VtÜxxÜá axãá Griffith OP 1 - 6 Guarantee The Vice Chancellor recently announced a new Griffith OP 1 - 6 Guarantee for high achieving students. OP 1-6 or ATAR 90.00+ ranked students will have guaranteed entry into a very wide range of degrees at Griffith from Semester 1 2013. We hope this initiative will encourage more students to aim higher and allow them to secure their future earlier. Griffith will notify successful students of their secure place in December of each year. There are some exceptions to the scheme, largely where additional assessment is required- these are medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, midwifery, nutrition and Queensland Conservatorium degrees. German On Wednesday 9th May we celebrated German Day at Loreto College. During Assembly the Year 12 German students led us in prayer with a focus on the Story of Creation in German. The Year 9 German class then presented “Aschenputtel” (Cinderella). Danke schön to Herr Doktor Irmer and Frau Begley for narrating the story. This story was chosen to celebrate 200 years since the Grimm’s Fairy Tales were first published. At morning tea, the girls had the chance to try some Bretzels (large Pretzels) whilst at lunch, a sausage sizzle was held to add an authentic German feel to the day. Many thanks to the Multicultural Council for their organization of these activities. Thank you also to Mrs Ward and Miss Stewart for their hard work in preparing the presentations and prayers for German Day.

Nacel Australia – French Exchange Programs The following opportunity may be of particular interest to Year 10 and 11 French students who are not travelling to Bordeaux at the end of the year. Nacel Australia is an organisation that coordinates language, cultural and student exchange programs to a range of countries. Currently they are looking for volunteer host families and host schools for 1-4 French students arriving in Brisbane on 9 July and departing on 4 August. These students are girls aged 15-17. They would stay with their host family from 9 July to 29 July and would attend school at Loreto for two weeks. The French students accompany their host sisters to classes and participate where possible. The visiting French students also have an excursion to Moreton Island built into their stay and this is from Monday 30 July until Friday 3 August. Please see the flyer at the back of this newsletter for more details about Nacel Australia. Please note that this is an exchange program that Loreto facilitates but the matching of host families with visiting students is done by Nacel Australia. Nacel Australia also organises exchange programs to France and a range of other countries. Students can participate in programs from 4 weeks to 10 weeks over the Christmas holiday period. It is not necessary for students to have hosted an exchange student in order to travel overseas. Likewise, if you would like to host a visiting student, there is no obligation to travel overseas later. If your family would like more information about this or would be interested in hosting one of these visiting French students, please contact Patricia Clunes on 0410 617 825 or visit www.nacel.com.au Louise Tilly - Languages Coordinator

\g axãá Online Parent Portal We continue to roll out new features of our student administration software package and last week we activated the student portal which is called ‘Student Café’. This allows students to access all sorts of information including timetables, calendars, morning notices, as well as various useful links from at school and from home via the College website. Next semester linked to this student portal will be our new learning management system, called Edukate, which will allow students to access subject resources at anytime from any location. The next component of this administration package to roll out will be the online parent portal, which is called ‘Parent Lounge’. This portal will allow you to access a whole range of information including student details, student results, calendar information and attendance just to mention a few. This portal will also be the way in which Parent / Student / Teacher interviews will be booked for the meetings scheduled in early Semester Two. A letter will be mailed home later this week detailing all of the information about this parent portal including your User Name and Password. Please take the time to read this letter and visit the portal to view the features and services it provides.

Prize Donation Request – The Music Support Group needs quite a number of lucky door and raffle prizes each year to help raise money to fund the $8000.00 of tuition scholarships that it provides for our students. Anyone in the school community who would be able to donate a small item that would be suitable for one of these prizes would be making a valuable contribution that goes directly back to supporting our students. Donations can be anything from movie tickets and gift vouchers, to bottles of wine, to make-up/personal items that can be grouped into a basket and any donations are very appreciated. If you have something to donate, you can simply leave it at the school office with a note “for the MSG Raffles” or contact Karen Carr in the Music Office on 3394 9915. Rehearsals during Exam Block – As always, the Music Department will be cancelling, or excusing students from, quite a number of rehearsals during exam block so that they can focus on preparing for their assessment. However, with QCMF fast approaching, where possible we will still run rehearsals at their normal times. Could all music students and parents take careful note of the attached rehearsal schedule for the last few weeks of term so that there is no confusion regarding which rehearsals are affected? If a rehearsal IS on, then it is our expectation that students involved attend. Ben Langford - Director of Music

