Backstroke – all ages Relays 13/14/15/16/Opens    

The meet will serve as a time trial. Additional heats will be run as required by schools for time trialling purposes.

Each school is responsible for timing and recording the performances of its own swimmers.

Lanes will be allocated for each school.

Marshalling and the start will occur at the grassed area of the pool. Timekeepers and recording will operate at the covered eastern end of the pool.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase at the pool.

This MEET TIME HAS CHANGED, it was originally 6 MARCH. A bus will take the girls from school to the meet. Girls will need to be collected from the venue at approximately 6.30pm.