When: Saturday, 14th July, 2012 Venue: Grand Ballroom, Hilton Hotel, Elizabeth Street, City Time: 7.00 - 11.30pm The Year 12 students are looking forward to their Formal with eager anticipation. This will be a special occasion for the seniors and certainly a highlight of their final year at the College. A letter has already gone home about the evening and our expectations to ensure a happy, safe and memorable evening is had by all. The girls will be fully briefed about expectations of partners and behaviour and we ask that parents support us by escorting their daughters and partners to the venue at 7.00pm and then picking them up at 11.30pm. No one will be allowed to leave the venue before this time. We again remind you that the girls do not need additional forms of transport to get them to and from the venue. Whilst the College does not support the girls attending ‘post parties’, we are fully aware that these celebrations occur. The responsibility for the safety of the girls is paramount and we urge you to ensure planned and careful supervision so as to avoid any potential harm. It is timely to remind parents about the issue of alcohol consumption by underage drinkers and that episodes of binge drinking can seriously harm the health of your daughters. Please speak with your daughters to ensure their safety. We look forward to sharing this special occasion with your daughters and we hope that each girl has a most enjoyable evening that she will fondly remember for the years to come. Results Rd 1: Open A The Open A soccer girls kicked off their season with a 3 - 1 win against Stuartholme. The opening goal came in the first fifteen minutes with a great team effort with Zoe-Lee providing a great finish. The second goal from an excellent corner from Carla with Emma getting on the end of it and putting it in the back of the net. The girls’ third goal came from one of our courageous goal keepers who was playing as a striker. A great ball was put through to Taili who was put under pressure by the goal keeper but kept a cool head and slotted the third goal away. It was a fantastic opening match for the girls and we look forward to the rest of the season and hopefully a few more good wins. Jess McLean - Coach Open B The Open B soccer team had a great first game against All Hallows’ at Annerley. All girls played a fantastic sixty minutes of soccer, winning 2 - 1 to All Hallows’. Well done to all the girls. Players showed fantastic team spirit, and proved that with a little more training, we can achieve great results! Michael Kelly - Coach Junior A The Junior A soccer team played a spectacular game against Lourdes Hill on Wednesday afternoon. The whole team played together with pride and sportsmanship whilst scoring two goals against their opposition. Matilda was the first to score a great goal with spectacular passing between herself and Isabella. Mikky then made a run from halfway to shoot past the keeper and take us home with 2 goals to nil. The team played superbly with wonderful passing between each other and great defence against opposing strikers. This season has started off with a great first game and high hopes for the rest. Key players included: Isabella Lovenitti, Matilda Ingram, Brittany Ryan, Caitlin Mandrusiak and Mikeala Di Savia. Louise Norton - Coach
Hockey Results Rd 1: Open One We had an easy induction into this year’s season with us benefiting from the opposition forfeiting due to a lack of players. Mount Alvernia had only six players to work with due to illness and other commitments, so we convened a scratch match with some of our players volunteering to “cross over” to Mt Alvernia. A big thanks to Laura Felchow, Sandy Vo, Georgia McAulliffe and Sophie Atkinson for swapping sides this week to ensure we had a game on our hands. Despite the altered conditions, it was a great opportunity for our girls to nail down their preferred positions and get to know each other’s style of play. What was particularly impressive this round was our debutante players and how they got involved in every aspect of the game. Sandy Vo, in her first ever game of hockey, managed to force four free hits her way, while Laura Felchow traversed the whole field and got involved in some key passages of play. The more experienced Ellen Carey opened our account early with a convincing goal scored off a well-earned short corner. The rest of the match was played at a good pace with Tullee Allendorf scoring two goals from some great attacking runs into the top of the circle. Georgia Hillas showed how versatile she is by successfully transferring great stick skills normally used on artificial surfaces onto the more unpredictable Downey Park surface. After several great runs up the centre field she claimed a spectacular goal in

second half. Vanessa Arteaga and Coco (Daniela) Beylot took part in some impressive linking play with Laura Welch at centre half to help feed the forward line. Kalani del-Rae-Maher showed great courage and put her body on the line on a couple of occasions while defending against a Mount A attack. A special mention goes to Amber Schmidt who due to illness was restricted to the sideline. Despite this, she played the vital role of team psychologist, offering essential counsel and encouragement to our reserves as they prepared to run on. The afternoon ended with a 4-1 score-line and all players left the field with a great sense of achievement. Matt Lourigan - Open One Coach Open Two Congratulations to the Open 2 team for their win in the first game of the season against San Sisto College. The girls played with great enthusiasm in an evenly matched game. Strong defence from both teams keep the score at 0 - 0 for most of the game. An impressive charge late in the second half from Wade Bilton resulted in the winning goal. Special mention to Emma Misson & Lucy Power for their courage and strength as goalies. Well done girls! Ian Wright and Eliza Mooney - Open Two Coach / Trainer
BSGSA Grass Hockey Updates Even though the season had a shaky beginning with the collapse of the junior competition, both of our Loreto teams have shown they will be a force this year by winning their respective games this week. It is very pleasing to see the increased participation by newcomers and returnees to the sport and the good spirit which all Loreto Hockey players displayed on Wednesday.
Turf Hockey The Turf competition has had a setback this year with the primary sponsor withdrawing support. We have had an acknowledgement from the organizers that there is still going to be a competition but as yet no actual detail as to how this will run. All we can do at this stage is continue training, attract scratch matches and be prepared for the event details to come. Everyone will be informed as soon as possible once details are received. Results: Round 1 Junior A The girls displayed great teamwork and commitment for the first game despite the loss. I was pleased with the effort and enthusiasm the girls demonstrated throughout the game and their support for each other ensured they stayed close to the opposition for the majority of the game. Unfortunately a brief lapse in the fourth quarter allowed Mt Alvernia to get out of reach from the girls. Rebecca Smith demonstrated excellent defence work with numerous intercepts and pressure over the ball that allowed Jessica Galpin to convert these much needed turnovers into points. Overall for the first game of the season the girls were fantastic. Coach: Clare Gill JUNIOR B A great way to start off the season as the girls defeated Brigidine College 30-2. The girls played very well as a team. Everyone deserves player of the match, particularly for our "hands up defence" which was consistent the whole way down the court. Please remember to have nails cut for both games and training. It’s going to be a fun season! Coach: Josie Woolaston JUNIOR C What a great start to the netball season. The girls defeated St John Fisher 14 to 10. There were lots of enthusiasm from the whole team and particularly strong defence from Isabella Kubler and Ashley Parker. Coach: Mrs Gold INTERMEDIATE A The team won against Brigidine 15-9. All the girls played really well with Mia and Melissa outstanding in defence. A great start to the season! Coach: Courtney Milner INTERMEDIATE B1 10 B1 started the season with a strong win against Brigidine College, ending the game 16-8. Our centre court players took the lead early, intercepting the opposition’s passes and putting the ball back in our circle. Katie Mirabito was an unstoppable centre, and her defence meant many balls were turned over back to our players. Prue Hempel and Hannah Dalton showed great team work and scored many goals even with the sun in their eyes. Our defenders in the opposition circle stepped up to block many attempts at goal. Every girl played her hardest and this team will be one to watch this season. Manager: Claire Matheson INTERMEDIATE B2 The intermediate B's have had a really great start to the season, training hard and working really well as a team. This week marks the first of game of our competitive season and it began with a bang as we narrowly lost to Lourdes Hill. Although the final score was 22-14, the score did not reflect our team’s performance. Everyone played really well, showing a lot of determination and enthusiasm. I really look forward to seeing further skill and fitness development over the remainder of the season! Coach: Emma Macleod INTERMEDIATE C Round one of competition and the Intermediate C's are off to a great start winning 30-0 to Brigidine. The girls showed off some wonderful skills and team work and are looking forward to a greater challenge next week against St Rita's. Well done girls! Coach: Magadeline Ryan INTERMEDIATE D A fantastic game from the 9B's! With a 26-3 win over St Rita’s the girls started the season with a bang. Strong defensive pressure by all players across the court enabled Loreto to come away with a strong win. The attacking end teamed well together capitalizing on the many turnovers gained by the defensive players. An excellent effort by all girls! Coach: Briony Logan INTERMEDIATE E All girls played a fantastic first game against Mary MacKillop College. Defence was consistent down the court, with countless intercepts and taps in our favour throughout the game. Enthusiasm on the court paid off, with a successful win of 9 - 5. All the girls had fun and I look forward to coaching them for the season ahead. Coach: Tara Cullinan

OPEN A A convincing win for our first game of the season; Loreto defeating Brigidine College 30-18. The girls dominated early keeping their opposition off the scoreboard for the first quarter. Centre court players were dynamic in their speed down the court and provided well placed feeds to the circle. Strong defensive work in the midcourt by Ashleigh O’Connor and Alannah Jeffcoat provided an impressive number of turnovers. Consistent goal shooting by Samantha Firrell gave us a comfortable margin in the first half which all team members fought hard to maintain for the remainder of the game. I look forward to seeing the girls become even more formidable as they gain experience playing together. An exciting start! Coach: Meg Logan OPEN B The team played San Sisto College and we had a 16 all draw. All the girls played well for their first game. Brittany Holahan shot very well and Lauren Stacey was fantastic in defence. Our centre court was strong with Meg Roberts, Jessica Healy and Rebekah Edwards all playing well together. A strong start to what looks like a great season!! Coach: Karen Holahan OPEN C Mt Alvernia 23 d Loreto 16. It was a tale of two halves. We held our own in the first quarter but lacked focus in the second quarter. Our fightback in the second half resulted in our winning the third and fourth quarters. But the damage had been done in the second. True Loreto spirit was shown by every player, in particular Molly Edwards who was excellent in both attack and defence, as were Olivia Mastry, Emily Smallhorn and Maddy Blanchfield. Good shooting from Beth Carroll and Brigid Oliver. Outstanding effort in defence from Lauren Higgins. Wunderbar! Manager: Mrs Peita Ward

ECDE atà|ÉÇtÄ lxtÜ Éy extw|Çz At assembly, your daughter was posed the question “Why read?” Here are some of the reasons. Books like Parvana, I am Nujood, 10 and Divorced, My Story: Titanic allow girls to develop empathy by walking in someone else’s shoes. Some girls read for information. You should see the queues for the books on the group One Direction! And we have many other information books too. Books like I Left my Mobile at the Mall by the comedienne, Wendy Harmer simply make us laugh. Other books such as Life on the Refrigerator Door and Keep Your Hair On move us to tears. Some books spark imagination and take us to another world: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and other fantasy and science fiction novels. Basically reading is fun. Is your daughter having fun….with books, in the National Year of Reading? Come to the library!
